Book Description
Confederate corporal Augustus Pitt Adamson of Jonesboro, GA enlisted in Company E, 30th Georgia Volunteer Infantry in 1861, steadfastly serving his country until the spring of 1865. Over 80 letters, carefully edited with commentary, reveal a keen insight into the military, political and social scenes of a war-torn nation struggling to achieve its independence.
A.P. Adamson writes of his participation in the actions at the siege of Savannah, campaigning in the Carolinas and Florida, the abortive Vicksburg relief expedition and the battle of Jackson, the gallant charge of the 30th on the first day of the Battle of Chickamauga, where he was wounded while serving in the color guard, and the 1864 North Georgia campaign at Dalton, Rocky Face Ridge, and Resaca, until his capture at Calhoun in May.
He then describes his experiences in a journal written during his incarceration at the "Andersonville of the North," Rock Island POW Camp, Illinois. The abiding faith and ardent patriotism of Adamson are constant themes throughout this book.

Disappointing.......2001-11-10
The editors have tried to add value to this rather unexciting collection of letters and brief diary by interspersing their own comments among the letters. This is all very well when they stick to facts, but too often they inflict their own 20th-century political beliefs upon the readers. That's particularly annoying considering the lip service paid to "objectivity" in the foreword.
The letters themselves are not exactly thrilling. The soldier in question saw little action and his letters (typically of Civil War letters) concern themselves mostly with relatives he's met and what he wants to have sent from home. His prison diary is interesting mostly in that its tone differs markedly from that of the letters; it's emotional and romantic, whereas the letters are downright dull. Still, the diary offers little factual information -- though he does undermine his editors' hoopla by stating that he was actually treated reasonably well. Whether he was "unreconstructed", as the editors claim, is unknown, because no post-war writings of his own are included.
I'd skip this. The editing is annoying and the primary material adds nothing new or entertaining to the wealth of Civil War primary sources already in print.
A revealing look into the life of a Southern private soldier.......1998-08-24
Sojourns of a Patriot is a compelling read. It esentially follows the life a Confederate infantryman, Corporal A.P. Adamson, throughout his tenure of the War Between the States. The book is composed primarily of his letters home and a journal he kept for the last year of the war. Secondarily, the editors provide comment and explanation to some of the entries. Most revealing were the roles that camp gossip played in his thoughts on the morale of the Southern troops. Also quite interesting were the false or incomplete pieces of "news" that reached Southern camps. This aspect of the book provides the reader with an insight that is often not present in regimental or campaign histories. Often, readers know the outcome of the battle, the makeup of the casualty list, or the result of a particular election. The letters in this book permit the reader an escape from that biased knowledge and to live through the life of the writer. The love of the writer for his home, his yearning for a return to his previous life, and his concern for the future are poignantly brought to the fore through his letters to various family members. However, some of the best writing is not included in these letters, but is in his later journal. These entries are poetry disguised as prose. The images brought forth by his writings are disturbing, comforting, melancholic, and often heart-wrenching. Brief though they are, they are some of the most powerful writings of the War this reader has encountered. The only detractor to the book is in the commentaries by the editors. They focussed a little more than was perhaps necessary on the personal histories of peripheral protagonists. Some of the information was repititious. However, in their defence, the editors do warn the reader of this in the beginning and they do have personal bias to this information. Additionally, the other commentaries they provide would be useful to readers who may not be as familiar with the conflict (in fact, these could have been expanded somewhat, but there is a conscious effort by the editors to provide suggested readings which are appropriate for each entry). Overall, I highly recommend this book to any person interested in the War Between the States. It will be especially appealling to readers with interest in the personal experiences of the war and an informative diversion to those readers who generally limit themselves to straight histories.
Book Description
This second of two volumes of Russell's letters covers most of Russell's adult life, the period during which he wrote over thirty books. Alongside Russell's Autobiography, these letters present the most accurate and fascinating account of his life yet published. They contain letters to some of the greatest figures of the twentieth century, including Ho Chi Minh, Lyndon Johnson, Tito, Jawaharlal Nehru and Jean-Paul Sartre, all but three which are previously unpublished.
Customer Reviews:
AN OUTSTANDING SELECTION.......2002-03-06
This book is recommended reading for anyone interested in a fresh approach to the workings of the mind one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century.
It is a selection of 338 letters written by Bertrand Russell between 1914 and 1970. Sifting though more than 40,000 letters is no simple feat. Fortunately the editor is Nicholas Griffin, director of the Bertrand Russel Research Center at McMaster University in Ontario. As editor of Russell's "Collected Papers", he is in an enviable position to provide us with the juiciest tidbits of Russell's dry humour, as well as a portrait of a passionate man.
The editor commentaries to the letters are useful in order to better understand and put in perspective some events and people mentioned by this very extraordinary thinker. One that you have to know well, if you are to understand how could he write in 1967
that "a great deal of work has come upon me, neglect of which might jeopardise the continuation of the human being......" Kudos to the editor.

Guerilla Learning How to Give Your Kids a Real Education With or Without School.......2007-04-29
As a certified teacher and a Homeschool mom I found this book to be a great work cumlinating many important aspects of Education in general. Many of the suggestions offered to Homeschoolers in the book are attainable and filled with basic common sense. The basic premis of the book is Learning happens naturally every minute of every day (Life is one big school) we as parents and eductors need to remind ourselves and others of this basic fact. For anyone interetsed in the foundations and history of American Education I suggest John Gatto's Book The Underground History of American Education. Knowledge Protects
Expected More But Not Disappointed.......2006-03-04
Like someone else said, I read this because we homeschool. I had heard what a great book this was but when I got it I was honestly a little disappointed. I'm sure if my kids were still in public school it would have been more useful but it just wasn't any help to us as homeschoolers/unschoolers.
I'd still recommend it to people who are disenchanted with the public school system but I know now not to recommend it so much to my fellow homeschoolers.
Guerrilla Learning: How to give your kids a real education with or without school........2005-09-06
I am new to the homeschool idea, and my daugther is 15 and hates high school. I found so many useful ideas in this book that I recommend it to anyone considering homeschooling and obtaining a better education for their kids in general.
Beautifully written ... for anyone with kids.......2002-06-22
"This book helped me relax and do less about my kid--less worrying, less trying to cram information into him when he wasn't responding as I wanted him to. Using the approaches recommended by Llewellyn and Silver, I now have fun observing my little boy, guiding him gently, and enjoying his forays into the world as he explores and learns on his own."
Something Amiss in the Classroom?.......2002-06-16
For most of us who grew up inside a public educational institution, it is difficult to imagine alternatives. Indeed, it may difficult to imagine anything at all. After twelve (in my case 19) years of absract inundation, most of us have lost the trees in a forest of abstractions. We inhabit a vacuous matrix of unispired, cynical defeatism, where teachers can't level with us as human beings and test questions bear no resemblance to reality. Until graduation day, that is. Then the world opens up before us, free for the plunder of active, self-interested engagement. What if we had never left that world from start? What if from birth to grave our lives were naturally interesting and piquant? What if we didn't educate ourselves for the test, but instead focused on the context of our life and followed our natural curiosities? Einstein (a college drop-out) certainly thought this was the right approach to education: "It is in fact nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet strangle the holy curiosity of inquiry." This book a refreshing, imaginative, and likewise extremely practical guide to context-driven education. All my life I had been vexed with the notion that contemporary education is utterly wrongheaded and thwarting, but until now I had never had the language or facts to back up my intuitive, gut feeling. Whether you are thinking of making the great experimental leap and homeschooling your kids, or whether you simply want to better understand how to get the most out of your local educational institution, this book is essential. Although you cannot relive the wasted years, it will send you in the right direction for future learning, and help you give your children an education that will truly unlock their deepest potential. Isn't that what education is supposed to be about: unlocking our native potential and stimulating genuine growth? With this book the relationship between information and the world becomes transparent again, as it should have been from the very beginning.

EXTREMELY WELL RECEIVED.......2005-11-16
Got this for my Dad after a new diabetes diagnosis and he has literally devoured the information and recipes in here. It gave him hope he could eat food that tasted good and still met his cravings and needs. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
FANTASTIC!!.......2001-02-21
I just received this book and have already tried 10 of the recipes..all were wonderful! Having recently been diagnosed with diabetes, I was looking for recipes that not only I would like but those that would also please my "steak and potatoes please" husband. This was the book! All those yummy comfort foods you thought you'd have to give up are here and now healthy!
WONDERFUL Basic Cookbook the Whole Family Will Love!.......2000-07-19
If you're looking for "Chicken Florentine with Julienne Carrots on a Bed of Couscous," then this may not be the cookbook for you. However, if you are after a wonderful, basic cookbook that provides lots of familiar recipes that your kids and husband will enjoy, and won't take your forever to prepare, then look no further.
My kids (3,7,9) and husband have enjoyed the dishes I have made, and I'm not feeling like I can't eat the things I am used to and like; mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, broccoli and rice, and lasagna, to name just a few. And because diabetic exchange and nutrition information is provided for each recipe, sticking with my food plan isn't a problem.
I also really appreciate the fact that the author gave me information on several products that she has found that help to keep the dishes tasting "normal" in spite of the fact that they're low-fat. She provides information on where to get these items if they're not available at your local store.
The section with baked goods has recipes that sound wonderful, but they call for Nutra-Sweet, which I am NOT very keen on. I do wish it gave the amount of sugar you could use as an alternate. All other parts of the cookbook I am very happy with.
I'm so glad a found this cookbook and I would absolutely recommend it!
GREAT FOOD AND HEALTHY TOO!.......1999-12-20
Since I was just recently diagnosed with diabetes, I was searching for a book that would allow me to eat healthy and also satisfy 3 growing boys. This book is it! Not only are the recipes easy to make, but my kids love them! They beg for me to make the recipes we have tried! I find it wonderful that the recipes call for oridinary items you would have on hand. No ingredients that you have to search the world over for! You will love this book!
This book is totally comprehensive and easy to read.......1998-11-05
My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes, and I purchased this book along with several others on the subject of diabetes. By far this is now my "bible" for cooking for us. Although I do not have diabetes, this book is a healthy way for anyone to eat, without feeling "deprived" of certain foods. Everything I have made so far has been a huge hit! I am now purchasing it for my mother in law.

Doris Cross Does It Again!!!.......2000-08-27
Hats off to Doris Cross! She's produced yet another spectacular cookbook! The recipes in this book are absolutely delicious, easy to prepare, and don't require bizarre ingredients. The taste is sensational; you think you're eating high-fat dishes when you aren't! The dishes are simple enough for everyday fare, yet elegant enough for a dinner party. Of the many cookbooks I've purchased since being diagnosed with diabetes, the ones by Doris Cross are far and away my favorites!!
Mama mia, is this good food!.......2000-04-29
Since I love Italian food and also need to eat in a balanced manner, I was delighted when I saw this cookbook in the library. It was everything I expected and more! The diabetic exchanges are clearly listed as well as the exact grams of carbo, protein, fat, sodium, and cholestrol. I tried two of the recipes, Garlic and Parmesan Chicken with Pasta, and Shrimp and Crab Stuffed Shells. The recipes were easy to follow and the taste was magnificent! I was amazed at the rich flavor and beauty of the dishes. I think this book would be helpful for anyone who follows the Zone Diet as well as diabetics.

Finally! Food with Southwest Flair for Diabetics—and Their Families!
Dear Friends,
After being diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago, I decided to follow up my bestselling book Fat Free and Ultra Lowfat Recipes by writing a cookbook of tasty dishes for diabetics. There was such a terrific response from folks around the country to Real Food for People with Diabetes that I decided it was time we had our own cookbook of America's favorite ethnic food, Mexican and Southwestern cooking. As a diabetic, I still want all the old favorites and comfort foods I grew up with instead of the boring and bland choices normally available. And when it comes to Mexican food, I love the spicy flavors and zest of the real thing. So, as I've done before, I developed recipes for authentic-tasting dishes that are lowfat and low-calorie—delicious and healthful.
Now, you too can savor enchiladas, tamales, and burritos filled with cheese, sour cream, refried beans, and chunky salsa and still maintain a safe, healthy, diabetic diet. Each quick, hassle-free recipe includes a nutritional breakdown and lists the diabetic exchanges to take the work out of cooking for a diabetic lifestyle.
To your good health and enjoyment,
Doris

"Creatures" a Creative and Colorful Effort.......2001-11-07
Ms. Kopp finds something to love about all her subjects, from the "loveable beast" of a black bear to the "hairy, scary and misunderstood" taratula. With her wit and way with words she brings New Mexico's wild inhabitants to life. When and if we do encounter any of them, we'll be ready with increased understanding and appreciation. I'm looking forward to reading this book to my grandsons.
Book Description
Students, hobbyists, and others just getting started in metalworking have turned to this informative, easy-access reference time and time again. Without getting bogged down in confusing details, it teaches them what they need to know about the most effective techniques for working with gold, platinum, copper, brass, steel, plaster, and more. In fact, it covers most of the same subjects as the professional version, only in a simpler fashion: metals, tools, surfaces, shaping, joining, casting, stones, and mechanisms. And, like the larger edition, it has a spiral spine and attractive color images throughout. Newcomers to the field will especially appreciate the safety tips and the many charts covering melting points, conversion, factors, and other fundamental knowledge.

Helped me a lot........2007-04-07
Book covers all the basics and more. I learned a lot from it and use it as a base for many different types of jewelry that I make. It's well written and can be used by beginners and the more experienced metalsmiths.
The total student guide.......2007-02-22
A tremendous book that covers all of the basics. If you are considering taking a class on metalsmithing, you should consider this book. It is an inexpensive foundation book that covers all of the basics and gives you good information on almost everything. Some of the more advanced details are not covered, but it has so much basic information that can be forgotten.
The Complete Metalsmith.......2007-01-24
I borrowed this book several times from our local library and finally decided to see if a copy was still avaviable to buy. Its full of very useful information that Ive seldom if ever seen elsewhere. A great book for a hobby metal worker OR professional. Tims explanations on how to carry out various operations and processes are consise and easy to follow. Im REALLY enjoying owning this reference work.
A must for amateur or professional metalworkers jewellers or anyone who likes to "potter " in the shed .
He's the Master.......2006-07-20
Tim McCreight writes a book that is useful for beginners as well as more advanced students of metalsmithing. The information is presented in a manner that is easy to understand. Once you have mastered the technique the book is a wonderful reference tool. This is a must have for your metalsmithing library.
The one book for any art metal/jewelry artist.......2006-03-29
This edition or any of the other versions of this book is a must have. I have seen this book in one edition or another sold in the more different locations with only one thing in common. That is METAL you can use it no matter what you are doing if its with metal you can use this book. I have a large number of books in my collection and find that I use this one to answer questions and get quick info. I would suggest that you get the pro edition at some point as it comes with a disk with some small programs for a PDA and books on the computer only. I own it in three different editions.

Book Description
Worried your teenage son is the only boy on the block with a room so messy it’s spilling into the hallway? Happened to find your son sneaking out the window in the middle of the night? Ever tried to sit down and “talk” to your teenager, just like the experts say you should, only to get an eye roll and a snide comment from him on his way out the door? If any of this sounds familiar, this book is for you.
In Oh Boy! more than thirty real moms share true stories about how they’ve handled their sons’ adventures and misadventures. The minidramas recounted run the gamut of teen boy behavior, from body odor, prank calls, and bad grades to drinking and sex. The stories, each prefaced with a brief, insightful introduction from mother of two Maryann Bucknum Brinley, prove that—as you may have suspected, but don’t mind hearing again—no mom handles things wonderfully every time. Yet even a seemingly disastrous experience can grow into a fond memory that just might generate laughter in years to come.
Like words from a good friend and stories with happy endings, Oh Boy! will help you sleep better at night and remind you that your son will grow up, one of these days.
“Parenting a boy is a lot like raising an alien. I’m not from Venus, but when he was a teenager, my son might as well have been a Martian. I love having a book like this to help me go where no other writer/mother has dared to go before.” —Linda Lee Small, coauthor, You Know He's a Keeper . . . You Know He's a Loser . . .
