Unadulterated truth.......2003-12-03
Coignet tells things as he sees them, often with a disclaimer to reveal his bias. He is candid about his own weaknesses and mistakes often enough to make one believe that when events sound a little fantastic, they are indeed true. Doesn't claim to give us an overview of the Napoleonic Wars, but does an incredible job of letting us see the campaigns through the eyes of a decorated veteran and member of the Guard.
Very good tale, a little biased.......2002-01-11
This book worth the time and the money expended on it. M. Coignet was there, fought and lived to writte his tale. Excellent for anyone interested in the Napoleonic Wars. Besides it is a primary source for a lot of other works on this subject.
The author gives the soldier point of view, a battle is reduced to smoke, cries, fear and sweat. It is a very different thing them showed in the more usual historic approach. Superb.
The only problem is that M. Coignet, in his own words, is to perfect, everybody liked and helped him. Ok, he entered the dreaded Guard, but one can't satisfy everybody everytime. Otherwise a great book.
An 'Old Sweat' Tells His Tale.......2000-06-25
This is one of the top three Napoleonic memoirs that I would recommend, the other two being Parquins Souvenirs, and In the Legions of Napoleon by Brandt. Jean-Roche Coignet started as an illiterate private, and worked his way up to Captain in the Imperial Guard, one of those loyal, ever-present, tough as nails Grumblers that marched and fought the length and breadth of Europe.
Coignet distinguishes himself in his first fight at Montebello in northern Italy in 1800 and is rewarded with a loaf of bread by Berthier, Napoleon's chief of staff. He is almost killed a few days later at Marengo, one of the few who survived in his company, and getting whacked over the shoulder by an Austrian cavalryman, which does effectively cut off his qeue, which saves his life.
He is one of the first recipients of the Legion of Honor in 1804, serves throughout the wars all the way to Waterloo, and kills a Prussian officer in a one-on-one contest between the lines outside of Paris. The Prussian was yelling insults and made him angry.
This is a great tale, well told by a loyal, hardworking, very good soldier who did more than his assigned duty. I have a picture of Jea-Roche Coignet, a photograph taken in old age-he still looks as if he could eat nails for breakfast, and wouldn't take too kindly of insults against his Emperor. Just seeing the picture made me believe the book.
A classic memoir.......1999-12-24
Very often used as a primary source, this classic memoir is well known to Napleonic writers such as John Elting. Many exciting stories, probably easier to believe than Marbot, though not as much fun and detail. Marengo and Russian campaings particularly good. Goes through his story swiftly and this may make many readers feel cheated.

Book Description
I Am Dynamite ignites an alternative theory of the self and will, wrapped up in a combustible assault upon scholarly convention. Asking why the real effort of constructing and living within an identity is so often overlooked, it examines the subjective experience of existing in the world, with the power to define and transform oneself. Considering the trials and triumphs of five very different modern subjects--Primo Levi, Ben Glaser, Stanley Spencer, Rachel Silberstein and Friedrich Nietzsche--Nigel Rapport asks: can consciousness of being a self in the world enable control over one's life within it? Calling for a renewed appreciation of the extraordinary within us all, this richly inventive work seeks to restore knowledge to its essential practical and moral aims--aiding and informing the lives we actually live.

A beautiful book.......2007-08-14
Learn to Swim: Step-by-Step Water Confidence and Safety Skills for Babies and Young Children is a beautiful book about teaching kids to swim. It has great pictures, step by step instructions, and games and techniques for teaching your children how to swim. I especially liked the fact that it very clearly stated what children can learn at each stage. So Caleb is now old enough to be learning how to hold his breath. (He's 11 months old.) They not only said he can learn how to hold his breath, but explained how to teach him and what to watch for to see if he's comfortable with it or we need to take some more time. I now have a very clear guide of what I can work on with him and what I might want to wait a bit on.
great.......2007-06-26
This is a great resource if you are a new parent, pregnant, or are a child swim instructor. It gives you a lesson by lesson outline. Very useful!
Early Swim Lessons.......2007-04-12
Teach your baby to swim with this proven step-by-step process. You'll enjoy watching your little one steadily become more confident in the water.
Step by Step process.......2007-04-11
This book goes in-depth into teaching your child to swim. It builds confidence in your child as well as teaching him/her survival skills. The approach is child-centered, not "sink-or-swim" methods. I would recommend this book if you have a newborn (four months) or an older child (5-6 years old) getting a late start on swimming.
Excellent Book!.......2007-04-10
The photos and graphics in this book (learn to SWIM) are by far the best I have ever seen in this type of book. The pictures look like they were taken by a National Geographic Photographer! While this is typical Rob and Kathy McKay instruction I especially like the way they give tips and techniques for each age group of new swimmer (from 6 months to 4 years old).
I have found all of Rob and Kathy McKay's products (including videos, book, and instruction) to be the best on the market for teaching babies and young children to swim and ENJOY the water safely. It is no wonder that Rob McKay was twice recognized at the International Swimming Hall of Fame "for outstanding contribution to Aquatic Safety," and as the person who "best exemplifies the teaching philosophy of Virginia Hunt Newman." For those of you who don't know Virginia Hunt Newman, she is considered the "mother of infant swimming" and is a pioneering advocate of the gentle, positive approach to teaching babies to swim.

.......2007-07-27
This book has easy to follow directions in back on how to do everything and has many cute ideas.
They mainly have the how-to of wedding invitations so if you are looking for a variety of ideas this isn't the book for you.
Great Invitation Instructions.......2007-06-08
I first checked this book out at my Library, but I got tired out the overdue fees and finally purchased it. I used a couple of the designs in the book as the basis for my invitations. The instructions are great and there are a variety of designs and ideas. People still tell me that we had the most beautiful invitations!
Not worth buying...get it at the library.......2006-10-24
This is a so-so book, at best. It doesn't show that many ideas, and they are largely focused towards invitations. If you're not making your invitations, this book probably isn't worth looking at. There are a few things to glance at, but all in all, this book shows nothing new and isn't really worth buying. I was disappointed by what was in the book---with a very few exceptions, it's all about using different papers to make invitations.

From seed selection to meal preparation (including 50 recipes) this book is a definitive, lighthearted guide to growing and enjoying over 40 different varieties of sprouts.
Customer Reviews:
Best Sprout Book.......2007-05-14
Great, no-nonsense narritive. I'd read it even if I wasn't into sprouting. Mark Mathew Braunstein is quirky and knowledgeable without being mystical or condescending. I was a little shocked, however, to hear his take on alfalfa sprouts.
A very complete, helpful guide.......2004-05-30
I have read several sections of books on sprouting, and have sprouted off and on, for 20+ years, but this is the best, most detailed, and therefore most helpful of everything I've found. I think teaching someone to sprout from a book is a little like learning to tie your shoes by book: it is easy once you've done it a while, but very difficult if you are a rank beginner. This book is written completely enough for the true beginner, but with LOTS of information for those wanting to "take their sprouting to the next level" by trying scores of different seeds. I finally learned WHY I didn't have success with some types of seeds, and WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT! The only disappointment is that the nutritional information seems mere assertions, with no charts of which sprouts yield what amounts of which nutrients; still, the book is very worth owning. And, by the way, sunflower sprouts are divine on a salad!
Sproutguy's revised review of the Revised Edition.......2000-08-02
Mark did a great job of updating this book! It is packed with a whole lot more info (not that the 1st edition wasn't packed as well) and is layed out beautifully. All I said in my review of the 1st edition still goes, but I now kinda enjoy the puns and the additional info makes this book even more indispensable. This is the BEST BOOK ON SPROUTING that currently exists! When all is said and done this is what remains: We (The Sproutpeople) have grown over 180 tons of sprouts (by hand) - from over 70 types of seed - since 1993, and when we have a question that we don't know the answer to, we pick up THIS BOOK!
A relatively comprehensive though dogmatic reference........1998-06-11
As a professional sprouter I have plenty of experience - and - have read every book under the sun on sprouts. Mark's book is full of terrible puns but when it comes to information on a wide variety of seeds is better than any other I have seen. It still suffers from the same problem as all the others - it states THE WAY to sprout. I have found that there are many ways to sprout and very few hard and fast rules. The result is that newbies follow the written advice and refrain from experimenting - thus limiting their sprouting experience and, I fear - the joy of that experience. It seems to me that everyone who writes books on sprouting must have read a book before they ever sprouted and that they eventually pass on the same misinformation they originally took as fact. I on the other hand didn't read a book until I'd sprouted for a year or more, and when I did I read that things that worked well for me couldn't possibly work at all. So, take what you read with a grain of salt and know this: seeds want to germinate (sprout). If you expose them to moisture they will do it, so sprouting is nothing more than making the the conditions good. Experiment freely. Happy Sprouting :-)

A confirmation of my exact thoughts.......2006-04-11
When you are proud to carry on traditions but discouraged by others to do so, a book like this goes a long way in confirming your thoughts of maintaining traditional family ties. My kids are bilingual, and now suddenly it is hip to be bilingual. I love the rhymes and songs, I double love the stories of maintaining that balance between two worlds. I could care little if others approve of us having two worlds to reap from....but I do like reading that someone else is as concerned about helping our children remain steady in both the English and Spanish ethos and languages.
Seems like a nice book so far.......2001-08-22
I just got this book yesteday and so far I really like it. I am not a latina but most of my friends are and more importantly my Goddaughters are. I bought this book so I could better understand their heritage that even their parents who were both born and raised here do not really know about. I enjoy reading the dichos, songs, stories as well as recipes and of course the advice in this book.
Inspirational!.......1999-11-06
Gloria Rodriguez is an inspiration to parents everywhere. If you're even THINKING about ordering this book, DO it. This is a book you will save and cherish.
Every Latino Family in the U.S. should have this book........1999-09-03
Raising Nuestros Ninos is by far, the best parenting book I have read. The book has helped me truly recognize my children and myself as bicultural. She addresses some difficult questions: what language should I speak to my child in? Is it really a good idea for grandma to babysit? Furthermore, Gloria makes the reader see that being bilingual and bicultural is an asset.I wish all latinas, including teenage moms had access to this incredible book.
EDUCATIONAL INFORMATIVE ENTERTAINING.......1999-06-03
I FOUND THE BOOK TO BE ENLIGHTENING AND REWARDING. THE AUTHOR SHARES WITH US VALUABLE PARENTING SKILLS AND ADVICE, SHE ALSO INCLUDES CANDID YET REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES IN HER OWN UPBRINGINIG AND ALSO THE RAISING OF HER THREE CHILDREN. THE BOOK ALSO INCLUDES MANY FAVORITE LATINO SONGS AND RECIPES. ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK IS FOCUSED TOWARDS LA FAMILIA, IT SHOULD BE EMBRACED BY ALL. WHETHER YOU ARE ALREADY A PARENT OR SOON TO BE PARENT, THIS BOOK CAN BE A VALUABLE GUIDE IN HELPING TO UNDERSTAND AND RAISE YOUR CHILDREN.
Book Description
After maintaining a professional and personal relationship with Louis Kahn for seven years, Anne Griswold Tyng departed in the autumn of 1953 for Rome. During her year in Italy, where their daughter was born, Kahn wrote weekly to Tyng, and his correspondence to her is published here for the first time. The fifty-three letters document not only their intense private relationship, but also give a vibrant account of the experience of a brilliant young architect on the cusp of achieving international renown.
Anne Tyng's introduction and epilogue frame Kahn's letters within the contexts of both their personal histories. Tyng's account of her own extraordinary life-- growing up as the child of missionaries in China, fleeing political turmoil on the eye of the Communist Revolution-- although factual, often reads like adventure fiction, and reveals Tyng to be a gifted writer. She also records the sequence of Kahn's and her work together, including their collaboration on such seminal works as the Yale University Art Gallery and the Trenton Bathhouse, as well as her independent architectural projects.
Kahn's letters, together with Anne Tyng's intimate essays, vividly capture the professional politics of the modern architecture scene-- such prominent figures as Philip Johnson, Eero and Aline Saarinen, Vincent Scully, George Howe, Pier Luigi Nervi, and Robert Venturi make appearances-- and illuminate the creative processes at work in the early stages of Kahn's emergence as one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century.
