Book Description
This autobiography of a prominent Soviet Air Force pilot--and son of longtime Politburo member Anastas Mikoyan--provides extraordinary insight into the political and social life of the leadership of the USSR from the days of Stalin to the breakup of the communist regime. It is the story of a man dedicated to flying, first in defense of the Soviet Union in World War II, and later testing a new generation of Russian jet fighters during the Korean and Vietnam wars and throughout the Cold War period.
Mikoyan's flying career began in 1941 when, after graduating from the Kacha Military Aviation Fighter-Pilot School, he joined the 11th Fighter Regiment in the defense of Moscow and Stalingrad. After World War II he studied at the Military Aviation Engineering Academy and became a test-pilot at the Research Flight-Test Institute of the Soviet Air Force. He tested such early jet fighters as the MiG 15 and 17, analyzing their combat worthiness in comparison to the West's Sabre and other new designs. Beginning in 1959 he headed the fighter testing division of the Institute and in 1965 he became the Institute's second-in-command.
Mikoyan writes about many of the 102 types of fighter, bomber, and other aircraft he flew--including those of his uncle Artem Mikoyan--during his long career. As a key figure in the rapid development of aircraft and equipment for the Soviet Air Force, he can offer valuable personal commentary on both the people and machines involved in a period previously shrouded in secrecy. Twenty-four pages of photographs accompany this self study of a man who influenced a critical period in aviation history.

A GREAT TEST PILOT, SCHOLAR & GENTLEMAN.......1999-11-28
The basic facts about General Mikoyan's life are already recorded in this review section: I will therefore concentrate on other aspects of this very remarkable and admirable book. Curiously, the first word about it that comes to my mind is: refinement. This is the work not only of a high ranking officer but of someone who is clearly a scholar and a gentleman(while he wrote many papers on flight stability and a thesis on problems of flight at high angles of attack, it is not surprising to learn that he is a lover of music, theater and poetry). Miraculously he has been able to interweave convincingly two rather distinct subjects of concern. First, his inevitable, if necessarily tangential, part in, and views (in a myriad details) of, the Soviet polity from Stalin to Gorbachev. Second: his long and complex life as a fighter pilot in WW2 and a test pilot and commander of Soviet aviation at the Research and Flight Test Institute of Chkalovskaya and Ahktubinsk from the war's end to the space age. I am not expert enough in either subject to tell how much is totally new here but I am certain that General Mikoyan's comments as the son of a major Soviet & Armenian leader will hold an aviation expert's interest while the author's dedication to clarifying the nature of flight in general, flight psychology and test flying in particular within Russian contexts stands an excellent chance of entrancing Sovietologists! (#)That a man so close to battle in all its aspects can give such an unwarlike impression without for one moment making one forget the astounding degree of danger characteristic of his career is due no doubt to the author's iron sense of discipline, to an extreme modesty (delightfully, he thanks the reader at the end for getting through his long book) and what I would call a generous and, yes, diplomatic objectivity characteristic of all his observations. His criticism of many things in aviation as in politics is there but never ponderous. His disappointments (in the matter of fighter pilot achievement in WW2 or in that of awards - modified eventually by the gold star of Hero of the Soviet Union) are recorded but never dwelt on. His relations - to many young friends whose parents were purged; to a beloved and admired but clearly difficult father whose cause he warmly defends (I now certainly want to read Anastas Mikoyan's Memoirs); to various politicos of the era; to various colleagues in aviation design, procurement and testing; to the relative merits of Russian and "enemy" equipment (much here on "borrowing," copying and adaptation of the other side's achievements); above all to his fellow pilots, are sketched in with a light and deeply human touch. It seems very clear that, despite his family relation to his uncle Artem's firm, the Mikoyan Design Bureau, his professional judgements for the Air Force were as rigorously impartial as possible: we hear of the merits and demerits of planes from Polikarpov, MiG, Sukhoi, Yakovlev, Ilyushin, Tupolev - whose quality was to govern the fates of huge numbers of young people. But, always, it is to his good fortune as a flyer; his technical expertise as pilot, engineer and commander and his tenacious love of his chosen life that he returns. All of this against a background, revealed especially in the closing chapters, of the devastating losses suffered by this cadre of mostly young, underpaid (in relation to civilian test pilots),hardworking and dedicated experts. Mikoyan's detailed analysis of Yuri Gagarin's fatal crash is one of a great many. (#)The translation, by the author's daughter Aschen, is extraordinarily readable: one forgets completely that this is not written in English: an astonishing achievement given the amount of technical information to be imparted. For correction in future editions, however, one minuscule exception proving the rule: "Bourges" airport throughout should surely have been "le Bourget"? (#)Hard to know if General Mikoyan will write more - I would hope so. It would be most interesting to read him in detail about post-Perestroika Russia and the relative values of Soviet and post-Soviet times. We are becoming fortunate: after the work of Wagner, von Hardesty, Gunston and Duffy amongst others, we are getting closer to the practical feel of Soviet aviation history, especially during the "Great Patriotic War." Joining, for example, Igor Kaberov's "Swastika in the Gunsight,"Anne Noggle's "A Dance with Death:Soviet Airwomen of WW2" and L.L.Kerber's "Stalin's Aviation Gulag: Tupolev & the Purge Era," Stepan Mikoyan's book puts us brilliantly and exhilaratingly into the catbird's seat on what should, alas, never have been an "other side."

A Mind at Work.......2002-09-15
Stanley L. Jaki is one of the most important writers on the relationship between religion and science. Prof. Jaki has written over 40 books. His work concerns the philosophy of science, the relationship between science and theology, theology proper, the history of astronomy and physics, and some other issues as well. Perhaps because of his writing style - which is at times polemical and at other times obscure - he doesn't receive the attention he deserves.
By way of background, although Fr. Jaki is a conservative Catholic theologian and has, for example, written books defending the papacy, he is no "fundamentalist." While he rejects Darwinism, he also rejects any attempt to find "concordance" between Genesis and natural science. He also considers Genesis 1 to be post-exilic and the product of multiple authors, which will hardly endear him to conservative Protestants, who might otherwise sympathize with much of his work.
This work is an enjoyable discussion of Prof. Jaki's career and the circumstances that surrounded the writing of his numerous books. It's enjoyable to read about the trials and travails of someone attempting to get his books into print, the reception of these works, and the effort that it takes to produce them. Some of the stories are quite amusing, such as the reception that Prof. Jaki has received from Moslems and Creationists (I think he is somewhat unfair to the latter.)
The big problem with this book is that Prof. Jaki obviously isn't happy that his work hasn't received the attention that it deserves. Unfortunately, he treats the readers to (at times) gratuitous speculations about why this is the case. I'm sure we would all like to "settle scores" but this detracts from this otherwise enjoyable work.
Book Description
It's a world we barely see, but it is teeming with life. In the dust of a typical house, carpet beetles, mites, silverfish, and other creatures live and die, producing new generations every few months. Mold, bacteria, and yeast lurk undetected in heating and cooling systems. Debris dispersed into the air from these organisms can cause runny noses, itchy eyes, coughing, headaches, and breathing difficulties. Some people, especially those made highly sensitive by allergies, suffer from devastating health problems and the worry that, as one such sufferer lamented, "My house is killing me!"
Scrutinizing house dust and air samples with a microscope, indoor air quality expert Jeffrey C. May has spent his career helping people identify what's causing their chronic health problems. In My House Is Killing Me! he draws on the dramatic personal stories of his clients' suffering and relief to help readers understand the links between environmental factors and problems like allergies and asthma. Explaining how air conditioning, finished basements, and other home features affect air quality, he offers a step-by-step approach to identifying, controlling, and often eliminating the sources of indoor pollutants and allergens. If we could see this contamination, May observes, the air would look as murky as stagnant water, and we would know not to breathe it.
Reading My House Is Killing Me! lets you see your house the way an expert would. Just as he looks at spaces and systems during an indoor air quality investigation, May focuses first on the areas of daily life (bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen), then looks into attics and basements (including heating and air conditioning), and finally moves outside to the garage and the exterior of a home. Along with offering a wealth of practical advice and proven solutions for various problems, he includes a glossary of terms and a list of valuable resources.

Worked for my family.......2007-01-10
My daughters have a range of chronic respiratory issues to simple allergies. This book helped me realize what I can do for them and it has made a difference. The main point is to find the source of the allergen before purchasing solutions. We thought our air purifier and humidifier were great machines to help with cleansing and adding moisture to the indoor air. Boy, were we wrong. We may have actually been spewing out mold particles and distributing dust mite fecal material into the air. The first part of the book was hard to read because it shows the common causes of allergies - dust mites and other little creatures that may be in your pillow at this moment. The book made suggestions from simple to the complex. Some of our changes were simple like using a wet mop on our floors, adding dust-mite-proof pillow cases, and running stuffed animals through the dryer. Fortunately, we didn't have to go to the extreme to get some relief and my daughters are coughing and sneezing much, much less. This book gives you some tools to help you become an indoor air detective in your home or at least, where to begin to get help.
Wonderful resource for some allergies -- but not others.......2005-11-11
"My House Is Killing Me!" is a wonderful book with lots of great information for people who are allergic to mold, mildew, and dust mites.
Contrary to the broadly worded title, this book contains relatively little information for people who are allergic to tree pollen, grass pollen, weed pollen, pet dander, and chemicals (i.e., chemical sensitivity). Unfortunately, I'm allergic to everthing on the second list and nothing on the first list. So, most of this book wasn't very helpful for me.
However, if dust mites, mold, or mildew trigger your allergies, you will find this book quite helpful. Each chapter addresses one room and ends with a list summarizing what you can do to improve that room. The book contains numerous stories about houses triggered allergies of these sorts, why, and what can be done about it -- the presentation of these stories was too mellodramatic for my tastes, but the advice appears to be sound and well considered.
excellent book.......2005-09-24
Jeffrey May is a clear, concise communicator. He offers specific, helpful information. Easy to read and useful.
Good book, but magnesium supplementation also helps.......2005-05-27
This book is helpful in that the factors discussed in it can contribute to, and exacerbate, allergies and asthma. But there is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma and allergies is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma and/or allergies who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with these ailments under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma or allergies please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve these ailments. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective form.
WOW !!! .......2004-11-20
If you own a house or plan to buy one in the future then this book is a MUST read. The author takes you through a list of things to watch out for, room by room, section by section.
Is it possible to find the perfect home? Perhaps not, but the author takes you through a list of common sense steps you can take to improve living arrangements for you and your family, especially if there is a family history of asthma or allergies.
If you buy this book, be warned, it is hard to put down. The author does an excellent job of providing details when needed, but keeps the story line moving and interesting.

Book Description
Diabetes has hit epidemic levels, affecting up to 17 million Americans. Even children and adolescents are developing type 2 diabetes, once considered an illness that occurred in adults. Despite these statistics, people with diabetes can control their illness, thanks to innovations in insulins, insulin pens and pumps, and nutrition. Better Homes and Gardens Carb Counter's Diabetic Cookbook can be a key tool in managing diabetes and improving quality of life. The book features the most current meal-planning strategy recognized by the American Diabetes Association: counting carbohydrates. Simply put, carbohydrate is the nutrient that has the greatest effect on blood glucose levels, and eating about the same amount of carbohydrate at the same times each day keeps these levels in range. More than 220 mouthwatering healthful recipes, a week's sample menus, and portion control tips make carb counting easy and enjoyable. Complete nutrition information accompanies each recipe. This cookbook also contains information about prediabetes risk factors, ways to prevent the illness, plus a wealth of resources.

Very good book.......2007-01-31
This book goes to the heart of diabetes carbohydrates and their metabolisim and why you have to count carbs. This book helps to explain diabetic equivalents and their relationship to carbs. It also has very good recipies.
Not for Type 1.......2003-01-31
I purchased this book for my wife who is Type 1 and wants to count carbs. This book is for those who are Type 2 and states several pages into the book that it is not for Type 1. No where in the advertised description of the book is that very necessary information given. I will be returing the book, how disappointing.

This is a super set to learn from and refer back to! If you're a beginner - check it out! There's so much to learn from it!
must have for any lamp worker.......2005-08-04
this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny.
The best book in its class.......2003-12-30
If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there.
It's Just OKAY!.......2003-12-24
To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). Has popular appeal void of substance.
absolutely amazing.......2003-01-20
It should get more stars than five, the history of lampworking portion of the book is almost worth the price of the book itself. The history portion is only a small portion of the set. I have been doing lampworking for about 3 years now and I search the internet for anything reguarding lampworking often and this book set has tons of stuff I have never seen. excellent.

Back in Shape - A Back Owner's Manual.......2001-05-14
This is an exellent guide for dealing with back pain or back damage. The book clearly explains how the back and spine work (easy to understand)and gives excellent information with respect to what goes wrong and how. Although written by doctors, the book is focused on the fact that most back pain can be overcome by excercise. It discusses other options in detail, and is clear when excercise may not be the right (or only) course of action. I highly recommend the book, I have owned it since published (1991, it is now 2001) and refer to it quite often.

First-rate biography of Labour's forgotten leader.......2001-08-30
Hugh Gaitskell was leader of the British Labour Party from 1955 till his tragic premature death in 1963. That period, in which Labour was continuously in opposition, was marked by internal strife between Right and Left within Labour's ranks, on such issues as nuclear disarmament, with Gaitskell representing the pro-Nato, Atlanticist wing of British social democracy.
Brivati's book is a model biography: balanced, historically-informed, and original. It portrays Gaitskell as a politician of immovable convictions about the proper end-state of a good society, and fewer fixed ideas about the means to achieve them. Most important, it relates Gaitskell's ideas to the changes in western society that have taken place since his death, and tries to assess his historical significance. And it compares him with his obvious successor, Tony Blair, who succeeded where Gaitskell failed in getting Labour to jettison its historic commitment to public ownership. Brivati sympathetically portrays Gaitskell's revisionism, which was 30 years ahead of its time; his irrevocable commitment to the values of western liberal democracy, an instinct that led to his courageous and historically vindicated stand opposing unilateral nuclear disarmament; and his insights into the political implications of what was then known as the Common Market. But Brivati also makes a telling point that Gaitskell's belief in equality and indicative planning has been rendered largely irrelevant by modern economic developments. There are still aspects of Gaitskell's political judgement that are timeless strengths and that stand out from this book. Brivati comments, "Gaitskell's revisionism offered a process of asking of each institution and relationship in our society: What is it for? Who [sic] does it benefit? Should it be changed?" That process of interrogation is an essential one for a healthy democracy, even if Gaitskell's criteria for answering those questions have been superseded by events. Moreover, Gaitskell, so far from his image of a dry technocrat, was a man of passion combined with a critical intellect. Though the collectivist ideology that informed his egalitarian principles has now (as Brivati again rightly comments) slipped into history, the wish for a more tolerant and gentle society has not. To that extent, Brivati's book is an inspiring as well as a scholarly and informative read.
A balanced and thoughtful reappraisal.......1998-06-30
Hugh Gaitskell is largely a forgotten presence in the Labour Party of today but as Brian Brivati (intentionally or otherwise) manages to convey to the reader, this neglect may have something to do with the fact that this former British Labour Party leader had a style and a substance that has rarely been seen since. Although clearly not as sympathetic towards his subject as Gaitskell's earlier biographer, Philip Williams, he still leaves us with an impression of a man who was much misunderstood and maligned by many at the time in his own party.
Hugh Gaitskell was a passionate orator who for much of his life, struggled with the twin impulses to on the one side conceal that passion in favour of reason and sense, and on the other, to realize that that same passion could be useful as a political weapon to disarm his opponents not just in his own party but also beyond in the Conservative and Liberal parties of his day. For much of his short political life, Brivati contends that when the former wasn't predominating, the latter could appear to disastrous party political consequences. The dispute over 'specs and false teeth' around the time of Gaitskell's one and only budget points to the stubbornness of a futile passion for the Atlanticist policies of the post war Attlee Government over what could have been a more reasonable accommodation with Nye Bevan as the Minister for Health and powerful ex-officio leader of the Left. Gaitskell then went on to foolishly support the expulsion of Nye Bevan for his controversial attempts to foist a left wing direction on the opposition when Labour left office in 1951. Brivati shows us that the always deeply complex and fascinating Gaitskell was at his most ineffective when his drive for what was `reasonable' could become a `passion' not justifiable by the facts that at other times he could be equally passionate to elicit both from himself and others.
However, another more effective and controlled passion dominates his years as leader of the Labour Party afte! r 1955. See in particular, Brivati's account of the 1956 Suez crisis, the defense debates/ of 1960-61 and the famous Common Market speech of 1962. These controversies contain some of Gaitskell's finest and most brilliant speeches, and with the proper access to the video and sound recordings, this would be self-evident to anyone who listened.
Brian Brivati has written a biography from the perspective of someone who likes distance from his subject - he wasn't born until two years after Gaitskell died. The ultimate achievement of this biography is that it is finely balanced between the 'hero' of Philip Williams'' richly documented 1978 biography, and the villain of Michael Foot's biography of his 'hero' Nye Bevan. Unlike Brivati, both Williams and Foot had the fortune or misfortune to have known Gaitskell personally. Where these two had been inspired to write dramatically diverse but equally passionate accounts, Brivati 's sense of balance leads him to weave a careful line in and around the two sides to Gaitskell's reputation - both then and subsequently. He therefore succeeds in dropping by at both camps. Unfortunately. this approach is likely to be infuriating to the supporters of both left and right for its seeming willingness to play the part of appreciative guest at both houses and to then show that what was offered was far from being the poisoned chalice that each side would like to claim of the other. As an admirer of Gaitskell to the point where I once lobbied hard to meet his first major biographer, Philip Williams, I have to admit to sharing in that infuriation whilst also rejoicing that by the end, the side Brivati chooses to leave us with, veers more conclusively towards the 'hero'. In the final analysis, it is his interpretation of the depressing years for the Labour Party subsequent to Gaitskell's death in 1963 which become their own justification for why it is still hard for some people to move beyond their fascination with Gaitskell's style, democratic socialist beliefs and rare ! sense of integrity. Brian Brivati is no less caught and trapped than Philip Williams and Michael Foot once were.....
