Book Description
Based on the latest declassified sources, this unique research tool greatly increases our understanding of the Soviet Union's mighty World War II effort and related Stalinist politics during its greatest hour. Parrish brings into one volume crucial information which was either not easily accessible in the west before or was widely scattered among many places.
Book Description
In this second volume of the unparalleled exposition of Rousseau's life and works, Cranston completes and corrects the story told in Rousseau's Confessions, and offers a vivid, entirely new history of his most eventful and productive years.
"Luckily for us, Maurice Cranston's The Noble Savage: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1754-1762 has managed to craft a highly detailed account of eight key years of Rousseau's life in such a way that we can both understand and even, on occasion, sympathize."—Olivier Bernier, Wall Street Journal
Maurice Cranston (1920-1993), a distinguished scholar and recipient of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of John Locke, was professor of political science at the London School of Economics. His numerous books include The Romantic Movement and Philosophers and Pamphleteers, and translations of Rousseau's The Social Contract and Discourse on the Origins of Inequality.

Healthy & Easy Recipes.......2007-01-07
Great recipes and you don't have to access a gourmet kitchen for a gazillion ingredients. Practical for starting a healthy New Year.
Inaccurate nutritional information.......2005-09-26
The book is basically laid out well but unfortunately, the nutritional information is computed incorrectly. If a reader is watching for lowfat recipes, the numbers given would be misleading.
For example, the apple walnut salad is said to serve 6 people with each serving containing 4.6 grams of fat. However, with 66 to 70 grams of fat in the entire recipe, the fat grams per serving would be 10 to 11 grams. Quite a difference!
Also, the chicken & grapefruit stir fry would have at least 6 grams of fat per serving rather than the 3 grams stated in the book. This problem would be significant for those with heart or coronary artery disease who are attempting to follow a very lowfat diet. I'm surprised the authors didn't have a nutritionist check these computations before going to press.
Informative book with great recipes.......2005-02-21
What a great book! We all know we should be getting 5 fruits and vegetables a day, but this book shows you how to do it - and do it easily.
The beginning section tells you why 5 fruits and vegetables a day are so important to your health, and gives you a few hints as to how to make easy substitutions that will up your daily count of vegetables and fruits (for example: use dried fruits instead of nuts when making muffins and breads). It gives advice on how to incorporate fruits & veggies into your meals - e.g., buy a new produce item every week - and shows you how to update typical meals to add more fruits & veggies.
The majority of the book is recipes, broken down into sub-categories: fish and shellfish, side dishes, appetizers, breakfasts, fruit salads, etc. The recipes are well laid-out, with helpful labels like "30 minutes or less" and "make ahead." They include nutritional information as well as the number of fruit & vegetable servings. I wish this section included more pictures, as the ones they do include are really helpful.
I found this to be an extremely helpful book. Not only do you get many healthy - and appetizing - recipes, but the front section of the book is a powerful reminder for why it's so important to get your 5 a day. I highly recommend it.
Terrific Book!.......2002-03-18
A great recipe book to get those extra fruits and vegetables in your diet. Well written, nice layout with some wonderful, mouthwatering pictures. Some delicious recipes that aren't quite the ordinary, but yet aren't so different you're afraid to try them....or can't find the ingredients. Highly recommended!
Both seasonal and year-round family favorites!.......2002-02-09

Rebuttal to "true hikers".......2001-02-02
Yes, the book may be of little relative interest to those who backpack for many miles and multiple days. But that's not the audience for whom the book was written. This is meant to help those dog owners who consider it daring to sleep in a pull-behind popup camper and walk a couple of miles on a trail through the woods understand how to include their dogs on these trips. For this audience, the book provides the appropriate information. If you would like to share a low-tech low-risk camping experience with your dog, this book will help you do that.
This Book is not for the "True" Dog Hiker.......2000-07-01
My sister (who lives in northwestern Montana) and I both agree that this book is not for the TRUE canine trail hiker. She and I both are avid canine hikers and we feel this book does not do our "sport" any justice. "On the Trail with your Canine Companion" is a book better suited for a person who is interested in taking his or her dog for a WALK, not a HIKE. This book gives innane and obvious trail "secrets" such as this enlightening insight: "Dogs love to be petted, which fulfills their need for touch."...DUH!
Ms. Smith's title is misleading. There is no information that would help canine HIKERS. If you DO buy this book, just substitute the words "leisurely walk" for the word "hike" and you'll be okay.
And let me make this comment about the pictures in this book: Velcro tennis shoes are NOT proper trail gear, thank you.
--A TRUE Canine Hiker
From a Trail-Wise Reader, a True Disappoinment.......2000-06-29
Having completed 40-50 short and extended hikes with my two dogs, I found this book to be a waste of time. It is obvious from the book contents and pictures that the author has hiked (TRULY hiked) very little. The information in this book contains information that any person with common sense would know, and she offered little, if any, new insights into the world of dog hiking. In addition, the pictures in this book are laughable. The "hikers" in the pictures are ill-equipt, display poor trial manners, and are certainly not dressed to hike in ANY conditions.
Take my advice, skip this book. It's not worth the paper it's printed on.
A comprehensive guide to prepare for hiking with your dog........1998-09-29
From suggestions on conditioning to tips on what to bring, this book tells you what you need to know to prepare yourself, and your dog, for hiking and backpacking together. The book also includes helpful first-aid information, but you really should buy a book devoted to this topic. Another very important element that is not stressed enough is trail etiquette. It is clear that Smith loves her dogs and enjoys taking them on outdoor trips, but she also makes it clear that there are others on the trail who may not take kindly to dogs. Smith offers ways to ensure that you and your dogs are courteous trail users who don't detract from the wilderness experience for other travelers. The author includes some of her own experiences, which makes for a better read and also shows the reader real-life situations. Readers also will find the listings in the back of the book indispensible. Smith lists suggested reading, manufacturers of dog-related products and parks information for each state.

Customer Reviews:
HORRIBLE.......2006-08-18
I too wish I had read past the first reviewer. Must have been a born optimist!! The best thing about this book, THE PRICE. What a total waste of my time. I learned stringing beads as a toddler! I was looking for a GLASS BEAD BOOK and how to MAKE THEM. Why not put this book with the stringers! Shame on you Amazon for leading us down the wrong path. No wonder this book did not have pictures of the inside. shame shame shame!
Very Misleading Title.......2006-05-01
I should have read the other reviews first. If you are looking for a book to outline and explain the technique of glass bead making, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK!!!! Only buy this if you want some pictures of beads or are interested in making jewerely.
Misleading Title!.......2006-04-23
While I do believe that this book has merit, it is as a JEWELRY MAKING BOOK, not as a bead making book. I feel that the Title of the book is misleading.....to me, a "Bead Artist" is a person who MAKES beads, not a person who makes jewelry with beads. That is a "JEWELRY ARTIST". A small point, but significant, since this book is listed under "Lampwork". Nice photographs, and as I said, the book has merit if you are looking for some VERY SIMPLE stringing ideas.
The Art & Soul of Glass Beads.......2006-04-05
As a glass artist I am inspired by all that other glass artists accomplish, and this book offered a lot of inspiration. Lovely stuff!
A book about stringing, NOT about making beads.......2004-09-17
Some of the other reviews and the editorial info fail to make it clear that this book shows you exactly how to string some (not very inspiring) necklaces with lampwork beads, but it is NOT a book about making lampwork beads. There are exhaustive (and to me anyway, pretty tedious) biographies of a lot of artists, but there is so little about their actual techniques that I was only frustrated. It's not very informative to say, you can make anything out of Moretti glass! Well, sure, but how? So, if you would like to know the stories of some bead artists, and if you want to know exactly how to construct a few necklaces, you will like this book. For me... well, I would have given it 1 star, except that it's hard to blame the book for being not what I expected. I would have preferred to see the artists discuss their techniques in a lot more detail.

Alpha Lipoic Acid: Nature's Ultimate Antioxidant.......2006-03-19
A very interesting book, after reading it I began taking alpha lipoic acid for glucose control. So far so good
INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE.......2001-07-23
A very informative book about free radicals, anti-oxidants and longevity, focusing on the role of Alpha Lipoic Acid and its use in anti-aging in general, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and in neuroprotection. Other chapters deal with this role of this potent anti-oxidant in inflammatory disorders, HIV, and vision disorders like macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma. I found the section on the main free radical culprits and the major protective anti-oxidants very interesting. One can even work out your own anti-oxidant profile in a question-and-answers section. There is a resource guide for buying it as a supplement, a section on questions and answers, a very extensive bibliography and a thorough index.
ALA worked for my elderly father.......2000-08-25
My father was suffering terribly from the effects of aging, and we
were all seeking alternative supplements to help him. Sosin's book
gave some very thorough information on alpha lipoic acid. We double
checked this information at a good site...We found out that ALA is
good for us younger people too. Thanks to Sosin's book..., my
father is doing much better. He's back with us now.
Great things I underline red. The book is red all over now........1999-04-21
If you start using a unsuspected pill to improve your life and it works you feel that the books are a gift. Where I live everything has to be scientificly proven. Pycnogenol is in the book and I use it against Restless Legs. The therapeutic recommendations are a great relieve for living on with Alpha Lipoic Acid. Not dangerous unless you take for 1000 US dollars a day. I started with 3 times 50 mg and are using now 9 times this doses. As my Glucose values dropped from average 11.5 mmol/liter to 7.5 mmol/liter I really feel fantastic. And I sleep the sleep of the innocent rather than the two hour Stressed naps. Great job by Allen Sosin. Great to have him via Amazon books on the Internet. Fred van Waaijen, 60 years old again going strong in Amsterdam the Netherlands, Europe.
