Soothing, loving.......2007-07-23

I love this book. I'm reading it slowly to not miss a word. Of the DE books I read this is the first one I feel is non-judgemental, and so very reasonable.
I got it from the library (cautious by the reviews I read here) and am going to buy it just to keep it.
Reading this book is easing a lot of the stress I'm going through on this path. Once issues are named and identified they lose their ability to subliminally torment you. The book is respectful enough to leave it to the reader to look at things her/his own way, after helping in laying out the issues.
This book is written by a psychoanalyst and will be most enjoyed by people familiar with psychoanalysis.

I'm not sure what the ambivalence, and negative reaction, of the previous reviewers was based on. Or what the more recent reviewer was actually looking for that didn't get resolved. I find this a very insightful book that presses parents and others to investigate the emotional issues they're likely to encounter over time as the parent of a donor-conceived child. Especially the very real emotional issues of a couple in which one might consider the other more "his" or "hers" based on biological ties; cultural beliefs that many of us grow up with that need to be addressed with donor-assisted conception. Certainly to think that these issues won't come up, or are better left undiscussed, does a disservice to the child and the couple (or single parent, which is discussed as well).

I agree that it's a wide-ranging book, which might seem a bit daunting at times, particularly for those looking for practical solutions rather than discussion. But since most clinics don't discuss many of these mental health concerns with clients, I think this is a highly valuable book that prospective parents can read in the privacy of their bedroom as they contemplate and consider the choices ahead.

As author of "Choosing Single Motherhood," I know many women make conscious choices about becoming a parent. I think the kind of issues raised in Ehrensaft's book are honest, real and important for anyone to keep in mind when pursuing parenthood in non-traditional ways.

No help at all.......2006-08-29

This book does not seek to answer any questions because as far as the author is concerned she has all of the answers. Her agenda quickly becomes clear in the first chapter, and while she is entitled to her opinion, she should not misrepresent it as unbiased source of information. Additionally, I have never found a piece of writing more insensitive and plainly cruel to those of us who are reproductively challenged. Consequently, not only did the book not answer any of my questions or address my doubts, far from helping reach a resolution, it only kicked me while I was already down. I don't recommend this title to anyone facing fertility issues.

Nothing that great. The writing is very inclusive of EVERY situation, so it's gets a little confusing. You have to kind of pick through the stuff that applies to your situation...But when you do find the stuff that applies to you, it's pretty good stuff.

Love it love it love it, Not for everyone........2004-10-25

I absolutly love to cook, have been to culinary school, also not afraid of new things. I have tried most of these recipies and many have become regulars. The smoked salmon terrine although is expensive we normally make on every holiday now. Sugarcane Baked Ham with Spiced Apples and Pears is super. Beef Tenderloin with Fresh Horseradish and Black Pepper Crust was suprizing ly good, I ont like horseradish at all, but it was paired so beautifully in this recipie it was sublime. Jiffy Pop Firecracker Shrimp we make everytime we have shrimp in the house. the Chocolate Chocolate Pudding Cake with Chocolate Ganache, Creole Christmas Trifle, Creole Christmas Fruitcake with Whiskey Sauce and the Banana Cream Pie with Caramel Drizzle and Chocolate Sauces is to die for, however this recipie is written with the assumption you have made custards b4 and know you need to temper it beford adding the hot milk mixture. I have not made the Lobster Cheesecake with Christmas Caviar Sauce but hope to soon. the big boy cookies and the spiced pecans...Ummm yummy, I am soo happy to have bought this book. If you are open to try new things, If you like to occasionally like to indulge and eat like something so decatend and pretend that it is a common thing, this book is definatly for you. Emmeril, you are my hero.

Not for the faint of heart--but worth it!.......2004-04-04

If you're only familiar with Emeril from his TV appearances, this book may surprise you. It lacks the flamboyance and loud flashiness, replacing them with a certain elegance and gourmet style. It includes a Christmas Eve dinner for ten, Emeril's Christmas Day brunch buffet, New Orleans New Year's Eve dinner, a New Year's Day supper family style, the Chef's holiday favorites, and Emeril's "stocking stuffers."

The book is filled with gorgeous photographs of lavish decorations and settings. They artfully set the mood in this book--one of no expense spared in the interest of fabulous holiday memories. Each section of the book is done as a menu, so that you can make the menu whole or steal individual recipes. None of these menus are quick things, and this book isn't designed for the cook who doesn't like to spend more than a half-hour in the kitchen. Shopping lists are included, as well as wine pairings.

This is not the cookbook for someone on a budget: it calls for such expensive ingredients as caviar, truffles, and huge amounts of fresh raspberries, some of which can be tough to find depending on where you live. The book also assumes at least a little experience with basic cooking techniques--novices shouldn't be starting with a gourmet cookbook using expensive ingredients. Not all of the recipes cost so much, however, and they aren't all complicated; for example, the spiced pecans are extremely inexpensive and easy, and they're so good that we've made them more than 15 times at least (and we don't often repeat recipes). They're so good, in fact, that people request them specially when they come to visit at holidays.

So try the salad of new potatoes and roasted walnuts with warm bacon vinaigrette, or the truffle risotto with parmesan croutons. Make the andouille cheese bread or the white cheddar truffle eggs. Save this book for an occasion when you really want to pull out all the stops, whether it's Christmas or some other important time in your life. The photos alone will inspire you to do great things in the kitchen!

I bought this cookbook for my sister, who is a big Emeril fan! I was a little worried after reading the reviews and as soon as the book came in, went through it to check it out.
My mom and I both went through the book and cooked 2 Christmas dinners out of it! Yes, before I gave it to my sister. She was bummed that we hadn't gotten it for her. I wrapped it up and gave it to her used and I'm buying my mother her own copy as well. The food and stories were fantastic!!! and BAMBAMBAM!!!!! on the poinsietta cocktail, I highly recommend it for your next Christmas gathering!!!! loved it!!

Very disappointed with the book.......2002-11-02

I was overjoyed with the delivery of the book. I purchased it used, at a fantastic price. There the joy ended. The recipes are ones that only a person looking for the completely abnormal meal would like this book. Only the section of Gifts to Make was worth reading. The recipes called for ingredients that are difficult to obtain and mostly of unusual taste. Would have cried if I had paid full price.

Having received this as a gift, I must confess that I have never cooked from it, but have perused it many a time.

Included our recipes for a Christmas Eve Dinner for ten, Christmas Day Brunch, New Year's Eve Dinner, along with stuffing suggested gifts, mail order sources, shopping lists, and wonderful writing about the holidays and wine suggestions.

On the "want-to-try" list are: Sugarcane Ham with Spiced Apples and Pears, Creole Christmas Fruitcake with WHiskey Sauce, Jiffy Pop Firecracker Shrimp, Crab Bisque with Crab Boulettes.

Delightful book with great writing and photos and organization.

This journal is very detailed and has squares EVERYWHERE for you to place pictures of your pet. It would be great to accompany a new cat or kitten given as a gift, as it balances important information with places for you to fill in all the funny ways cats bring joy into your life. What's w/the Cat Training Advice?!.......2003-08-29

"My Cat's Tale" is largely a journal for your feline, with room for a few photos as well. It has lined pages on which you can record your cat's milestones, such as "Memorable Firsts" and "Favorite Memories".

I would have given "My Cat's Tale" 5 stars - except that the book's author sprinkled little "pointers" throughout the journal. Some pages are completely filled with advice so that they're essentially wasted - my solution was to affix large photos onto these pages and cover up the text completely. Ms. Glantz seems to be confused as to what a "journal" is - it IS a place for the individual to compose personalized entries. It ISN'T a training book. If I had wanted "tips", I would have bought a book on animal training.

Otherwise, "My Cat's Tale" is one of the better companion animal journals I've found. It has cute, appealing sketches and a nice color palate. It isn't too "busy", but it's still attractive to look at. The pages are large enough for two standard-sized photos (there are about a dozen pages set aside for pictures, but I ended up putting many more in, over the author's text). It's probably most useful for someone who's just adopted a kitten, as some of the journal entries focus on kitten-specific milestones (e.g., kitty's first...). Many of the entries can be filled in at any stage in your cat's life, though.

The canine version of "My Cat's Tale" is "My Dog's Tale", also by Lorie Glantz. The format is identical.

"My Cat's Tale" is nice journal, but, sadly enough...it COULD have been a GREAT journal!

This book is excellent. I love the idea of keeping all of my cat's favorite moments in hands reach. I had so much fun filling out this book and I continue to add new things to it. I loved putting my cat's paw prints in it. Now I am buying one for my other kitten.

I loved this book. I'm still filling in different sections as 'Shmoo', my British Shorthair feline companion grows & has more 'tails' to tell. The journal is beautifully illustrated but difficult to stick photos in & it's a shame to have to write over the pictures. However, it's the best journal of its kind I could find.

This book is a good idea and has some nice design elements, but there isn't enough space to write the stories of my little feline. The pages are very busy even before I write.

I think that the reviews of this book are indicative of a typical problem of books of this type. The publishers take a book on a certain aspect of woodworking and pad it out with a lot of superfluous "basic woodworking" type filler, making it appear to the casual observer as if it is a detailed "how to" book. Buried within this padded and filled book is a good overview of English style gates and doors, with descriptions and general construction notes. So, if that is what you're looking for, you'll like the book. But you do need to have the required carpentry skills before you approach the text. As is so often the case in the woodworking press, the authors were undermined by the clueless publisher.

Not for do-it-yourself'ers.......2007-01-04

I bought this book because I need to make a new, exterior door for an old house in my hobby woodshop. Allthough the book has many drawings of more architectural nature, it doesn't really show the technical details for the guy that has to build the door, so to me the book was somewhat disappointing.

Don't Buy This Book.......2006-12-15

If you want to learn how to build doors, as the title suggests, do not buy this book. You will be sorely disappointed, and guaranteed that this book will not aid you in building a door. If on the other hand, you are simply looking for some black and white sketches of various types of doors, then this could be the book for you.

Terrific source for building doors........2005-09-30

I have been looking for a source for quite some time for directions for building "board and batten" doors and was glad to finally find this book. Not only did I find the particular door I was looking for but there were lots of illustrations for many different types of doors many of which are historical reproductions.

I highly recommend this book.

This book is not for the novice craftsman. I have some carpentry experience and I did not find it as useful as I had hoped. The lack of step by step methods for creating the door/gate designs was a negative for me. I also did not like the variety of door designs. However, I did find a couple of very interesting designs that I want to tackle as soon as I find a book that will give me sound guidance.

This sequel to Jerri Wolfe's I'm Two Years Old! follows in the same fashion, escaping the usual expert-talks-to-parent format by using short alphabetical sections that offer a "child's-eye-view" of the issues parents lose sleep worrying about. Babysitters, bad habits, bathroom language, bedtime battles--each topic is addressed as if your 3-year-old could talk like a grown-up about a little person's feelings. Although some section titles are the same in both books (including, predictably, both "Tantrums" and "Whining"), careful attention has been paid to ensure their age-appropriateness. The best feature of this book is that each subject is dealt with in essentially two parts: why the 3-year-old acts, thinks and behaves in a certain way, and what you--the parent or adult--can do to make things easier, more fun, less scary. The stylistic conceit wears a little thin if you attempt to read the entire book straight through, but, as a minireference that forces you to empathize with your child, this title does offer a perspective that's a useful change from the norm. Under "Sexual Curiosity," for example, you find, "It's not so easy understanding all this body stuff. I have lots of questions. Why do you act so quiet and funny when I ask about being a boy?" Good question. Here and elsewhere, there are constant gentle reminders of how to avoid making the process of growing up even more bewildering than it already is. --Richard Farr

A quick and easy read that does help parents to think of issues from their childs perspective.

A Must-Have for parents of 3-year olds.......2001-03-03

This book really gave me a new insight into my child's mind and heart. Each chapter is presented with a child describing a problem (such as Whining). The child-voice explains why a child would do this ("When I'm hungry and tired, whining just comes naturally to me"), and then goes on to give advice on how the parent should deal with it ("Hugging really helps when I'm tired, then I could do what you want me to do.") The chapters are short, none more than 3 pages long. It's a quick read, and well-organized so I can flip to just the right problem with the situation arises!

The best part is that it really works. Examples from this book have already made my time with my 3-year old more pleasant. Both my daughter and I are much happier and less frustrated with each other. I highly recommend this book!

Interesting reference book as told from a toddler's perspective. Areas of concern to parents are defined and addressed as a three year old seems them.

Definitely a book that makes you stop and think, as a parent, of how your child might be seeing how you and other adults act. (And how little sense we sometimes make.)

This compilation of essays writen about Georgia O'Keeffe is varied and thought provocing if you are allready somewhat educated in her history. It is not a good starter on this great artist. Many well-educated scholars contribute their take on the various subject matter that can be associated with O'Keeffe.

A pretty mundane, pretty much died in the wood I would guess romance.

New Orleans vampires in the past, and present, circle around each other, as does a cop and a rich girl. Not too many interesting elements to be found here, and it is laid on reasonably thickly.

Easily avoidable, as far as the whole paranormal thing goes it is pretty dull.

Cheesy, Overdramatic Vampire Romance.......2005-04-24

First in a series, BENEATH A BLOOD RED MOON by Shannon Drake is a paranormal romance that's a cross between vampire melodrama and a police murder-mystery. Spanning 200 years, it follows the lives of the mysterious Montgomery heiresses, rumored to be vampires, contrasted with the modern-day love affair between a cop named Sean and the latest Montgomery heiress, Maggie. Sean is also the lead cop on a series of gruesome murders committed by a serial killer imitating Jack the Ripper - and who somehow is connected to Maggie.

I didn't particularly care for the story ... and my list of complaints is long. The book is actually a quick read and keeps your attention, but I felt it was too melodramatic (and cheesy), especially the prologue. I also didn't like the author's writing style; she wasted a lot of time on unnecessary "fluff" details and dialogue, none of which pertained to the plot or romance. The plot line itself was interesting, but I was rolling my eyes way too often to enjoy it and had figured out the major secrets long before they were finally revealed. The happily-ever-after ending was also wrapped up too nicely, with no explanation as to how "the miracle" happened. All in all, it was an unsatisfying reading experience.

FYI: Erotica writer Angela Knight's THE FOREVER KISS or JANE'S WARLORD both handle these themes much better, the former being about vampires, the latter having a time-traveling Jack the Ripper.

When i first started reading this book,i had my doubts.It starts off kinda slow,but picks up after a few chapters.I plane to read more by Drake after reading this.

A Great Vampire Novel!!!!!.......2003-05-24

I must admit that I am new to the sub genre of the vampire romance novel. I love the concept but I have just not found many authors that have thrilled me. Ms. Drake has sold me totally on the idea of a sexy, sensual vampire. I automatically pick up Ms. Drake's historic romance books, now I will pick up her Vampire novels as well!

Maggie Montgomery is owns a clothing boutique in the heart of the French Quarter. This is a special store since it has been in her family for generations. There has been a horrid murder in the French Quarter and there are blood drops found outside her backdoor literally. This leads NOPD detective Sean Canady to her doorstep investigating to investigate this beauty in connection to the blood drops found outside. Maggie is stunned and agrees to help in any way possible. Sean is totally drawn to Maggie in a way that he can't understand and begins to pursue the reluctant lady despite the misgivings he has that she is holding something back.

Maggie has secrets that she is not willing to share, she is a vampire. Needless to say Maggie is away of a past that she and Sean (Sean is an old soul as well) share, as well as the return of an enemy that means to destroy all that she has managed to create. She finds herself drawn to Sean and eventually falls in love with him. She still feels bad about keeping a part of her past from the sexy Sean, and her past may have a connection to the murders that are now plaguing the French Quarter. She may know who is performing the frightening "Jack The Ripper" type murders but is unable to prevent them. See the murder may be another vampire. Eventually Maggie must confront not only her past, but love and trust Sean enough to tell him the truth about her in order to help him catch a killer.

This was an incredibly fast paced book, set in one of my favorite places. Ms. Drake created a wonderful set of characters (both main and secondary characters) that really tell their own story. The chemistry between Maggie and Sean is wonderful, and I love Lucian....I can hardly wait until he get to his story! This book held me spell bound and totally changed my outlook on how good a vampire book can be! Do yourself a favor and get this book, full of suspense, and romance!
