Big Pharma [..].......2007-02-02
This book is fairly comprehensive. For that I give it the two stars. But, it uses the conventional endocrinologist view that TSH is god and treatment with "T4 Only" is the ONLY way to go. WRONG. It does work for SOME people, but not all can convert T4 into T3. If your doctor is of the "T4 Only" school, and your free T3 and free T4 and TSH tests all come back "within normal ranges", find another doctor who will treat by symptoms. The authors feel that sub clinical hypothyroidism does not exist. They state to "look for other reasons for your health problems" if your tests come back normal. This is totally WRONG and the reason we have so many people out there with chronic illnesses. They also trash Armour in this book when it has helped millions of people. Net result: find a doctor who will treat symptoms, not test numbers!
Best I've Read on Thyroid.......2007-01-22
I'll simply echo the five star reviews. I've read a lot of Thyroid books and agree that this one is the most complete, informative and also well written book I have read. Of the husband and wife team one is a long term medical writer on Thyroid; the other is a medical doctor with a Thyroid clinic in Lexington, Ky. Additionally, both author's are hypothyroid patients. This an introductory book instead of a medical text, obviously intended as basically explanatory of various thyroid problems. Where the book gives a point of view or preference to particular treatment or test, there is a thorough analysis and explanation. After reading this book you will understand why most thyroid doctors avoid prescribing T3, but also the arguments in favor. I found the book very even handed in its approach. If I had any complaint there might be a more detailed explanation of hypothyroid related to heart problems and the mechanics of congestive heart failure caused by hypo. I was very impressed with this book and as a hypo patient refer to it constantly.
The best thyroid book on the market !!.......2006-05-05
My family and friends tell me that I am obsessive and compulsive. I think that they must be right. When my doctor told me that she suspected that I had a thyroid problem, I went to the Borders in Montreal and sat down at the cafe with all of their thyroid books. After two hours I had read or skimmed nearly every page in most of them. It was immediately clear that The Complete Thyroid Book was head and shoulders above every other book that was there. The depth and breadth of the information covered in the book was amazing, yet it was completely understandable. I had never heard of either of the two authors at that time, but I`ve googled them and now see that they`re both very qualified and this explains how they were able to write such a wonderful book. Hypothyroid problems run in my family and each of them is going to get this book from me as a birthday gift.
Pharmaceutical propaganda?.......2006-01-22
Although there is some good technical thyroid information contained in the book, I found the usual "TSH is God" propaganda. A review of any thyroid forum on the Internet will show very quickly that TSH isn't working and that when folks switch back to the old ways, they can get well. Old ways means treating by symptoms and using desiccated thyroid extract which has been used successfully for over 100 years.
Two new books written this year by Dr. Starr and Dr. Hotze finally offer real relief to hypothyroid suffers who find that the synthetic chemicals just don't work for them.
By the way, I would be extremely cautious in believing anything in a thyroid book if the writer receives funding by Abbott, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Synthroid.
I was almost dead from advice that TSH rules. And I'd be dead again if I continued to listen to it. No thank you.
Reflections of a hypo MD.......2005-10-27
I am thankful this book exists, but acknowledge that the authors are walking a very difficult and unpopular path: it's called the truth. I have several unhappy hypothyroid patients whon are "science deniers". They are further influenced by thyroid books that dispense dangerous guidance by questionable authors (some with absolutely no medical education) claiming that all doctors who practice conventional medicine are somehow corrupted by pharmaceutical companies. When I try to counsel them about appropriate therapy for hypothyroidism, they get upset when I suggest 21st century therapies and tests instead of Depression-era practices that have long been abandoned. Many patients have been doing their own reading, and have been exposed to simply wrong advice: mainly that the TSH test is somehow "evil" and that any type of thyroid hormone produced through biotechnology is equally suspect. I try to use my own health scenario - a female doc in her 50s who is managing hypothyroidism, too - as a way to reach some of my patients. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it's like having to defend things that ought to be self-evident: evolution or a "round" earth. Frankly, I've been in a quandary until I found this excellent book as a tool. And boy, do I use it.
I feel compelled to point out that some of the reviewers on this book page are woefully miseducated, if in fact these are "genuine" reviews by people who have actually read The Complete Thyroid Book. One reviewer curiously admits that she hasn't read the book, and yet is reviewing it nonetheless??
I find these reviews suspect because anyone who actually reads this book will clearly see the many pages dedicated to explaining the very things some of these reviewers claim it doesn't do:
1. The History of the TSH test, flaws with the established "normal range" and why the former "normal" range has been revised. All the information on TSH actually discusses how informed doctors use the TSH test, and how this test reflects the actual response of each patient's body to their thyroid hormone on a biochemical/cellular level. The human body is very, very complex and can have many different things wrong with it, all causing the same symptoms that seem to be hypothyroidism. Understanding and using the TSH test lets your doctor figure out when the low thyroid level is causing your symptoms and when something completely different (like sleep apnea or clinical depression) is causing your symptoms. There really isn't any such thing as a "TSH lovers" as one reviewer oddly labels these doctors. Are doctors also "MRI lovers" or CT-scan lovers" if they utilize the very best tools to assess their patients' health status?
2. This book explains the history of older diagnostic tests, such as basal body temperature tests, and why they are flawed and outdated. This book takes the time to discuss all the other diagnostic tests, including some that were used before the development of modern testing. I suppose some of the misguided reviewers that complain about this book would prefer that we not use modern blood tests to check their blood sugar. Instead, they would trust a doctor more if we had to taste their urine for sugar? The debate over TSH-tests versus basal body temperature testing is similar to a diabetic patient wanting a doctor to taste her urine instead of giving her a blood test that checks glucose levels. It's truly absurd.
3. This book discusses thyroid hormone therapy that is "bio-identical". What's wrong with natural thyroid hormone taken from animals, such as Armour? This book spends a lot of time explaining why it's not optimal - particularly for patients who require TSH suppression doses, or require a consistent level of thyroid hormone. Would a woman in menopause demand horse urine over bioidentical hormone replacement therapy? Should a diabetic patient demand beef or pig insulin, causing allergies and rashes, rather than the superior forms of insulin made through modern technology? Of course not! So why would a hypothyroid patient demand that I give them dried pig thyroid gland extract with an unreliable mixture of thyroid hormones, which can produce very uneven thyroid levels, instead of a pure formulation that will make them feel better? Anyone who reads this book will see that the authors are not promoting "Synthroid" over any other brand of levothyroxine sodium (they don't even mention brands at all); they are simply explaining why levothyroxine sodium is the best and appropriate thyroid hormone replacement therapy - because this is the TRUTH. Would some of these hypothyroid readers prefer we doctors prescribe recipes for pig thyroid gland dishes, and tell our patients to eat animal thyroid glands? That was what we did in the 19th century. Is this better because it's "natural?"
4. This book provides the latest knowledge about T3 supplementation and the false theory that T4 does not "convert" into T3. This absurd T4/T3 conversion "problem" some books and websites discuss, is not based on any known biological reality. T3 should not be a first line therapy; although it may be helpful in some patients with thyroid cancer, which this book discusses. I wholeheartedly support the authors taking a stand on this issue. Too many doctors prescribe T3 because they admit that they don't have the "time" to fight with their patients. The latest clinical studies all support the fact that T3 is not helpful for hypothyroid patients. This book goes into great detail about the studies on T3, and the bare facts.
5. It discusses the reason why some people feel "hypo" in spite of normal TSH levels - using the most up-to-date normal ranges. This book has the courage to state the reality that no hypo patient (including me) likes to hear. Fatigue and weight gain, depression, and the myriad of symptoms often associated with hypothyroidism are not always caused by hypothyroidism in a person who has normal thyroid hormone and TSH levels. These are symptoms in the vast majority of aging baby boomers - with both normal functioning thyroid glands and hypothyroidism. We're sedentary, getting older, and our metabolisms slow down with age. Many of us are sleep deprived or suffer from unrecognized sleep disorders. This occurs in the entire population of people with healthy thyroid glands, too. This book points to a long and wide range of other conditions readers need to explore, which need to be ruled out. This book explains that after a bout of hypothyroidism, we can get out of shape due to the severity of the hypothyroidism (particularly if it was long undiagnosed), and it can take much longer for us to "come back".

Great for Mexican Theme Entertaining........2006-03-08
`Mesa Mexicana' and `too hot tamales' are the two books currently available from the chef / teaching / restauranteur team known as the `too hot tamales' of early Food Network fame, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. They recently went up against Bobby Flay on `Iron Chef America'. Not that it really matters, but I don't remember who won or what the secret ingredient was. What is important is that it was easily one of the most entertaining and memorable `Iron Chef America' episodes, comparable to the very first one featuring Chicago Mexican cuisine expert Rick Bayless and the competition featuring Oriental fusion master, Ming Tsai of `Blue Ginger'. What I do remember is the imprint of the iron on the back of Susan Feniger's blouse and the inventive recipe they did for Scotch eggs.
The first impression of both of these books is not inspiring. The layout is ordinary, leaning toward the garish. The photographs are in a grainy black and white and too small to easily make sense of what is happening, not to mention the fact that most are missing captions. In `too hot tamales', it is even difficult to tell which of these two delightful ladies is Mary Sue and which is Susan, from the lack of clear identification on the photographs. The flyleaf of `Mesa Mexicana' clears this up. Mary Sue is the taller with blond hair and Susan is the shorter with dark hair. They also neglect to give a good picture of co-author, Helene Siegel, whose voice seems to be strong in the prefaces and introductions.
Based on the strong `Iron Chef America' appearance, I decided to check out the books from this duo, even though their Food Network show was before my time. I figured two gals with this much energy and a strong showing against the indomitable Bobby must have something to say. At the outset, the book `too hot tamales' did not impress, until I got to the chapters on soups. At this point, the authors' observations seemed to come alive. This was not nearly as strong as what I saw in Deborah Madison's recent book on soups, but the comparison showed that Mary Sue and Susan clearly had something important to say. That is not to say that `too hot tamales' is the better book. `Mesa Mexicana' is actually the better of the two for anyone who is not familiar with Mexican cooking. Having determined that these books have something to say, the next big question is why get these books instead one from the heavy hitters of Mexican cuisine, Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy.
For starters, both Bayless and Kennedy's best books are more strongly oriented toward teaching Mexican cooking, either by technique or by region. Milliken and Feniger's books are more for fun, without straying too far from strong roots in genuine Mexican cooking technique. If all you want are some good, snappy recipes without being tied to the grill (as you are with many of Bobby Flay's recipes), Milliken and Feniger may be your best choice. They are certainly your best choice if you are attracted to entertaining with a Mexican theme. I had an epiphany of insight when I realized that a rather large number of pages in both books, as well as many pages in many other cookbooks are dedicated to `starters', `finger food', `appetizers', `hors `d'ourves', `antipasto' and what have your. But if you live in a typical family, how much time do you really spend making `party food' in comparison to daily breakfasts, lunches, and suppers. Why don't cookbooks dedicate 20% of their books to breakfast and 35% of their books to brown bag food rather than giving so much room to entertaining food, which the average cook may make once a month, if they are inclined to entertain with food in the first place.
All this means is that these books are much more valuable to you if you do entertain often. This is especially true because both books are very reasonably priced, appropriate to their uninspired art work. It is also true because of the rather odd organization of the recipes. In both books, some chapters are organized by function or meal, some by style of cooking, and some by principle ingredient. This means neither book is especially good if you want to find a book to fit a particular function or to use a particular ingredient. The fact that both books are relatively short confirms that neither book may be very useful if you have room for only a very small cookbook collection. But if you can afford the money and space for a large cookbook collection, you will probably already have one or more volumes from Kennedy and Bayless, so why load yourself up with our spicy gals?
For most people, the answer is simply that they are great fun to read and their recipes get right to the point. If you are a foodie, you don't need another tutorial on technique. If you are a casual cook who entertains, you can go straight to the largely very concise recipes and get on with it. So, both books are easily worth the room they take up on your shelves.
As an aside, it is really interesting to see our gals' comments on the cooking talents of the Mexicans, which is very similar to Tony Bourdain's comments in `A Cook's Tour', where he states that almost all his line chefs at `Les Halle' are Mexican with practically no formal training, yet they are as capable as most French trained cooks.
If you really like cookbooks or you really like Mexican food, I recommend both of these books.
The Pictures Make This Book.......2005-07-22
The whole thing is illustrated in pen and ink, so you never have to worry if the food comes out like the picture or not. The pinto been looks like a bloated comma.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2005-06-04
I have made several recipes from this cookbook and have had loved them all. The salsas are now staples on my table as are the skirt steak, the flans (yum!) and the tortilla soup.
Many of the recipes appear on the menu at their restaurant, Border Grill. When prepared to specs, they taste just like the real thing. This makes me happy because Border Grill is one of my favorite restaurants.
Great Mexican cooking takes time, but as this cookbook shows us, it is not complicated. The book is beautiful, the recipes clear, and the results fabulous.
Easy Recipes, Complex Flavors.......2003-04-27
We love their restaurants and really love this book! The recipes are easy to follow and most are quite quick to make yet are complex in flavor. We particularly like their comments before each recipe that summarize the dish and make recommendations of other dishes that complement the flavors.
Excellent for the hobbyist chef, but not everyday.......2000-12-23
Mary Sue Miliken and Susan Feniger are two of the top chefs in LA. Their "Border Grill" in Santa Monica (4th and Broadway) is a noisy, splashy, foodie haven with superb drinks, a decent wine/beer list, and amazing food. Mesa Mexicana offers recipes that one might easily see on Border Grill's menu. For those of us who grew up equating Mexican food with Tex-Mex, Miliken and Feniger's inventive take on traditional Mexican cuisine is a revelation.
As a cookbook, Mesa Mexicana is interesting, has an attractive layout, and, by the minimal standards of the genre, is well-written. One would not want to use it on an everyday basis. Many of the recipes involve a fairly intensive amount of prep work and/or require specialized ingredients. For the hobbyist chef with access to a decent Mexican grocer and time on his/her hands, however, it is an inspiring and provocative work. Highly recommended on that qualified basis.

From Dirt To Turf, There Is Room For An Owner With Big Dreams.......2007-03-25
It may come as a surprise to casual fans of horse racing but the vast majority of owners at most tracks are from area farms. These race horse owners - who are oftentimes trainers of their racers - continue to be the foundation of the sport at the numerous mid-level tracks nationwide.
Authors Janet Del Castillo and Lois Schwartz takes the reader through the paces to get a Thoroughbred to the races; from building a track on a farm, the exercising of the runners and how to haul them to and from the track.
Other key issues covered include how to properly manage a budget to make a successful run in the sport, training techniques to properly prepare a racer and the variety of legal medications that are used on the athletes. There is a good directory of race tracks and organizations throughout the country.
The book is a great resource for those looking to take that step into the sport or for fans looking to understand an important - but oftentimes overlooked - facet of the industry.
The next winner of the Kentucky Derby is not be clocking workouts in someone's "backyard" training track, but such a runner just may be the next summertime star at a nearby track. Backyard Race Horse describes how that can be accomplished through proper financial and strategic planning.
Nice place to start........2007-01-18
This is a very comprehensive book which covers a broad range of topics relative to training race horses. Because of it's broad scope it does not cover the minute details of training as some other books might...but as a survey of the subject it does fine. It is written well and organized extemely well. It is a good book to start with and will provide the reader with enough background information to be able to ask intelligent questions relative to the books subject matter. A good value.

Backyard Race Horse.......2007-01-23
Great little handbook, especially helpful in the area of medications for racehorses. Very useful!
A very informative and excellent resource.......2005-03-09
I found this book to be honest, informative, and excellent. I don't own racehorses, but if I did I am sure Janet Del Castillo's method and advice would be excellent and very helpful. I especially was pleased with her remarks of "this is what works for me, but it more important that you find what works best for you and your horses". I find that refreshingly honest; many trainers seems to always say "this is the only right way, everything else is not" while Janet Del Castillo simply shares her experiences and offers ideas more than writing anything in concrete. I also like the explanation of what the various legal drugs used on racehorses can do to the horses.
I find the review of "a reader" to be a little odd. They remark that Janet Del Castillo "only had one big winner" so her methods are faulty and useless. However, realistically the fact that she had a stakes winner as well as managed to keep her family fed and taken care of by racing horses that lasted for years is outstanding! Only about 7% of ALL Thoroughbreds to reach the track ever compete at stakes levels, fewer still actually win them! The other 93% are Allowance and Claimers. Honestly, how many trainers even get 1 big horse? Aside from those employed or possessing a great deal of money (as in the millions of dollars) and can afford to buy horses for huge sums of money, most trainers never get a stakes horses. Why do you think the big names at the Kentucky Derby and other such races are always the same? They are the ones that can afford to pay the large entrance fees, purchase large groups of young horses to find that one good horse, and can discard the others. Most of the Thoroughbred industry cannot.
So I personally admire Janet Del Castillo and her methods: she races sound, tough horses that usually seem to pay for themselves and keep her in the clear as well! If I ever have the pleasure of owning a racehorse or two, I will definitely use her methods for my horses!
Backyard Racehorse.......2002-01-06
This is easily one of the greatest training books ever published. It teaches how to train your racehorses with both the horses and your best interest in mind at the same time. It argues clearly and teaches why the method of not overpushing horses and making them run by masking pain with medicine is stupid and offers viable options for trainers who still want to make money. It teaches that the greatest way to make money is to take care of the horse and let it rest when it needs to be cured for injuries instead of pushing it beyond its limits to eventual permanent lameness. One of my favorite portions was about 'carrotology', which illustrated that even racehorses deserve to be loved like a pleasure horse. This book also gives helpful advise to those not only in Thoroughbred racing, but barrel racing and QH racing. One of the greatest things about this book, though, is the fact that the methods described actually worked for the author. Kudos to Janet.
An excellent informative book.......2000-06-01
It takes an unbelieveable amount of time, effort, and money toget your racehorse across the finish line. Most racehorse owners turntheir animals and their money and unconditional control over to the racetrack trainer, usually to have the animal return to them injured, most permanently, within a 6 month period. Ms. Castillo, via this excellent book, provides an alternative in her own experience of training horses on her farm. The book is both a how to manual for the beginner and a comparative analysis for the experienced. Ms. Castillo takes you through her training, a to z in great detail. You may argue with her technique or you may question her methods, but I found the information provided invaluable and for myself inspirational to my own training efforts. Ms. Castillo relates how to overcome every obstacle an owner may face in training their own animals, and she is a welcome pioneer promoting her unique idea--instead of pouring money down the toilet with the local track trainer, a practice which ejects owners from the business usually within a couple of years, instead for those thousands and thousands of horse owners, train your own! It could hardly get any better than that.
very worthwhile.......2000-03-30
I respectfully differ with the last prior review. Back Yard Race Horse very truly does aim itself more toward the horse racing novice, but that seems to be an intent, rather than a fault. The book is just superb in its all inclusive information on every aspect of horse care, training, and the race track. And for the experienced trackster Ms. De Castillo at the very least will provide you with comparative information by which you may either agree or disagree or evaluate your own program. Backyard Race Horse additionally sets out a program for those who are unable to train at the racetrack, and as such, rather than being pretentious or pushing a program, merely sets out the backyard experience of its author. She shows how she did it, and demonstrates that it can be done. And finally, and most valuably Ms. De Castillo pioneers the benefits to horse racing of recruiting the hundreds of thousands of potential backyarders into the sport. This is an excellent book, well written, informative, and highly recommended.

inspiration.......2007-01-10
If you, like I, can make whatever you see, this is the book for you. It is approx 400 pages of photos. All of which are fantastic boxes (works of art). This book is a must for when you don't know what to make next. It oozes originality. One of the boxes was my inspiration for new kitchen cabinets!
Great source for insperation.......2006-08-19
Great collection to make you think and to inspire you to "build out of the box".
Lots of quality photos.......2006-08-11
Very nice book, lots of great looking boxes. Great for new ideas (woodworker) or if you are looking for something special. Only downfall, is most do not offer a picture of the inside of box.
Thinking outside the box!.......2005-09-13
I have always been fascinated by boxes. An avid puzzle enthusiast,I am always on the lookout for what I call puzzle boxes. These are boxes that have a secret method required to open. They are designed with hidden panels, magnets, bars, bearings, and everything imaginable that keeps them from being opened until the "Puzzle" is figured out.Unfortunately, there are no boxes of this sort in the book;though there are many that could be adapted to include a locking device or mechanism.Design wise these boxes are beautiful artistic objects and a joy to behold. It would be an even greater thrill to be able to pick them up and open them.
All the other reviews are very good and warn that what you get with this book is a picture of the box ,its overall dimensions ,color, some info on the material;but no construction methods. Not that there is any suggestion that construction methods or details are provided, one might think they are.In other words;what you see is what you get.
Anyone who designs and makes interesting boxes should find this book a real gem,and a storehouse of design ideas.
To someone who is interested in buying boxes like these, but not really interested in making them, you might have some success in contacting the artists. In addition to that,I attend a lot of Art and Craft Shows and without fail there are always a few artists who are selling wooden boxes similar to these.Common are inlaids, stacking, burls, sectionals, jewellery, chess, games, and at times I come across "puzzle boxes".
A beautiful book.......2005-05-29
What a wonderful and varied collection of boxes! This is a treasure for wood-lovers or for anyone who loves beauty. As with 400 Polymer Clay Designs, it has so many beautiful images, I was not able to view it in one setting. The pictures made me smile and "wow," and made me want to pick up, feel and explore the boxes. Don't expect box-making instructions - this book is a gallery only, but of the highest order. I can't recommend it too highly.

PRISM Workbook.......2001-08-04
I am Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Miami, Florida, and I have been using this workbook for years. I have used it with juvenile delinquents, sex offenders, and domestic violence offenders. It is an excellent way to engage resistant clients and incorporate goals and measure successful treatment completion. I have also used it with families who need to learn to communicate and with stress management. I use it when teaching graduate counseling classes. The chapter on Active Listening is is a practical way to teach person-centered therapy and gives the students a chance to role play.
The groups and activities of the Prism Social Skills program.......1998-10-16
This workbook does an outstanding job of creating and organizing, innovative, multi-modal groups for working on Social Skills with troubled youth. It incorporates hands on activities, role-plays, and ends each group with a guided relaxation exercise. A great approach for reaching children with various degrees of abilities and different learning styles.

ODE TO A IRISH REVOLUTIONARY SOCIALIST.......2006-04-06
A word. They tell a story about James Connolly that just before the start of action in Easter, 1916 he told the members of the Irish Citizen's Army (almost exclusively workers, by the way) that if the uprising was successful to keep their guns handy. More work with them might be necessary against the nationalist allies of the moment organized as the Irish Volunteers. The Volunteers was mainly a petty bourgeois formation and had no intention of fighting for a Socialist Republic. True story or not, I think that gives a pretty good example of the strategy and tactics to be used in colonial and third world struggles by the working class. Would that the Chinese Communists in the 1920's and other colonial and third world liberation fighters since then had paid heed to that strategic concept.
James Connolly, June 5, 1868-May 12, 1916, was of Scottish Irish stock. He was born in Edinburgh of immigrant parents. The explicit English colonial policy which created the Irish diaspora produced many such immigrants from benighted Ireland to England, America, Australia and the far flung parts of the world. Many of these immigrants left Ireland under compulsion of banishment. Deportation was a standard English response in the history of the various "Troubles' from Cromwell's time on.
Connolly, like many another Irish lad left school for a working life at age 11. The international working class has produced many such self-taught and motivated leaders. Despite the lack of formal education he became one of the preeminent left-wing theorists of his day in the pre- World War I international labor movement. In the class struggle we do not ask for diplomas, although they help, but commitment to the cause of the laboring masses. Again, like many an Irish lad Connolly joined the British Army, at the age of 14. In those days the British Army provided one of the few ways of advancement for an Irishman who had some abilities. As fate would have it he was stationed in Dublin. I believe the English must ruse the day they let Brother Connolly near weapons and near Dublin. As the old Irish song goes- ` Won't Old Mother England be Surprised'.
By 1892 Connolly was an important figure in the Scottish Socialist Federation which, by the way, tended to be more militant and more Celtic and less enamored of parliamentarianism than its English counterpart. The failure to gather in the radical Celtic elements was a contributing factor to the early British Communist Party's sterility. Most of the great labor struggles of the period cam from the leadership in Scotland and Ireland. Connolly became the secretary of the Federation in 1895. In 1896 he left the army and established the Irish Socialist Republican Party. The name itself tells the program. Ireland at that time was essentially a classic English colony so to take the name Republican was to spit in the eye of the English. Even today the English have not been able to rise to the political level of a republic. Despite Cromwell's valiant attempt and no thanks to the British Labor Party's policies this is sadly the case today. All militants can and must support this call- Abolish the monarchy, House of Lords and the state Church of England.
In England Connolly was active in the Socialist Labor Party that split from the moribund, above-mentioned Social Democratic Federation in 1903. During the period before the Easter uprising he was heavily involved in the Irish labor movement and acted as the right hand man to James Larkin in the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. In 1913 when Larkin led a huge strike in Dublin but was forced to leave due to English reprisals Connolly took over. It was at that time that Connolly founded the Irish Citizens Army as a defense organization of armed and trained laboring men against the brutality of the dreaded Dublin Metropolitan Police. Although only numbering about 250 men at the time their political goal also became to establish an independent and socialist Ireland.
Connolly stood aloof from the leadership of the Irish Volunteers, the nationalist formation based on the middle classes. He considered them too bourgeois and unconcerned with Ireland's economic independence. In 1916 thinking they 'were merely posturing', and unwilling to take decisive action against England, he attempted to goad them into action by threatening to send his Irish Citizens Army against the British Empire alone, if necessary. This alarmed the members of the more militant Irish Republican Brotherhood, who had already infiltrated the Volunteers and had plans for an insurrection as well. In order to talk Connolly out of any such action, the IRB leaders, including Tom Clarke and Patrick Pearse, met with Connolly to see if an agreement could be reached. During the meeting the IRB and the ICA agreed to act together at Easter of that year.
When the Easter Rising occurred on April 24, 1916, Connolly was Commandant of the Dublin Brigade, and as the Dublin brigade had the most substantial role in the rising, he was de facto Commander in Chief. Following the surrender he was executed by the British for his role in the uprising. Although he was so badly injured in the fighting that he was unable to stand for his execution he was shot sitting in a chair. The Western labor movement, to its detriment, no longer produces enough such militants as Connolly (and Larkin, for that matter). Learn more about this important socialist thinker and fighter. ALL HONOR TO HIS MEMORY. Chocky Ar La.

A Great book by a former labor organizer & revolutionary.......1999-12-19
Not too many in America recognize the name of James Connolly, but before the 1916 Uprising in Dublin he was a labor organizer here in America with the IWW. This book is a collection of writings that provide some insight into the political thought of the day. You must begin this journey with the understanding that the use of the language is a little different from now.
