Quite an adventurous tale.......2007-06-24
I try to read most of the submarine books that come along and in the case of this title, I'm glad I did. The author, Claude C. Conner, wrote it for his children,I bet he's surprised to find he has so many of them! Being aimed at those uninitiated to submarine lore, the book is quite easy to read and very easy to comprehend; certainly the glossary demistifies much of the goings-on of the diesel boats of bygone years.
The book is also jam-packed with thrilling stories of The Guardfish's patrols both when the author served on her and when he didn't! The book is easily read in one or two sittings as a result of the author's knack for telling true submarine adventure tales.
The title alludes to an unfortunate "friendly" fire occurence, the only one during World War II in which a US fleetboat sank another US Navy surface craft. Most of the last 4 or so chapters recount some of the slickest brass hat equivocating, obfuscating and ring-knockery to be beheld in naval literature, some things in life never change!
All in all, this is a terrific book, not only for it's portrayal of naval history and heroism but also for it's depiction of human nature. Pick up a copy, and when you're finished, pass it along. Or make your friends buy a copy at Amazon dot com!
Appeals to the inner pirate.......2006-11-08
This is an interesting book for one reason in particular. It is the only first person account of submarine warfare I know that was written by an enlisted sailor in the navy. It's well written a good story and shouldn't take long to finish.
This book centers more on the personal triumphs of the people on board the submarine and less on the strategy of submarines in the war. All in all, a great account of their war patrols.
As a radio nut I think it's particularly interesting that the author was a radio man in the service. I can't think of a book written by anyone in the service who played a role in radio service. As a result of mission he was in a key position to observe everything that was going with the ship and its place in history.

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in submarines. Since I made five submarine war patrols during WWII, and served in the U.S. Navy for twenty six years, it's possible I may be a bit biased. This is the best submarine book I've ever read that gives a realistic look at the day to day life of a submarine crew in action. The perspective is from the view of an enlisted man,who really tells it the way it was.

This book about the submarine USS Gaurdfish is an in depth look at look at the war patrols of a famous sub and is a great read. I highly recommend reading this book to veterans and people who are interested in military ships and events.

I found this book to be extremely engaging, interesting, and substantive on the morality of abortion. Dennehy, a philosopher, writes for the general educated reader here, and the result is a very useful and practical book for those interested in the moral issues surrounding abortion. Dennehy presents strong and very clear philosophical (not religious) arguments against abortion, in addition to many great insights on the tactics of pro-abortionists for obfuscating the moral issues. He also replies to typical objections to his arguments with insight and clarity. There is much more besides this, including accounts of his many years debating abortion, and fascinating stories of how people have reacted to his arguments. I would recommend the book highly for all those who want a down to earth, and very clear, discussion of the arguments against abortion.
Sound Advice for Debating Abortion.......2003-06-23
For Dennehy, "how to argue intelligently about abortion" means what can one realistically expect to accomplish before a live audience in the space of a lecture: give them the minimal number of ideas that are necessary and sufficient to show the immorality of abortion. So he wisely explains how to argue that the mere probability that the fetus is a human being means that abortion implies a willingness to kill innocent human beings. The temptation is to try for more than that, which in that context would be self-defeating. The author's decision to write the book as an autobiographical account of "war stories" - against enemies on both sides of the abortion debate - makes the book down-to-earth, practical and an enjoyable read, despite his substantial academic credentials. Who says philosophers have their heads in the clouds?
The Inside Story of the Fight for Life.......2003-06-21
This book is an adventure into what motivates, sustains, and illuminates the serious defender of innocent human lives, especially those tiny persons before birth.
Philosophical insight marks every page of Dr. Dennehy's story of the conflict over legal abortion in the United States. It amounts to a history of the defense of human dignity and personhood over the past four decades.
As someone with a background and experiences similar to Dennehy's over the same period of years, I can attest, from a mid-Westerner's perspective, to the validity and depth of his claims about the escapism and false rhetoric of the opponents of the right to life movement and about many other aspects of the struggle.
His treatment of the abortion issue is developed in accord with classical natural law theory and is not an appeal to any particular religious belief. The book remarkably sets a calm, deliberate tone for the sincere seeker of truth, who will have little to do with sophistic, slick, emotional appeals.
Anyone who is active in the pro-life/anti-abortion movement would find this book an absorbing and inspiring work of love and reason in the service of the truth. Those who are opposed to the anti-abortion position in the present debate will find, in Dennehy's dogged determination to clarify and illuminate the issues, grounds for increased respect for their opposition.
The presentation is clear and engages the reader in his endeavor of refining common sense in order to discover meanings for defending babies who are the most defenseless of our human community.
The title might bother pro-lifers. But the author, while he does not reject being called pro-life, likes to say in public that he is not pro-life, but anti-abortion. He calls the appellation short, clear, and emphatic. It gets attention and lets people know that he is dead set against the special evil of killing that abortion really is.
Anti-Abortionist at Large is virtually a manual for speakers and advocates for the pre-birth child and the post-birth bearers of severe handicaps. Professor Dennehy constantly refers to his experiences, both positive and negative, in speaking before large groups. He conceives his book as an autobiography, an anecdotal history, a debate manual, and as a personal testament, in which he hopes to give witness to the gadfly of Athens, Socrates, by being the gadfly of the San Francisco Bay area.
The work has been a long and lonely challenge, for the most part. And he speaks for many advocates when he says the silence from the Sunday pulpits has been "thunder in our ears."
The author is quite conversant with the work of some of the bigger theorists of the abortion movement, such as Judith Jarvis Thompson, Marianne Warren, and Michael Tooley. He chooses to dramatize his debate experiences with Dr. Marianne Warren. He also offers tips on how to relate to the usual speaker-types from Planned Parenthood, NARAL, ACLU, and other such organizations.
Many other aspects of pro-life, anti-abortion work are revealed. Dennehy became astute regarding the typical tactics of politicians as they dealt with the abortion issue and with pro-lifers. He gives examples of his efforts to write elected officials on the subject and compares it to fighting smog with a crowbar. Particular commentaries are included on the intransigence of legislators like Cranston and Edwards of California, and on the "demoralizing betrayal of Jesse Jackson." There are also bright spots, such as the courageous Presidential candidacy of pro-life advocate Ellen McCormack from New York.
Various highlights and "lowlights" from the abortion struggles of the 60's and 70's are mentioned. Quite notable was the "landmark" editorial in the California Journal of Medicine (1970). Now called the Journal of Western Medicine, the editor wrote about "A New Ethic for Medicine and Society," remarkably claiming that the Judeo-Christian ethic was decaying and needed replacement. And, as I recall, the article admitted quite frankly that everyone knows human life begins at conception and that it was necessary to use rhetorical subterfuge in order to let people gradually become accustomed to the new ethic.
He touches upon some of the critical legislative history of the year 1972, by which time the anti-abortion movement started to turn around the various legislatures. He mentions the overwhelming victories for the anti-abortion cause in the referenda that year held in North Dakota and Michigan. My recollection is that in 1972 not a single State fell for an abortion bill among the 33 States that entertained such legislation. Then the rug was pulled on the whole movement in January of 1973, when seven judges on the United States Supreme Court toppled the legal protection for pre-birth children throughout the nation.
In the jaws of the holocaust that was unleashed, Dr. Dennehy patiently and persistently has continued to expose the deceptive messages that the abortion culture gives young people. In fact, he says that in his 36 years of debating abortion, he does not recall more than two who were willing, in any serious way, to address the fundamental question: Is the unborn baby a human being?
The duplicity of the media is deftly dealt with, including observations such as how abortion proponents are being called "abortion rights" advocates in the same vein as one might refer to proponents of slavery as "slavery rights" advocates. He also duly notes the repressive behavior of the media in not showing photos and films of abortions, while indulging in many kinds of depiction of killing and mayhem in connection with warfare and street crime. And he cites various other ploys, conscious or unconscious, that serve to protect a "woman's right to choose" homicide for any one of her children at the peak of their vulnerability.
In deeply regretting the violence of a small minority of so-called "pro-lifers" against abortionists and abortion centers, the author calmly notes that "respectable, law abiding" abortionists deliberately kill millions of innocent human beings, usually for profit. An abortionist today might be called a "good citizen," but, the author says, that it is not the same as being regarded as a "good human being," as Aristotle once observed and as the Nuremberg Court noted in 1946.
In all of his speaking endeavors, Dennehy always tries to be sure that, after his presentation, the audience members never think the same way about abortion. He is determined to stay on message: Abortion is the direct killing of an innocent human being.
Slowly but surely, this courageous speaker and author says, the trend in this country is going anti-abortion. But every day, week, month, and year thousands of babies die in the womb of a careless culture. People who care will want to read this book. It lays out a remarkably thoughtful path to peace with our most intimate neighbors-a path determined to end their silent screams.

This is unquestionably one of the most enlightening, unusual, thought-provoking and original books that I have read in years. With so much of the public abortion debate in the hands of our so called media experts and academic opinion-makers, Professor Dennehy's honest and moving account of his 30 year defense of innocent, unborn babies forces all of us to question the assumptions and lies we have so easily embraced concerning one of the central issues of our time. And Dennehy minces no words when he says that "abortion is the bone in the throat of contemporary American society that slavery was in the 19th century." What happens in the following 200 pages is a fascinating, sometimes humorous, disturbing, but ultimately inspiring account of one courageous man's efforts to defend not only the innocent, but the values at the core of any decent culture: compassion and humanity. Dennehy has the intellect of a Socrates, the wit of a Jay Leno, and the overhand right of a Rocky Marciano, but he speaks to us over coffee at the kitchen table. Laugh out loud cute.......2007-01-25
When our daughter made me a first-time MOB this Christmas, she presented me with this book. While I enjoy good humor, only the James Harriot books (All Creatures Great and Small etc) had actually made me laugh out loud. Many passages in this book have had me laughing so hard I have literally cried. In addition, our execution of the Mother-Daughter Pre-Nup has saved me from unmitigated grief with my daughter about the dinner entres (among other things) at the venue she and her fiance have chosen which features nouvelle northern Italian cuisine. We're talking date sauce over pork chops and lemon zested brussel sprouts and leg of lamb with garbanzo beans here folks.
Amid a great deal of humor Leslie Milk dispenses pithy nuggets of great advice. This book would be a welcome volume especially for MOBs who have or need a sense of humor. MOGs would enjoy it too.

Wedding book for mom's of brides........2006-03-09
This book is the best! Leslie Milk is clever, funny and extremely informative. I not only learned more from this book than the more formal bridal book I purchased but had some good laughs too. She makes such sense and covers everything you need to know. Actually my daughter read it, my husband read it after hearing my many references to it, and I ended up ordering more copies to give as gifts. This is a must have book for mom's of brides and actually brides too.

I orginally bought this book for my mother (bride's mother) but it was just so cute and clever that I purchased it for the Groom's mother. For Brides: It imforms your mothers of their role without hurting their feelings. My mom read it in 2 days and she said she really connected with it and her role in my wedding. But in a nice, none confrontational way.

My favorite cookbook..........2007-07-20
I was introduced to this cookbook several years ago at a Seder. In the years since, I have collected a shelf full of cookbooks with a few favorite recipes in each book. "Spice and Spirit," however, never fails to provide an easy, excellent meal. For awhile the book seemed to be out of print. I decided to check Amazon one more time to find one for my summer home. I was delighted to find it available again. You do not need to keep Kosher to love this cookbook!
Good, but could have photos.......2007-01-04
This book is very useful and it contains a wealth of information on not just the recipies but also the Mitzvot that apply to the recipies, like separating Challah. However, I give it a point off because it doesn't have any photographs. I know, it's silly, but I like to have photographs of the food so that I can try and see if what I make looks anything like the photos. All in all, a good book though.

I love cookbooks, to read and look through. This one is the best. It has all the basic recipes and loads of information abouth jewish life and general cooking. When I am looking for a good basic recipe I know it will be here. I have given this as a shower gift many times. There are many cookbooks out there with more updated recipes and pictures (this book has no pictures) but when I need something to come out right, not be too difficult, and taste good I go for this book. The brownie and Basic (fruit)filled cakes I have made hundreds of times and they keep asking for them.

This book is awesome! Although indispensable for those who keep kosher, it is wonderful for anyone with tastebuds. (I'm a Christian.) The recipes are much-loved, tried-and-true favorites, which are very clearly written to virtually ensure success (e.g., even telling what size saucepan to use -- which you'll appreciate if you ever had to switch to a larger pan halfway through the recipe, thereby leaving two to scrub). Everything in it is wonderful; these are the recipes folks swear by, so you can try them with complete confidence. Awesome book! It sounds expensive only until you see it.

My five-year old adores this book. It has great illustrations and an engaging story line about a monster hiding in the cave that turned out to be a tiny caterpillar. It is hillarious and involves child attention. After the first reading my son knows who is hiding in the cave and tries to reasure all the scared animals every time we read it. This book is a joy to read for both a parent and a child and has a great message that what we fear often turns out to be small issue.
Age Appropriate Attention Holder.......2000-05-13
This book holds the attention of its intended audience beyond belief. The repetitious phrase, spoken by the would be monster, enables young readers to stay involved as they anticipate each animals incounter. Older readers can't wait to find out the monster's true identity. Best of all the illustrations don't give the monster's identity away until the appropriate time. All during the story it is evident the children's imaginations are whirling wildly. A must have for any teacher or reading volunter.

Best Book for Beginning Tailoring.......2006-08-08
Like the other reviewers, I borrowed this book from the library, and it was so helpful, I decided I had to buy it.
I'm an advanced beginner sewing my first tailored jacket. I followed the instructions for sewing set in sleeves (hair canvas bias strips, sleeve headers, shoulder pads), and the sleeves and shoulders turned out looking almost as good as the ones on a $500 jacket. It was my first attempt, and I was amazed.
I've seen other books on tailoring, and this one is superior in every way. True, the book doesn't cover collars, lapels or welt pockets, but what is covered is done thoroughly and professionally. And as the author points out it's best not to attempt too many difficult procedures on your first jacket.
In short, if you're eager to make a simple but professionally tailored jacket, Cecila Podolak's book is absolutely must reading.

It is a very helpful, nicely written book with beautiful photographs. After borrowing it from the library, I would like to purchase it for a reference. I am at an intermediate sewing level.
Not suitable for experienced, but great for the beginner........1998-07-14
This book covers everything you need to know to make a very basic, collarless jacket. Topics discussed include silhouettes, accurate measuring, fabric and interfacing choices, fitting, seam finishes, and step-by-step instuctions on assembling the jacket. However, the book does not cover welt and bound pockets (only patch pockets are included), bound buttonholes, collars and lapels- especially the notched collar. Tailoring and shaping are also excluded. (For a good overview of all of these techniques and some other goodies, check out Claire Shaeffer's "Couture Sewing Techniques; Taunton Press, 1993) The book is perfectly suited for those who may be wary of undertaking a jacket. The instructions are clear and there are many photographs. There is even a section that breaks down the sewing steps for a weekend jacket project, which is encouraging.

I was disappointed in this book. Given the editorial reviews and other reader reviews, I thought it might be a humorous look at sex and the lack of sex in the post-baby relationship as well as ways to rekindle the romance. What I read was much different. There was information on how the sex life changes (hence the 1 star), but I was turned off by a lot of the recommendations. For example, women who are suffering from post-baby negative body image probably wouldn't find the tip to rent a pornographic movie or let her husband read pornographic magazines helpful. Nothing like comparing that body to the idylic ones in the magazine pages...Also there were sections called "hide your smut" and instructions on how to handle when your children find your "treasure chest" of adult materials. Not exactly what I had in mind.
Fun to read and practical, too.......2005-04-27
This book is written in a fun and highly readable style (as opposed to that weird bedroom talk style that so many sex books use). Sexy Mamas gives you practical advice that you can apply to your life while you're busy raising kids, like finding time/energy for sex, figuring out why your libido may be so low right now, and so on. I also recommend Lou Paget's Hot Mamas, which specifically focuses on sexuality during pregnancy.
Much-Needed Support, Inspiration, and Sexual Self-Esteem .......2004-08-24
I have been searching for ways to rekindle my sex life with my husband in between work, family life, etc.. This book, by the authors of the Good Vibrations Guide to Sex (which I also recommend), is excellent. It deals with very real issues (body image, going from mother to sexual goddess) and also has creative, funny, sexy ideas to jumpstart your sex drive. It's for real moms who want to discover the sexy mamas within!
What Every Mom Needs.......2004-04-27
So many of my family and friends who have children are also having problems with their husbands...the husbands feel left out. This book has great suggestions for keeping intimacy on track, whether with just a simple back rub or a night for just the two of you, and what to do when you just don't feel like it.
I've recommended it to everyone I know who has kids, and highly recommend it here!
