    Book Description

An examination of the life of General Manton S. Eddy, this study details his experiences in World War II as leader of the U.S. 9th Infantry Division through North Africa, Sicily and France, and subsequently, as commander of XII Corps, into the heart of Germany. While much has been written about the top military leaders of this era, there is little information about corps commanders whose missions were limited to doing battle and whose organizations were tailored exclusively for this task. Eddy's career provides a model for the Army's most ambitious officers, particularly those who, like Eddy, faced the challenge without family connections or the traditional West Point education. He devoted his life to the U.S. Army, enhancing his innate talents through the incorporation of a daily program of self-education. Eddy had an excellent grasp of the basic principles of military tactics and strategy. He attained this art through home study and assiduous application at the Army's professional education institutions, in particular at the Command and General Staff College, where he served as an instructor for four years. He focused on people, quickly learning and applying basic skills to draw out their best efforts. He came to know what to expect from them in the chaos and under the pressure of combat. This facilitated his development of strong, mission-oriented subordinates. His personal goal was always to maximize all available power at the correct point for crushing his nation's enemies, and to this end, he was extraordinarily successful.

    Book Description

As a spiritual autobiography, Kierkegaard's The Point of View for My Work as an Author stands with such great works as Augustine's Confessions and Newman's Apologia pro vita sua--but with a difference. It is neither a confessional autobiography nor a defense. It is an author's story of a lifetime of writing, his understanding of the common aim and comprehensive coherence of the maze of his greatly varied pseudonymous and signed works.

In an earlier work, Concluding Unscientific Postscript, Kierkegaard acknowledged his authorship of the series of pseudonymous works that began with Either/Or. With the imminent publication of the second edition of Either/Or, the pseudonymous series would come full circle, and Kierkegaard again intended to cease writing. Now was the time for a direct "report to history" on the authorship as a whole. In addition to the resulting Point of View, which was published posthumously, the present volume also contains the companion pieces Armed Neutrality and On My Work as an Author, a contemporary substitute for the postponed Point of View.

Supplementary entries taken from Kierkegaard's Journals and Papers document the context and the development of the writings on the authorship as a whole. In addition, they disclose Kierkegaard's considerations as he wrestled with decisions about publishing the three works and other works that were the "fruit of the year 1848 ... the year of my richest productivity."

5 out of 5 stars Probably the place to start in reading Kierkegaard.......2002-08-13

The greatest challenge for any newcomer to Kierkegaard is finding the best place to gain an overview. In my opinion, this is the finest place to start. In the main work in this collection, THE POINT OF VIEW (the book also contains some smaller pieces on his Authorship), Kierkegaard sets out to explain his purposes and strategy in writing the books constituting what he calls his Authorship. Students of Kierkegaard generally refer to these books as his Pseudonymous Authorship, because in all of these he writes none of them under his own name, but employs a variety of fictionalized authors, who represent a particular point of view that is not that of Kierkegaard himself. The Pseudonymous works are contrasted with what has become to be known as Kierkegaard's Second Literature (a descriptions attributed to Kierkegaard scholar Robert L. Perkins), which comprises his edifying works and his later religious works, most of which were published under Kierkegaard's own name, though with a couple of his greatest later works published under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus.

Some of these works, such as EITHER/OR I, contain writings on a variety of aesthetic topics. Many of the books deal with either ethical or religious topics, though the latter never from within a religious perspective. Kierkegaard's main argument in the POINT OF VIEW is that from first to last he was, even when writing on aesthetic topics, a religious author. The Pseudonymous works all presuppose a theory of stages, which Kierkegaard describes as moving from the aesthetic to the ethical and into the religious (the precise prepositions, according to SK, being of the utmost importance).

It is not clear that Kierkegaard had a precise understanding of all this at the moment he was writing the first of his Pseudonymous works, but it is unquestionable that he moved to this point of view fairly early on. This little volume is, therefore, a wonderful introduction to Kierkegaard's most famous works, and remains one of the most fascinating reflections by a great writer on the nature of his own work ever written.

There are thousands of books out there on how to live a healthy life, but let's be honest: most of us don't want to live a healthy life -- we want to know how to live our unhealthy lives better. The Healthy Guide to Unhealthy Living is a straightforward and honest guide to maintaining the fast-paced lifestyle you're accustomed to, without giving up all the bad habits that come along with it.

Whether you stayed up all night prepping for that early presentation or want to lose ten pounds fast for a high school reunion, whether you drank too much last night or wound up in an unfamiliar bed this morning, here's the practical advice you need for minimizing the damage and moving on with your life. A few of the issues addressed in this book include:

Whether you indulge yourself in Vegas or your own backyard, when it comes to your health, it's easy to assume the worst. But even if you don't live a completely virtuous life, The Healthy Guide to Unhealthy Living says that if you make some smart choices, you can avoid major worries or embarrassment. While this book won't take the place of your own doctor, it will give you some shortcuts to healthier habits and better living -- like safer sex and better sex, or a healthier diet and a better body -- that might become habits you can live with.

STRAIGHT TALK FROM A DOCTOR ON HOW TO MINIMIZE THE DAMAGE FROM THE UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES WE ALL KNOW WE SHOULDN'T MAKE -- BUT DO ANYWAY

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like having a doctor friend.......2006-05-31

This book is great. It answered a lot of questions for me like, "can you really take Tylenol if you drank the night before ?", "how many ibuprofin can I take a day ?", "are cigars as bad as cigarettes", "how do I really lose weight", etc. It really explains the effects of smoking, drinking, etc. without all the political correctness that you sometimes get (because the drug companies are so afraid of being sued, and our government has become politically correct with its information, especially with respect to alcohol, they often provide extremely conservative information on their drugs, which in effect is not very helpful, because it is so inexact and thus is not good informtion). But this book provides just the straight facts, based on the personal experiences and knowledge of a medical doctor. I highly recommend it to almost anyone (unless you are living on an Amish farm with no access to all the "evils" of modern living).

5 out of 5 stars Straight talk for young people.......2006-03-09

Geared primarily to twenty-somethings, Clayton explains what you should do - don't smoke, one drink a day, get enough sleep - then tells how to mitigate the effects of what you're actually going to do. This 30-something New Yorker is hip and non-judgmental but he doesn't sugarcoat a thing.

His description of what happens to various body parts - heart, brain, lungs - from smoking cigarettes is so graphic, it should spawn quitters throughout the club scene. But most young readers will skip the informative lecture and go right to the part where he says most people can smoke risk-free if they quit by age 30. Well, heck, 30 is a LONG ways off.

Clayton is equally graphic in explaining the physiology and psychology of sexual arousal. This chapter, "Improving Sexual Performance: His and Hers" would be enough all on its own to make this book a dorm favorite. And then it moves seamlessly on to avoiding pregnancy and STDs, answering all the questions that most young people are afraid to ask their doctors. Clayton investigates the myths and rumors, describes symptoms, diagnoses and treatments, calms fears and promotes practicality, creating confidence through knowledge.

And then it's on to drugs where Clayton is equally matter-of-fact, advising on the safest way to ingest, if you absolutely will, various substances from marijuana to E, prescription drugs, and cocaine, but also describing what each to the body, on the spot and over time.

Clayton, and his co-writer, Vanderkam, employ a sense of humor and an understanding of human nature throughout. Whether it's the stress generated by burning the candle at both ends, or navigating that overdue visit to the doctor, Clayton offers advice busy, in-the-moment people are most likely to take.

From hangover cures to beating the drug test at work, from dieting to avoiding impotence, Clayton dispels rumors and cuts to core of the problem. This is a book I wish had been around when I was twenty.

    --Portsmouth Herald

    5 out of 5 stars A "must have".......2006-01-16

Finally a book that reveals the truth behind all those myths. As someone who loves to push the limits, this book has helped me find ways to moderate my habits in a realistic and healthy way. It is honest and dispels some of those hypochondriac moments. We should all have a copy of this book - it's a "must have"

    5 out of 5 stars Accurate and humorous-Worth buying.......2006-01-05

Being trained in Internal Medicine, I've had many of the same conversations with my patients that are described here. However, I envy Dr. Clayton in his ability to approach the same topics with a witty sense of humor. Bravo to Clayton for keeping to the facts and not talking down to readers in this book. I'm buying multiple copies of this book for my friends, all young thirty-somethings in NYC burning both ends of the candle!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, useful advice.......2005-12-26

As a young adult who frequently indulges in weekend drinking and other bad habits, I have constantly suffered many of the issues/worries that Dr. Clayton mentions.
He dispels myths and gives many different alternatives to treat a problem. With the internet, it is very difficult to find unbiased information on supplements/cures for, say, hangovers, stress or weight loss. Most of the time they are trying to sell something based on unfounded evidence. The number of scams out there is astronomical. It was about time to get the facts straight from a real doctor.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes for every day and for occasions.......2001-03-17

This is one of my favorite recipe books. It taught me how to roast a simple, tasty chicken. The roasted vegetable recipes have become regulars for family gatherings. The roasted potato salad is also a new staple for parties. And I still haven't tried everything that I would like to. I find roasting to be a simple way of cooking, with simple ingredients for the most part.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Roasting Recipes.......2000-01-10

This little paperback cookbook contains some of the best roasting recipes I have found. Most recipes are fairly simple and not extremely time consuming and the ingredients are easy to find. The instructions are clearly written and easy to follow and the end results are fabulous. It covers a broad range of cooking from appetizers and soups to main courses, salads and dessserts. I would highly recommend this low key little gem.

5 out of 5 stars what do you do with a serger?.......2007-07-31

I have wanted a serger for a long time and after spending lots of time on Amazon researching, I bought one. The instruction book that came with the serger shows the basics but this book fills in all the gaps. I learned more from this book than the instruction manual and playing with the new machine put together. There are lots of great tips like you don't have to buy 4 spools of thread for every project, you can use bobbins from your conventional machine for the needle thread and lots, lots more. If you are new to serging, this book is a must. It takes away all the intimidation of serging for the first time and gets you going and making your very own garments. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR SERGER USERS.......2006-12-23

I am a novice to the serger world. This book is fantastic if you own a serger.

I bought a new Quantum Singer Serger last month (I did a lot of research-didn't want an expensive one so I bought this one), and after hours of trying to get it to work, I finally did a couple of overlocking projects. They went well, however, the serger instructions that came with the serger, is not enough information to complete the job.

I bought this book thru Amazon, and it is worth it's weight in gold! It walks you thru step by step on how a serger works. It then guides you thru when to use the different types of pressure feet and how they work with woven fabrics and the different types of threads available for your serger.

I am still reading this book; I sit in bed every night and read a few pages. It has opend my mind on how these little power machines can be so helpful with regular sewing, or on some projects, they stand alone. It is a wonderful book to use for reference when your machine gobbles up your fabric and your needle is stuck. It guides you thru on how to remove these issues.

I highly recommend this book; the reviews on Amazon are worth taking the time to read. These are consumers that have taken the time to use their product and rate them at a consumers level. Thank you for taking the time to read this review.

3 out of 5 stars This book did not .............2006-04-06

This book did not cover my five thread Singer serger model purchased Dec. 2005 (paid $599). I need details on the last stages of treading. The only way I can make this machine work is to feed the front needle threads down through the pressure foot hole and the brown looper thread up through the hole in the pressure plate. This is tedious and awkward, requires tweezers and doesn't seem right...but it works. I have gone on line to the Singer serger site and found no help there either. Black threads are nearly impossible to see when threading the loopers and there is no light in the looper area to help you see what you are doing. I am working with magnifying glasses, head lamps, tweezers and screw drivers....constantly..... Grrrr!

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for this book........2006-02-24

I think this book should come with the Singer Quantumlock. Buy it. The manual that comes with the machine isn't enough. This book, along with the online materials from Singer, will make your serger usable and enjoyable. (The book may also be used with other types of sergers.) Great photos. I use this book to figure out how to adjust tension and to figure out which type of stitch to use.

5 out of 5 stars New to Serging.......2006-02-01

Santa gave me a Singer Serger for Christmas. I had never had one so when I saw the Singer book on serging I decided to get it. I think it is a great book. It has great photos with the different stitches so you can tell what is wrong if you have a problem. It also explains how to sew different items with your serger. I've already sewn several napkins and several neck scarves for gifts. I love my new serger and have used "The New Sewing with a Serger" for a reference book. I highly recommend it. Marie Owens

This unique Book Of Days provides meditations of lyrical beauty that arouse with the reader intimations of the creative and the divine. Life In The Garden: Every flower has its budding,/it's day in the sun,/and its end.//All it need know is.../bloom where you're planted,/and then//a moment's rest,/til' called upon again.

At first each entry is a happy poem. Then as it sinks in, I get a deeper meaning that stays with me and keeps me thinking. The only word that can describe my experience is WOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars Helped me get back control.......2007-10-03

This was a very easy reading book with great stories and inspiration. It gave me the push to get back control of my blood sugar.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a book for EVERYONE !.......2003-03-13

I don't have diabetes and I loved this book! Charles Creekmore writes with such honesty and wit that every chapter is a delight. He offers wise counsel with charming humility, and even when I'd "been there before," I found myself mentally thanking the author for reminding me how to get back on the road to mental, spiritual, and physical health. Buy this book for yourself AND for someone else you love!

5 out of 5 stars How to Live the Sweet Life.......2002-12-24

Charles Creekmore has lived in many parts of the world, and in this book, he invites us along on his travels - not only from state to state, but through his ever-changing states of mind as he learns to live (and thrive) with diabetes.

The diagnosis of a chronic illness can be a tremendously demoralizing event. But as Creekmore discovered, it might be the exact impetus we need to improve the state of our soul, and how it relates to our daily lives. Being forced to reexamine our priorities, the way we earn a living, the basis of our self-esteem, our relationship with nature, and all the unhealthy little habits our bodies and minds have learned over the years - this can be the "silver lining" of illness. And what's more, this increase in spirituality can, in turn, improve the health of the body (as illustrated by Creekmore's interviews with patients and doctors).

Spirituality means different things to different people and, in spite of the title, this book is not overly biased toward any one philosophy or religion. Never preachy, it simply encourages you to try some new (or new-to-you) strategies for lightening the burden of diabetes, or any other chronic illness. ( I highly recommend "The Grand Silence" - I've found that earplugs can have a huge effect on my level of stress!)

All of us will have to face change and loss sometime in our lives, and this "maintenance manual" can help anyone do that with a little more strength.

1 out of 5 stars Zen and the Art of Writing Nothing(new).......2002-09-03

There is nothing new which would add to your knowledge of basic "new age" cliches by reading this book. It would not be bad if he applied new age concepts, in a unique manner, to diabetes management. But , he doesn't. The only thing that makes this a "diabetes book" is the fact that his diabetes caused him to begin a search in the new age section of his local bookstore. Usually, ADA books are excellent, but this is one time satori was missed.

5 out of 5 stars Written with humor, flair, and abiding spirituality.......2002-06-07

The final—and most heartfelt—project by one of the greatest women photographers of all time. Fulfilling a long-held dream to discover the lands of her ancestors, Inge Morath traveled to the borderlands of Styria and Slovenia in 2001, camera in hand. This lovely mountainous region, once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, had become the faultline between two conflicting ideologies after World War II and until 1991, when attempts at rapprochement lead to tragedy on both sides of the border.

Morath tried to capture not only the way of life in this divided land, but also to promote reconciliation between two war-torn peoples who share more than just a border. These nearly three hundred photographs depict images of joy and sorrow, youth and age, bucolic splendor and numbing ugliness. Poignant, nostalgic, often comical and always humane, these photographs depict countless examples of the paradoxes and challenges of life in a world marked by war and poverty. They remind us of the eloquence of Morath's work, her celebration of the human spirit, and her deep understanding that history is made up of small as well as large moments.

                                  Book Description

Although frequently invoked by philosophers and political theorists, the theory of negativity has received remarkably little sustained attention. Negativity and Politics is the first full-length study of this crucial topic within philosophy and political theory. Diana Coole explores the meaning of negativity in modern and postmodern thinking, and examines its significance for politics and our understanding of what constitutes the political. Beginning with an insightful reading of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and a consideration of the work of Hegel, Coole goes on to discuss the importance of negativity in the thought of a number of key theorists including Nietzsche, Adorno, Kristeva, Freud, Foucault, Habermas, Deleuze, Derrida and Butler. Throughout, Coole clearly and skillfully shows how the problem of negativity lies at the heart of philosophical and political debate.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE actual Book of Irish Mythology.......2005-08-21

Gods and Fighting Men is an excellent resource because it preserves the lore from the Book of Invasions as well as other sources -- the legends of the earliest inhabitants of Ireland, the coming of the Tuatha De Danaan (The People of Dana) and the stories of Finn MacCumhail.

What is portrayed as "Early Irish Mythology" 99% of the time actually isn't -- the dozens of translations of The Tain, albeit worthy reading, are actually the lore of Ulster, a single Irish province. This makes it Ulster Mythology (regional) more than Irish Mythology (national).

The legends of the Tuatha De Danaan are essential for a comprehensive understanding of Irish mythology, actually comprising the majority of the Mythological Cycle, and deal with the initial settling of all of Ireland.

Unfortunately, it seems to be modern New Age reconstructions of the Mythological Cycle rather than the native stories that seem to be infusing themselves into the mainstream, and that is sad.

In my mind, the Mythological Cycle is the most important cycle in Irish mythology, because it sets up the scenario for all that is to follow. The Fenian Cycle (legends of Finn MacCumhail and his warband) are fascinating not only for their strong associations with Nature, but also for the fact that the stories are well-known both in Ireland and in the Scottish Highlands. The Gods still walked and resided on (or in) the Earth and interacted often with mortals. Magic was all around.

The Tain, on the other hand, is more a time of towns and forts and war-chariots; a time when magic was less present and people were less intertwined with Nature than in the Golden Age. The Gods had already departed our realm and only made brief cameos in the stories.

In summary, Gods and Fighting Men is the actual collection of Irish Mythology from the earliest legends. It affects all of Ireland and the stories are fairly widespread throughout the Gaelic world. Lady Gregory wrote these translations with a view to retain the native Irish sense of story-telling; this she achieved remarkably well.

My one concern is that it would have been nice for Lady Gregory to have cited her sources for each story. I know that in many cases she blended versions from several sources to produce what she saw as the purest form of the story, but a simple listing of these would have been fantastic from an academic standpoint.

Overall this is probably the greatest collection of Irish Mythology I have found so far, albeit Lady Gregory's focus was primarily as storyteller rather than academic (this is not a bad thing -- dry, stale translations of Irish lore would have been extremely anti-Irish in themselves).

This should probably be the FIRST book one reads of Irish Mythology. I highly recommend this book and the fact that it is value-priced definitely doesn't hurt, either. This book is definitely worth several times its cost.

                                  Happy Reading!

4 out of 5 stars A good read, but remember the stylistic differences............2000-06-10

Lady Gregory faithfully renders old Irish stories into a form that we clods that only speak English can understand. She does not, however, make them more prosaic, or fix them into what we normally find as our story format! They are true to the original structures of the genre, and are much more lively and fun for that. My wife places them firmly in the nature of Irish legend, which she calls "We went over there and stole their cow!" (Tain Bo Cuailnge is basically a story of a cow theft, and is one of the most famous stories of Irish legend). I love the split style, and it does give the reader a good understanding of the way stories were related in the old days. A must for those who want to know where some of the ancient Irish names derive!

5 out of 5 stars Irish Myths brought to Life.......1999-02-09

The works of Lady Gregory are the best way to get a pure taste of the original Irish Myths - unless you are fluent in Gaelic and can get a hold of older copies. Lady Gregory's elequent speech and style breathes life into Ireland's forgotten Heroes and Gods!
