Book Description

An 1827 graduate of West Point describes military life in the mid-nineteenth century as commander of the famous "Mormon Battalion" of the U.S. Dragoons, which pulled their wagons over trackless desert to San Diego to rejoin General Kearney in the conquest of California. Commissioned a brigadier general in the Union Army soon after the start of the Civil War, Cooke was given command of the cavalry forces in Washington, D.C. He served in the Black Hawk and Mexican wars.

5 out of 5 stars Pre War Travels of a Civil War General.......2005-04-02

In the years before he became a Civil War general, Cook was on several expeditions across the American west. In 1827 he was in St. Louis, at about 18 years old. In the 1840's he was fighting in California during the Mexican war.

In this book, which he wrote from his journals he describes the west as it was before settlement began. This book is a reprint of the original book published in 1857. It reads just a trifle old fashioned, but clear and rich in detail from a time of which little has been written.

      Book Description

"Centred in Truth:The Story of Swami Nitay-swarup-ananda" is the sole comprehensive biography of the illustrious monk (1899-1992) who worked tirelessly to bring Vedanta's timeless wisdom into the mainstream of global thought and endeavor and who created Calcutta's renowned, UNESCO-acclaimed Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture. This two-volume portrait captures the intellectual genius, loving personality, pragmatic wisdom, and exalted purpose of this innovative visionary, whose campaign for a humane world civilization has inspired scholars, artists, public figures, and spiritual seekers worldwide.

The well-documented biography in Volume 1 chronicles the Swami's efforts over decades of accomplishment to translate Vedanta's sublime spiritual ideals into powerful human reality. Volume 2 collects writings, reminiscences, and memorial seminars that bring the Swami's personality to life from various points of view and illustrate the power of his spiritual love and goodwill.

As a student, Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda was caught up in the spiritual fervor that was aroused in India by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-86) and further nurtured by his apostle, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902). As a young monk, Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda developed a resolute commitment to Vivekananda's universal message, which—integrating the ancient faith of Vedanta with modern science and humanism—called for empirical discourse and social emancipation along with the liberation of the human spirit.

Ever progressive in outlook, Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda was, in 1934, given the responsibility of organizing the Order's proposed Institute of Culture. He and his subcommittee of India's most illustrious scholars and monks drew up an international charter for the Institute, a full decade before the Charter of the United Nations. “Taking its stand on the conception of the divinity of man, the oneness of humanity and the unity of all religions,” it began, “the Institute attempts in its humble way to supply the cultural and spiritual foundations of a new personality among the men and women of the world, and to equip them as proper and adequate instruments for the establishment of world peace.”

This modern vision of spiritual reality, as embodied in the Vedas, the most ancient of scriptures, became the inspiration for many as Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda translated his visionary mandate into action. His innovative educational programs were anchored in an awareness of the spiritual unity underlying all aspects of human life. By 1961 the Institute of Culture, in its own magnificent facility, had emerged on the world stage and was working with UNESCO as the prototype for intercultural institutions worldwide.

The Swami himself was a prototype of the global citizen. His hopes for a humane civilization based on wisdom, empathy, and beneficence traveled with him around the world. As the U.S. State Department's guest in 1962-63, he exchanged ideas with such notables as United Nations Secretary General U Thant, Chief Justice Earl Warren, and the philosopher Paul Tillich. His publications were supported by UNESCO and by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. His plans for enlightened education inspired many of the world's leading philosophers, educators, scholars, scientists, and public figures.

Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda's approach, inseparable from Vedanta's vision of spiritual unity, was to confront the world's problems with practical solutions. Scientific and technological advances had outstripped humankind's moral capacity to cope with their perilous consequences. He spoke insistently about the affinity of Vedanta with modern science. Vedanta has been called the “science of the soul,” he said, because it probes the innermost life of the human psyche, just as physics and biology probe the mysteries of the phenomenal world. But Vedanta is far in advance of modern science when it comes to the wisdom needed to temper technology's tremendous power. The “science of the soul” cannot enter the “psychology of the future,” as he put it, until there exists the spiritual and moral power to balance the world's technological power. For all his technological wizardry, modern man still needs to develop a world conscience.

In Vedanta there is no need for conversion—only a spiritual deepening within one's own faith-tradition and a heart-expanding awareness of the entire human community. The timeless wisdom of Vedanta philosophy, which sees every soul as divine and every religion as a path, was Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda's touchstone and has been a wellspring for interfaith dialogues and explorations of pluralism. It can play an equally important—indeed, a crucial—role through application of its holistic perspective to our present global crises.

Prominent scholars and religious leaders have hailed Centred in Truth as a monumental work that reveals the global vision of Vedanta and Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda's immeasurable contribution in bringing that vision to life. This unique two-volume portrait of a truly great spirit should be of abiding interest to those who share the Swami's passionate commitment to religious harmony and world peace.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect choice for presenting this great man's life.......2001-07-06

Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda (1899-1992) was a famous and brilliant monk of the Ramakrishna Order who founded and developed the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in Calcutta, India. Centered In Truth is an outstanding two volume testament to his life and wisdom. Volume One (654 pages) presents his fascinating biography, including two visits to the United States. Volume Two (474 pages) is collection of his personal writings, commentaries, reminiscences, and memorial lecture programmes in his honor. Shelley Brown became a Vedantist in 1953 and began a spiritual dialogue with Swami Nitya-swarup-ananda that continued until the day he died and therefore is the perfect choice for presenting this great man's life, thought, and accomplishments to a western readership. Highly Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and shallow.......2007-01-25

Based on reviews on Amazon, I purchased this book expecting great things, but it left me very, very disappointed.

Having just read two wonderful books by the Arbinger Institute ("Leadership and Self Deception" and "The Anatomy of Peace"), I was very interested in the HeartMath approach to clear thinking, decision making, and leadership. I had hoped for a book that would challenge me to think differently about my approach and relationships with others. But, instead of deep thinking, this book merely features a handful of techniques designed to leave a person in control of a moment.

The techniques themselves are defined in just a few pages, and the rest of the book feels dedicated to convincing you that others believe the few tips are meaningful. And what really turned me off was the regular suggestion that a CD of music--composed by the author and available at additional expense, of course--would really help one achieve the state of Freeze Frame.

I found this book quite shallow. Maybe I'd feel differently had I not been somewhat profoundly moved and challenged by the Arbinger Institute books, but I have not and cannot recommend this book to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Simple solution to life stresses.......2005-03-04

We've all seen around us some people who, whenever things go wrong, seem to have this knack of riding over storms easily and picking themselves up again. Is it all in the mind? They must be able to curb the negative thoughts churning inside their heads. What allows them to do that? By looking on the bright side of things and appreciating what they see.

According to the author and the HeartMath Institute he heads, Freeze Frame is a technique that allows us to be like the resilient ones described above. Simply put, you take your mind off the stressful situation and focus on your heart. Then you think of something pleasant and feel it in your heart. Personally, I practice this technique and can attest to its effectiveness. It is simple and easy to do. It is scientifically proven. In fact, what this book has done is to explain in medical and scientifc terms what most of us have known intuitively - our heart needs to work with our mind so that we can have inner peace and harmony. When our heart and mind are entrained, we enjoy better health and relationships.

However, this technique's simplicity may also be its Achilles' heel. Some people doubt its effectiveness, while others may find it hard to remember to practice it regularly. Without regular practice, which is necessary to help build the heart 'muscle', one does not enjoy the benefits mentioned in the book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent technique to begin with.......2000-06-19

This new edition of Freeze Frame makes one of the first and key tools of the HeartMath system even more accessible and attractive. It offers a most valuable technique: recognize and freeze the stressful frame of life, shift away from the mind and focus on the heart, step into a resourceful state, tap into one's heart intelligence, and come up with alternative solutions. Much sound research by people like Rollin McCraty and William A. Tiller undergirds such simple techniques. It works and it is so streamlined and clearly packaged that anyone can learn and master. I hope it will continue to serve many people. That is why I rate the book with 5 stars. My one reservation in reading through all the seven books by the author and a few others by the staff of the HeartMath Institute is the authors'tendency to reduce all the beautiful research down to a few key techniques and concepts repeated over and over in most of the books. I long for further developments. Coming from a background immersed in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), I hope people can be taught to generate their own techniques in changing their perceptions and develop a fuller and resourceful life by tapping into the unique role of heart intelligence.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dreadful editing ruins the content.......2000-06-14

I found the information in this book to be minimally useful, and worse, marred by a lack of careful editing. Example: "more livilier" or "more fresher." Also, consistent use of "your" when the author meant "you're." Also, many repetitions of the same "facts," often under the same subheading.

I find such problems reduce my trust in what the author has said. Once or twice is understandable. Repeated over and over, such carelessness truly diminishes the validity of the material in the book.

Overall, this book has the look and feel of a low-quality, self-published book. That's not a comment on the quality of self-published tomes -- many are outstanding and professionally done. This one, alas, is not.

In addition, many of what the author purports to be "facts" are now proven to be old, questionable suppositions, many of which have already fallen out of favor. Many of these are fat and cholesterol related myths from the past 20 years, and which have been updated or questioned or rethought in the past few years, especially in the light of the efficacy of new theories of eating high protein/low carbohydrate diets, for example.

In sum: This book seems like a quickly thrown-together reworking of old material that the author has simply quoted from the popular press -- not a good source for hard facts. I'd like to know that, like good cookbook writers, he has tested each of these hypotheses for himself.

Definitely would like to get my money back for this book.

        4 out of 5 stars It's fun information.......1999-08-06

This book is filled with fun information. However, I agree the book is edited quite poorly.

4 out of 5 stars very interesting but not well edited.......1999-07-07

I have found Bader's book to be very interesting and full of stuff I didn't know. However, the editing is none too good- things are repeated in the same category; there are plenty of typos and word omissions, etc. Also, I'd like some idea whether his "hints" actually work or is he printing them to fill page space?

This is a great book, includes many more unusual types of rodents (jirds, degus etc). However it contains nothing about ferrets, only rodents and rabbits. This book is translated from dutch, so there are lots of errors, and the grammer can be amusing at times.

what a great book. I never knew you could achieve such a complex looking block with just 1 fabric. I've made 3 different blocks the hardest part was chosing the one I liked the best.

5 out of 5 stars What Fun !!!!!.......2007-09-15

If you love those lucious large-scale prints, but don't know how to make them work in a project, try this technique! The piecing is easy and FUN, because every block is different. You'll get addicted !! Very clear instructions and lots of photos to make the process simple.

I took a class with Maxine to learn this technique before the book was published. I bought the book just to have it. It is well written. The quilt blocks are really quick and easy to make and I've gotten wonderful responses to the quilts I've made using this technique.

When the book is used in conjuction with a class it is a wonderful teaching tool. The author's visual examples help you in making the best selection of fabric for any of the projects listed in the book. Learning this new technique will open your eyes to the large scale prints in quilt shops that you might otherwise have passed over.

                        5 out of 5 stars I *LOVE* this book!.......2007-06-01

I am so glad I found this book. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys quilting. The quilts are exhilarating to make-- each block is different than the last, and taking the blocks to the "design wall," as the author calls it, is an amazing process: There are so many ways to put things together, and so many ways to use color with this technique.

While the quilts look complicated, they are actually pretty simple to put together. The seams are all straight seams, and the author's directions are easy to follow.

The only thing I would mention that the author didn't, is not to use hand-dyed batiks with these projects. While they seem like a perfect fit, the patterns are not exact enough to make the kaleidoscope-like blocks work.

The next two quilts will be for my kids, and I can't wait to take them to the design wall. The fabric will be the same for both quilts, but we'll end up with two very different pieces of art for my children. I am so excited that I can involve my family in my hobby.

                          Book Description

Crazy Woman Creek is a collection of prose and poetry about real women in the West and their connection to a larger whole. Long troubled by the misguided images of skinny cowgirls on prancing palominos, the editors embarked on a mission to set the record straight. They wanted these western women to reveal the realities of their lives in their own words. In Crazy Woman Creek, 153 women west of the Mississippi write of the ways they shape and sustain their communities. Whether these groups are organized, imposed, or spontaneous, this collection shows that where women gather, anything is possible. Readers will encounter Buddhists in Nebraska, Hutterites in South Dakota, rodeo moms rather than soccer moms. A woman chooses horse work over housework; neighbors pull together to fight a raging wildfire; a woman rides a donkey across Colorado to raise money after the tragedy at Columbine. Women recall harmony found at a drugstore, at a powwow, in a sewing circle. Lively, heartfelt, urgent, enduring, Crazy Woman Creek celebrates community connections built or strengthened by women that unveil a new West.

This anthology is a collection of essays and poems by women who live (or lived) in the American West, on their idea of what community means to them.

Some of these women are professional writers, and some are previously unpublished writers, but some simply have a story to tell.

And what stories! These women write in a straightforward and unpretentious manner about the women (and men) who lift them up, aggravate them, support them, teach them, and, more often than not, need their help in return. We hear stories of Native American healers, church groups serving funeral lunches, firefighters, book clubs, families, snow-shovel posses, and politics in the West.

I feel like I want to give this book to all of my close women friends, whether they physically live in my community or not.

The essays in this book will definitely make you think about your own connections to others, no matter what size town you call home. I highly recommend it, and cannot wait to get my hands on the other anthologies by these editors (Leaning into the Wind, and Woven on the Wind).

                          5 out of 5 stars A must for any woman--western or not.......2004-12-12

To be quite honest, the only reason I bought this book was because my friend's essay was in it. Wow! now I want to buy all of the books in this series of anthologies.
These are true stories by our friends, neighbors, and people we probably don't much care for who live down the lane. And because these women so fearlessly let us into their lives, we are able to be part of that circle of comapssion and understanding that is what I believe is the true nature of humanity.
Yeah I know, I'm making it sound like it's a bluepprint for world peace--but maybe it is!
Anyway, these are stories(and poems) that will make you weep and laugh out loud --I would recommend it to any type ofwomen studies groups.

Crisis and Decline is an engrossing and much-needed study of the Unionist(largely Protestant) community in the south of Ireland from the 1880s through Irish independence and the civil war to the 1930s. The author, a fellow at Trinity College Dublin, draws heavily from first-person sources as well as government and economic statistical abstracts to paint a thorough, if not quite complete picture of a once-powerful minority. Beginning with the Unionist convention in Dublin in 1885, it follows the political and economic trajectory of the Southern Unionists from the birth of the Unionist Party through the Home Rule bill debates, their abandonment by the Ulster Unionists in 1918 and the British withdrawl from the 26 counties in 1922. More interesting, however, are dozens of first hand accounts and testimonies of the southern minority's experiences during the Irish War of Independence and Civil War. Collected from all walks of life and all regions of the 26 counties, the book paints a vivid picture of a once-vibrant community in disarray. The author has also included an autobiographical sketch of his days at Trinity in the 1930s and 40s, an interesting account of the Trinity and Dublin of the Emergency period, of special interest to those familiar with or seeking historical/social background to the Dublin and Trinity College of Donleavy's The Ginger Man. This book may be a disappointment to those seeking a deeper analysis of the effects of the decline of the Protestant community in the 26 counties on the economic, political, and cultural life of the Irish Republic and its implications for current developments in Ireland as a whole. While good use is made of empirical/statistical evidence, it is nevertheless intended to be a largely anecdotal history, at which it succeeds. Crisis and Decline is a worthwhile read for all those interested in the history, politics, culture and society of Ireland in the decades immediately preceding and following independence.
