Book Description
Once North Korean forces crossed the 38th parallel in 1950, the lives of many Americans half the globe away, were disrupted. President Truman authorized a call up of enlisted, inactive reservistslike Richard B. Holmsten, an about to be married 20-year-old with a bright future. Replacements were needed for artillerymen killed during one disastrous day in August 1950. He was assigned to the Headquarters Battery of the 8th Field Artillery Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division.
This memoir, begins with Holmsten's transition from civilian to newlywed soldier. It covers training at Fort Lewis (Washington state), the voyage across the Pacific, and the readying of a Fire Direction Control Center for 105 Howitzers near Kaesong. It covers the early days of the conflict as the unit moved during the flux of battle, the problems faced as the unit retreated south of Seoul, and the efforts put forth as the unit struck north again. The major campaign covered concerns the crossing of the Han River in March 1951. The crossing was a massive but fast operation, and Holmsten's unit was responsible for firing 70,000 rounds of artillery against enemy forces. The daily happenings, hopes and fears of soldier life are explored, including the often-contentious relationship of enlisted reserve versus regular army. It concludes with the author's rotation back to civilian life. Photographs accompany the text.
Book Description
What has philosophy to do with the poor? If, as has often been supposed, the poor have no time for philosophy, then why have philosophers always made time for them? Why is the history of philosophyâfrom Plato to Karl Marx to Jean-Paul Sartre to Pierre Bourdieuâthe history of so many figures of the poor: plebes, men of iron, the demos, artisans, common people, proletarians, the masses? Why have philosophers made the shoemaker, in particular, a remarkably ubiquitous presence in this history? Does philosophy itself depend on this thinking about the poor? If so, can it ever refrain from thinking for them?
Jacques Rancière’s The Philosopher and His Poor meditates on these questions in close readings of major texts of Western thought in which the poor have played a leading roleâsometimes as the objects of philosophical analysis, sometimes as illustrations of philosophical argument. Published in France in 1983 and made available here for the first time in English, this consummate study assesses the consequences for Marx, Sartre, and Bourdieu of Plato’s admonition that workers should do ânothing elseâ than their own work. It offers innovative readings of these thinkers’ struggles to elaborate a philosophy of the poor. Presenting a left critique of Bourdieu, the terms of which are largely unknown to an English-language readership, The Philosopher and His Poor remains remarkably timely twenty years after its initial publication.
Customer Reviews:
Ranciere is a Revelation.......2005-04-17
Jacques Ranciere is one of the most important French philosophers writing today. This work deftly shows how sociologists have, over the years, taken control of Marxist thought away from the philosophers who once had (perhaps) too firm of a grip. Did the philosophers do this willingly? Should theorizing the poor go back into the hands of the philosophers? Do sociologists do a better job writing from the proletarian's perspective? You'll have to read the book to find out!
Rancière's most interesting work........2004-08-06
Here's to the belated arrival on the English scene of Rancière's most interesting work! Andrew Parker's Introduction, which tells the convoluted story of the book's prior aborted translation, is worth reading by itself. And Parker goes beyond this story to provide not only the most thorough bibliography on Rancière that an English reader will ever have seen, but a compelling explanation of the philosopher's place in relation to his, and our, contemporaries (Althusser, Balibar, Bourdieu), and of his importance. And the book itself is fascinating stuff: a journey through the philosophical tradition tracking the contempt-laden figure of the working man. The tone isn't as hard to pin down as some of Rancière's other work (e.g. the terrific "Ignorant Schoolmaster"), and is a little more scholarly, a little more humorous, and a little more accessible than you might expect, but it's still a difficult, intelligent, and rewarding text for the theoretically sophisticated reader.

Customer Reviews:
Very thorough. Has a large variety of excercises .......2007-09-09
I bought this for my mom who recently had her complete knee replacement surgery. When the physical therapist started coming over after the surgery, she looked over the book and started incorporating many of the exercises within in addition to the regular program she was doing. These have helped speed up her recovery and have allowed for the routine to change from session to session. By swapping exercises out, she maintains a varied yet beneficial recovery program. Although I got this after the surgery, the book also contains a lot of information for those who are considering having it done, including what to expect, how it's done, and other sections that help you plan ahead. Due to advances in knee replacement, the section on the surgery itself may be a little bit dated and does not include some of the newer procedures and materials used. All in all, an excellent and very complete book and one that anyone about the have knee replacement should definitely purchase and read
Knee Replacement.......2007-08-08
This book was ordered for my daughter-in-law who had just undergone double knee replacement. She read it in two days and uses it regularly as a daily manual and is already back to work parttime without the use of a cane most of the time.
very helpful information.......2007-07-20
I got this book just before having a total knee replacement. I didn't have time to read as much as I would have liked before the surgery but what I did get to helped me to understand why I would feel the things I felt afterward. It is a great tool for rehabilitation and everything in it matches what my physical therapist tells me. It is written to fit just about every situation. The exercises are clearly explained with photos to help. Great books for anyone having a total knee replacement.
Total Knee Replacement Book.......2007-06-08
I bought this book as I am going to have my knee replaced soon and needed some "inside" information. Book is very helpful, in fact I have started some exercises for pre-op. I would suggest this book to anyone contemplating knee replacement surgery.
A Must Have.......2007-05-02
I am in recovery of bilateral TKR. Have read 4 other titles- worthless.
But this book is tremendous. Every one should read it before their surgery and have right by their side during their recovery. I'm getting copies for my surgeon, parish nurse, and my therapists. The exercises are super - with excellent pictures and descriptions.

The "backbone" of my kitchen.......2003-01-16
This is a great book, not only in the recipies (which are all wonderful), but in the stories BEHIND the recipies: where it all came from. I used this book quite a bit in the States, and now that I live in Germany I don't know what I would do without it. Our friends are always asking me for TRUE American dishes (not just the hamburgers everyone associates with the States.)
Very Historical.......2000-04-11
I really love all thoseHistory stories about GeorgeWashington, Thomas JeffersonThe Pilgrims Etc. that went along with the recipes.I hope that Jeff Smith will return to Television very, very soon.
Great cookbook but a little preachy.......1999-01-08
This is a wonderful cookbook. I have used many of the recipes multiple times. When I first got it I read all the comments and liked it but after a while they get annoying. If you use the same recipe frequently you can't help but feel 'preached at' after a while.
Customer Reviews:
Authentic Cooking.......2000-02-03
Most Americans think of Chicken Parmessan, Alfredo sauce or Italian salad dressing when they hear Italian cooking. As an American soldier stationed in Italy I've never seen either of the above. They are all American inventions.
Italian cooking is very diversified. Venice is big on fish and seafood while the inland areas eat more meats. Jeff Smith's book is as close to authentic Italian cooking as one can get. The sheer number of recipes alone will give a person an insight of how Italian cuisine influenced modern American food.
The amazing thing is that there is at least one recipe that I wanted to try that I couldn't find all the ingridients for. It called for a Sicilian wine and being stationed near Venice I couldn't find it in any of the local wine stores. Great book. I will continue to use it for years after I come back to the US. It will remind me of the years that I spent here.
Great book for neophyte Italian cooks........1998-06-28
As an Italian tired of Olive Garden-fare Italian cuisine, I bought Smith's book with two ideas in mind: 1) I wanted to understand both the context of the dishes I hoped to prepare and the constituent ingredients (for instance, how is Parmesan-Reggiano made?) and 2) coming to the book with little previous cooking experience -- let alone Italian cooking -- I wanted to be able to prepare most of the dishes in the book. Smith's book excelled at both these. The book is well-written and easy to follow, but avoids pedantry. Some of my favorite recipes are: Italian peasant bread, Italian Rolled Chicken, Bracciole, and the Fresh Tomato Sauce Sicilian.

Incredible photography, great text.......2006-10-11
The beauty, dignity, and composition of the photos are enough to lure the reader. This book features the jewelry and accessories of African costume in different regions and tribes. It gives the reader information on the people wearing these lovely adornments, as well as describing their meanings and ceremonial uses, when applicable. While this represents only specific aspects of some parts of Africa, it is a beautiful glance at some tribal costumes still worn in increasingly fewer and fewer places.
Very Interesting Book.......2004-09-06
I found this book to be amazing...I loved the discussion about the different African cultures and most especially the pictures--I'm even considering purchasing another copy of this book just so I could frame some of the beautiful, highly colorful pictures. I am buying more books from those authors--I expect the other books to be just as beautiful and informative.
You get a rare jewel of a book in Africa Adorned.......2003-01-05
Angela Fisher spent seven years criss-crossing Africa, seeking out traditional forms and styles of jewelry and body adornment. The metal crafting, artistic modes and affectations of traditional piercings are stunning. The more extreme examples of African body art are already missing: cutting and/or scarring, limb binding (neck/arms/legs) and lip stretching are lost arts these days.
The photography is top notch, with highly detailed closeups and oversize, full-color images on most pages. Notes are included for each image, with geography, tribal information and craftsman's details for many pieces.
This is a great example of the "coffee table" book. I checked this title out of the library while in graduate school repeatedly until my mother gifted me with my own copy (thanks, Mom!). For artists and jewelers, this volume will be an endless source of inspiration.
Lovely!.......2001-09-25
This is a thoughtful and gorgeous peek at the diversity of the continent. The colors of the photos alone are worth the price! Fisher's more recent work, "African Ceremonies", with Beckwith, is even better, if possible. And folks, Africa contains 54 countries, over 800 different languages and thousands of dialects, and has around 730 million people. If you consider yourself an interested citizen of our world, don't just look at the pictures, learn about the continent! Many people have criticised the authors, for this and their other works, because they present an Africa that doesn't exist anymore, or they are patronizing and exploitative- I agree in part with this criticism, but I would add some balancing words. This continent has some of the richest cities in the world- Johannesburg being one, and some of the poorest villages- I was visiting in one of them several weeks ago in eastern Namibia. People have cellphones, people have no phones, some drive Lexuses and some drive donkey carts made from the beds of old pick-up trucks. "Old" ceremonies are vibrantly alive for some people, and simply unimportant for others, sometimes within the same family or community. The point is that the images from this book *are* parts of life on this continent, but obviously do not tell the whole story. However, it is just as wrong and short-sighted to dismiss cultures as it is to see only the "exotic". The funny thing is that I first saw this book and "African Ceremonies" at a Himba village in Kaokoland, Namibia, shown to me by a man who was wearing "traditional" Himba clothes, with red ochre on his skin and so on. We were paging through this book and my friend, who is also Himba but wears "western" clothes, commented on how weird the images were, to which his friend laughed and agreed. To them, the pictures of most of these ceremonies were just as alien as they are to most westerners. So, to everyone who likes to box "Africa" and "Africans" into one category, this is perhaps something to think about.
A timeless repository of jewelry..........2000-06-20
...origin as it relates to African cultural and creative expression and influence. Many designs and patterns we see repeated in contemporary jewelry design can be traced to African styles and designs created centuries ago - a fact beautifully exemplified in this book - with the added bonus of learning something about the meaning behind the particular adornment/piece of jewelry. The photos are brilliant! This book is a treasure and a highly recommended "must read" for everyone interested in design, jewelry and fashion history, and cultural customs, influences and contributions.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and Helpful.......2007-10-07
Dr. Plaut's book is informative, easy to read, and helpful. His direct, no-nonsense approach to treating asthma is reassuring, particularly after being newly diagnosed with asthma. His book has enhanced our ability to communicate with our son's doctors about his symptoms, prescribed medications, and signs of improvement. We are grateful for this comprehensive resource.
What a BLESSING!!!.......2005-10-19
This is a tremedous book for anyone that thinks they might have asthma or if they actually have been diagnosed with asthma. My 22 month old was recently diagnosed with asthma and even though I'm a college graduate I was having some trouble making sense of all the medications and reading the signs when he was having trouble since he's too young for a peak flow meter. This book covers it all in great deal and teaches you how to really manage your asthma whether you can use a peak flow meter or not. A wonderful book and worth far more than the list price. The author is actually an asthma specialist and indicated you can get the information in this book from your doctor, but it would take 10 hours. It would be difficult for you to remember and you would probably not want to pay for it! I think that is a good description of this book! It goes along exactly with what my doctor has been saying, only presents it in an organized manner along with some forms in the back to keep a daily diary and treatment plan. EXCELLENT!!!
Great guide for asthmatics.......2000-11-14
I have read a number of books and articles on asthma. This is by far the most comprehensive, up to date and it is easy to understand, too. I checked a copy from my library but it is so good that I am going to purchase it for my personal reference library as well as my child's school nurse. This book even has short section explaining cough-variant asthma, which is what both me and my son have...this is a little known type of asthma which in my case was mis-diagnosed for 35 years.
Lifesaver.......2000-08-24
Read Plaut's book shortly after my oldest son had his first asthma attack which nearly resulted in respiratory failure. Plaut's book is by far my best single source for useful information about causes, prevention and treatment. I consult it regularly and highly recommend it for anyone with or concerned about asthma. It was a lifesaver in my family!!!
A must have for patients, families, & health providers!.......2000-06-05
I'm a medical librarian/information specialist and I know that there are 'other resources,' but this 'Asthma Guide' should be your first choice because it provides all one needs to understand and manage asthma! I've had asthma for 25 years! And after all this time and treatment, I am reading Dr. Plaut's Asthma Guide, wishing I had this comprehensive resource sooner! After reading only a few chapters, I've already learned so much more to help me and others like me. Thank you Dr. Plaut!
