It is very heartening to feel the gentleness and deep caring for humanity from such a powerful man like Mohamed Ali. Reading of this book fills you with hope, love and light.
INCREDIBLE MAN - GREAT BOOK.......2006-11-03
ln this book we get a look at Ali now, the man he has become over the years.
He reflects back through life and most of all, he talks about his life today, the Parkinson's, and all the things he has learned along the way. This book makes you love him, it really does. lt's sprinkled with little quotes of sufi wisdom and stories, a few photos, poems etc. When you get to the page titled 'happy memories' its very moving....He is the biggest inspiration to me, someone who stood up to everyone no matter what they thought, never let anything get him down, and took pride in his race. lf your looking for the best Ali book, as far as details and tons of info. read 'the greatest-my own story' written by Ali himself. You cant get a better picture of him than through his own words and perspectives. Other books about him tell from the authors perspectives of Ali and his actions, ld much rather see it from Ali's view.
Great journey of a good man (simply).......2006-03-03
I have always been a big fan of Mohammed Ali. I have clearly remember my whole family waking up at 4:00 AM to watch Ali's fight (in North Africa); I was about 10 years old then. At that time I have decided to be like him and join a boxing club, but mom god bless her soul discouraged me. Mohammed Ali to me represents values, inspiration and determination. This book clearly brings the very basic and simple human values in Mohamed Ali; one story that touched me the most is the "Road to Heaven" where Mohammed Ali and his daughter pick up a man in front of a church and drive him home. It shows how far Mohammed Ali goes to help others. We can all learn something from Mohammed Ali. I say god bless you man. I also enjoyed all the Sufi stories mentioned in this book one in particular is about the slave Omer and the king. It shows you how respect and trust can bring people together.
A Very Philosophical Autobiography.......2005-10-04
Published recently in 2004, this is a very inspirational and deeply philosophical autobiography by Muhammad Ali.
I am writing this review after having read "Smokin' Joe, the Autobiography." I honestly feel that both autobiographies must be read to shed complete light on the relationship between the two.
This autobiography, which is an "Ebook" (which I wasn't too happy with) goes into interesting detail about Ali's childhood which for the most part has been talked about in televised biographies. Then, thoughout the book, Ali digresses with Islamic tales in order to make points. I found that distracting and elusive.
Throughout the book, he echoes about the power of love and the instinct of "following your heart" so much that, after awhile, I, the reader, feel as if he's belittling me. I didn't like that about this autobiography.
I was however amazed by his work ethic and when he went into detail, about his principles that led to him being stripped of his heavyweight title for not registering for the draft.
I was disappointed that he did not go into more details about his opponents or about those people in his life.
I found the best part of the reading related to his early years with the Nation of Islam movement. His ability to explain their misunderstood purposes and motives to be quite fascinating.
The most powerful aspect was his story about Malcolm X just prior to his death and how he regretted not saying goodbye to him. It was touching.
This book also provides insight on his current health and his mind today which is very active and still filled with love.
There are some disappointments, but there are many gems if you are able to read through the overly glossy parts.

As an addiction counselor, I am always looking for books to recommend to my clients. This book in my opinion is one of the best out there. I usually will have my clients read this along with "7 Tools to Beat Addiction" by Stanton Peele. This gives them an understanding of two very different ways of approaching the problem and between the two you get a pretty comprehensive overview of treatment strategies.

I have read many books concerning 12-step programs and recovery from addiction; and this is truly one of the best that I have ever picked up. Although the book takes a general approach---combining alcoholism, gambling, sex, food, etc. together---it offers profound insights into all addictions. It is well-written, easy to read, and offers many useful suggestions regarding recovery. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is strugging with an addictive behavior.
If you want to stay in denial, don't read this book........2005-10-25
This is a straight-forward, no BS, book about addiction and you don't have to be a doctor to understand it. What it covers includes: addiction & the addictive personality defined, in detail; how folks tend to become addicted; things they tend to try to do about it that don't work; thoughts/beliefs etc to watch out for that undermine recovery (and realistic ways to deal with them); things that DO work to help a person out of addictive thinking/behavior; and what the person in recovery can look forward to as a result of their efforts. It's good not only for those addicted but for those dealing with an addicted loved one.
THERE IS HOPE IN THIS BOOK.
The authors seem to have heard, and can anticipate, every excuse for remaining addicted or relapsing, but they manage to just tell it like it is w/out scolding or being overly sympathetic. The addicted person comes away from this book understanding that he isn't inherently bad after all but just in need of support and some new skills in dealing with life, which he learns are within his grasp. Get your life back -- be brave and buy this book.
Great book; negative review below misses the mark.......2005-02-17
I rarely write reviews of books I've read but had to chime in with the previous reviewer to say that this is a TERRIFIC book for anyone who finds himself/herself ashamed or frustrated by the inability to stop an addiction. It's more than I've gotten from 12-step meetings because it delves into the creation of an addiction from a neuropsychological point of view. That has really helped me recognize what's going on in my head, so I can appreciate the fact that from a physiological point of view, I REALLY AM ADDICTED to some things, and need the group process to fight the battle.

These recipes definately save fat, calories and time. The meals taste great and you don't feel like you are sacrificing on taste. Some recipes do take a little more time than the book states but they are well worth it. I also like that they break down the calories by what percent come from fat. I like the recipe tips offered in the book as well as how the book is broken down by desserts, meatless, fish, etc. This is a winner which I will send to my friends.

Doesn't taste low fat or low cal............2005-05-23
I plan my weekly menus from this book every Sunday morning. There is something in there for every day of the week.... chicken, beef, pork, seafood and even pasta..... all low fat and low calorie. The recipes are so easy and the ingredients are typically your normal kitchen staples with an occassional item added to the normal shopping list.
There's nothing like getting home after a long day at work and still having to make dinner. That's where the Quick & Easy part comes in. These recipes make getting dinner on the table a snap. Usually with-in 30 minutes or less.
You can't go wrong with this book. Every recipe is easy to follow and tasts great. We haven't made 1 thing in the past 4 months that we did not enjoy and we cook from these cookbooks everyday. I had several other cookbooks where I had written on pages "YUCK!" or "NO GOOD" when I've tried a recipe and didn't like it. Not one of the Cooking Light recipes have I done this to. I've since thrown away all the cookbooks I had that are not Cooking Light.
I own 17 other Cooking Light cookbooks, some have easier recipes than others, but this one is my favorite. The taste of the meal is as if you had ordered it from a very good restaurant. My husband and I recently went on a cruise and he said "I like your cooking from those cookbooks better than the cruise food". What more can I say? Buy it, you'll love the way you look and feel. Slimmer and healthier.
Outstanding Taste & Real Time Saver.......2003-04-20
This book has by far the easiest and best-tasting recipies. It is perfect for a small family who are health concious and prefer spending time together rather than in the kitchen. The meals are so flavorfully creative and my family just loves everything that comes out of this book. The best part is the book has great time-saving and serving suggestions that really complement each other. I would recommend it to everyone.

My son bought this cookbook for his girlfriend because of her inexperience with cooking. They have tried many of the dishes with amazing results. New Years Eve we enjoyed Chicken Cordon Bleu from the book and it was delicious. Ingredients are readily available, simple, and best of all LIGHT. I am getting a copy for myself before the day is out.

Nancy Martin is one of my favorites, but this book disapointed me by using either the same or similiar patterns. For someone who doesn't have one of Martins book you will love her designs and instructions.

Lovely book with beautiful quilts made by the very talented Nancy J. Martin. I loved the variations of color and mood provided for each quilt pattern. But honestly, I sent this book back because I have several of Martin's books which include all of these same patterns. In other words, this book duplicated the patterns by her that I already have. Just a word of caution for those of you who may own some of her other books.

I have several cookbooks that I don't use. I have several cookbooks with pictures that I don't use. I have several baking cookbooks that I don't use. I use this book.
I received this cherished cookbook over a year and a half ago at that most beloved of events: my bridal shower. Scattered among all of the crockpots and spatula's was this beauty. I was captivated by it's pictures and compelled to try it immediately. The result: seven tried and tested recipes that are now family favorites. So far, not a bad recipe in the bunch. My favorites are the Go Anywhere Rhubarb Squares and the Sour Cream Swirl Coffeecake. The Best Peach Pie can't be beat either. If you want to feel like a Midwestern cook (and you know these ladies have perfected the art of baking) then I would purchase this cookbook. The pictures alone are worth your time. There are over a hundred baking recipes in this book and I'm going to love trying every one of them. Good job Heartland Baking. I'm sold.

Concentrates on the science.......2006-10-25
While the book begins with a nicely written human interest story, this work concentrates on the science, and the picture is somewhat muddled even today. For one thing, the prion protein has deep evolutionary roots, which should mean it is critical to life, yet genetically engineered mice without prion proteins seem to thrive. The protein is involved in copper utilization but there are biological alternatives in place. There are still a few respectable scientists who are skeptical about the prion infection theory, and Yam points out one piece of definitive evidence is lacking: the ability to create a misshapen prion protein which is conclusively free of any possible viral contamination, and use it to infect an organism. If there is an infectious virus, it would have to be very small and rather unique. There are several hereditary forms of prion disease each of which involves a slightly different mutation of the gene; the disease can have sporadic (randomly occurring) as well as hereditary and infectious (mad cow disease) causes. Only humans with certain alleles of the prion gene are susceptible to mad cow, but 37% of Caucasians, for example, have that allele. No one knows why mad cow disease hasn't clustered more in particular families or regions. Use of human based biologicals in repairing wounds was a prime cause of disease transmission at one time, and we think the blood supply is probably safe primarily because if it weren't, there would be more cases (although the Red Cross does try to screen out potential carriers).
Yam does a good job in emphasizing and explaining the important scientific issues. He also involves the reader in the mysteries as they historically unfolded. Occasionally, he enumerates very detailed findings in a chronological manner when a more enlightening approach could have been used.
A great introduction to prions!.......2006-01-05
This book is a balanced, engaging introduction to the prion diseases. Philip Yam does a great job of presenting the varieties of views on BSE, CJD, and Kuru, and makes it clear to the reader that there are many riddles yet to be solved, and there is still a great deal of controversy surrounding these diseases.
However, he does not spend the entire book focusing on the controversy, and proceeds to delve into the details of prion theory, and possible therapeutic options.
Yam does a wonderful job of presenting the topic, and continues to provide stimulating and novel information on every page!
Easily the best book of its kind.......2004-03-26
Philip Yam's book The Pathological Protein is easily the best book of its kind. Written in clear, simple language for the non-specialist audience, The Pathological Protein is a thoroughly comprehensive, concise and, above all, scientifically accurate review of BSE and related diseases. Yam has been writing and editing for Scientific American since 1989 and this, his first book, demonstrates the high standard to which all science writers ought to aspire.
The first chapter of The Pathological Protein describes, from a very human perspective, the effects of variant Creutzfedt-Jakob disease on one victim, 19 year-old Stephen Churchill, and his family. From this tragedy, Yam then goes on to review the history of CJD and the mysterious diease 'kuru', which reached epidemic proportions amongst the Fore people of Papua-New Guinea because of their cannibalistic funerary rites. After discussing the hereditary transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) of humans, outlines what is known of the TSEs of animals. Philip Yam's reviews of scrapie, BSE, transmissible mink encephalopathy and chronic wasting disease are up-to-date, interesting, and extremely readable.
There is an interesting episode related in the book. Carlton Gajdusek had been searching, unsuccesfully, for the cause of kuru. William Hadlow, and American scrapie researcher on a secondment to the United Kingdom, visited the Wellcome Medical Museum in London to look at a display on kuru that Gajdusek had prepared. It was Hadlow who first noticed the very close resemblance between kuru and scrapie. The similarities in epidemiologic features, general clinical pattern and the neurohistologic changes led him to the realisation that these diseases were probably mmebers of the same family. As a result of Hadlow's insight transmission experiments were started which, eventually, led to our current understanding of the TSEs
This book covers the hypotheses for the origins of BSE, the evidence for the link between BSE and vCJD, current methods and problems of diagnosis of the TSEs, and the search for cures. Philip Yam clearly is thoroughly versed in the scientific literature of the TSEs, but also interviewed a broad range of scientists, consumers advocates and regulators. So, he knows what he is writing about, and this is made evident by the clarity and accuracy of his explanations. Although there is no 'dumbing down' of a difficult and complex subject, the author has written a book which makes his subject easily accessible to the non-specialist reader. The book is referenced, well indexed, has a useful glossary and also suggests sources for further information, including the more useful web sites and organisations providing suport and help for families of CJD victims. While the book is written for the interested lay person, I would have no hesitation in recommending Philip Yam's The Pathological Protein to veterinarians and colleagues who want an interesting, thorough and current review of these fascinating diseases.
