A Remarkable Story of Remarkable Man.......2003-08-22

The life of Ernest Holmes is not just a very impressive and encouraging one, but also a real story of man whose lifework was destined to change lives of possibly millions of people. We have yet to see what this man's remarkable contribution will accomplish in the future to come.

I don't usually like biographies, but this book is a great exception to this rule. It is written in a very beautiful way about man who discovered that there is divine power/force within everyone of us... he turned this knowledge into a religious science movement which is currently perhaps the most known division of New Thought movement.

The author of this book has a way of nailing your eyes to the book, and you cannot lay it down until you have finished. The author will walk you through the good and bad, joys and sorrows...and will show you how Ernest stood erect for the truth and did not waiver or give up even when met with resistance. So the book tells you a story of man who knew what needed to be done and then did it.

Ernest's sincere desire was to help his fellow human beings to lead a balanced life spiritually, socially, occupationally and financially. He wrote many great books which have changed lives of millions.

In my opinion, the best thing that this book accomplishes is that it will enlighten your understanding of what Religious Science is truly all about. If you have any uncertainities or feel like Religious Science is a shady movement, then reading this book will show you how much love and good things there are about the father of this organization.

The best biography I have ever read...written by a person who is Ernest's associate and a long-time friend.

Fascinating account of a man and a religious movement.......2002-02-04

Did you ever wonder how a religious thinker got from Point A (the youthful years) to Point B (adult years where he was now a religous pioneer and the soul that ignited the Religious Science movement)?
If you have, this book is for you. If you're not into Religious Science's change your mind/change your life philosophy this book will still offer some revelations. If you are into it or involved with it, it is a must-read/must-own.
Author Reginald Armor, who died in 1977, was a mere 12 years old when he met the older Ernest Holmes, who even as a young man in his 20s had embraced the philosophy for which he was to become famous. This book traces their lifelong friendship, Holmes' evolution, and the church's growth, from their first meeting (Holme's treatment helped cure Armor's warts) to Holmes' final years.
Don't expect a long, ponderous detailed book. This book is not that at all. It's a simple account of a friendship that lasted until Holmes' 1960 passing. In sections tracing the steps of how Holmes' institute evolved into a church it resembles at times more of a history book than a memoir. These sections are the least interesting.
But Armor also traces how Holmes' carefully considered and precisely articulated spiritual and metaphysical philsophy sparked a movement that would later have profound influences throughout the 20th century. Indeed, many classic and contemporary self-help books and motivational speakers are heavily influenced by his philosophy (the power of visualization; affirmative prayer; and "releasing" an affirmation and having complete faith in it after you make it).
Armor also reveals several fascinating facts: even as a small child Holmes would never stop constantly asking questions (an answer meant he would ask another question), which is how he developed his thought; Holmes started as a public speaker because he truly loved speaking and sharing his philosphy about how applying what he called Universal Law could manifest a person's best good; and Holmes resisted until the very last his associates' attempts to create an church. He prefered a person's one-ness to and with God and felt organized religions' middleman institutions were unncessary. Plus he felt there were "too many religions" already. He made it clear he had no intention of founding a new religion.
In the end, though, Holmes went along with the idea of a church (which today has some members who still maintain their previous religions even as they practice the all-inclusive Religious Science) to help spread his ideas...which he felt were really not HIS ideas, but ideas from a Higher Source.
The bottom line: this is a simply written book which answers some key questions about who Holmes was, what motivated him, and how the then-innovative thoughts that he voiced led to the creation of an actual church.
A MUST if you're interested in the lives of spiritual thinkers.

Good Resource.......2006-09-01

A good resource for a parent that has to deal with a serious illness, and is confused about how to talk to their children. It helps the parent to understand the fallout that occurs for the children in the family. I needed it for a specific research paper dealing with children accepting their parent's diagnosis of AIDS. It contained only one small section for this issue. This is a huge problem these days, and I think it required more space.

I don't knit - but my wife does. She has had this book on an endlessly renewed loan form the local library for over a year. I have searched every book shop -real and virtual in Australia - many listed it - none stocked it - Amazon had it.
It HAS to be an indespensible guide to knitters everywhere - grab it while it is in stock!!

Ultimate is correct.......2007-02-01

This is the best stitch dictionary I have found! It has both knitting and crochet stitches. It clearing lists skill level and drape of the finished fabric next to a color photo of a sample so that I can quickly skim through and find something to try. The pattern instructions are clear and easy to follow while your hands are busy with the needles/hook and yarn. I know I will use this resource for years to come.

The things I liked about this book:
1. descriptions of stitches: drape of stitch, skill required
2. color pictures
3. many patterns
4. relatively equal treatment of knitting and crochet:
knit: pages 11-180
crochet: pages 181-316
5. sorting by weight
knit: medium weight, heavy weight, lace, panel, ribs and edgings
crochet: medium weight, heavy weight, openwork, motifs, edgings

Things that I don't mind, but aren't perfect:
1. small pictures, contrast varies from good to moderate
2. no charts

Some say that this book is like the Harmony guides, but I haven't looked at them closely. As an intermediate knitter and crocheter, I find this book easy to use and completed my first project over the holiday, inserting the Vandyke lace panel into a scarf. I bought this book to add variety to the patterns I already have.

This book is excellent for people who know how to knit and crochet and don't want to be constantly buying patterns. There are tons of patters organized by yarn weight and use. The book gives info on how to knit and crochet however, it is weak in terms of pictures which most beginners need.

This is one of the best books I've read. It's cover-to-cover knit and crochet pattern stitches with clear instructions. There are easy and advanced patterns listed, and some unique methods can be learned. There are also many pages of clear instructions on techniques for both knitting and crocheting. I highly recommend this book.

This book is very helpful to get a home and life organized. I like the way it is separated into specific areas and the specific directions to get that area in order. The directions and suggestions are easy to understand and use. The second edition is larger and contains a section I really needed to use - that of organizing photographs.

Very good Reading.......2007-09-15

I really enjoyed reading this book and usually this type of book can be a little dull. It was very motivating and she didn't just tell you to throw all your stuff out. She gave good advice on how to organize the things you have and want to keep. She also had a way of not sounding judgemental of people just because they had a problem of keeping everything.

Organized - not neat.......2007-08-14

One of the most important points in Organizing from the Inside Out is that being organized is not the same thing as being neat. If you want your house to look neat, you can shove everything under the bed and in the closets. Being organized means knowing where everything is and having it conveniently located to where you need it. Julie Morgenstern divides the process of getting organized into a few important steps:

1. Sort. Before you start throwing things away, figure out what all ended up in that drawer or closet. Put it in piles and put labels on the piles. This will help you figure out how to make a home for everything and/or how to make sure it doesn't end up there again. If you just throw all the trash away, that closet will most likely collect trash again.
2. Purge. Now you can throw away all that junk.
3. Attack. This is the figure out where it's all going to go. Think where it will be most helpful and easiest to keep organized. If all your books end up by the sofa, don't put them away in the office upstairs. Put a basket or a bookshelf next to the sofa.
4. Containerize. Measure everything, figure out what kind of containers would work best and then go buy them. Not before! Put nice labels on everything so the whole family knows what goes where.
5. Equalize. Spend five minutes every day putting things back in their place.

She makes a good point that people that like to organize usually end up in one of two categories:

* Those that like to purge. (This would be me. Learned from my mom.)
* Those that like to containerize. I know lots of these - they like to buy containers and shelves and things. More gadgets to hold the junk says the purger.

Skip the chapter on technology. She is obviously not a heavy computer or gadget user.

First off, let me say I loved this book, got a lot of ideas from it, and use it constantly as a reference. She is a great writer, and really explored some new concepts. Do I think it could have gone a little more in-depth? Yes. What surprised me is that while she did touch on the subject of getting rid of excess clutter, she really didn't push. People will have a lot less to organize if they lose such an emotional attachment to their stuff. Maybe she didn't want to take the chance on offending some of the more hard-core pack rats, and didn't want to use "tough love". But I personally felt that she could have added some more about overcoming the emotional attachment people have to things they no longer need or use. Other than that, this is top-notch, with great websites at the end of the book to help get you organized.

Brilliant Read.......2007-07-04

Who would have thought that looking at a kindergarten class room you could organize your whole life?! This book is great. I have read a few organizational books that have left no impression on me, and then I read this one. It is great - it does not tell you to throw out 80% of what you own and then organize the remaining 20%, it actually tells you how to organize everything you own. Not only that it looks into the deeper issues of what's stopping you getting organized in the first place, which then helps ensure that you will stay organized after all the hard work. The book can be read from cover to cover or you can skip to whatever section you think you need to work on first.

Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we'll never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology," is worth its weight in DayTimers and PalmPilots. Whatever your organizing issues are, you're not a hopeless case, and you don't need special equipment--just a little understanding of the problem and a willingness to plan before diving in.
