    Book Description

When the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, many American men joined the U. S. Navy and Coast Guard. Some became crew members of small ships they called the Donald Duck Navy. These ships guarded America's coastlines, stalked submarines, and escorted convoys across the oceans. In Europe and in the Pacific they swept mines and also led landing craft to invasion beaches.

Life aboard the ships was crowded and cramped with no privacy. They pitched, yawed, and rolled viciously, decks awash, forecastles, pilot houses, and flying bridges buried under water. They weathered the worst of nature and the enemy, and their crews endured and fought the war as bravely as did other sailors. These young men were a special type, mostly reservists with no previous sea duty. They learned fast and performed all the missions assigned to them.

Like many sailors, they played music, wrote poetry, drew, painted, and crafted items that were original and artistic. It is amazing that they had the mental and physical discipline to do this under cramped and brutal conditions This book is a tribute to them, and it helps to preserve and record some of those original creations.

It was enlightening to learn about the original works of Navy and Coast Guard sailors. This is a great book. - U. S. Coast Guard.

Veigele gives details of life on a small combatant through sailors' arts and crafts. These ships fought the enemy and the sea and played important parts in winning WWII. This book is a "must read." - Obie Armstrong PC 1204, Past President of the Patrol Craft Sailors Association.

        Book Description

This collection contains hitherto unknown letters exchanged between Wittgenstein and the most important of his Cambridge friends and includes editorial notes based on archival material not previously explored. Wittgenstein's correspondents are not his disciples, but those he recognised and valued as his mentors - Russell, Moore, Keynes, Ramsey and (represented by a single but important letter) Piero Sraffa. The collection provides a fascinating glimpse of the philosopher - Wittgenstein appears in turn withdrawn and affectionate, fierce and censorious, happy to collaborate and sure of his own judgement. Four quarrels and four reconciliations are documented, along with Wittgenstein's struggles to publish his Tractatus, his retreat from the world and his eventual return to philosophy. It will prove a remarkable read for both students and academics interested in Wittgenstein's work and his place in twentieth-century philosophy.

        Book Description

Living with type 1 diabetes requires intensive, nonstop daily management, week after week, year after year. This means that young people with type 1 and their parents have to become experts on their own condition—even better informed than the average doctor—and able to self-manage its daily demands. The Type 1 Diabetes Book is the most authoritative book ever published on the condition and will become the one book that every young person with type 1 diabetes will need to own. “In this book,” writes author Dr. Ragnar Hanas, “I speak directly, all the time, to you, the person with diabetes. The topics covered range from how your body works to sweets, treats, and ice cream; from insulin injection technique to long-term complications; and any number of subjects in between. With this book at your side, you can easily and quickly get to know about diabetes and how to handle it with confidence in all the different situations that life has to offer.” With 40 chapters, 430 graphs and illustrations, 168 medical terms explained, and 813 references to articles and journals, no other book available on this subject comes remotely close to the quality or amount of comprehensive information offered here.

5 out of 5 stars Type 1 Diabetes: A Guide for Children, Adolescents, Young Adults--& Their Caregivers, 3rd Edition.......2007-09-21

I have found this book VERY helpful. From time to time we have questions/concerns that come up, we have found easy to understand answers/advise for real life issues.

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good!.......2007-09-09

I have only received this book recently, so I have not read the whole thing. The author doesn't recommend reading it from cover to cover, but to use it more as a reference. I started reading it at the beginning and am now on page 46. It is so interesting, and easy to read, that I see no reason NOT to read it straight through! Even though a lot of the information is technical, it is written in such a way so as to make it fairly easy to understand. My 13-year-old son has only had Type 1 diabetes for three months now and I am hungry for this kind of information. I want to understand this disease as much as possible, and so far, this book is great!

        5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-02

This book is wonderful. I got it shortly after my son was diagnosed and read it cover to cover. I was so happy to have a book with so much information that didn't make me cry from the introduction. So many of the diabetes books begin with a very clinical review of the complications of diabetes. I continue to refer to this book and learn things as I gain more experience with diabetes care. This is a fantastic book loaded with information, but at the same time it is not intimidating like some of the others. Best book I have so far - great reference.

5 out of 5 stars Really a guide for diabetes.......2007-03-29

It is very hard to hear that your son has juvenile diabetes.
I believe docs even don't know the problems you may have, when you 're trying to treat diabetes. After reading this guide now we're more comfortable and can manage diabetes well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for health providers and patients.......2006-12-21

This book is a very useful resource for health providers involved in the care of type 1 DM patients. The authors extensive personal experience is adequately distilled in a clear way. There are many tables and graphs that are useful in everyday practice as well as in patient education. I found the references to be impressive. This book will be a valuable addition to your medical reference library. A spanish version would be most helpful for non-english speaking patients and MD's.

Charleston, that slightly starchy though gracious Southern city, seems an unlikely place to have made a heroine of the decidedly unstarchy Emily Whaley. Yet Mrs. Whaley's remarkable garden was a standard stop for many years on the Historic Charleston Foundation's annual garden tour, and Mrs. Whaley (who, despite her gregarious informality, had impeccable Southern bloodlines) was a popular social fixture, having founded the Cotillion, the city's most upscale dancing school. Entertaining was Mrs. Whaley's second-favorite hobby, and Mrs. Whaley Entertains is a slim, delightful collection of family anecdotes and timeless Southern recipes, salted liberally with Mrs. W.'s strong opinions ("Never serve anything to a guest that you haven't made successfully two or three times and made quite totally yours") and abundant good humor ("A good hostess simply wants you to enjoy yourself and won't care a whit if you refuse something as ungodly looking as an oyster"). Emily Whaley died in June 1998; this pleasant guide to Southern hospitality is a fitting memorial. --Barrie Trinkle

        Book Description

When Mrs. Whaley and Her Charleston Garden came out in spring 1997, it took the gardening world by storm. You didn't think she'd keep the rest of her strong opinions to herself, did you? Not on your life. She's back, with her other favorite hobby--cooking delicious meals. And she's just as "quotable" as ever: "If the hostess is all a-flutter like a butterfly caught in a net--then, as the Irish say, 'I wish I was to home and the party was to hell.'" Don't serve guests' dishes "you haven't made successfully two or three times--and quite lately." And after supper, "Leave the dishes on the table, blow out the candles, shut the door and serve finger desserts and coffee in another room . . . do not let your guests help you clean up!" In addition to advice, Mrs. Whaley has opened her personal scrapbook of receipts and selected one hundred of her favorites, including regional delectables like "Edisto Shrimp Pie," great dinner dishes like "Louisa Hagood's Ginger Chicken" and "Miss Em's Pork Tenderloin," old-fashioned breakfast breads like "Nan's Little Thin Corn Cakes," and true discoveries like "Dancing School Fudge." Just as he did in their first acclaimed, best-selling collaboration, novelist William Baldwin perfectly captures the octogenarian cadence: "Inviting people to break bread with me challenges my skills at cooking and fielding a congenial gathering of people. And I love a challenge."

5 out of 5 stars We won't see her like again.......2005-11-09

I care very little about cooking, but I care very much about this book after having re-read it several times. Mrs. Whaley exemplified a particular Southern specimen that used to be known as "old ladies", with both of the words intended as compliments--it was an accomplishment in a region subject to disease and storms to grow old, and it was also an accomplishment to be known as a lady, which should never be confused with having money. In this book, Mrs. Whaley was pleased to share the lessons that living into her eighties provided her, with never a word of complaint about wars, hurricanes, widowhood, changing societal mores, or anything else. To the end of her life, she delighted in acquiring the latest tools and gadgets, she entertained prodigiously, she was much amused by the minor scrapes and foibles of her young adult grandchildren, and she maintained one of the most celebrated gardens in a gardening-mad city. Reading this book is like sitting down for a long afternoon before the fireplace with the grandmother we all wish we had, enjoying a long chat over delicacies that she prepared herself in her kitchen. I may never use any of the recipes, but I'm already using some of her lessons about living life joyously and cultivating friendships.

        4 out of 5 stars A memorable meeting.......1999-12-30

How I would have loved knowing Mrs. Whaley beyond the pages of her books. She has the most deliciously charming perspective on a world gone by and presents her recollections with a spirit right at home in today. She's observes with pithy candor and humor and reading her nuggets of advice is a real treat. Besides, the recipes look marvellous--and very Southern.

        5 out of 5 stars Delightfully enjoyable.......1999-11-06

This book made me want to revisit Charleston again. I loved the stories (I have not read this author's gardening book) and the recipes sound not only delicious but easy to make as well.

Oh to grow up in a time where there are servants everywhere and the family stays close together. It made me yearn for a time that is no more.

4 out of 5 stars A delightful book to dip into, and a great gift!.......1998-12-07

I enjoyed "visiting with" Mrs. Whaley again, although perhaps not as much as in her gardening book. When reading, you feel as if you are sitting in front of her, engaged in listening to stories about Charleston, her past, and her family, and about making guests feel at home. I don't think the recipes will take the world by storm--most are variations on old favorites. But you pick up tidbits about entertaining and the relaxed southern style. This book and/or her gardening book would make wonderful gifts, and would be perfect to tuck into a gift basket along with some other items. It is the kind of book you want to pick up when you've had a hard day or have a rainy afternoon to enjoy!

          5 out of 5 stars A classic.......1996-12-31

"Complete Introduction to Parrots" is an abridged version of the classic "Parrots and Parrot-like Birds", by the 12th Duke of Bedford. He was an English lord, and perhaps the most prominent bird breeder in the early 20th century. His books were the state of the art in technical content in their day, although they do not reflect the immense advances in aviculture since then. However, he had an incredible flair for writting amusing anecdotes about the misadventures of his parrots (including truly rare species, like Lear's macaw), which he let fly free in the English countryside. This is why his books continue to be published, long after the other aviculture books of his day have fallen by the wayside, and why they shall continue to be 50 years from now, when the books that are state of the art today have become obsolete and fallen by the wayside.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Good Guide .......2007-03-04

This is a good supplement, especially when working with children and adolescents. It works well with younger children, and can be adapted for adolescents. It gives the child a different way to learn and communicate the changes they are experiencing, and as a therapist I've been able to build on that to better assist my clients. I have several of the Heegaard books and i've found all of them useful in that way.
