This book really tells a good side of the war that i think not to many people know about. He tells the story in a very light hearted manner which makes the book pleasent to read. I wish more people would tell war stories like this.

Great World War II Book!.......2004-05-12

This is a great read for anyone learning about or interested in World War Two. It was written by a veteran who saw action in two continents, participated in two D-Day invasions, and fought in 7 major campaigns. The book takes the reader through the daily lives of these young men during an unspeakable time, but also shows a much lighter side of things. The strength and character of the author and other soldiers is amazing. George Flynn is a true hero and member of our Greatest Generation. Books such as this one help their stories live on.

What happens, asks Patrick Riley, when a life transformed becomes an autobiography? What is the relationship between the subjective upheaval of conversion and the representation of character? Who, then, is this "self" writing the narrative of a life? Thinking of conversion as a radical turning point or fulcrum on which incompatible configurations of character are precariously balanced, Riley examines both historically and tropologically the paradoxes of identity and life writing that conversion raises. While conversion can motivate the writing of an autobiography that ties together threads of a life story, it also implies a fragmentation of character. As it creates a unified framework for the subject's history, it also disrupts any stable conception of the self.

Beginning with Augustine's Confessions as the canonical model of religious conversion, the author investigates the changing forms of conversion in selected works by Montaigne and Descartes, culminating in reformulations by Rousseau and Sartre. Moving from a purely religious rebirth to works grounded in a personal philosophy or aesthetic vocation, the autobiographies considered in this book stand as episodes in a genealogy of conversion.

Riley argues that the metamorphoses of character inherent to conversion disrupt any interpretation or even representation of the self as static. It is no longer clear that the narrator represents the subject in any but a nominal way. In fact, Riley contends, the subject of an autobiography can never be self-identical.

Challenging predominant theories of subjectivity in autobiography, Character and Conversion in Autobiography recognizes subjectivity as a dynamic process and suggests a redefinition of how we examine character and life writing.

I read this book before I read "Conquering Infertility" and I thought it was amazing and bought copies for so many friends.. it's written for every woman and offers a wide range of treatments and especially, lots of hope. I now recommend it to every girlfriend of mine struggling with life and lots of medical/psychological issues as I recommend "Conquering Infertility" to every woman I met going through fertility treatments.

This may be a good book for seomone who is not familiar with any form of mind body medicine, yoga, meditation, ect. For me, it was very conventional, not at all progressive..basically just talks about simple relaxtion techniques that are pretty common. And, it is kind of an infomercial for her training programs. I kept waiting for the book to get better or inspiring and it just never did.

I first heard of Alice Domar and the Harvard Mind-Body Institute's Infertility Program in an article which highlighted a research study that found that infertile women who underwent a relaxation program had a higher rate of pregnancy than a control group. Living nowhere near Boston, I was very interested to discover that Dr. Domar had written a book. The book is wonderful and I recommend it to people going through infertility all of the time. I am not one to go for touchy-feely stuff, and this is not at all like that. Rather, it is a down to earth, medically-based, normal, and intelligent approach to getting our lives together. It is a very important companion to anyone undergoing infertility treatment.

This book was recommended to me last spring by members of my infertility support group. I love this book! It was the first book to acknowledge the amount of stress, pain and depression infertile women go through. I use the relaxation techniques not just for infertility, but for every crisis in my life. The advice is practical, simple, and easy to use throughout the day. And it does seem as if the book was written just for me! The audio tapes are helpful as well. The book is a true gift. I just donated a copy to a friend going through infertility, with the stern instruction that I wanted it back. Of the 5 books I gave her, this was the only one that's on loan!

After 2 miscarriages (on Clomid) I was a wreck. A friend gave me this book and without Clomid I got pregnant and delivered a healty happy boy. We're now pregnant again with #2 (another boy!) and I have re-read 2 of her chapters at least 25 times each. I wish I could meet Alice and tell her what a life changing book this was for me.

This cookbook is one of the best I have come across. I love cookbooks and I'm always trying different recipes. But this cookbook has really got me trying one recipe after the other.
If you like to cook and like tasty and delicous food and most of the recipes are pretty easy to prepare you should purchase The Soup Mix Gourmet.

A New Favorite.......2003-12-08

After finding this book in the library and looking through it... I knew I HAD to buy it. There were just too many recipes I wanted to try. I usally only buy canned soups, and while I have used them in creative ways I never dreamed that they, along with dry mixes could add so much to so many foods! I plan on making one of the shrimp dip recipes for our department pitch in, and a co-worker is going to make the Tomato Soup Spice Cake. This book is for the novice as well as the experienced cook. Keep it handy.. you will use it often!

This cook book is a must have for anyone needing new ideas for the family. A short grocery list is all thats needed to provide variety. I found that most of the items required were things I already had in the pantry. These dishes have very simple ingredients and I have found many that are winners with my sometimes picky young adult children. They are quick which is great for the working mom. Vegetables are used throughout, so it's not just a cheese and starch book. What impressed me most was the layout of the book itself - it's just as easy to find a new recipe as it is to prepare one.

I checked this out from the library after reading the great reviews. It gives some very helpful advice with a list of must have spices, herbs, and a list of the different soup mixes with an explanation of what each can be used for. There's also a section on recipes for dry rubs and seasoning mixes which was great.
I made the meatloaf last night with the beef onion soup mix and used cornbread stuffing in place of plain breadcrumbs and spread the ketchup on top. It tasted so good! Then I realized that I wasn't feeling like myself which usually happens after I have something with BHT or MSG (monosodium glutamate). All the Lipton soup mixes contain MSG. I was so disappointed. Unless I can find another brand of soup mix without MSG this book won't do me much good. :(

Too Far Out.......2007-04-14

I was not real impressed with this cookbook, a little too far out for my taste. I think I wanted something more basic. There are some dips that I'll probably make and some I might be willing to try. The book has a pretty good section on dippers. I think there should have been a section for salads as some of the recipes reminded me more of a salad. If I had looked through this book before buying, even at the bargain I got on it, I would have passed this one up.

I have made a number of dips from this book, and I'm always satisfied. The recipes are easy to follow, and the dips seem to always receive rave reviews. The dips are basic enough, but also usually have a unique twist that satifies. If you need to make a dip, then you should pick up this little gem of a book!

This small book contains a very nice assortment of spreads and dips. Many are quite fast and easy to prepare, and all have substantially reduced fat content. Despite the trimming of fat, the ones I've tried are very rich in taste, and won raves from guests at a recent party. The price is a bit high (I borrowed a copy from the library), but I liked it so much that I may buy my own copy.

It tells you how to keep your cat from doing bad things such as scratching, jumping on place and pooping outside of its litter box. It tells you step by step how to train your cat to do tricks too. I thought this book was very useful. The person who had the Tabasco sauce problem probably fed their cat too much hot sauce. Everything depends on how smart the owner is. The book even said that! This book has a few black and white pictures of the author's cat doing tricks.

Don't ruin your cat!.......2004-11-28

I purchased this book awhile ago and can say the techniques used in this book are not ones you want to use with your cat.

For instance, the author stresses you should train your cat not to purr, by telling it "No" everytime it begins to purr. I followed their advice and now have a harder time telling when my cat is happy as he doesn't purr anymore.

Also, when disciplining your cat not to chew on wires behind a multimedia cabinet, the author mentions putting Tabasco brand sauce on the wires so the cat stays away. Again, this backfired as my cat developed permanent stomach problem that, after $800 worth of vetrinary tests, I can only link to the Tabasco "training" he recieved.

Obviously, if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't. Please don't ruin your cat!!!

I bought this book to replace my old sewing reference book, a Singer book, circa 1975. I thought it was about time.

This book is a very good reference book. It has the general information in it that a sewer would be looking for. I am talking your basic stuff like on stitches, patterns, how-to's, even stitching buttons on.

I have been sewing nearly all my life, and I do have other specialized books, like for drapes, but this general reference is great for things you want to refresh your memory on. I would definitely recommend this book for the beginner as well.

This book has very complete instructions for many types of window teatments. It is clear and well illustrated with photos. I used it to make inverted-pleat drapes for my guest room, and they turned out great! I was taking a home dec sewing class at the time, and I liked this book better than my required text book.

The author and I agree philosophically that moderate to severe depression or bipolar disorder is probably best treated with medication. However, the lack of solid information about psychotherapy in this book is something I don't agree with. And the quality of writing isn't that great, either. Nonetheless, the author has a somewhat unique approach to treating mental illness that is worth hearing. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

This is a great book to read. It is very easy to understand. Once I started, I had to finish it that night. I lived with a person for 15 years that suffered from bi-polar-I wish I could have read this 15 years ago. I think the most important lesson that I got from this book is never give up trying. If you give up hope, then you have indeed lost. Bob Olson never gave up and now I hope others will benefit from his story. I highly recommend it.

horror and glory stories. This book is a keeper for anyone
that knows anyone with depression. Its a first aid kit.

Win the Battle: by Bob Olson.......2001-12-24

After witnessing somebody very dear to us attempting suicide, I decided to visit our local library for all the books about manic Depression that I could get my hands on. I got about eleven of them. I decided to order 2 of them. "Essential guide to Depression" and "Win the battle" by BoB Olson.
I hope I did the right choice. I will take both books along with me as I will go back 6 January, 2002, to take turn to be with her for a period of time. I felt I got to be educated about this desease before I would be of any help.As we left she was already committed in the hospital in Los Angeles. She is willing to be helped.
One thing though, I wish Bob Wilson would have been a woman, because I read, there can also be Hormonal Disorders. But then I thought the 3 steps are all the same in either case.
Wish me and her the best. I believe your book will help her and me. Thanks.
