Book Description

“A great read [that] has frozen the events in print that molded great men who stood alone on the mainland of Asia against the first Asian Communist Army to engage the West.”
–From the Foreword by Brig. Gen. Robert L. Scott, Jr., USAF (Ret.), author of God Is My Co-Pilot

The rapid-fire success of the North Korean Army’s (NKA) invasion of South Korea, launched on June 25, 1950, and supported by Russia’s vaunted T-34 tanks, stunned the world. By August 1, the entire South had fallen, save for the port city of Pusan.

As the enemy prepared to deliver the coup de grâce, only one obstacle remained: Lt. Addison Terry’s unit, the famous Wolfhounds of the 27th Regimental Combat Team. Used as a “fire brigade” to shore up imperiled American defenses, these intrepid soldiers were in the thick of it, stopping the NKA’s threat of a breakthrough at every turn. Against all odds, the Wolfhounds stood firm, racking up two Presidential Unit Citations within weeks. Terry’s account, written while recovering from injuries he suffered during the battle, captures the war in all its grit, sacrifice, and courage.

“A fascinating first-person account of the early days of the Korean War.”

5 out of 5 stars The Battle for Pusan.......2003-05-24

Major Terry's personal account of his experience in the Korean "Police Action" put color into the black and white images
many "baby-boomers" have of this war. His descriptive prose (written in the vernacular of the 50's) provides the reader with a visceral feeling of the pain and simple pleasures experienced by combat troops. This book is user-friendly with it's explanation, use and application of military jargon for readers who did not serve in the armed forces.

5 out of 5 stars A concise, moving story..........2000-12-29

...that will, hopefully, serve to remind us of the committed men and women who fought and died during that awful "forgotten war" on that dirty little peninsula 50 years ago. As the child of a "Pusan Commando," I have often wondered about the war that my father was so reluctant to speak of. Mr. Terry vividly illustrates that war, and wastes no time writing eulogies or second-guessing the policies of the time. He tells of the events, and little more, in a concise manner reminiscent of Hemingway, with a down-home ease and matter-of-fact manner that is sure to drawn in the reader. This book is for the Korean War what THE LONGEST DAY was for WWII. A must read for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars What if we didn't fly in Army troops and Pusan fell?.......2000-08-12

This first-hand account begs the ultimate question facing us today:

What if we hadn't flown in the so-called "unprepared and un-equipped Army troops from Japan to hold the Pusan perimeter? What if the ports were mined, our ships blocked by fast patrol boats and thousands of miles away? What if we had waited for ships to arrive?

The answer is the North Koreans would have over-ran the South and the U.S. would have accepted this as fait accompli. Look what we did when the Chinese Communists ran the Nationalist Chinese off to the island of Taiwan a few years earlier in 1949.

Today, this is why we have a U.S. Army 2d Infantry Division and an 8th Army Headquarters on the ground in Korea today--so America is not interdicted and forced to "cut and run" either strategically or on the battlefield where BOTH Soldiers and marines oriented to fighting a linear war had to retreat or else be encircled and annihilated by superior numbers of enemy swarming across rugged mountain/hill terrain. Today, we will stand at fight, just like the gallant men of the first Korean War did. South Korea would have been lost to Communism had it not been for U.S. Army Soldiers like Addison Terry "going as is when he was called". It was men like him who then held the Pusan perimeter for weeks so we could assemble the ships together to do General MacArthur's Inchon maneuver warfare masterpiece, cutting off the enemy deep in their own rear and retaking he capital of Seoul. However, we will not have weeks and months again in the future to do this amphibious stunt again.

The lesson of this book is that we have to have AIR-delivered U.S. Army forces ready NOW to fly to the aid of U.S. Army and AF forces already on the ground "holding the perimeter"--let's not lose sight of the fact that these kinds of forces saved the day in Korea long ago, as unready as would have like them to be in favor of allegedly better forces that cannot get there at all or in time in a world that moves by the speed of the air where surface ship wakes are seen from space and targeted by mines, missiles, patrol boats and modern diesel-electric "ultra stealthy" submarines.

The nemy thought in 1950, that he could "smash and grab" South Korea before we could get men on the ground to stop him. Men like Addison Terry proved them wrong.

5 out of 5 stars 27th RCT in the trenches: Taegu to Chipyong Ni.......2000-07-28

TERRY'S BOOK IS SO good I'm at a loss to give it all the praise it deserves in the framework of a brief review. He has an engaging style of writing--cuddle up with this book in an easy chair. The description of the battles is crisp; of the lulls, languid. His honesty is touching and much like Tom Sawyer ("I cried a little bit when I covered up his face") he doesn't smother you with descriptions of casualties. You respect Terry's dignity (and that of the wounded or dying) for this brevity. He only asks that you never forget. On those few occasions where he is tempted to write a bit of an epitaph ("Able had lost a good platoon leader, I had lost....") his words get in the way.

Everybody loves Terry for his stories of battles and combat. Why? Again, he lets the story tell the story. The effect is fantastic. If you are wondering why everything suddenly falls apart at Sachon Pass [earlier that morning his men were "red hot-- an untouchable force"], well you can keep wondering because Terry doesn't know, either. As you get the sense the whole situation is slipping out of control with an NKPA roadblock behind them and the flanks crackling with encircling fire, you get just as angry as the author does when he finds an artillery battery that doesn't even have a defensive perimeter in place.

So the whole book goes. The fog of war becomes fog in the text. The words become Terry's eyes and ears, through which the soul of the drama enters the soul of the reader.

The truth is the only way we can learn from the mistakes made in the Korean War. His Haman chapter handles the issue of the 24th ID's dereliction of duty with honesty and candidness. His disgust of 'civilian bureaucrats' in Washington is justified and palpable. I might point out the swollen military brass in Japan prior to the Korean War were just as pathetic. Some things will never change.

Overall the book is an excellent read. Korean War buff's might want to brush up on Norman Allen's ITEM company saga in Knox's book PUSAN TO CHOSIN. Both Allen and Terry were near Taegu when the NKPA pushed hard in mid August. Both love artillery ("100 yards left! Drop 200! Battery 3 rounds HE, 3 rounds WP, fire for effect.") and probably would have a great tablepounding evening if they could get together and share memories.

5 out of 5 stars WWII looks at Korea.......2000-07-28

Addiston Terry served with the 27th Infantry in the Korean conflict. I served in the 27th Infantry in World War II. The knowledge that we were both "Wolfhounds" led me to read the book despite the fact that my previous experiences with war reminisces even by other "Wolfhounds" had been disappointments. I was happy to find that Terry had done a great job of reporting the essencs of war. His reports of a group of poorly trained, poorly equiped and under strength Companies and Batallions is brutaly true and should be (although history says it won't) a lesson to every American Citizen that maintaining strong military ground force is a must. Terry depliction of military life with its hours of boredum and moments of sheer terror, as well as the continuning hunger and always present need for sleep are excelent. I would recomend this book to every veteran and in particula to other Wolfhounds regardless of the war in which they served.

4 out of 5 stars Not complete, but still useful.......2004-03-21

Contrary to the impression its packaging may give, this book doesn't present anything like a complete guide to developing communication skills for children with autism. Instead, what it describes is one technique to build simple interactive games to help begin communication with children with limited language.

However, this can be valuable for many children, and the book is clear and helpfully illustrated with photo examples of real-life games. So I'd recommend it on that basis.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Wine Lover's Guide.......2006-02-04

I love this wine guide! It is clear, informative, and---best of all---fun to read. The writers of the guide (Evan Spingarn and Fred DuBose) have none of the snobbery or condescension common in the wine-tasting world. The writing style is engaging and clever, with a subtle sense of humor. The emphasis on pairing wines with food is another special attraction of this guide. Each wine descriptions gives suggestions of foods to serve with the wine, and the index of Wines for Food in the back of the book is a handy reference for planning dinner parties or casual dinners at home. Being a novice with wines, I found the descriptions of wines both clear and enticing. I recommend this book highly to those both experienced and new to the wine world.

5 out of 5 stars Serious about food and wine.......2006-02-03

If you love to eat and drink in style, then this book is for you. Refreshingly straight-forward and unpretentious, "The Ultimate Wine Lover's Guide" not only covers the spectrum of fine wines, but tells you how to pair them with what you're cooking tonight. A great value!

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps the only wine book 95% of us will ever need........2006-01-25

I know one of the authors personally (the one who's actually TASTED thousands and thousands of wines over years of retail buying experience) and I wouldn't be writing this if I didn't want to, so listen up...

Evan Spingarn's "Wine Lover's Guide" is one of just a handful of wine books you'll likely ever need or want. Why? Because, for beginners, it lovingly provides a sound foundation on which to build a lifelong love affair with wine, and yet for enthusiasts, there's enough refinement, detail, and real wine-wisdom for the book to serve as a reference.

There are texts, there are tomes, and numerous wine books containing mountains of detailed information, but all this won't necessarily increase your enjoyment of wine and may, in fact, make you a real pain-in-the-ass to be around. Evan's book avoids this common trap, cleverly distilling years of professional tasting experience into a witty, populist, text that takes you by the hand and walks you through the true essentials of the wine world, all the while serving up tasting notes on over 1000 fascinating pours (for all budgets) that have actually passed the author's lips.

Sure, wine geeks will go on to consume libraries but most of us can stop right about here, toast the author's help and guidance, and avoid turning the joy of wine into yet another chore.

Faced with hundreds of bottles that start to look the same, it's no wonder we so often walk out of the wine shop with a bag of not quite what we had a taste for (but the salesman said is a nice oaky Chardonnay that goes with everything). Fred DuBose and Evan Spingarn pilot us through the fog with hundreds of specific suggestions and, more importantly, descriptions of each variety of grape so we will never end up on the rocks again.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life.......2006-01-17

This book kicks the snobbish, uppity arse of all those despicable high falutin' wine guides. I'm not impressed by fancy adjectives and food pairings with foods I can neither pronounce nor afford. This great book simplifies and demystifies the entire wine experience. I no longer break into a clammy sweat when the fancy waiter brings the wine list. I can now navigate my local wine store with bravado. Bottoms up!

I have a copy of this edition and a copy of the old (1999) edition. I prefer the old edition to this one because of the binding type. The old version has a spiral binding and this one has a regular book binding. It is harder to add pictures without the book becoming thicker on one side than the other.

Other than the binding, I love this book. It is a great place to put the pictures of my cat to remember her.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Better Albums Out There.......2003-08-29

"Nine Lives" is a photo album for cats. The pages feature different themes (for instance, "Cant' Catch Me", "Mother Nature", and "The Discriminating Palate"), each with corresponding graphics (e.g., the "'Fraidy Cat!" section has pictures of cats with their fur on end). Each page is covered with graphics and a colorful background; while this makes the album attractive to look at, it also leaves a little less room for pictures. My solution was to place photos over the graphics that I wasn't too fond of.

The album is meant mostly for photos; there are very few places that are designated specifically for writing - though I suppose you could still write on them if you'd prefer. None of the pages are lined for script.

The pages are sturdy and durable. The book is spiral-bound, which makes it easier to attach photos to the pages (i.e., you don't have a crease where pages are bound together at the spine). However, the wire spiral is designed so that some of the back pages come undone if you're not careful. I've tried to tighten the spirals, to no avail.

"Nine Lives" is about as big as a medium-sized book; the largest photos it will fit are approximately 5.5"x8.5". It has a hard cover that wraps around the spiral binding so that it isn't visible.

I've found that the best way to stick photos to the pages are by using mounting stickers on the backs of the photos along with one-sided corners for reinforcement.

I've bought a number of companion animal albums, and "Nine Lives" is by far the best I've found as of yet, despite its flaws. The canine version is "Dog Days: A Scrapbook for My Best Friend", by Kate Madsen.

                  Book Description

The three books in Julie Parker's Fabric Reference Series explain the different fabrics made from silk, cotton and wool, using plain English instead of technical jargon. A detailed description of each fabric is illustrated with a real cloth example, right there on the same page, which clarifies in the simplest way what a silk shantung, cotton seersucker or boiled wool actually looks and feels like.

All About Silk is the first volume in the series. A brief introduction covers the history of silk, the main sources of silk and the silk textile industry, followed by descriptions and samples of 32 silk fabrics, in alphabetical order: batiste de soie, broadcloth, brocade, charmeuse, chiffon, China silk, cloque, crepe, crepe de Chine, douppioni, four-ply silk, gabardine, georgette, habutai, jacquard, knit, matelasse, matka, noil, organza, peau de soie, pongee, printed silk, sandwashed silk, shantung, suiting, surah, taffeta, Thai silk, tussah silk, tweed, velvet.

All About Silk is packed with information about the different weaves, yarns and finishes used to make silk fabrics. Terms such as cultivated silk, wild silk, raw silk and spun silk are clearly explained. The author uses simple drawings, an easy-to-read, consistent format and clear uncomplicated language.

Other books in the series include All About Cotton, with 40 cotton samples, and All About Wool, with 35 wool samples.

                      Book Description

Before The Red Tent won her international literary acclaim, Anita Diamant was a columnist in Boston. Over the course of twenty years, she wrote essays that reflected the shape and evoution of her life, as well as the trends of her generation. Now, Pitching My Tent collects the finest columns of a writer who is a reporter by training and a storyteller by heart, all revised and enriched with new material. Personal, inspiring, and often funny, Pitching My Tent displays the warmth, humor, and wisdom that Diamant's legions of fans have come to cherish.

Following the enormous success of her two bestselling novels, The Red Tent and Good Harbor, award-winning author Anita Diamant delivers a book of intimate reflections on the milestones, revelations, and balancing acts of life as a wife, mother, friend, and member of a religious community. Before The Red Tent, before Good Harbor, before and during six books on contemporary Jewish life, Anita Diamant was a columnist. Over the course of two decades, she wrote essays about friendship and family, work and religion, ultimately creating something of a public diary reflecting the shape and evolution of her life -- as well as the trends of her generation. Pitching My Tent collects the finest of these essays, all freshly revised, updated, and enriched with new material, forming a cohesive and compelling narrative. Organized into six parts, the shape of the book reflects the general shape of adult life, chronicling its emotional and practical milestones. There are sections on marriage and the nature of family ("Love, Marriage, Baby Carriage"); on the ties that bind mother and child ("My One and Only"); on the demands and rewards of friendship ("The Good Ship"); on the challenges of balancing Jewish and secular calendars ("Time Wise"); on midlife ("In the Middle"); and on what it means to embrace Judaism in today's culture ("Home for the Soul").

5 out of 5 stars Delightful - Learned more about Judaism than I have ever known before..........2006-01-01

I picked up this collection of essays after reading "The Red Tent" which absolutely adored.

Half-way through the book I thought, "Converting to Judaism might be a good idea!" I don't mean to jest about a serious subject...and it is Diamont's friendly, heartful, down to Earth tone (and the fact that she shares her being vis a vis her judaism)that makes me want to adopt some of her ways.

I zipped through this book in record time, and I know I will read and re-read and give copies to many friends.

2 out of 5 stars Almost not worth reading.......2004-02-13

Coming off the total fabrication of the 'Red Tent' this collection of essays is simply a dirty mirror of the far more organized book they were made into. Capitlizing on interest in feminism and the Bible these essays serve up a cold plat eof fabrication and misinformation, mostly detailing the life of Dinah and her relations with other women of the tribe of Joseph, unfortunatly Dinah comes off as a harlot, and her friends as Pagans and idolworshipers full of a mishmash of psuedo-pagan religions, none of which actually existed at the time of Jacob but this book simply fakes these other religions pretending that the women in the Red Tent would have resorted to heathen barbarism when not in the presence of Jacob and his sons. The reality is that no acts of human sacrifice or the bleeding of cats took place among the women of Jacobs family and since none took place this read is mere conjecture.

As a long time fan of Anita Diamant's work - THE RED TENT and then GOOD HARBOR, I was thrilled to see that a new one from Ms. Diamant was on the shelves! I bought it right away!
PITCHING MY TENT was a fast read but one that I can see revisiting from time to time. In this compilation of articles and musings, the reader will get a real sense of what it was like for a woman who had choices and took chances - while her faith in Judaism and living a Jewish life blossomed!
Written in such an honest and personal way, this book stirred many thoughts and emotions and really made me think about life.
This is a book to give to the women in your life, messages that we will all identify with. It may even enourage you to pick up a pen and jot down some of your own memories!

4 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book for Fans of Diamant.......2003-10-18

PITCHING MY TENT by Anita Diamant, author of THE RED TENT, is a collection of short and personal essays on family, friends and religion. Arranged by topic, the essays are, for the most part, light and enjoyable reading. Gathering many essays from her days as a columnist, PITCHING MY TENT reflects the things that are most important in the author's life, and they are things that will resonate with many readers.

Diamant begins by exploring "Love, Marriage, Baby Carriage." In this section she shares personal and general thoughts on marriage and partnership. These thoughts, like those in the rest of the collection, in many ways center not just on marriage, but on a life lived within a particular religious tradition. She shares how she and her husband celebrate Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath, and his conversion to Judaism. While this section of the book is actually dedicated to her husband, she does discuss her first marriage in frank emotional terms. From pet peeves to health issues, from mutual friends to the birth of their child, Diamant is candid about her marriage; the specifics she shares point to universals.

Next, Diamant dives into the topic of motherhood and her focus is on her daughter Emilia. She writes loving essays about parenthood as both "an adventure and an education." Two essays in this section stand out. The first is entitled "One" and discusses Diamant and her husband's decision to have only one child, despite the pressure to give Emilia siblings. The other is "The Mother's Bat Mitzvah Speech." This speech is a touching and tender tribute to her daughter on a very special occasion.

The third section in PITCHING MY TENT gathers essays about friends and friendship. These are short yet sweet.

"Time Zones" is the fourth section and one of the most interesting topics of the book. Here, Diamant examines sacred time and ordinary time by looking at the Jewish year and some of its holidays and commemorations. In essays about Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, the holidays of Sukkot, Chanukah and Purim, as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas, Diamant writes about being Jewish in a culture both Christian and secular and how she celebrates and understands Jewish (and non-Jewish) holidays. The essays are quite short but are full of insight and honesty. As a daughter of Holocaust survivors, she writes about Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, and the idea of memory as a sacred trust. Both this essay and the brief one in tribute to her father are poignant and nicely written.

Diamant also has collected essays on middle age but she ends the book with more discussion about religion in her life. She writes that Judaism is her "journey" and her "home" and that it is an "essential lens" through which she understands herself and her place in the world. But these final essays are not as solemn as the introduction to the section would have you believe. Here, Diamant addresses serious issues such as congregation politics and the expectancy that all Jews read Hebrew --- but she does so with a light and witty touch.

PITCHING MY TENT is not exactly a book about religion or family in general but about Diamant's family and her religious life. Her essays are insightful if not challenging or academic. This collection is a great gift idea for fans of Diamant, those who enjoy easy yet interesting reading, and especially for Jewish mothers. A personal look at contemporary Jewish life, PITCHING MY TENT will not generate controversy or create the kind of following that THE RED TENT had, but it won't disappoint those who are looking to learn more about this author.

For more than 20 years, Jean-Paul Viguier has been one of the few French architects to work extensively beyond the boundaries of Europe. Besides numerous buildings in France, he has realized projects in Asia and in the United States. Viguier is particularly interested in the urban perspective and has been involved in a number of town development projects. In Bandar Nusajaya, close to Malaysia's border with Singapore, he was responsible for designing an entirely new town for 650 000 inhabitants. This volume covers the last ten years of Viguier's work, documenting sixteen buildings and projects. Some of the most notable are the André Citroën Park in Paris, the French Pavilion at Expo 92 in Seville, the Franco-Chinese Center at Tong Ji University in Shanghai, and the Sofitel Hotel in Chicago. Philip Jodidio has been editor in chief of the French arts journal Connaissance des Arts, based in Paris and is a highly respected author on contemporary architecture.
