3 out of 5 stars A Brief First-Person Account of War in Russia.......2002-01-17

3 stars - The book is brief in content and lacks the detail that Forgotten Soldiers or Soldat present in their accounts of German life in the front lines of WWII. Nevertheless, it does present some interesting vignettes of battle and some description of tactical actions that the anti-tank teams used to defeat the formidable Soviet T-34 and KV tanks.

These descriptions were the best part of the book. The rest is more of a personal retrospective that adds little to our understanding of the German soldiers' perspective or predicament. The personal experiences off the battlefield seem almost to be filler material.

I recommend the book in that it is short and easy to read, and the tactical descriptions of anti-tank warfare are helpful (if you are into that sort of thing). However, don't expect too much - if you have read and enjoyed Forgotten Soldiers, then this will disappoint you in its lack of detail. Borrow the book if possible (if it was a movie, I'd reccomend waiting to see it on video or even TBS vs. paying full admission at the theater).

2 out of 5 stars This book is more of a soldiers personal life off the field.......2000-10-12

I found this book to be more of a chronicle of this soldiers life off the battlefield than what it meant to be a soldier in the field. The last chapter is devoted to his stint as a prisoner of war and how relatively easy it was to work the system. There were a few short accounts of his action on the front but not alot of detail. Wish it had more with only one descriptive engagement I can recall about action against soviet tanks and the tactics the gunners used to defeat greater numbers. Not for the serious historian.

great book full of detailed stories on every page. a must read for all ww2 historians and reenactors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, a different perspective on WWII.......1998-12-30

It made me appreciate the fact that not only GI's had it tough but so did our enemy. I found the book interesting, enlightening and was unable to put it down until I was done.

    Book Description

The correspondence between Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, which appears here for the first time in its entirety in English translation, must rank among the most significant to have come down to us from that notable age of barbarism, the twentieth century. Benjamin and Adorno formed a uniquely powerful pair. Benjamin, riddle-like in his personality and given to tactical evasion, and Adorno, full of his own importance, alternately support and compete with each other throughout the correspondence, until its imminent tragic end becomes apparent to both writers. Each had met his match, and happily, in the other. This book is the story of an elective affinity. Adorno was the only person who managed to sustain an intimate intellectual relationship with Benjamin for nearly twenty years. No one else, not even Gershom Scholem, coaxed so much out of Benjamin.

The more than one hundred letters in this book will allow readers to trace the developing character of Benjamin's and Adorno's attitudes toward each other and toward their many friends. When this book appeared in German, it caused a sensation because it includes passages previously excised from other German editions of the letters--passages in which the two friends celebrate their own intimacy with frank remarks about other people. Ideas presented elliptically in the theoretical writings are set forth here with much greater clarity. Not least, the letters provide material crucial for understanding the genesis of Benjamin's Arcades Project.

Can it really be that improper breathing is the root of weight problems? If you are sick of dieting, you'll be thrilled to read that "Diets are the enemy. They make you paranoid, insane, and fat. They are the main obstacle between you and your ideal weight." For Pam Grout, the key to weight loss is breath! In order to increase her energy level, Grout began a routine of daily breathing exercises using self-help audiotapes. Within three weeks, not only was her energy restored tenfold, but she also lost 10 pounds.

Written with self-deprecating humor and a clear, up-beat style, Jumpstart Your Metabolism takes the reader on a journey through many breathing-related issues, all designed to enhance breath awareness and restore healthy breathing. Her text elaborates on the key fact that by breathing deeply and increasing oxygen intake, the body burns hydrogen--the key culprit in storing excess fat--faster and more efficiently. Grout's daily maintenance program includes three core breathing exercises ("Baywatch Bikini Breaths," "Kung Fu Breaths," and "Walk Around the Block with Your Mouth Full of Water"). Also included are a bibliography on books about breath and breathing, a short quiz to ascertain the degree of your breathing problem, a chapter on the mechanics of breathing, and information-stocked sidebars that serve as enthusiastic breathing coaches.

        Book Description

If you've tried every conceivable combination of diet and exercise and still can't shed those extra pounds, then perhaps you haven't discovered the hidden key to weight loss -- proper breathing. By increasing the amount of oxygen you take in, you can help your body do a more efficient job of releasing hydrogen, the chief culprit in the storage of excess fat. And you'll be amazed at the benefits of learning to breathe the right way:

Breathing coach Pam Grout will show you how with thirteen "energy cocktails," simple but powerful breathing exercises that you can incorporate into your daily routine, whether you're at your desk, in your car, standing in line, watching TV -- nearly anywhere, anytime.

Easy to learn and fun to do, the program in Jumpstart Your Metabolism will help you jumpstart the rest of your life!

        5 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!.......2007-08-25

I bought this book & I was very sketical. I have tried everything under the sun to increase my metabolism, to lose weight & to improve my breathing when I exercise. I could not walk pass 20 minutes without being out of breath. After I ordered the book & trying the techniques every day, in just 1 week, I could walk for 2 HOURS AND I WAS NOT OUT OF BREATH! Now I can JOG for 30 to 45 minutes, thanks to these breathing techniques, and I am 43 YEARS OLD! If I can do it, anyone can! I used to try aerobic exercises & I was out of breath every time. Not anymore! Now I don't mind JOGGING on my treadmill or walking/jogging outside because now I'm no longer out of breath! I'M IN BETTER SHAPE NOW AT 43 YRS. OLD THAN I WAS AT 20 YRS OLD

1 out of 5 stars Breathing to Stimulate Metabolism.......2007-07-23

The author has rehashed the popular breathing techniques from taoism, Yoga, rebirthing and given these techniques fancy names like 'Baywatch Bikini Breath' and so on. The author also has presented the yogic breathing techniques as taught by selp help gurus like Anthony Robbins. There is clear lack of evidence to show that these techniques can make you loose weight, either from research studies or from the author's own experience. There is lot of sales jargon and reminds one of the teleshopping products selling goods to loose weight.
The book does not talk of precautions to be kept in mind while doing the breathing techniques and the techniques are presented as a plain 'practise it and you will see amazing results'. For example Breathing techniques involving holding the breath can be harmful if practised immediately after eating food, but the author recommeds such practices. Those who seriously want to study books on self help on breathing and weight loss can do well to look for more authoritative texts by authors who have a good experience in practising and teaching these techniques. This book lacks experience and authority and can be positevely harmful.

1 out of 5 stars I gained weight while breathing.......2007-06-21

While following the author's instuctions, that is breathing in and out, I gained weight. Perhaps it was all the chocolate cake, cookies and ice cream that I ate. But gee I thought that if I was breathing like Pam said, I would lose weight. Oh well.

        5 out of 5 stars Breathe.......2007-01-09

What a wonderful concept. My skin looks better, my hair is growing (a very hard feat), my nails are stronger and longer. I've been told I have a sparkle in my eyes. I have more energy. Yahoo, thank you Pam Grout.

3 out of 5 stars A Weight-Loss Miracle? Maybe Not. But it does help with stress........2006-02-25

While not necessarily providing us with a miracle solution to weight loss, Pam Grout has given us some good advice. Breathing more deeply does help relieve stress. I feel this book is written for working people who have jobs that they can come home from and relax during the evenings by doing these breathing excercises. I'm a college student, so my work never ends and I don't have time to do more than the basic excercise perhaps once or twice a day if I even remember to do it. So I'm not exactly following the program very well, which might explain why I'm not really losing weight. My weight constantly fluctuates anyway. My body seems to be changing, but I'm not sure how. Fat in my lower abdominal area has not melted away. I'm not sure how this book would work for someone who had time to follow the excercises "by the book." I'm playing it by ear, not very dedicated, so I'm not sure if it would work for you or not. I guess it depends how overweight you are. I'm at a "normal" weight, and although I am not satisfied with the way my body looks at present, I would probably look emaciated if I lost twenty pounds. So I really don't know.

Wolfgang Puck's enthusiasm for good food could light up several small cities, and you'll find the proof on the pages of Live, Love, Eat! The Best of Wolfgang Puck. In 150 of his favorite recipes Wolfgang Puck demonstrates why and how flavorful food and fun can't be separated from each other--certainly not in his kitchen.

Consider the ubiquitous guacamole recipe. Puck calls his version California Guacamole. His ingredients are few, the flavors marshaling around roasted whole garlic, which adds to the whole an underlying sweet and mellow deliciousness. It's an act of elevation and restoration for one of the grand treats of the Southwest. Puck is a master of the respectful tweaking of familiar recipes and ingredients in favor of rejuvenation and flavor. The lowly chicken comes to mind. Chicken pot pie becomes Chicken Pot Pie Soup, Puck replacing the traditional crust with delicate dumplings. With Spicy Chicken Pizza (the chicken is marinated in lime juice, olive oil, garlic, cilantro, and minced jalapeño chilies) Puck takes this Neapolitan standard on a side trip to Mexico. Viener Backhendl, Austrian fried chicken, meets Asia by way of panko, Japanese-style bread crumbs. And so on.

Live, Love, Eat! has chapters devoted to appetizers, soups, salads, pizza and pasta, seafood, poultry, meat, accompaniments, and desserts. This is a richly illustrated book showing what results look like and how they get there. A final chapter, "Basics," is worth the price of admission. --Schuyler Ingle

        Book Description

This book is great! Wolfgang Puck is a great chef, and this book demonstrates it. The recipies are simple enough for a home cook to achieve good results, and are UNBELIEVABLY tasty. I highly reccomend this book if you are in the market, and are looking for quality. My wife and I especially enjoy the focacia and french onion soup recipes

5 out of 5 stars Wolfgang Delivers More Than I Expect. Sound Cooking.......2004-01-23

On the face of it, Wolfgang is unquestionably one of the best-known names in the world of culinary celebrities. To the great general public, he is probably the only name and face to outshine Emeril Legasse. But, the celebrity of both men seems to be based more on media exposure than on sound culinary achievements. While chefs such as Thomas Keller, Charlie Trotter, Daniel Boulud, and Tom Colicchio are less well known, their reputation with foodies is soundly based on culinary achievement, even if only known through their writings and reputation through media reviews. Puck's reputation to the world at large is based primarily on his position as caterer to the Academy Awards and other high visibility Hollywood events. He has a fairly large network of successful restaurants, including some middle end chain style establishments. I have always had the suspicion that he stole some thunder from Chez Panisse in the popularization of `California Cuisine', especially since Jeremiah Tower, the self-proclaimed inventor of this movement looks down his nose at Puck in his book `California Bites'. Similarly, Tower buddy Jim Villas, not known for having any California stripes, thinks little of LA's Puck while praising New Orleans' Lagasse. Lastly, Wolfgang has gone the budget route in lending his name to a low end line of cookware, competing with Martha Stewart's everyday ware rather than with Emeril's high-end All-Clad lines.

So does Wolfgang have real chops in the kitchen?

The evidence of this book is that his written cuisine is at least as good as Emeril's, his teaching approaches the quality of Jacques Pepin, and his creativity with the fusion of Latin American and Oriental cuisines with European concepts appear no less tasty than those of Norm Van Aken. The only thing the book lacks is that little twist most celebrity chefs give their books nowadays. The twist here is simply that it is from Wolfgang Puck.

The good things about this book are:

        1. Listing of all recipe names in the Table of Contents. This feature automatically makes a good cookbook more valuable, especially a mid-sized celebrity chef book like this. This fits the best use of the book as a resource for finding dishes for entertaining to fit a particular theme or taste.

        2. The emphasis on the sensory queues to the progress of cooking rather than on blind timings. All good chefs repeat this principle, but Wolfgang puts it front and center. This is a central skill of the professional chef whose work would be simply impossible if she worked by time with half a dozen dishes fired at a saute station at the height of service. It is also one of those professional tricks which should be learned by the home cook. The problem of the amateur is that while the recipe may have been written using a gas range and a zinc clad copper saute pan, the cook at home is probably using an electric range with a Teflon coated aluminum pan. And that is just one of the variables.

        3. Puck's chapter on basics is first rate, including very useful pictures at all the right places. It covers all the usual techniques for artichoke surgery, but it also includes recipes for court bouillon, puff pastry, and fish stock. I am of two minds with material like this. There are books which include a few pages of worthwhile material and try to give the impression that this is all you need to know, when people such as Jaques Pepin and James Peterson have written whole books on this subject and have not exhausted the subject. So wouldn't the author have been better off devoting this space to more recipes? On balance, I think Wolfgang did us a service and his material here makes me want to seek out his earlier books to find more of the same material.

        4. Wolfgang's recipes are a pretty fair mix of the traditional, such as the oft repeated Pasta Puttanesca and the chicken pot pie, to the trademark neuvo Pizza with smoked salmon and caviar.

On the negative size, Wolfgang's English writing seems to have the same Austrian accent as his speech. I'm really surprised that a publishing house such as Random House couldn't supply a copy editor to smooth out some of the more mangled wordings. Also, the subtitle of this volume is `The Best of Wolfgang Puck', but it doesn't make clear whether that means the best material from his earlier books, the best recipes from his restaurants, or the best material from his TV shows. This is a small matter, but it would have added value to the material.

As someone, like Wolfgang, of Austrian background, I am often disappointed that the second most prominent Austrian-American (after Arnold Schwarzenneger) who also happens to be a famous chef does not do a book of Austrian food. But, this book is no slouch. I would recommend it to anyone who has few cookbooks and is looking for an entertaining menu resource or simply for a wider variety of recipes. It is just slightly pricy at list price for 125 recipes, so look for it at a discount. For foodies, this book gives good value in honing one's pantry ingredients and prep skills.

As other reviewers have noted, these are not quick or easy recipes, but they are worthy of anyone with the time and interest in improving their cooking skills.

2 out of 5 stars You would have to LOVE the work nuveaux cuisine requires.......2003-07-21

to be able to enjoy this cookbook, because,

ONE, All the recepies are much more complicated versions of classic dishes that I have prepared in the past .... ie. I tried to fry the spaetzle dish to a golden brown ... good luck ...

TWO, Some of the recepies just don't even cut it as far as taste is concerned...... I have for years made Salmon tartare from an old Russian recepie so I was pleased to try the Tuna tartare in this book ... but .. even sticking to the ingredients ... there was a lot left over after the party ....

I think this book and the recepies would be great in a kitchen where you have more than 1 cook preparing the meal ..... sorry ,,,,,...

3 out of 5 stars Not bad overall but too elaborate for household kitchen.......2003-06-17

In this cookbook, Wolfgang Puck brings together all his favorite recipes and dishes from his famous restaurant. The cookbook is divided into different sections such as Appetizers, Soups, Pasta etc. The sections helped me find what I was interested in cooking that day, without having to do too much searching.

I thought that this cookbook was very nicely laid out and the design was beautiful and tasteful. Some of the recipes were also interesting and made a nice presentation when cooking for friends.

Now that I¡¦ve told you some of the good things about this book, here was one thing that I didn¡¦t like about this cookbook: I think the recipes lean towards the elaborate side of cooking things. Most of the meat dishes take more than 30 minutes to cook without the preparation time and require extra steps that I normally would not take for everyday cooking just for myself. Most of the time while I was cooking I felt that there would have to be an easier way to do some of the steps. It would be best not to follow the instructions blindly and do a little modification when cooking with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Ways to Cook at Home Like a Great Chef.......2003-05-04

I eat at Wolfgang Puck's Cafe in Evanston a lot, and have been to the Spago in Chicago for a special occasion. I love the food at both places. But I never thought I could cook Wolfgang's great food at home until I picked up this book and saw how simple he makes it. His instructions are really easy, and he includes step-by-step photos to show you exactly how. And the finished food pictures look mouthwatering and aren't fussed up like lots of cookbooks. I've made several of his chicken dishes, all delicious, and some incredible soups. My family went crazy over the bacon-wrapped meatloaf and his garlic mashed potatoes. The cheesecakes are the best ever. And his chocolate cupcakes with the warm melting centers are [super].

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2007-07-26

This book has so many projects in it that some are bound to interest you. The problem with books that feature, say 25 projects, is that if you find 10% of them interesting you get 2-3 projects out of the book. This has 150 projects. If you find 10% of them interesting then you walk away with clear instructions and pretty detailed plans for 15 projects. This book is well written and includes sections on finishing and material selection. I own many "project" books. This book outshines them all by a wide margin. Joinery is pretty basic and the projects run from beginner to intermediate, with most of them being the former. One point that I feel compelled to mention, however, is that most projects in this book require a machine (or hand tool) that will cut curves. Just buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great source of simple projects that make great gifts.......2007-04-30

I just got started in serious woodworking, and was looking for a good book to get me started with small projects to cut my teeth on. This was it. I've already completed a couple of the items and have more on my to-do list. The drawings are excellent, the instructions are, for the most part, helpful and accurate, and the materials lists are simple and low cost. The bulk of my Christmas gifts this year are going to come from making projects found in this book.

If you or someone you know is just getting started, this is the book to give them for a bunch of great project ideas that will build skills without incurring a bunch of costs.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......2005-11-26

I have a LOT of books and magazines full of plans for all sorts of things, but this one really stands out. So many quick easy projects you run across out there are for things that are outdated or are just plain dumb. This book is different - - the plans are for things that are actually useful and good-looking, things you'll want to make, and be proud of. As soon as I got the book I proceeded to make a bunch of the photo stands as Christmas gifts. There are some really simple items that can be made with a minimum of tools, and others that will be of interest to those with a shop full of power tools. These projects are especially great for those times when you don't want to spend several weeks building something. They're just fun projects that only require a day or two to complete, with a minimum amount of wood and expense. I highly recommend this book!

Just like children, parents go through stages. It really helps to see this part of our adult development in perspective. This book will help you to find where you are in the growth process of parenthood. It includes insight into how this process is the same and different when a child has a disability. This is valuanble for all parents and even more precious for parents who feel isolated when dealing with their child's developmental challenges.

                    Book Description

Dr. Eskenazi, a nationally recognized expert on breast reconstruction after cancer, began her medical career believing that she would become a psychiatrist. Her interest in psychology combined with a lifelong study of art, mythology, and anthropology has given her an unusual window into the interior landscape of her patients. What she has found is that the desire for external transformation through surgery is connected to internal transformation, most particularly at key moments of transition in a woman's life. Although some eight million women a year have some sort of procedure done, cosmetic surgery is still identified with excessive vanity, narcissism, lack of authenticity, and psychological weakness with the path of least resistance being to deny having had it. By framing cosmetic surgery in a more deeply spiritual and psychological way, Eskenazi takes on this culture of shame and refutes the idea that cosmetic surgery and internal change are antithetical. Whether women decide to have cosmetic surgery or not, this book will provide them with a different vision and a context for understanding their decision.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone curious about the relationship between plastic surgery and society.......2007-08-28

When I had my plastic surgery, I knew I just wanted to look better. Therefore I was quite surprised by all the changes in my life that occurred after the surgery. This book answered many of my questions about my confusing and exciting experiences by putting plastic surgery in the larger context of personal transformation and ritual within a community. My hat is off to Dr. Eskenazi for framing the issue of plastic surgery as larger than the simple quest for beauty. Using her firsthand experience as a plastic surgeon, she eloquently makes the point--more is going on here, there is substance beneath the surface. As growing numbers of people go under the knife and afterwards try to make sense of their experience, books like this will be sorely needed.

                    5 out of 5 stars A radical re-visioning.......2007-08-22

More Than Skin Deep is a 'radical re-visioning' of a topic that conventionally represents a self-betrayal of women. Here is a bold and startlingly new idea: plastic surgery as a chosen rite of passage, in which the woman making the choice is willing to undergo an ordeal for the purposes of sself-transformation. It has taken me by surprise and made me question many of my own attitudes. Dr. Eskenazi's views are cogently argued, compassionately presented, and quite tender in their understanding of a woman's life."

Readers seeking something out of the ordinary need look no further than Margaret Johnson-Hodge's interracial romance, The Real Deal. Personnel manager Samone Lewis is still reeling from the break-up of a long-term relationship with Max Scutter--the love of her life. When she interviews Jon Everette, a typical California boy, she has no idea that their alliance will soon progress beyond simple co-worker status. Samone fights even meeting Jon for lunch--after all, what could they possibly have in common? But Jon persists and Samone is soon won over by his kindness, charm, and quick wit.

The road to love is rarely smooth, and Jon and Samone's journey is no exception--it's probably even a bit bumpier than most. As much as she enjoys Jon's company she's reluctant to give her heart to him, fearing further emotional involvement and her family's reaction to her dating a white man. But when Jon mentions he is seeing someone else Samone realizes how much she really wants him in her life no matter what anyone else thinks. Sexy, funny, and frank, The Real Deal explores not only the intricacies of an interracial relationship but also details the struggle of a sensitive, vulnerable woman desperately seeking love. All women, regardless of color, will identify with Samone's struggle to recover from her difficult breakup with Max and her reluctance to give her heart yet again. Johnson-Hodge has written a profound first novel, creating characters that ring with authenticity and interest. This is a very literate, compelling read and highly recommended. --Maudeen Wachsmith

                    Book Description

One man was everything that she wanted. And he was black. To Samone Lewis, the only problem with her lover Max was his fear of marriage. He was dark as tree bark after a heavy rain, handsome, hard-working....but would rather say good-bye than "I do." At thirty-plus, suddenly still single and a Harlem sista with attitude, Samone was on the rebound.Another was everything she needed. But he was white. Then Jon Everette, fresh from California, walked into Samone's office at a New York TV network. From day one, Jon was funny, caring and crazy about her, even though Samone still wanted Max, no ifs, ands or buts. Max understood blackness-the pride and anger, dreams and pain. Samone didn't date white boys. She sure didn't fall in love with them. If she did, she might have to fight the world, her family, and most of all, herself....In the tradition of The Color of Love, the fresh, funny voice of Margaret Johnson-Hodge tells a completely contemporary story, rich with wisecracks and wisdom about interracial relationships and about the crisis every woman knows, falling in love....

                    5 out of 5 stars REALLY real.......2007-07-31

Just finished this book and at first it dragged and I hated it, but once Jonathan and Samone met each other I could not put it doen, Samone is an independent woman who is in love with a 'tall drink of water' named Max, but he is not ready for a commitment. After a life changing act, Samone and Max relutantly agree that they are not the ones for each other. Samone who is on the rebound meets Jonathan and they start a causal friendsip that turns into something more. THis syory is beautifully written and told. I enjoyed the intimacy with Samone and Jonathan, but the hearbrokenness of Max and Samone tie the two stories together.

A/A and interracial relationship. Some language and erotic situations.

                    1 out of 5 stars Pitiful.......2006-06-03

This was among the least romantic books I have ever read. The heroine - Samone never really told the hero, Jon that she loved him. Samone treated Jon as someone to spend time with until a black man comes along. It is just as well there was no mention of marriage, because one got the sense that this relationship will not last. There was no real love or passion. If like me you like your love scenes to be passionate if not steamy, this book is a complete let down - the love scenes are treated as an afterthought. For example, this is a bulid up to a love scene, " Jon turned off the lights and turned up the music." The next paragraph begins with "Morning. Samone woke in a panic." If I could have given less than one star I would. Do not waste your money!

                    2 out of 5 stars convoluted.......2005-09-27

If you jast have to read something, you won't feel like you've lost any brain cells on this book. If you have something else to read, read it. Most of the the negative comments on the book are dead on. samone is selfish, Max is selfish, Jon is a sucker.

When was this story set? I figured because it was published in 1998, it was set then or at least around the mid to late 90's. If that's the case, a lot of things don't add up. Reminiscing about Samone's youth didn't made her appear older than what she should have been.

I, also, found it unbelievable that she would be with a white man. The idea that she wanted Jon the take responsibility for Yusef Hawkins death and racism was assinine. I believe most men, black or white, would have walked away from her due her all-around bad attitude and her hot and cold mood swings.

Without giving away too much of the story, I would say it's not worth buying. New or used.

2 out of 5 stars The Real Deal is Real Rushed..........2005-09-16

"The Real Deal" is(a)n IR novel about an black HR Director stuggling to trying to come to grips with the fact that she is black, female, and successful and that this may all be due to the fact that she filled two quotas and not one, that she is a "token."

The book starts of well and the antagonist, Samone Lewis, finds herself in the same situation many successful women do...late twenties/earlier thirties, dumped and suddenly single. The chemistry that the author bulids between the IR couple, Samone and Jonathan, and Samone and her ex-lover, is good. However, all three are plagued by personal problems that overwhelm the plot and put a damper on any of the romance, which dosen't leave the reader in the mood for love.

WARNING: If you are looking for hot and steamy sex/love/coupling...THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU! Samone has sex twice in the book, once with each of the male leads and there is no description. The sentence before is something like..."She decided to iave into him," and the nest sentence is..."The next morining Samone felt..."

What's most disappointing is that ultimately, there's is no ending to the novel. None of the characters seem to have grown or the growth is not described. Nor, does it explaing how the author's relationships works out with the man she chooses. It really felt like the author was rushed.

I would not reccommend this book, instead try "No Commitment Required."

                    2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2003-09-17

It's been a month since I read this book, and reading the other reviews inspired me to write one myself. The book, at best, was fair. Hodge tells a story, I'll give her that, but the writing style is uninteresting. The style reminded of someone who writes the way they speak around their friends, etc. In some fiction it works, but not in this one.

The only likable character I'm afraid was Jon. I found Samone and Max to be annoying. It's a typical story where the character gives this guise of the "Independent Black Woman," but desperately clings on to the dream of marrying an equally if not more sucessful Black man who doesn't have the same feelings, regardless of how long they've been together, then has to pull some kind of plot or scheme that leaves everyone emotionally hurt in the long run just to keep him. Thinking back on this I wonder if she really loved him, or why she loved him? Because he's a successful Black man, financially secure, good looks; well dressed? It seems as if this is turning into the cliche of the genre of Black writing that 's sometimes known as "girlfriend" or "go girl" stories. Maybe it's me, but female characters of this ilk, though they appear to have it together, display a lot of pettiness for their age. Samone may be in her mid-thirties, but she might as well be 19. You can throw a rock at a roomful of books of this genre and find a Samone-like character. Where are the the intelligent, honest and mature characters with good heads on their shoulders?

Some reviewers complained about how Samone treated Jon. True, it was shameful at times, but not surprising. Given Samone's upbringing and past, it's natural for her to act this way. Who knows if she ever even had a white friend let alone a significant other before then? If Hodge wrote the character as a person who wasn't hung up on race, the treatment would definitely be different. I felt sorry for Jon at times, but I had to sigh in disappointment also because he just kept coming back for more.

I stopped reading this book for a few weeks because all of the components caused me to put it down. I finished it later for finishing sake. If you like this kind of genre, buy a used copy.
