A good book for the winter reading list. I pictured Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as the two main characters here. No, not that movie, just a interesting Vietnam Vet mystery novel. Check it out.

Focus - Montana Library Association Monthly magazine
Prisoners of Flight soars
This first novel is set outside Glacier National Park. Four characters, and they truly are characters; two compadres from the Vietnam War and two young sisters; set up camp in a small cabin. The first chapter reveals which of the four has tragically died, then returns to the beginning of the events. This is the hook to keep one reading, but the ideas, the issues, the biases, the language, and beautiful imagery are often so uncommonly worded as to be especially notable.
It's a special treat for anyone who knows something about animals and fishing and nature and leaves the reader wondering - what has civilization gained with the invention of the cell phone? It might have saved these four a lot of trouble - but then there would be no story! And this is a story the reader has to think about. It's refreshing to have to think about fiction. It's refreshing to read original fiction from a local. This title makes an excellent selection for book clubs as there are many perspectives to discuss, which different readers will identify with in different ways.
Gustafson is a Conrad, Montana native with dozens of short stories published in many magazines such as Big Sky Journal.

PRISONERS OF FLIGHT, by Sid Gustafson, Publisher: The Permanent Press, New York
We wince, we keep reading. This first novel by a Montana doctor of veterinary medicine moves with compelling, sometimes beautiful, and sometimes brutal, imagery. Shelley is famously blunt for opening his elegiac tribute to Keats, "I weep for Adonais -- he is dead."
But here's Gustafson, starting off this strange tale of bonding in the Northwest wilderness with "Henson's dead." Hen Son, part Blackfeet Indian, part Cree, had his name anglicized by the military. Later on, what Vietnam did not destroy, Captain Henson lost to a freak fishing accident and an inability to reconnect with the world of civilization -- an eye, his wife, his ranching business, though not his love of nature or a capacity for deep friendship with the narrator, Dr. Sling Roop, a veterinarian.
Their lives go back to training days in the Air Force Academy and then, after being shot down over the China Sea, to time spent at the Hanoi "Hilton," where they were tortured. Prisoners of flight, they become prisoners of those memories. Ironically, they also find escape from the past in flying.
Prisoners of Flight begins with a brief present-tense prologue by Sling, who is airborne, but as he recalls Henson's recent death, and "clouds bleed up the setting sun," his judgment falters and the plane goes down. Injured, stunned, memories invade, and the stream of consciousness that ensues constitutes the actual story that will eventually connect with the prologue and explain how Henson died. The memories are many-layered but center on the recent weeks when Sling and Henson lived together in the wilderness after they flew blind and crashed in a desolate part of northern Montana. Within minutes of that crash, two college-age girls appeared, having seen the plane fall. They are twins, running away from an unhappy home and searching for their dog, who bounded into the forest. The situation is bizarre, but Gustafson avoids the expected and with great skill pulls their stories together, showing how they are all prisoners of flight. Essentially, however, the novel is a kind of love story between Sling and Hen, two maimed souls whose intimacy allows them to communicate with subtle gestures and code taps, and whose fierce need to escape into a pure, albeit dangerous sky, speaks volumes about the psychological and physical damage wrought by the Vietnam war, the addictions it bred, and the irreparable social discontent it generated.
It's amazing what Gustafson packs in, including lore about veterinary medicine, some of it as discomforting as it is true, about what even the most compassionate animal lover has to undergo interning and then in practice. War made Sling "an animal" and drove him to drugs, but another war drew him to alcohol -- the losing battle against "stupid heartless people" who insisted he put their healthy pets to sleep. He loses wife, son, daughter, and home. Nonetheless, he is an admirable, decent human being, and readers will lament the passing of his kind: Machines? Not for him. They don't know "the tone, the surge of capillaries, the pulsing blood." People today "insist on machines--numeric proof, undeniable proof. They don't trust a doctor's touch, not anymore. I'm on my way out."
In the wilderness, with Henson, Sling finds the insecurity he needs to slow him down and allow him to be a fully sensate being. "Living here is a ceremony, replete with sacrifice and rapture." Together, in nurturing mode, Sling and Henson teach the girls what it means to live and face death. Yet, for all his instinctive and intuitive smarts, Sling knows he is not an animal, that man cannot live in the wilderness, that flight has limits. This is a haunting book. As summer deepens and city folk look to nature, to the outback, to so-called roughing it, it is refreshing to come across a literary account of The Real Thing -- so graphic, so poetically rendered.

A Knockout First Novel.......2003-06-24
Sid Gustafson's "Prisoners of Flight" weaves a tale of harmonious polarity between today's youth and Vietnam's generation. The disparate and troubled characters meet in a perilous Montana wilderness, thrown together by shared acts of incaution. The four protagonists (soon five, soon tragically four again) antagonize, then resolve their personal demons while struggling to survive the oncoming winter. Written in an exquisitely uncommon style, "Prisoners" provides an enlightening and delightful read remindful of Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye." Thank you Dr. Gustafson!
All American Wilderness Novel.......2003-06-24
This is Montana fiction at its finest, a fine story about two former POW's stranded in the wilderness. The middle-aged men are seeking redemption for their overly examined lives since their release from the Hanoi Hilton and find a plethora of revealing enlightenment with the help and encouragement of two sisters, a dog named Hope, and a young Native American in a wild and introspective romp in The Great Bear Wilderness of the Northern Rocky Mountains. The narrator, a beleagered veterinarian, has a voice that is right on, unique and lyrical, perfect pitch, making the novel a can't put-down read, and re-read... I can't seem to stop reading the book, continuing to pick up pertinent details and observations of America's wilderness, and why it is so important to preserve and respect.

Book Description
Preface
This is a true story/biography of one Vietnam Veteran and his survival after Viet nam, and his return to America from a very unpopular war. And dealing with PTSD; (not even time can heal.)
Returning to his native homeland and finding a country where the people were bit-terly battling one another over the Vietnam war. Where only about 18 to 20 percent of the people maintained that the U.S. involvement was right and that 65 to 70 percent believed it was wrong.
The American people were very disrespectful towards the Vietnam Veteran. The Viet-nam Veteran was treated worse than any other veteran returning from other earlier wars.
The American people saw the Vietnam Veterans as perpetrators and they made no distinction between the brave warriors who fought in Vietnam, and the war itself. The American public made the Vietnam Veteran a disgrace and the draft dodger the real hero. Including a lot of veterans from past wars, who, for some reason were jealous of the Vietnam Vets.
Today the sympathy for the Vietnam Veteran has increased, and public respect for the Veteran is gaining at a very fast pace.
The Americans now think that most Vietnam Veterans have PTSD, emotional problems and suffer from lack of jobs, discrimination, alcohol, drug abuse, alienation, and lack of purpose.
This true story is of one American Vietnam Veteran who survived the bitterness, rejection, discrimination, alcohol, alienation, PTSD, emotional problems, and found a purpose in his life, along with success. His real war was not in Vietnam, but here in the United States of America, covering a life span of some 35 years and counting.
This Veteran has come out of the closet, as one would say; to stand up and be counted as a real survivor of PTSD, which will never go away. One learns to deal with it on a daily basis,
...and survive.
Book Description
For some of the world's great thinkers, including Aristotle, Aquinas, and Hegel, philosophy is a vast system of fixed, capital-T Truth for humankind to discover, explore and comprehend. For others, even among those with philosophies as diverse as William James and Ludwig Wittgenstein, philosophy is simply a tool, or a process for ascertaining individual factual truths specific to a given time and place. It is often said that if you ask any ten philosophers to define their subject, you're likely to get ten different answers. Here, presented for non-specialist readers, is an easy-to-understand survey of ideas put forth by 100 important philosophers, from the pre-Socratics of ancient Greece to the analytic philosophers of the present day. Each thinker is summarized in a single illustrated page, or in many instances, in a two-page spread. Each entry includes the philosopher's birth and death dates, titles of major works, major influences, a capsule biographical sketch, and a brief summary of his or her most important ideas. In addition to philosophers in our own Western tradition, readers will find Chinese sages, including Confucius and Lao-tzu, the Indian Buddhist philosopher Ngrjuna, and thinkers representing other cultures. Just a few of the 100 important thinkers represented in this book are:
- Plato
- Aristotle
- Augustine of Hippo
- Roger Bacon
- Thomas Aquinas
- Thomas Hobbes
- John Locke
- Rene Descartes
- Baruch Spinoza
- Immanuel Kant
- G.W.F. Hegel
- Friedrich Nietzsche
- William James
- Ludwig Wittgenstein
- Martin Heidegger
- Jean-Paul Sartre
- Alfred Jules Ayer
- Willard V.O. Quine
- Thomas Kuhn
- Donald Davidson
- and many others
The text is enhanced with more than 250 illustrations and a glossary of philosophical terms.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for philosophy beginners!.......2007-08-03
I bought this book after taking an introductory philosophy course in college. I had a deep interest in the subject, but not a very strong background. If you are like me, then this book will be a great starting point for you. Do not expect to find any great analysis of any philosophical theories, or even any opinions on the theories of the various philosophers. In fact, some of the philosophers are covered very briefly, and we are given only the most basic information about them (where they were born, where they studied, what kind of family they came from, where they died, etc.). However, having said that, this book WILL provide you with the basic knowledge of the most influential philosophers so that you may embark on your greater journey into the world of philosophy. It clearly deliniates the beginning of philosophical thought and it's transition to modern philosophy and as most reviewers have stated, it is very well structured and organized. Every major philosopher that you have ever read about/heard of is in this book. I strongly encourage any and all readers interested in a philosophy background to purchase this book!
A visually-pleasing and organized reference to some major philosophers.......2007-05-14
This is the kind of book you - as a philosophy lover, I assume - can keep on your centerpiece or desk somewhere easily accessible for reference. It's very visually pleasing and organized, so you can spend hours reading about this and that philosopher. Its limitation lies in the explanation of the philosophers' views, which summarizes a lot and as a result you cannot hope to learn much from it content-wise. If your goal is to learn some philosopher's views well, this is not the book for you, but if you want a quick reference for philosophers' time periods, historical heritage, theoretical orientation, etc., it is great.
Conclusion: a good pick if its purpose is understood as a reference, as a poster noted below. The point is to talk about the people rather than the ideas. It will not engage you in deep ideas, but will tell you a bit about a great many thinkers.
plato.......2006-07-07
please don't think this book has any value. I haven't bought or read it -- it just appeared in my Amazon.com recommendations list, but the underlying concept of it as being an introduction to philosophy is simply wrong. Read Plato as a starting point. He'll challenge you, and you'll take away more from the "socratic dialogs" than reading this type of book over and over again.
A good starting point and linker.......2006-07-02
Well, I can't pretend that I understood it. I didn't understand "Sophie's World" either. I prefer the format of this lay textbook over the device of the bizarre story of Sophie's World as a structure for didacticism though I admit the bizarre stuff was there to illustrate the philosophical points. I read "One Hundred Philosophers" quickly to see what was available in it but would need to study it with additional texts to go in- depth and attempt to understand the actual philosophy.
I bought the book because it links together disjointed pieces of information. I think it's a good starting point and I intend to use it as a reference book rather than having to go on the net to find the same information.
It's amazing that I'm encountering beliefs out there that I've been reading about in the book and can easily refer to for discussions. There's some surprising individuals in the book to read about, real eye-openers. There are also patterns of biography depending on the era cited e.g. starting out as a theological scholar and getting side-tracked into philosophy.
Some of the woman philosphers' lives make sad reading, early deaths and in one case matyrdom. In contrast, some of the men lived to great ages.
As well though, I saw a pattern of philosophers being repeatedly exiled, tortured, imprisoned and executed for their beliefs though this isn't happening with the latest Continental and Anglo-American ones featured! I found this book so worthwhile I felt inspired to buy one for my 14 year old neice as a great introduction to the valuable and deep subject of philosophy.
Funnily enough, I bought it as one of a selection of books available in the tea-room at work among the usual recipe and typical prosaic lifestyle selection. It was a great buy for $NZ12 (New Zealand).
Very nice reference!.......2005-12-10
This book is a very nice quick reference, and should be used perhaps like a dictionary. Influences and influenced thinkers are clearly presented, along with each philosopher's main interests and quotes or sometimes "in a nutshell" summaries of the philosophy.
So far I only have one minor criticism: Peter King doesn't like to capitalize the word "god" (as if it changes its metaphysical status). When it is clearly indicating a singular pronoun in the text, it remains uncapitalized. Maybe he was trying to convey that there's a plurality of gods, but clearly some of these philosophers thought of a singular God, and it should be capitalized as all pronouns are. I'm not sure of Mr. King's motivation here, I can only guess he was trying to be inoffensive to non-Christian religions?
Anyhow, don't let that put you off. This is definitely a book worth ordering or picking up - you will find it imminently useful!

Alternative healing.......2007-08-09
I was impressed with the research that Mr. Young has done, however I was hoping it was different than all the other aromatherphy books that I had bought, but it was just pretty simple. I really am looking for something more comprehensive than this and thought it would be more like a text book. There is allot of sick people out there and we need a book that really goes in depth about healing the patient. I haven't purchased any of the oils that he produces but plan on trying them, I was impressed that he talked about the different levels of distillation, and how much the impact on even just when you harvest the oils and the changes that occur when you do that at different times. Also he talks about the energy of the person involved with the oils and that was impressive when I had just planted flower seeds in my yard and the side of the sidewalk that I did has plenty of flowers but the one my daughter did only has a few and it is quite funny looking but evident of what he was saying about the energy of the person.

The BEST essential oil book out there!.......2007-01-12
This book is written by the founder of Young Living Essential Oils, Gary Young. However, it is NOT "brand specific" information. It includes scientific information about essential oils, but better yet ... it tells you which oil(s) to use for specific maladies!
For instance, I have a mole on my face and do NOT want to have it surgically removed. I consulted this book, and found the recommendation to use Oregano oil on it. I have been using the oil on it for almost one week, and have started to see a change in the look and feel of the mole. NOTHING I have tried over the years has done this for it!
(as of 10/01/07: I have been using the Oregano oil on my moles for a while now. I have very fair skin, and am allergic/sensitive to many things. This oil is no exception. I CANNOT put the oil on my moles every day. I have to put it on maybe every 3 or 4 days. The skin around the moles becomes red and itchy. Also, the moles tend to ooze clear liquid. Be careful with the oils and USE THEM AS DIRECTED!! So far about 3/4 of my largest mole is GONE. By using the oil approx. 1x per week I have dissolved the moles by a significant amount, and the dark color is either gone or much lighter!)
The book is easy to use, very informative, and I consult it almost daily for advice. I give it 2 thumbs and 2 toes up! Excellent reference!
The facts and powers of essential oils.......2006-10-30
I have learned so much and I still am. I am amazed,in absolute awe on how potent and powerful the healing properties of PURE essential oils are. The frequencies of our bodies have the same frequencies as the blood of the plants so it can be immediately absorbed into our cells! These researched PURE oils have a huge significant impact on our well being and health.
This book is extremely valuable and should be in every home that would like to learn a new and healthier way of living.
Excellent Source for Novice and Expert.......2006-02-26
This is a well written, easily understood resource for anyone interested in essential oils and their uses. I bought this book after reading an article in a magazine by the author. I have since bought a couple of other essential oil books and looked at others at a bookstore and none of them came close to providing the usable information that this book does. If you are interested in this subject, don't waste your money on other books, this one has everything you need to better your health in a safe, natural way.
Disappointing !.......2006-02-01
The majority of the information in this large book is already published in this authors EODR: Essential Oil Desk Reference. Very little new information and thus it should have been printed in a small volume or pamphlet as an addendum to the EODR. Much better to spend your money on the origianl and very valuable reference manual (the EODR) for all those using the Young Living Essential Oils. Only the "true believers" and followers can or will use this current volume.

I made wonderful sour fermented dills after I read this book.......2001-03-03
I found this book in the local library several years ago. I read it from cover to cover. I just had to buy it! The front part of the book covers theory in detail. I learned all about fermenting pickles (full sours and half sours, etc.) There is information on making your own sauerkraut. Most of the recipes are for non-fermented pickles. There are recipes covering a wide variety of vegetables. An excelent book for both recipes and basic information on both fermented and non fermented pickles. I have tried many of the recipes.

Excellent book if you want to know it all!.......2007-10-08
Packed full of easy to understand information. Not only does it answer all of your questions for animal care but lots of it pertains to humans as well! I highly recommend this book!
A great book for pet owners.......2007-10-05
This is a very useful book for dog owners, especially people who have never had pets before. The doctor offers many suggestions for natural remedies for health problems with your pet.
Medicinal Use.......2007-09-13
I found this book very informative and useful when searching for holistic ingredients and supplements for my dog who has Addison's Disease. There are not many books out there that are user friendly with this disease, but this book made it very simple with highlighted notes and page reference numbers for other suggestions. I really liked the fact that this book had a list and explanation of all ingredients found in typical dog food products. The herbal remedies where a wonderful addition to my research and the book gave me definitions to all the products that were mentioned. Great book overall, and I would recommend it to anyone that is searching for holistic remedies for their pets or just for herbal and product information.
A wealth of information.......2007-06-27
First I would like to say I have never met Dr. Shawn and am writing
this because I am so pleased with his book. With the recent food scare
I was looking for a reliable source for a homemade food recipe. I live
in Dallas which is near where Dr. Shawn practices. He has written
articles for The Dallas Morning News and I've heard people speak
favorably of him on more than one occasion. I'm new to holistic care
and was a bit skeptical thinking I would be admonished for using
conventional medical care and products. This has not the case with his
book at all. Much of the information is just that, information for you
to make better choices for your pet. It is very well written and packed
with good information on supplements, herb, diet etc. I love this book
and have even learned that there are probably some supplements that I
could add to my diet. I would encourage everyone to buy this book as
it is so easy to read, well formatted, and full of information that
will help me give my dog the healthcare he deserves.

One of the best resources.......2007-06-17
This book is really useful for learning the uses and effects of different herbs and supplements. One of the best things about this book is how it's organized. One section lists ailments, each one with a description, treatment options, and listing of natural remedies. A second section lists all the natural remedies, what they can be used to treat, and how they work. I didn't find the nutrition section very useful, but I would definitely recommend the book for it's extensive ailment and remedy listings.

Customer Reviews:
Less than impressed.......2006-03-10
This book has a lot of funiture plans in it but the plans are too small with some descriptions/lengths/etc being so small you needed a magnifying glass to read them. Too many details crammed into one drawing. No color pictures. I wasn't impressed.
Excellent resource for advaned projects........2001-04-08
As with most of Gottshall's books, the projects are not for the beginner. Good knowledge of woodworking processes are necessary to build these beautiful period pieces. The finishes advocated in the book are dated but are completely appropriate for the pieces involved. Pieces of this quality deserve finishes that are reversible by our heirs and that would exclude a lot of the modern water-based and polyurethane finishes.
A valuable addition to your collection.......2000-06-30
Excellent book and a valuable reference for anyone interested in reproduction furniture. The section on finishing techniques is a bit dated, but the real value is the detailed drawings of reproduction pieces he built. Not for the beginner. The instructions are straight forward, but they require you to be comfortable with woodworking techniques. Great book.
Book Description
It's the stuff of dreams: A Scottish family gives up relative sanity and security to grow oranges for a living in a secluded mountain valley on the Mediterranean island of Majorca. But dreams, as everyone knows, have a nasty habit of not turning out quite as intended. Being greeted by a freak snowstorm is only the first of many surprising "experiences," and it isn't long before they realize that the orange farm they've purchased is a bit of a lemon.
However, laughter is the best medicine when confronted with consuming a local delicacy containing rats, the "live-chicken-down-a-chimney" technique of household maintenance, and attending a shotgun wedding. Their colorful Majorcan neighbors restore the family's faith in humanity, and help them adapt to a new and unexpectedly challenging life in this deceptively simple idyll of rural Spain. SNOWBALL ORANGES is hilarious and revealing, full of life and vivacity, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Majorca.

tranquillo.......2005-06-08
I bought this book two days ago and have to say that I have strugglled to put it down since. For anyone with an interest in travel and the charismatic characters one meets this is an essential read. It is written in almost a novel format and whilst this does much to enrich the individual chapters I did feel that this style did mean that some of the warmth of the principal characters was lost.In this sense it fell short of other books in the genre, notably Chris Stewart's Driving over lemons. However, Kerr's detailed descriptions of his neigbours were a pleasue to read. At times it is laugh out loud funny and just looking at the next paragraph would prompt another outburst. A good read. Now where is my passport?
Snowball Oranges.......2003-02-19
I bought this book at LA Airport just before flying to the UK, and I have to say that reading it made short of the long journey. I read it in one go, and my outbursts of snickering and laughing must have had my fellow travellers wondering if I was a few oranges short of the pound.
This book is unique in the travel genre in that the writer has a wonderful ability to tell his story as though it were a novel instead of just a travelogue. His sharply-observed portrayal of rural Majorcan characters and his vivid descriptions of the island's scenery and cuisine are so realistic that you can almost feel the sunshine, taste the food and smell the orange blossom.
I enjoyed the book so much that I bought the sequel, 'Manana, Manana', as soon as I arrived in the UK, and it lived up to my expectations and more. Next day I booked my first vacation to Majorca, and I can't wait to visit the places so graphically depicted in these books. You can bet I'll be first in line to buy the third in the series whenever it's published. Estupendo, Don Pedro!

Great answers for hard or scary questions........1998-02-19
As a mother of 3 small daughters and a prevention specialist, I thought this book was great. It gives easy, age appropriate answers for questions that parents may be uncomfortable answering because of the subject matter or lack of knowledge. It is a good way to start a conversation with your child.
