DEFINITELY A NECESSARY INCLUSION TO THE MILITARY LIBRARY.......1998-12-17

Having read this book several years ago (courtesy of Johannes), the feel of the pilots, the elite of the Luftwaffe and their battles, both in the air and on the ground against their own leadership are critical in understanding how these patriots continued their struggle. Johannes Seinhoff was only one of a handful of men who were qualified to write on this topic; he was present during the revolt in January 1945, along with Galland, Luetzow, Trautloft and others. In order to understand the war, both militarily and politically from the German viewpoint, this book should be read.

Johannes Steinhoff commanded an elite group of pilots trained to fly the first jet aircraft employed in combat, the famous Messerschmitt Me-262, at a time when Reich Marshal Hermann Goring, by then out of favor with Hitler for his failure to stop the Allied bombing raids, denounced his own pilots as cowards. After Goring refused to deploy the Me-262 as a fighter, the role for which it was designed, and instead ordered its use as a bomber, Steinhoff and other senior air leaders devised a plot to depose Goring from his command of the Luftwaffe in the futile hope of staving off final defeat in the air. The pilots’ long-standing disgust with their Reich Marshal’s military incompetence and technical dilettantism led to their dangerous intrigue in the fall of 1944. There was an added element of risk as their desperate gamble came in the wake of the July 20 plot against Hitler, the onrushing Allied onslaught, and the general disintegration of the German military and its war effort.

Steinhoff crashed while trying to take off in a heavily laden Me-262. The explosion left him badly burned and still in the hospital when the war ended. From his hospital bed in the summer of 1945, he dictated to a fellow wounded German soldier the account that became The Final Hours. His memories are vivid, painful, and gripping. Free from the years of recrimination and reflection so common in similar works, his tale recounts the pressure of fighting for a lost cause and the intrigue fostered by an unstable command. His account reveals every facet of a remarkable fighter pilot’s struggle for survival and provides an excellent case study of the plodding bureaucracy and scheming obscurantism so characteristic of the Third Reich.

In the final hours (well really months) of World War II, the German military was still fighting to hope against hope taht something could turn the tied of Allied victory. This was the time when in Hitler's bunker the synchopants were still trying to durry Hitler's favor. This was the time when the Americans, British and Russian armies were reducing the amount of Germany that was left under Nazi control on a daily basis. During this time, units like that of Gen. Steinhoff were still fighting against all odds to try to turn things around.

By then, the Luftwaffe had better equipment in the rocket armed ME-262 jets than they had ever had before. But it was a time when a handfull of these superior planes were attacking thousands of bombers escorted by more thousands of fighters.

Mr. Steinhoff continued to fly in defense of Germany until his 262 crashed on take off and he was horribly burned.

This is a book about a war time hero (176 kills) watching his country fall apart. Then it becomes a story of a man, horribly burned struggling through months in hospitals getting his face put back into something not too horrible.

I was amazed at the vast amount of information in this book and the unbiased way in which it was presented. It covered all types of therapies whether nutritional, medical or alternative and did so indicating which ones were backed up by studies and whether the studies were done in a scientific manner or not. It was very, very helpful.

The best book on fibroids I have read.......2005-06-14

This is the most comprehensive book on fibroids that I have read. It explains the different types, enumerates other conditions that may be confused for fibroids, details diagnosis techniques. It then thoroughly explores each treatment option currently available--and it is up-to-date, as opposed to another book I purchased which was so out of date it didn't even mention Uterine Artery Embolization. It gives statistics on the successes and complications from each treatment, and also suggests questions to ask your doctor and qualifications he/she should have. It assumes that you are intelligent enough to make up your own mind about what treatment you want and does not "sell" one over any other. It is just so refreshing!
I recommend it to anyone who is trying to get through the maze of confusing information about fibroids.

Up To Date Doctors Get Along and Offer Comprehensive Advice.......2003-04-23

Knowledge about fibroids and available treatment options has been changing rather rapidly. This book is clearly the most accurate and up to date at the present time (2003). In a changing field, accurate and up-to-date are critically important. That alone, makes Goodwin/Broder a must-read for any woman dealing with fibroids.

This book is well documented, giving citations chapter by chapter - so the reader has some idea what information came from which sources, and can refer to those sources should she wish.

It is very heartening to see an Interventional Radiologist (Goodwin) and a Gynecologist (Broder) COOPERATING to provide COMPLETE information about fibroids in ONE book. Too frequently, these two branches of medicine appear to be competing with one another, even trying to discredit one another, on issues relating to fibroids and treatment of fibroids. There are treatments for fibroids which involve each of these doctor's specializations. Together these two authors make it possible for women to consider the options based on the knowledge of doctors who support what is best for the PATIENT rather than what is best for the individual doctor's ego or pocketbook. This book does that and does it splendidly well. Broder and Goodwin together set out both the pluses and minuses of the various available treatments and what's appropriate when - regardless of whose specialty each treatment lies within.

The authors even cover what's known about treatments of the future including some currently in clinical trials. Goodwin and Broder also discuss lifestyle changes, suggest ways to implement some of them, and what effects one might or might not realistically expect from such changes. The book is rational rather than emotional.

Although this book is written by doctors, it is clear, concise, easy to comprehend and complete. It is not preachy. It does not talk down to the reader. These authors understand their audience and are able to effectively communicate needed information.

A GREAT READ.......2003-04-23

This is an informative, easy to read book which reveals important information we need to know. It puts the fear we may have into perspective and was very helpful.

You don't have to be a cook to enjoy this book. Apart from the recipes which are generally not complicated, you will find within it's pages a comprehensive reference to truffles, caviar and fois gras, explaining history, production methods, buying tips and what it is that makes these three the most expensive cooking ingredients on the planet.

With nice glossy pages and color photos, this would make a great gift for any food enthousiast!

This book comes at a perfect time. Everyone is a litle down and worried about life. What a great time to indulge yourself at home. The recipes in this book are clear and "cookable" (and you do not have to be a master chef to cook them), the ingredients tell your guests that you really care and it is no more expensive than cooking a prime rib dinner. The writing is excellent and the pictures are beautiful.

I stumbled accidentally onto your site the other day when I was looking for a gift for my daughter. You see, she lost her dog Twinkle a couple of months ago and she's having a very hard time and she's not ready to get another pet. Well, I've found my gift! Your jewelry is perfect. Good for reference but not bible...........2002-12-06

This book discusses each herb by what ailment it can help. From aches and pains, insomnia, and yeast infections; this book lists remedies to over 100 problems. Each herb summary is easy to read and lists the type, dosage, other healing effects, how long it takes etc. It even gives you recipes and information on making your own remedies. There is also a neat section on pet herbal remedies. The only thing that concerned me is that there wasn't alot mention of how the herbs might interact with other herbs or prescriptions you maybe taking. Myself taking an anti-depressant, I know that it is not reccommended taking St. John's Wort. All it says is to check with your doctor as you would any drug. Overall it was a good reference book, but as I have said before never get all your information from one book.
