Book Description
When Dorinda Makanaonalani Nicholson was six years old, she had a unique experienceshe watched the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor from her front yard.
On December 7, 1941, Dorinda and her family were living in Pearl City, on a small peninsula that extends into the center of Pearl Harbor. That Sunday morning, most of the American Pacific fleet was peacefully anchored only a few hundred yards from her front door. The waves of attacking Japanese planes flew over her home so low she could see the faces and even the goggles of the pilots. Today, she treasures an incendiary bullet, the only one remaining of the many that her father dug out of their burned kitchen wall.
In PEARL HARBOR CHILD, Dorinda Nicholson tells her personal account of the Japanese attack and the events that followed, including blackouts, rationing, air raid drills, victory gardens, censorship, gas masks and much more. While there are many books about the Pearl Harbor attack, PEARL HARBOR CHILD is the only one that tells the story from a civilian point of view, written by a woman, through the eyes of a child.
The book is a child's story, but not just for children. It is a voice from WWII that has not been heard before. The voice is that of an American child who tells what she saw, how it felt, what happened on that day and through the balance of what became World War II. The book was authenticated and originally published by the Arizona Memorial Museum Association.
The newly released 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition, published by Woodson House Publishing, contains more than 100 photographs, some never published before, plus a two-page map that pinpoints major events.

A book for all ages!.......2004-09-22
This book is excellent. As a young girl living on the Pearl City Peninsula, also known as Pearl Harbor, the author witnessed the bombing on 7 December 1941. She could see the burning ships that were anchored near her family's home. She recalls all too well that horrible morning and the days, weeks and months that followed. She wanted to share her story with the world. She has managed to do just that and very well I might add.
The author wrote about hearing the planes coming in flying low-then her family heard the explosions. They went outside and watched the attack. The family got into their car and tried to get to a safer area. They stopped long enough to see the battleships burning-then they hid in the sugarcane fields. The military police found them hiding and told them they could not go home. Instead they were sent to the recreation hall of a sugar mill where many other families joined Dorinda's family. It was almost a week later before the families in the sugar mill were allowed back to their homes. Dorinda's parents found shrapnel and bullets embedded in their walls. "Pearl Harbor Child" made me stop and really think about other people on the islands and what they must have gone through.
She wrote about expecting another invasion by the Japanese. She was the beaches lined with barbed wire. Everyone had to be fingerprinted and carry identification. Food became scarce. Soldiers were everywhere with bayonets on their rifles. Everyone was issued gas masks. Money had to be exchanged. Blackouts and curfews were strictly enforced. Mail was censored. The Japanese-Americans and other foreigners were placed in internment camps.
So much more can be found in this incredible book written in a simple manner to help others understand a little of what the Hawaiian people went through during the war. I credit the author with doing an excellent job. I was very impressed with "Pearl Harbor Child." This is truly a book for people of all ages to read!
An interesting perspective.......2001-04-23
This is an interesting book for the unique view which it provides, that of a child on the base during and after the attack. There are flaws in the pictures (two separate pictures describe pictured American planes as Japanese), but overall these are minor errors. A quick and interesting read!
Fantastic!.......2000-05-10
This book is just incredible! It brings WWII and the Pearl Harbor story alive and through the eyes of a child. It has lots of great pictures, not only of the attack, but also personal pictures of her during that time in Hawaii. An absolute must-read for any WWII buff or anyone who wants to hear the personal and moving story of a little girl who witnessed this historic event.
Wonderful!.......1999-07-13
Excellent book to help make children realize what the war was like - rationing, families torn apart, disruption of everything. Lots of photographs. Make sure to get the revised edition - the original did not have enough photos. Written at 5th grade level

Book Description
This workbook, based on a wide-ranging ten-year clinical study of anger and children by experts in the field, uses enjoyable games and exercises to teach the three critical components of parenting an angry child. The first component explores the concept of good parenting and how to recognize and resolve excess emotional baggage from the past that perpetuates the problem. The second shows how to understand, recognize, and deal with the anger a child expresses, and offers parents a base from which to teach anger management skills. The third component addresses how to listen without reacting to a child's anger, how to find practical alternatives to anger, and how to resolve this difficult emotion within the family structure. Illustrations, charts and tables are included.

Not for everyone.......2007-05-30
While the activities in this book may work for some people, I myself was put off by the often patronizing and otherwise corny tone. The focus of the book is on the entire family, which may be helpful for people with more dysfunctional family relationships. Even though I consider our family to have its share of "dysfunction," I couldn't relate our family to the six types of FAT or "Family Affective Themes," which sounded interesting to begin with but found nothing seemed to match up with the stated results or really make any sense as far as our family is concerned, therefore I questioned the validity of whether these categories are theoretical or oversimplified and whether they work in reality. If you believe your child's angry outbursts are the result of imitating behaviors learned at home then this book might be a good choice. As for our family, where the anger in one of our children seemed really "out of left field," the book that helped us is The Explosive Child: A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children by Ross W. Greene, which takes the perspective that angry explosive outbursts are triggered by an inability to handle changes and a tendency to become easily frustrated, comparing the deficit in these skills to more commonly understood "lags" in abilities such as reading or athletics. We also liked the workbook A Volcano in My Tummy: Helping Children to Handle Anger : A Resource Book for Parents, Caregivers and Teachers by Eliane Whitehouse and Warwick Pudney, which offers simple anger-related activities and advice for parents and teachers in a more straightforward and less condescending way.
EXCELLENT.......2007-02-28

Delightfully unmentionable.......2004-06-11
When I found this book I did a sanity check. I looked up a couple of recipies learned from my stay in the Phillipines. Sure enought they were both there and accurate - balot - a fertilized duck egg, and aso sena - dog stew.
I have cooked a few recipes from this book, but mainly it is a great conversation piece, and just a fun read. Where else can you read about preparing armadillo on the half shell, or grubs.
One interesting feature is that the book is indexed both by main ingredient and by country. Who is the best represented? - France and China.
A truly USEFUL cookbook!.......2003-05-26
I bought this book as part of my research for a college course/textbook on human interactions with animals. I'm a good cook, and broad-minded, so I tried quite a few of the recipes (the book has many excellent recipes for the "cheaper cuts" of conventional meat animals, and we have a butcher nearby that sells many of them), not just exotic ones (so our dog can relax!). All of the recipes I've tried have been winners!
Our local supermarket recently started selling frozen octopus, and both of the recipes we've tried have been hits. My wife HATES molluscs because of the texture, but she found eating octopus to be "like eating cheese". I like eating octopus because it not only tastes good, but most only live a couple of years and then die after reproducing.
All in all, a great book (and the only one of my reference books that I keep in the kitchen!). Buy it!
I own it and use it!.......2003-02-26
From a wide variety of ways to cook beef brains to roasted grasshoppers, this book has it all. Although some recipies may cause people some pause (there is an entire chapter on dogs and cats), even these show how limited Americans are in their eating choices. It begs the question, why are some animals only for pets and others only for food? Thought provoking with some truly excellent recipies, this book can do more than just shock and inform.
Complete Guide to World Cooking.......2001-06-17
This author knows cooking. You will find reliable ingredient list and techniques for preparing authentic dishes from around the world. I have had a copy since the early eighties, I believe, and find it an excellent resource for most any dish I can think of. I learned to use chicken feet and fish heads for soup stock, both of which are overlooked by many, except the commercial manufacturers. The commentary is wonderful and enlightening. This is a cookbook and a resource for any serious cook. If I had one cookbook, this would be it.
When a Big Mac just won't do.. A very special cookbook........1999-07-30
I doubt many folk will buy this book and actually use it. Its great for shock value and as a perfect gift for friends with a slightly warped sense of humor.
On the other hand, it might be very useful when the neighbors dog or cat gets really annoying..

Parents are doing a better job than they think they are. Author Susan Kohl has been a parent watcher for more than 30 yearsand she knows what parents do well. A kind of Mr. Rogers for parents, Susan Kohl's The Best Things Parents Do is a "best practices" book that parents will turn to again and again.
Each chapter focuses on one topic and contains stories and vignettes from Kohl's personal experience, relevant statistics and psychological truths, strategies to use, and things to think about or actions to take. Kohl knows that when parents begin to pay attention to what they do well, they can do more of itchanneling their children's energy into constructive endeavors, modeling positive behavior and discouraging negative behavior, and honoring their children's feelings as well as their own.

There was nothing in here that even closely resembled that someone had "thought through" what they were saying. It was just normal thinking and nothing new.
Filled with positive, can-do advice.......2004-06-06
Written by Susan Isaacs Kohl (a preschool director, teacher, parent eduator, and single parent of 30 years' experience), The Best Things Parents Do: You're Doing A Better Job Than You Think You Are is an uplifting self-help guide to nurturing self-sufficiency, high expectations, optimism, and emotional well-being in oneself and one's children. Positive, uplifting chapters guide the reader through means to reinforce family connections and sharing. An upbeat self-help guide filled with positive, can-do advice.
Buy This Book.......2004-04-22
This book is so refreshing to me as a mother. So often, my parenting books leave me feeling less than perfect, even guilty about what I'm not doing as a parent. Not this one. The Best Thing Parents Do is a supportive and helpful guide to finding your way through the thicket of parenting. It's terrific.
The Best Things Parents Do by Susan Kohl.......2004-04-21
I love this book. There is so much self-help literature available today...how to lose weight, how to be a better parent, how to get rich, organized, smart, etc. Practically every parenting book one looks at offers advice, sound or otherwise. "The Best Things Parents Do" is unique in its approach. Through a series of vignettes and stories gleaned from her considerable experience as a parent, preschool teacher and director, Ms. Kohl provides examples of real life parents finding creative, loving ways to handle real life challenges with their children.
Kohl writes, "What a privilege it is to be the person in a child's life who looks past his weaknesses to see the gifts that will become the gateways for new development." This is exactly what she does for parents! How refreshing! A "must read."
What Parents Do Right.......2004-04-20
This excellent book presents many examples of ordinary parents who found techniques that work with their children. You can decide which techniques are applicable to your own situation and try them out with your kids, or if you are not a parent, you can apply these techniques to important youngsters in your life. One of the examples tells about a four-year-old boy whose temper tantrums became worse when his parents followed the common advice of ignoring him. Noticing him without giving in to his demands helped. The last two chapters are about parents taking care of themselves and parents helping other parents.
Kohl stresses the importance of readers giving themselves credit for the good things they do as parents and of recognizing what other parents are doing that works. By doing more of what they do well and by observing how other parents handle difficult situations, parents can improve their parenting techniques. Suggested activities for parents help readers apply the concepts presented in this book. One such activity consists of rephrasing descriptions of one's child, such as "determined" and "persevering" rather than "stubborn."
I like this book because it promotes self-esteem for parents, as well as for their children, and because it provides many anecdotal examples of parents working out problems rather than a list of dos and don'ts. Another thing that I like about this book is the wide variety of examples. Having raised three children and having worked for almost forty years with parents and children--including parent counseling, teaching parents, and teaching and directing a preschool--the author bases her information on real-life, practical experience.

Book Description
broke upon the publishing scene in 1978 causing a sensation among UFO investigators and cynics alike. Long out of print, it is being reissued to amaze and confound a new generation of readers. This classic of UFO literature is a gripping account of abductions, genetic experiments, and actual contact with extraterrestrials. From information obtained during the hypnotic regression of Massachusetts housewife Betty Andreasson, Fowler creates a portrait of another world and another species.

The case study of a baffling, uniquely important abduction.......2002-08-04
Although some of the facets of Betty Andreasson's abduction experience fit neatly into the common aspects of the phenomenon as it has been described in more recent studies, there still remain several enigmatic, uncommon aspects to her tale that set it apart. At the time of publication (1979) Budd Hopkins and Whitely Strieber had yet to publish their groundbreaking books, and the abduction experience was little known and even less accepted by society as a whole. The Andreasson Affair basically links the earlier account of Betty and Barney Hill with the numerous abduction stories introduced to the public in the years since 1979. The story of an apparent implant removed from Betty's sinuses in her experience seems pretty mundane to us now, but this was an exciting discovery for Fowler and his associates in the late 1970s. It is a little difficult to review this book as an entity in itself because of the series of related books Fowler would publish later, but I want to review the book on its own terms.
Basically, the whole book centers around a single abduction event. On a winter's night in 1967, a number of small, grey, large-headed beings entered the Andreasson home through the solid kitchen door, put all of the family members besides Betty and her oldest daughter Becky in suspended animation, and took Betty alone into their ship. Becky observed some of the events but was eventually "frozen" by the visitors during the ordeal. Betty describes the visitors--how they seemed to glide when they moved, how they seemed to communicate telepathically, etc.-- as well as the ship as it appeared from both outside and within. She then relates the extraordinary experiences she had on board the ship, illustrating much of what she saw and described in a series of excellent drawings she did based on her hypnotically retrieved memories.. Besides getting a physical examination (including the apparent retrieval of an implant and a reproduction-based test), she describes many unique events. She was put into a chair, covered with a human-shaped molding, and given oxygen to breathe while her chamber was filled with some type of liquid. She describes traveling through tunnels into strange vistas. After traveling through a red atmosphere and then a green atmosphere, she experienced an unparalleled event, wherein a phoenix-like giant bird literally burned itself up only to reappear as a giant worm from the ashes, at which point a presence told her that she had been chosen. This presence she finally understood to be God, and all of her fear turned to elation. Betty is a deeply religious person, and her Christianity adds a distinct quality to her experiences--she interprets the events in religious terms, and it is problematic to determine if her subconscious is skewing her experience or if she is interpreting it correctly. The concept of religion tied so closely to an abduction experience makes some people very uncomfortable and makes the Andreasson Affair of great interest and importance in the field of alien abduction studies. This book leaves many questions unanswered, as well, and it certainly provides no definitive answers about the subject at hand. Whatever the merits of the case, though, it is one of the most thoroughly researched cases in the literature, and Raymond Fowler is a long-time, well-respected member of the UFO research community. Anyone interested in the alien abduction phenomenon has to look at this case, and the best way of doing so is in reading this incredible book.
A UFO Classic.......2001-02-15
What an amazing story - I can't believe it is entirely true (the Phoenix story), but all else seems to fit into place. It must rank as one of the classics of the UFO world. A very brisk introduction followed by a quick flow into the body of evidence leaves the reader wanting more, much more. Apart from the typographical errors, poor English and annoying American date format - it is a book that can hardly be put down. I can't wait to read the several sequels

How Objective Can a Fellow 'Abductee' Be?.......2000-11-04
My first attempt at reading this resulted in my putting it down after the "Phoenix" vision; my BS indicator went on full-tilt overload. Later the revelation that Betty Andreasson-Luca's "star language" was actually a phonetic variant of Gaelic (the now dead language of the Celts) caused more suspiscion, and finally the revelation that author Raymond Fowler believes himself to also be an abductee, along with Betty's second husband, Bob Luca, killed whatever shreads of remaining credibility Fowler had in regard to the impartiality that his investigation had.
Other contactees exhibit a strange ability to pull others into their experiences; Betty Hill and Whitley Streiber come to mind. The conclusion that nearly everyone is involved in some facet of the abduction experience is often reached by many UFO investigators, Fowler is not alone.
Fowler writes well and may well be sincere (compare this book with his later work 'The Watchers'). His documentation and impartiality, are, I'm afraid, suspect.
Objective Investigation.......2000-10-11
I read this book when it was initially published in 1978.The Investigator, Ray Fowler, was a nuts & bolts scientist at the outset. However strange the saga became he was courageous to publish all of the details. I think it addded to what we have learned in the present time by creating a path leading to it. Betty was one of the first to tell of Beings in Robes who seemed to be Space men, but as the tale progressed, another aspect was interwoven. The Beings who spoke through Betty, presented us with a riddle to solve. They gave information that seemed to be religious in nature, but is the ultimate in Spiritual teaching. I found that the message resonated within me. As the tale progressed it shares similarities with many of the present Authors books on the UFO-Spirit connection. Fantastic reading at any time.

This fascinating sequel both answers many of the questions raised by the first Andreasson Affair and presents some extraordinary new facts. Soon after the publication of The Andreasson Affair it became evident that the case was by no means closed. Mysterious unmarked helicopters shadowed Betty and her husband, Robert Luca, when they were at home and on vacation. Strange, apparently paranormal experiences plagued the newlywed couple.

Fascinating but problematic.......2002-09-04
This second book about the abduction experiences of Betty Andreasson Luca and her husband Bob Luca proves much more fascinating than the initial book. In a sense, this book is a prequel to its predecessor because it deals with alleged abductions experienced during Betty's childhood. What continues to set the Andreasson Affair apart from other abduction stories is the pervasive religious connotation placed by Betty on her experiences. Her story remains rather unique in this respect in the abduction literature in general. It is perhaps for this reason that her story is rarely mentioned by other researchers. One cannot say whether the events Betty recalls actually happened, although the bulk of evidence indicates that something indeed happened, and it remains virtually impossible to determine if her own feelings that the UFO occupants are angelic emissaries from God are correct or whether her own fundamentalist faith has worked its way into her mental processes as a way of making the unbelievable more acceptable and easier for her to deal with.
I am rather ambivalent when it comes to Andreasson's experiences, largely because this book betrays to me several weaknesses in the case. For example, the author only personally attended one hypnotic regression session described here, relying mainly on tapes and videos along with the information provided by his associate investigator. Distance accounts for his inability to attend the sessions, but it presents a problem to me. Most importantly, the hypnotist, while a learned behavioral psychologist, had no experience with the hypnosis of alien abductees; many times, I felt he did ask leading questions and sometimes raced ahead of his subject, leaving his own trail of information for her to follow. The absence of Fowler at the sessions left the hypnotist out on his own too often, and this accounted for most of the problems I have with the regression sessions.
Fowler also seems to be of two minds when making his points. He stresses the unique importance of this case of high strangeness, but he often rushes through other UFO materials to find anything at all that sounds similar to something Betty reported. He does attempt to place the Andreasson Affair in the context of abduction literature in general toward the end of the book, but he seems to go off on tangents that have little to do with the case at hand. He also cites sources that are questionable at best (such as an article from the Weekly World News tabloid). This does not mean the story is not true, of course. If Andreasson's revelations are accurate, this is an extraordinarily important case. For now, all of this information is greatly intriguing and invokes more questions than it answers, but there is just not enough evidence for the reader to come to a definite conclusion as to the truth of this matter.
Best Book of it's genre!.......2002-02-19
I first read the Andreasson Affair, and the Andreasson Affair Phase Two about 20 years ago.
I have yet to read any 'abduction' books that even come close to the detail of Mr. Fowler's investigation.
The mix of religious overtones has always struck me as the most fascinating aspect of the story. I beleive this is one reason these books are not as well circulated or referenced in public libraries as others of this type. (At Least This Has Been My Experience when trying to locate them at my local library).
Still these books have stood the test of time through debunkers, sceptics, and the like who have yet to explain away this account.
Whether you believe in the possibility of alien abductions or not, these books make for very exciting reading.....and I for one "Want To Believe".
So incredible it has to be true.......2001-05-01
Well the book says it all itself - within the very pages it asks whether this book is the result of drugs, hallucination, make-believe or just plane truth. How can such a complex story be invented by one mind and adhered to under such scrutiny? The story is just as incredible as Phase One and as such is a must for all UFOlogists. Still reeling from the incredible images conjured up, I can't wait to read Watchers (phase 3) and Watchers 2, followed by The Andreasson Legacy
This was a OK book........1999-12-19
I enjoyed this book throughly because it represented a real life scenario I like to act out myself.

interesting parallels.......2006-10-20
Herrera gives us a good recount of the development of the atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project. Where the narrative is not so much on the science and engineering problems that were tackled, but on how the development was closely interwoven with the politics of its time. The broad story is well known, and has been told numerous times before. How World War 2 and fear of Nazi Germany led many scientists in the US to put aside any qualms about nuclear weapons, and work feverishly to build the first atomic bomb. And many of the subsequent ones.
Herrera continues the story of how after the war ended, the knowledge gained profoundly influenced American and international politics.
What is relatively new in this book is how the author shows many parallels with the development of railways in the 19th century, throughout the world. In the US, this opened up the continent, and helped bind the new nation together.
