Elegantly interweaving anecdotal with philosophical meditations, Ricoeur recounts his relationships with some of the twentieth century's greatest figures, such as Heidegger, Jaspers, and Eliade. He also shares his views on French philosophers and explains his tumultuous relationship with Jacques Lacan. And while expressing his deepest respect for the works of Claude Lévi-Strauss and Michel Foucault, Ricoeur reserves his greatest admiration for the narratologist Algirdas Julien Greimas.
Ricoeur also explores the relationship between the philosophical and religious domains, attempting to reconcile the two poles in his thought. Wonderful !!!.......1998-12-05
What a wonderful book!! Ricoeur talks about his life, his journey through philosophy, his thoughts, feelings and much more. He talks about his encounters with some of our centuries great philosophers, such as Heidegger, Jaspers, Marcel and Gadamer. From his childhood to his experience as a prisioner during W.W.II; talks about his teaching years in both Europe and USA (he makes an excelent analysis of the two cultures). A must read for anyone interested in philosophy, ethics, history, phenomenology, psychanalysis, religion, art, education, politics, european and american culture. A great introduction to his work and life. Very pleasant book. I highly recomend it!!

This wonderful book shows parents and teachers alike how to develop reward plans for different situations, what works, what doesn't work, and the book even includes pullouts and printables. I am buying a copy for my children's teachers because we feel this book is good for both the kids and the teachers.

As a clinical psychologist and parent of a 6 year old son, I would recommend this book highly to fellow parents, or professionals. It helped me get a fresh perspective on some common behavior problems (like getting kids dressed & out in the morning!) and provided many creative, fun, and positive solutions. It's quite liberating to turn occasions for nagging into games that foster independence and achievement. The book provides many specific ideas, charts and coupons that can be copied and used. I even gave my son's first grade teacher a copy of the book as a gift. She used several of the ideas with great success!

As a practicing clinical psychologist and parent of a 6 year old son, I would recommend this book highly. Even with previous training in the field, the book helped me gain a fresh, creative, and positive perspective on common everyday behavior problems. I even gave a copy to my son's teacher, who implemented several of the ideas with great success. It was a really great gift. The ideas in the book are specific (charts and reward coupons included!!), effective and fun.
Helping Parents: A Psychologist's View.......2004-04-12

Dr. Virginia Shiller has addressed the dilemna of adapting effective behavioral techniques to the "wonderful idiosyncratic nature of human beings and the ways that they interact with their environments." Her method is to teach parents how to enter into dialogues with their children so that the Reward Plans they develop are customized to their own families and so that both kids and parents are motivated to give them a try. Instead of simply giving the adults rules to follow, she provides explanations of the underlying principles so that the parents themselves can learn how to address common behavioral problems in a caring and creative manner. Specific examples are given of such common battlegrounds as struggles over bedtimes, picking on siblings, and homework. She describes how to use humor and creativity in order to enlist the cooperation of the children, so that they can become able to experience the rewards of self-control. I liked the emphasis on empowering rather than controlling. In addition, there are lots of cute charts, games, and tokens that are fun to use with kids.
I especially liked Dr. Shiller's discussion of the differences between bribes and rewards. I have already used that in talking with parents. (Though this book is written so that it can be used by the average parent, there is something in it for experienced clnicians, too.) While Dr. Shiller explains the principles in a manner which could instruct a psychology student, she also includes a level of subtlety which is interestting to people who have been doing this for a while. This is a useful and excellent book.
A Lifesaver for a Frustrated Parent.......2003-06-13
This book came out a just the right moment for me. I had been having terrible difficulty with my older daughter Maya's bedtime, which was making my life miserable. I heard about this book and how it can help frustrated parents like myself and decided to give it a try. The book is very nicely presented and easy to read, and above all else, extremely practical. The author gives examples of typical problems faced by parents and offers sample "plans" for how to deal with them. For really busy people like myself there are pullout charts and other materials that are ready-to-use. I found one example that was very similar to my situation and used the information provided to develop a plan to get my daughter into bed at a reasonable hour. I couldn't believe how well it worked! I've already picked out the next behavior problem we're going to work on. I highly recommend this book to parents who are looking for a positive, common-sense approach to dealing with their kids' difficult behaviors.

Fun with food.......2006-02-18
Through my job in the kitchen appliance industry, I was lucky enough to see Bob Blumer do his thing in a very intimate (about 10 people) setting. From the moment he showed up wearing an AC/DC t-shirt and a pair of outrageous chef's pants, I knew this was going to be a lot more fun than the typical Food Network cooking shows(except maybe maybe Giada's Everyday Italian...but that's for different reasons).
Besides tasting great, the foods he prepared were just downright funny! He was very personable and had a great sense of humor which is reflected throughout this entire book.
I wasn't going to give this book 5 stars simply because these are just not foods you can prepare on any sort of a regular basis. They are mostly meant to be...for lack of a beeter way to describe it....different. But I reconsidered and gave it 5 stars anyway because it's just so damn funny and so damn original!
If you are going to a party, get-together or anytype of social event where food will be served, and you want your offering to be the talk of the moment...this is the book for you. Even if you're not a great cook or don't do such a hot job preparing these bites, the presentation alone will make you the hit! Check it out!
GREAT NEW FOODS!.......2005-12-13
I tried the smores shooters, and coconut shrimp popsicles, the sauce on the shrimp popsicles tasted great like something you would get in a resteraunt.I also tried the bang bang drummettes, and the inside out BLTs which tasted great. Living in Colorado I enjoyed the smores shooters as they are a great treat to have before you go snowboarding!
Artist Still Playing With His Food with Amuse-Bouche!.......2004-09-15
Teasers as warmup course, or appetizer feast, here is consummate surreal gourmet providing the inspiration with about fifty recipes composing sections on: fish, meat, fowl, veggies, sweets.
This continues his strong past of imaginative food with stylish twists of humor and fun with food. Try the likes of: Fish Cakes (salmon cupcakes with dill mashed potato icing); Cocktail Dates (bacon-wrapped parmesan-stuffed dates); Cowboy Cookies (chile-crusted tenderloin between carmelized yam slices); Inside Out BL's (bacon, arugula, and goat cheese sandwiched between fried tomato slices);Knuckle Sandwich (nutella, hazelnuts and sauteed pears on toasted pound cake).
Add to all this suggested menus, brief primer and notes oon frying and advance-prep ingredient handling, and suggested menus.
This is fun food, more lighthearted but serious food as well along the lines of Gale Gand's "Just A Bite" or her partner's Rick Tramonto's "Amuse Bouche."

Seeing Outback Australia - the hard way!.......2002-04-19
A well written and easy to read tale of the first packhorse trip down the Bicentennial Trail - the spidery path that runs along the spine of Australia. No mean feat, a journey equivalent to Seattle to Mexico City through some of the most remote of Downunder's extensive wilderness. Told with humour and an eye on frailties both equine and human it details the courage and perseverance of a young Sharon Roberts and husband Ken as they confront everything from crocodile infested rainforests to baking waterless plains, while managing a sometimes reluctant but always bold group of horses. But more than a horse story it's a dashing good read, which the armchair traveller and the non-horse enthusiast can enjoy alike. For horse lovers it is a how-to guide to modern packhorse travel. Highly recommended.

Great Gardening Book.......2000-03-28
This book is a great source of gardening information. It starts with garden design including a nice color chart and covers just about anything you can think of from pruning your trees to starting a lawn, soil testing, seed starting, tools you will need. It is very well written. You don't need to be an expert to understand it. The pictures are beautiful and it includes many, many useful diagrams such as how to test your soil to how to build a trellis. If you enjoy gardening this is a great book to have.

Best first book to read about depression .......2004-12-28
If you can only read one book to help you understand your depression or that of someone you know, make it this one.
Is This Right For You? Tolstoy or Hemmingway?.......2000-06-24
First of all, one must say that Dr. Papolos has written a very comprehensive book about depression. There are plenty of sections that are written in a non-technical way. He made sure the symptoms of the various disorders and sub-categories of them were outlined right out of DSM-IV, and the information about financial problems that accompany serious bipolar or depressive disorders is very complete, pragmatic, and helpful. The explanations concerning medications is somewhat incomplete but nonetheless practical and useful (especially the charts). It may have been better to have focused more on the medications themselves rather than their history. Some of the paragraphs on side-effects seemed redundant to the point that it became "filler" material. I was disappointed, for example, that he did not give a thorough explanation of clonazepam, an oft-used sedative, while he devotes pages on medical history, especially lithium research.
Certainly the technical chapters are hard to understand; but then again, that might be exactly what you're looking for: a detailed, cmprehensive analysis of the biochemical aspects of depression and mania as well as the evidence suggesting genetic vulnerability. It may even help the "lay person" by easing his or her anxiety about taking medication by explainin how exactly the pills work.
There were two major disappointments, however. First, the book minimized the issue of adolescent depression and/or mania by dedicating only ten pages to it. I do have a bias, but any good text about depression or mania, unless the cover page explicitly states the audience to which the book was addressing, must dedicate a great amount of energy to mental illness in children and even a section solely for teenagers who may or may have known friends suffering from such disorders. Psychiatry depends heavily on risk reduction and crisis prevention because "treatment" per-se may not be able to be administered in time. Second, although bipolar disorders may have more severe symptoms, the book seemed to allocate too much of its pages to mania instead of depression. Both are equally dangerous and painful, yet Dr. Papolos seemed to focus a little too much on mania (dysphoric or elated), leaving patients with unipolar depression feeling somewhat left out. That is not to say they were ignored but that there existed an unfortunate imbalance.
Overall, however, I learned much about bipolar and unipolar disorders. I still have yet to find a book about personality disorders, but this is definitely one of the better works concerning mental illness. Moreover, Dr. Papolos includes a great possibility for another updated version which I am greatly interested in. However, these feelings arise only because the book satisfies most of my needs. To many, "Overcoming Depression" may not be the right pill.
I must have missed something.......2000-05-03
If you are trying to work through your depression, then this book isn't for you. For the common layperson, this book is too technical. It tells about the history of lithium, it's full of charts, diagrams of the brain, and statistics. There is a whole section on having someone committed and costs. I'm sure this information may be valuable to some people, but the book should be titled something else. I don't see how it benefits someone "Overcoming Depression". Most of the pertinent information about this illness can be found in other resources. Save your money.
If You Can Only Buy One Book On This Subject - Buy This One.......1999-05-13
This is the first book my wife, Melissa, and I bought after I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (manic-depression) in 1989. Today, with its newly revised and updated version, "Overcoming Depression" is still my number one recommendation to all my readers.
Education is the key to fighting these brain disorders and the stigma that is associated with mental illness. "Overcoming Depression" is invaluable because it teaches the sufferer and the supporter everything they need to know about diagnosis, treatment, coping skills, research and even recovery - and it is written so anyone can easily understand it.
Melissa and I give this book credit for saving my life and our marriage. It saved my life because it taught us what we needed to do to beat my bipolar disorder. It saved our marriage because it taught Melissa to understand my brain disorder. This understanding allowed her to be more patient with me until I found a treatment to end my suffering, and it taught her how to best support me during that nonstop five-year struggle.
If you can only afford to buy one book about depression and bipolar disorder, I encourage you to buy this one. Again, I recommend it to all my readers and anyone dealing with these brain disorders - including both sufferers and supporters.
The one book I'd like to buy for every person who loves me........1998-03-05
Over the past months I have read many books about depression and bipolar disorder, including the 1992 version of this book. Out of all the titles I have read, this is the one that I feel would be most helpful to my loved ones in understanding what goes on inside my body and my head. It uses simple language, and all information is presented in a factual yet empathetic manner that will allow anyone at any age or reading level from adolescent to elderly to grasp.
