Isaiah Berlin was deeply admired during his life, but his full contribution was perhaps underestimated because of his preference for the long essay form. The efforts of Henry Hardy to edit Berlin's work and reintroduce it to a broad, eager readership have gone far to remedy this. Now, Princeton is pleased to return to print, under one cover, Berlin's essays on Vico, Hamann, and Herder. These essays on three relatively uncelebrated thinkers are not marginal ruminations, but rather among Berlin's most important studies in the history of ideas. They are integral to his central project: the critical recovery of the ideas of the Counter-Enlightenment and the explanation of its appeal and consequences--both positive and (often) tragic.

Giambattista Vico was the anachronistic and impoverished Neapolitan philosopher sometimes credited with founding the human sciences. He opposed Enlightenment methods as cold and fallacious. J. G. Hamann was a pious, cranky dilettante in a peripheral German city. But he was brilliant enough to gain the audience of Kant, Goethe, and Moses Mendelssohn. In Hamann's chaotic and long-ignored writings, Berlin finds the first strong attack on Enlightenment rationalism and a wholly original source of the coming swell of romanticism. Johann Gottfried Herder, the progenitor of populism and European nationalism, rejected universalism and rationalism but championed cultural pluralism.

Individually, these fascinating intellectual biographies reveal Berlin's own great intelligence, learning, and generosity, as well as the passionate genius of his subjects. Together, they constitute an arresting interpretation of romanticism's precursors. In Hamann's railings and the more considered writings of Vico and Herder, Berlin finds critics of the Enlightenment worthy of our careful attention. But he identifies much that is misguided in their rejection of universal values, rationalism, and science. With his customary emphasis on the frightening power of ideas, Berlin traces much of the next centuries' irrationalism and suffering to the historicism and particularism they advocated. What Berlin has to say about these long-dead thinkers--in appreciation and dissent--is remarkably timely in a day when Enlightenment beliefs are being challenged not just by academics but by politicians and by powerful nationalist and fundamentalist movements.

The study of J. G. Hamann was originally published under the title The Magus of the North: J. G. Hamann and the Origins of Modern Irrationalism. The essays on Vico and Herder were originally published as Vico and Herder: Two Studies in the History of Ideas. Both are out of print.

Following that dictum, I might point out that, especially in two areas of contemporary concern, Hamann's thought is highly relevant: Oswald Bayer has shown in Autoritaet und Kritik (1991) that Hamann's hermeneutics -- antedating by two centuries Derrida's reflections on intertextuality -- provides the basis for a devastating critique of deconstruction by subverting the French thinker's concept of the "center," and demonstrating where the true center ("Mitte") is to be located. Further, there is presently a lively discussion among scholars of Hamann's critique of Kant's famous essay: "What is Enlightenment"? Berlin's present study would have done more justice to Hamann's thought by discussing such developments as these and others, which were available during his lifetime.

My review is limited to the study of Johann Georg Hamann in the present volume, and the three star rating applies to it alone. Combining Isaiah Berlin's books on Vico, Hamann and Herder under one cover was a felicitous idea of Berlin's editor and literary executor Henry Hardy. The position which these thinkers share: their anti-Cartesianism, their emphasis on history, tradition, language and mythology may now be seen through the considerably different lenses they employ. I feel compelled, however, to register a caveat. When the present Hamann study appeared in book form in 1993, I expressed my reservations about it in a letter to the "New York Review of Books," to which Berlin replied. I lamented the fact that he had ignored modern Hamann scholarship, and had clung to the interpretation of Hamann as an irrationalist, especially that espoused by Rudolf Unger in his 1911 book,"Hamann und die Aufklaerung,"ignoring modern discussions of the "dialectic of the Enlightenment." Specialists in the field now consider Unger's interpretation outdated, and see Hamann as a champion of one side of the Enlightenment, albeit a severe critic of its other, extremely rationalistic, side.

The question of Hamann's relation to the Enlightenment turns on the conception of reason. I have maintained that Hamann employed a mode of reason distinct from that of the rationalistic Enlighteners as well as from that of his friendly adversary,Kant. In order to designate that mode, I adopted a term once used by Kant in referring to Hamann's thought,i.e., "intuitive reason," or, in the original German, "anschauende Vernunft." I accepted the term as an apt one for Hamann's mode of thought, however Kant felt about it. Further, I have demonstrated how it can be linguistically distinguished from the traditional logico-mathematical mode of thought in my book "The Quarrel of Reason with Itself"(1988),and elsewhere. It is one which Berlin rightly sees as akin to Dilthey's "verstehen," which Berlin also rejects. He lists a group of philosophers whose conception of reason matches his own: Jeremy Bentham, J.S. Mill, Franz von Brentano, William James, Bertrand Russell and the "Vienna Circle." Most of these thinkers are about as far removed from any kind of "verstehen" as possible. Who then, besides Hamann, may be said to have employed what I have called "intuitive reason"? The prime examples are the great epistemological heirs of Hamann: Goethe and Nietzsche. Goethe belongs here because of his refusal to analyze the "Urphaenomen." Hence, his anti-Newtonian stance. Nietzsche, especially in "Zarathustra," which I have analyzed closely from the standpoint of intuitive reason in "Nietzsche and the Judaeo-Christian Tradition"(1985).

Having stated my reservations concerning Berlin's interpretation of Hamann, I must say, however, that we can be grateful that he has helped mightily to rescue that German philosopher from the obscurity to which he has been unjustly relegated by those who remain under the spell of the strictly rationalistic wing of the Enlightenment. Berlin, in spite of his basic lack of empathy with Hamann, not only recognized his importance, but was always fascinated by him. He was an early and enthusiastic subscriber to "The Hamann News-Letter," which I edited and published in the early 195O's and 196O's. Further, his correspondence with me regarding Hamann over a period of three and a half decades shows an unflagging interest in the man who both attracted and repelled him. In a letter to me of June 25,1972, he wrote: "My passion for Hamann is undiminished." Not too surprisingly, there are certain passages in the present book in which Berlin seems, unwittingly, to move toward a certain degree of empathy,hence to a kind of "verstehen." But such passages are few, and many others are unjustly harsh. Nevertheless, for all its shortcomings, Berlin's study of Hamann is valuable for introducing the reader, especially the anglophone reader, to the historically important pre-Romantic figure, known as "The Magus of the North," without whom the development of German Romanticism would be unthinkable, and whose insights increasingly bear fruit today, especially in theology and philosophy. As Berlin has said: "Hamann repays study."

Excellent Guide.......2007-09-15

I bought this book as a gift for my sister who is expecting a baby anyday now. I used the older version of this book to teach our nephew how to swim. We started when he was only 4 months old and did the things in the book in addition to a local swimming class focused on water enjoyment. If I could do anything differently I would have started even younger! He loves the water, and sometimes cries when we leave the pool. The book provides a lot of information to assure parents and caregivers that swimming is a safe and natural activity for babies. Not only is the step by step instruction and reassurance easy to follow, the photos cannot be beat! My sister is looking forward to using the book with her new baby, particularly because she knows about the positive experience I had with our nephew. I recommend this book to any parent or caregiver that wants to be actively involved in introducing their child to the water and swimming!

Wonderful book!.......2006-02-20

Don't let the size of this book fool you! I wasn't sure what book to buy to learn about teaching my baby to swim, but I'm so glad I picked this one. The photos are absolutely beautiful and the book is quality enough to place on a coffee table. I was greatly inspired. The exercises are simple and clearly explained. I was able to remember many of them after only skimming it when I took my baby to the pool for the first time - which, thanks to this book, went much better than I expected. My five month old took to the water very well. The author also clearly stated many safety issues to be aware of - for which I was very thankful.

This is a great book. I highly recommend it. ...even if you only buy it for the pictures!

Excellent How-To Book.......2005-08-18

This book is conversational yet concise, and packed with important information for how to safely swim with your baby from newborn into toddlerhood. The many photo illustrations are detailed, clear and beautiful. The author answers important frequently asked questions about water safety and learning to swim. After reading this book and viewing the images, I feel confident taking my 4-month-old into the water for his first swim, and being able to expand his lessons if he likes it.

Solid reference - good pics.......2006-02-13

Up through page 60 this is an excellent survey book for "Port 101." The pictures throughout are very good and backed up by a well-printed and solidly bound book. The Port Directory which consumes the last two-thirds of the book is informative up to a point. Unfortunately, and, I suppose, by necessity, the selection of specific ports reviewed is limited and, more importantly, now dated since the book came out in 1999. Finally, it dismisses Australian ports. I personally think this is a shame as the quality of ports coming out of Victoria and South Australia are getting progressively better and offer excellent value.

A delightful read, beautifully laid out as well. An excellent first book on port, though long-time devotees doubtless consult it regularly too. I suppose it could have been a smidge longer, as Spence obviously draws on a storehouse of port knowledge, but that's a small criticism and the volume is well worth its price.

I've read the german translation of this port companion. It is very helpful and well written. Very good pictures of Quintas and bottles make it a joyful read. The author gives details for wines and vintages on most quintas. Maybe he could have given more comments on vintages on some quintas, esp. the high rated ones.

Need to brush up on your port?.......1998-10-18

I'm relatively new to the joys of port wine, so when I saw this book I bought it immediately. I have not been disappointed. The helpful history, geography, tasting sections are relatively brief but interesting, and the review section is stellar. If you want to become an informed port consumer, buy this book!

Great Easy Designs.......2007-01-05

This book is great not only for experienced crocheter but also for the beginner who has basic skills and wants to make a stylish but simple sweater. The designs are simple and basic (but attractive), so if you're looking for something very challenging you might be disappointed. I am a crocheter with mid-level experience and I plan to make most of the designs in the book. Nice color photos. Recommended for your home stitching library.

There is nothing in this book I would take the time to crochet. The sweaters are sloppy looking and amaturish.

I do think that the instructions were a little lacking but overall the book is filled with great sweaters and great ideas for just about everyone.

The Editor Chimes In.......2005-08-05

I'm so pleased to learn that most people have enjoyed this book. And I'm especially pleased that people like the tips, yarn substitution information, and basic-how-tos. When I was developing Crocheted Sweaters, I sat down and made a list of everything that I would like to know when making a sweater. Then I figured out how to get it into this book.

The one thing that I'd do differently (and have done in subsequent books) is include large, close-up photos of the stitching in the finished sweaters. (In fact, More Crocheted Aran Sweaters, which I developed and edited, has full-page, detailed photos of the sweaters, plus model shots!

But back to Crocheted Sweaters. At a trade show a couple of years ago, a yarn shop owner told me that she buys the book for the comprehensive instructions for the basics of crochet, rather than the sweaters. That makes me really happy because I want more people to discover the pleasure of crocheting.

When the book was in development, I spoke with all of the yarn manufacturers to confirm that the featured yarns wouldn't be discontinued any time soon. I chose more interesting yarns because, at that time, I thought that some crocheters were stuck in a rut, using boring yarns.

Unfortunately many yarns are discontinued. I love the challenge of swapping yarns but understand that not everyone shares my enthusiasm for the hunt. Hence the extensive information about each featured yarn. The gauge is found with the featured sweater, all of the other details are in the section near the back of the book.

Crocheted Sweaters also gave me the opportunity to create extremely detailed stitching instructions. I had been doing this for sewing books for some time, and wanted crochet instructions that are just as clear and helpful.

I struggled with insomnia for more than 10 years. I rarely got more than 3-4 hours sleep per night. I had tried all the suggested remedies -- yoga, sleeping pills (Ambien), mild anti-depressants, etc... Nothing helped. Then I decided that enough was enough. I made sure there were no physical causes for my insomnia (such as sleep apnea) and then I got to work. I found Dr. Jacobs' book at my local library. The idea of a drug-free program appealed to me. Yes, some of his ideas may sound simple but simple has worked for me. I'm not saying I sleep eight hours a night every night but my sleep has definitely improved. I feel human again! If you are ready for help and are willing to follow the book's advice, you will see improvement. If you are like most people who want a magic pill for insomnia -- you won't find it here. Once you are ready to put in some effort, give the book a try. Attitude is everything!

The book does contain some helpful (and drug free) ideas to help with insomnia. It is a quick read but is very wordy. I think the book could have written in half as many pages.

Drug-free help .......2007-07-07

In a society where drugs are often prescribed as a first step toward treatment for pretty much every ailment, this six-week therapy program aims to give the sufferer help without the use of drugs, thereby avoiding the possible side effects and dependency that drugs sometimes cause. A long-time insomnia sufferer myself, this unfortunately was the very last thing that was recommended to me after a year of doctor's visits, a very unpleasant polysomnogram, and various drug prescriptions that I reacted badly to. Having taken biofeedback therapy many years ago for migraine relief, I had already been introduced to the potential for the power of the mind over the body, and this therapy program incorporates that, and other self-help methods, to alleviate insomnia. And as a current user of this program, I can say it works. An open mind is required to make this work; skepticism and negativity will surely cause it to fail. I recommend this highly to anyone who suffers from insomnia. And as an added bonus, this program was much more affordable than even ONE of the many prescriptions I had tried. If it doesn't work for you, you have only lost a few dollars. If it does, it was priceless.

Great insights and very well written. Also, for those of you in search of an effective sleep aid, I found and bought a pretty cool system on Ebay called the `Sleep Wizard'...it's a white noise program but way batter and more varied than others I have tried before, cost me $10 and I would have spent several times that price. Everyone can benefit.......2007-05-04

Everyone sleeps and so everyone can benefit enormously from this book. It describes various processes that take place in our bodies and gives a large amount of suggestions for improving ourselves in various aspects of our bodies and minds. The book explains things both scientifically and simply, so it can be appreciated by people of all levels.

If one wanted to follow the method, there are several forms and charts to fill out in order to keep up easily. I didn't do this, I just picked up on all the little tips throughout and I think the book definitely helped me learn to deal with stress and sleep better.

thorough documentation of a life's work.......1999-10-28

I am biased, because Charles Baillairge', the subject is my great-grandfather; however, he is truly a fascinating man. The book focuses on his life's work of engineering and architecture, and is well researched. The book contains several illustrations. Recommended reading for those interesed in these fields, or for those interested in the history of quebec city.
