Personal and immediate.......2000-12-07

As accounts of the Peninsular War and Waterloo go, this is one of the most personal and immediate. It is a collection of letters which Private Wheeler sent to his family. They are goodnatured and peppered with incidents and moving references to life in the Peninsular.

There has clearly been a great deal of editing to these letters before the first publication in 1828 on which later volumes were based, for the letters are solely about life on the Peninsular and all family references have been removed. I point this out because they stand in stark contrast to Major George Simmons book on the Peninsular War, "A British Rifleman" - in which his letters are reproduced in their entirety, including all his questions and somewhat moralistic advice to his family.

Perhaps the descriptions of the Peninsular lose nothing from the removal of this information, but they would have been a lovely addition in order to get a better look at the character of Private Wheeler - as a more fully rounded person rather than an observer - but I digress.

His account is a vivid depiction of the nature of Napoleonic Warfare. He is not too keen on long descriptions of battles - a bit like Peninsular War veteran Harry Smith in that way - but his descriptions of life and detail leading up to events is lovely. I particularly like his account of walking down the road to Waterloo. For some reason I always imagine orderly rows of soldiers but he talks of 'roads literally choked with baggage' - and his regiment becoming so intermixed with cavalry, guns and sores as they marched on. That night it rained, "being close to the enemy we could not use our blankets, the ground was too wet to lie down, we sat on our knapsakcs until daylight without fires, there was no shelter against the weather; The water ran in streams from the cuffs of our Jackets..."

It is not surprising to know that Wheeler is used by many novellists writing about the Peninsular War and Waterloo - Wheelers his eye for detail is good and his writing is pleasant and sympathetic.

A Revealing Look at a Soldier's Life.......2000-12-04

Whomever the Duke of Wellington had in mind when he fulminated that his soldiers were "the very scum of the earth," he could not have been thinking of Private William Wheeler. Steady, good-natured and unaffected, Wheeler was rather the sort of man who formed the backbone of the Peninsular Army- as indeed he would have in any army in any age.

Wheeler served with the 51st Foot- a storied regiment in its time, as it had once been led by Sir John Moore, the hero of Corunna- from early in the Peninsular War to well after Waterloo. After he retired from active service, he collected and edited many of his letters home into an engaging and highly readable volume. Together, they offer insights into a British soldier's life that are indispensible to anyone interested in the Napoleonic Wars.

Tellingly, few bullets fly in Wheeler's letters. Devotees of Waterloo memoirs may be disappointed that he has little to say about the campaign. The 51st was not at Quatre Bras and stood mostly away from the main action at Waterloo, and Wheeler attests to little beyond his immediate angle of vision. Instead, he gives us much about what went on behind the lines- barracks life, mustering for overseas duty, palling around with friends of the moment, military and civilian alike.

One of the most affecting narrative threads from these letter begins late in the Peninsular War, when Wheeler befriends a French POW while recuperating from a nasty wound to his foot. No fanatical Bonapartiste, the Frenchman is actually the son of an Anglophile father and an English mother, and joined the army only to efface the anguish of an unhappy love affair. Two years later, Wheeler looks up his old friend when English troops occupy Paris after Waterloo, and they have a fine old time trolling about the city. This is a revealing look at war in fine detail, a useful reminder that even the greatest historical events are woven from threads of individual experiences.

As a stylist, Wheeler has his moments of plainspoken eloquence, and both Elizabeth Longford and Jac Weller have quoted him to fine effect in their books on Wellington. My own favorite moment is his definitive judgement on his old Commander-in-Chief, and stands, I think, as the last word in the debate over the merits of the greatest of the generals who labored in Napoleon's shadow: "If England should require the service of her army again, and I should be with it, let me have 'Old Nosey' to command.... There are two things we should be certain of. First, we should always be as well supplied with rations as the nature of the service would admit. The second is that we should be sure to give the enemy a d----d good thrashing. What can a soldier desire more."

Not what I was hoping for.......2007-10-04

Like a lot of people out there, I had heard the myths about working out when you're pregnant, and was hoping to read about *real* research about what's truly right for you and your baby.

This book accomplished that goal: it provides an evidence-based description of the benefits of exercise. I now understand that it's not only OK to keep working out -- it's actually advantageous on a lot of levels.

However, this book could be organized better (it seems to skip around too much) and didn't quite have the "exercise prescription" that I'm looking for (I'm actually searching now on Amazon to find some other books to buy).

Bottomline, this book is great for informing you about the benefits and safety of exercise during pregnancy (even though the writing is, at times, kind of long-winded), but when it comes down to what to actually *do*, this book falls short.

P.S. The pictures in this book are from, like, 1983 or something, which kind of makes you feel like it's really not all that up-to-date.

I am halfway through the book. This book is very in depth on the benefits of exercising through your pregnancy (i.e. lung capacity, blood flow, heart rate, etc). I was looking for specific exercises that would be beneficial for me and the baby. I have not seen that in the book so far, but it has assured me that I can run a 5k with no concerns. This is a good book for women who have been exercising seriously before pregnancy and want to continue their level of fitness during pregnancy. It assures you that what you are doing is good for you and the baby.

Great book! Very helpful, especially for a first-time mom........2007-07-30

This book is very helpful to anyone who exercises regularly and wants to get pregnant. I have a medical background and found it easy to read. It might be a little more tedious for those without one. It answers every question you have regarding the effects of exercise not only on the baby but on you as a pregnant woman. I felt much more confident sticking to my regular running program after reading this book, knowing that so much research had been done to show how it would effect my unborn baby. It also gave me concrete evidence to the contrary for those naysayers who suggested that exercise would harm me or the baby. Worth every penny.

Not enough information.......2007-05-08

I skimmed this book pre-pregnancy and thought, great, I can keep working out semi-normally. Now in the thick of things, I'm reading it a bit more critically. I have a couple of areas of concern. First, the women in his studies had to maintain their exercise at above 50% of pre-pregnancy level, at least 3 times a week, 20 minutes of moderately hard to hard exertion. Frankly, that doesn't sound like a whole lot to me. Second, particularly in my first trimester, food and sleep were big concerns -- I just couldn't get enough of either, and the more I exercised, the more I needed. The author doesn't really address the need for more calories and more rest to fuel and recover from vigorous exercise, and how those needs are increased (at least in my subjective experience) durring pregnancy.

So it's all right. It's encouraging me to get back up to speed with my normal work out now that I've passed the extreme exhaustion of the first few months, but it's definitely not answering all my questions.

I actually own ALL of this pair's terrific 'best of' series (or, me and the bank anyway)....and they are great at culling out the really local flavor from zillions of local cookbooks, to truly include THE BEST in each of their books. Well done ladies - wish I had thought of it myself!! I hope you don't have to BUY the hundreds of cookbooks from each state- what a great job to have them SENT to you....but everything I really wanted in the New Mexico book- a near neighbor to me, and one I have visited a few times- but not often enough!

Carol Doak's Simply Sensational Nine Patch Stars.......2007-03-14

We ordered this for my wife who is all wrapped up in quilting. This is one of several of Carol Doak's books, and it is especially interesting bececause it reports that C. Doaks has and sells a special paper for paper piecing, which save the whole house from being covered by very tiny pieces of floating paper. All of C Doak's books have many, many patterns of various styles and colors from which to choose. She is very impressive!

I have tried unsucessfully to do paper piecing before and just didn't understand the concept. This book had many pictures to help you along the way. There are not a lot of pieces in each patch, so I think it is a great book to start out with. those of you who have thought about paper pieceing...give it a try and you too will be hooked. the finished stars are beautiful and PERFECT points every time.

This is truly a one-stop comprehensive guide to organic gardening: it is a big book filled with techniques, definitions, solutions to gardening problems, and a huge listing of organic gardening resources. It's one of the most thorough guides I have seen for organic gardeners--it is well indexed and annotated, and covers all climate zones and growing conditions. If this book doesn't get your motor running about the garden, well, maybe you'll want to try a different hobby. I think it should be a part of any true gardener's library, covered with notes, muddy fingerprints, and with the well-worn pages.

The Organic Gardener's Home Reference is a chart book, plant by plant, in alphabetical order, for vegetables, fruits and nuts, and herbs. The final two sections offer charts for controlling diseases and pests and suggestions for companion plants.

Each chart includes growth conditions, from when and how to plant to what to expect from the mature plant. Following this at-a-glance information is harvest advice, storage requirements and growing tips. Pests, diseases, companion plants and incompatible plants are also listed and the opposing page offers selected varieties (not localized enough to be really useful), special notes, and space for the gardener's notes. A useful quick-reference guide with concise, sometimes unusual advice. For example, the tomato entry suggests solarizing the soil during the growing season to control disease.

I have found this book to be loaded with helpful information. Some basic info, which we can forget, to detailed info to help with particular problems is wonderful. The best thing is, if the book gives you options to fix a problem, it tells you why it works and whether the method is a certain or uncertain fix. It covers everything from planting by variety to pests vs beneficial insests, fungus, soil, and a large index/appendices to lead you elsewhere if needed. It covers companions/ally planting quite well. The only thing I have noted which appears not to be covered is crop rotation. Great Reference book.

This book is excellent for the small homesteader........1999-04-20

I find this book to be an invaluable source of reference. Each area (animal, insect or vegtable) is covered in a short, easy, humerous style. It even covers the basics of beekeeping! The gardening section and the poultry sections are especially good. I would recommend this book for use as a quick reference or as a source for those starting out a small farm to decide which type garden or creatures are the best for their farm.

Far from Russia, she would not set foot in the land of her ancestors until 1959, when she was married to an American editor and herself an aspiring painter well acquainted with the abstract expressionists who were reshaping modern art. Among the most charming passages in Olga Andreyev Carlisle's engaging memoir are her recollections of Paris during the enchanted spring and summer of 1951, when she fell in love with her husband-to-be, Henry Carlisle. She evokes with equal vividness the literary and artistic social life of New York in the 1950s and '60s--Robert Lowell and William Styron mingle in her pages with Robert Motherwell and Jackson Pollock--and describes the natural beauty of Nantucket, historic home to Henry's family. Yet the Russian language, politics, and especially literature are always in her heart; her earliest memories are of her parents reciting poetry aloud with Marina Tsvetayeva, and the closing section details her stormy tenure as Alexander Solzhenitsyn's representative to American publishers. The life of an intellectual in a postwar world.......2000-06-13

This is a graceful little memoir rich in anecdote and detail of post-WWII Paris and New York. In it, the author chronicles her development as an intelligent and talented young woman during the 1950's, beginning in Paris, where her emigre Russian parents strove to carry on the Andreyev family traditions in art and literature. While studying to become a painter, she meets a handsome American student at the Sorbonne, marries, and moves to America. There she dives into the New York art scene, studying with Robert Motherwell and bcoming friends with those who became landmark figures in 20th century arts and letters. Her stoutness of character is indicated by the fact that she persisted in bringing to Motherwell's class the small still-life paintings whose techniques she was determined to master - having to display them among the enormous, flat abstractions with which her teacher and fellow students were enamored at the time. Rather than belabor his charming young student regarding her entire approach to art, Motherwell simply ignored her paintings. In later years, having become a respected writer on Russian affairs, she becomes a conduit and agent for Alexander Solzhenitsyn and other writers living under Soviet oppression.The author's knack for evoking the mood of her times as well as the sights, sounds, and smells of her surroundings, plus her lifelong dedication to the intellectual life and intellectual freedom make this a satisfying and inspiring read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Russian literary society. This book gives an interesting account of her life as an emigre of her life in France and US, and how her Russian heritage and literary upbringing affected her daily life.
