Book Description
In Warrior Spirit, Running to the Sound of Gunfire a young Airborne Ranger is shot off of his motorcycle while attempting to rescue 1000 American medical students on the Caribbean island of Grenada. 15 years later, a four man Special Forces team is attacked by an angry Serbian mob while on peacekeeping missions in the former Yugoslavia. Gunfire erupts, and the Airborne Ranger kills his Serbian brother. His son is born with a rare blood disorder and dies at age nine of an aneurysm while on a family hike in the Rocky Mountains.
The above events, plus many more, inspired the author to write this 398 page novel. Warrior Spirit is based on his true-life story: that of a modern day Special Operations Warrior. The story is not all blood and guts and appeals to both male and female readers. It takes you through slow, rural ranch life and the marriage of high school sweethearts to exotic adventures with the United States Special Operations Command. Every emotion from love to fear to humor keeps the pages turning.

Legendary Soldier.......2006-10-28
I was surprised to find that Jim had written a book about his Army experiences. I was one of the young privates lucky enough to serve under his mentorship in the infantry recon unit where Jim was the First Sergeant even though his actual rank was only a Staff Sergeant.
Jim was the soldier's soldier. He was a legend even at that time. This was before the first Iraq War so his Ranger combat patch stood out and caught everyone's attention identifying him as one of only a handful of true combat veterans in the Army during the long break between the Vietnam War and the more recent modern wars of the last decade. Jim parachuted into Grenada and descended through enemy fire. During the fighting he was shot in the stomach. He survived it all and years later he would routinely puke when our unit would go on runs because of the remaining stomach problems it had caused him. Jim was hardcore. It was a different time and different place, it would be hard to understand if you weren't there. Jim would lead "puke runs" where the unit would run together in the back hills for hours at a time until people were pushed hard enough to start puking. Jim trained us for war. He knew more about how to set up ambushes, various unorthodox ways to employ and rig the Army's weapons, how to walk the mountains and hills at night by the stars or with a compass, how to plan and execute raids, recons, ambushes and build hide sites, and literally just survive in a multitude of environments whether it was winter, jungle or desert. He was the most feared and respected leader I have ever personally known and served with in the Army. Beyond that he was a man of incredible moral character who would and had readily suffered great physical hardship and pain rather than fail his comrades or his country.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to hear an authentic voice of one of the most accomplished soldiers who has served in the Army since the time of the Vietnam War. Jim is the real deal, and there are few soldiers who have worn the uniform since Vietnam who could compare with him, and NOBODY's military record and accomplishments could put Jim's to shame.
Book Description
Rudolf Steiner has been called "the best kept secret of the twentieth century." Who was the unique individual behind the personality of this individual? Who was the man who introduced the the world to the spiritual path of anthroposophy? What was behind the ideas that formed what we know today as Waldorf education? What led this teacher to approach inner development as a science that uses thinking as a path to inner freedom?
In this unique and fascinating autobiography, Rudolf Steiner recalls the first thirty-five years of his life as he wrote of them in seventy weekly installments for a newsletter. Although he seldom spoke of personal matters, here he offers us a rare opportunity to view the intimacy of his inner life, his personal relationships, and the events that shaped him. Steiner doesn't focus on life's successes and failures; rather, this is an autobiography of a soul, and we are allowed to witness the evolving consciousness of a modern spiritual master.
Steiner possessed a precise and probing scientific mind aided by his natural clairvoyant ability to see into the spiritual world. He recognized the integrity and importance of modern scientific methods and, as a result, developed a modern discipline he termed "spiritual science." Since then, his insights have touched and enriched many areas of life in ways that continues to change lives.
This book is the self-portrait of a man whose ideas remain ahead of our time-and whose ideas are sorely needed in an increasingly chaotic and materialistic world.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic resource.......2007-01-03
Steiner's autobiography is a real classic, telling of his childhood in central Austria, his antics as a schoolboy, and his youth in thriving Vienna. It is an inner narrative about the events and impressions that shaped him, written in the last two years of his life. This Complete Works edition is copiously annotated by Paul Marshall Allen, who explains many references that, while understandable to German speakers in 1925 have since become obscure.
It's a long one guys!.......2006-03-31
As long as this book is, it does get boring at times.
The whole autobiography is described in purely external events, and done in the most detatched and objective way imaginable. That's why I think that it's stale in the beginning and middle sections.
It all starts to get interesting (for me) around 1900 when he gets involved with the Theosophical Society, then the occult action and drama picks up and doesn't let up. And right when you least expect, it abruptly ends, in 1907.
This is very intriguing because you think that he will talk about his spiritual experiences throughout but he doesn't. He just keeps it on the physical all the way, and it's like he does it on purpose. He only rarely mentions anything spiritual, but when he does, he does in an almost "intellectual" way, it's very strange!
I give it 3 stars because as much as I love Steiner, it still is too long of a book and somewhat tiresome. A lot of the what he talks about really doesn't means mean much to me in the long run, Eg: going to this place and hearing about the personality of this guy etc. I don't understand why he includes such random details? (as interesting as some of them are).
I would recommend reading others' reminiscinces and recollections of Steiner rather than his own autobiography.
But it is a necessary read for any Steinerite at least once. His language demands that you take leaps and bounds within your own thinking to meet him on "his" level.
Great Place to Start with Steiner.......2001-08-23
If you are wondering how to approach the work of Rudolph Steiner, this autobiography is a great place to start. It gives an excellent presentation of the development of Steiner's ideas, including how he was influenced and who he worked with and why. The extensively researched endnotes lead to an endless array of avenues for further study of people and ideas associated with Steiner. Steiner's methodology for his own studies serves as inspiration for anyone who wants to delve more deeply into his work.

Excellent information and examples.......2007-06-01
This is a great book on depression, stress and anxiety. I had a little "baby blues" after my first child was born, so I checked this book out from the library. I liked it so much that I bought it for reference and to lend out to my friends and family. It is full of very good information on depression, and the examples are very interesting. It reads slowly at first because it is so dense with information and new ideas, but if you can get through the first 100 pages, it moves a lot faster. It seems like we all know someone who suffers from these problems, and we all have them ourselves from time to time. I recommend this book without inhibition to anyone interested in the subject.
the instinct to love this book...........2007-05-25
Reading this book, reiterated a regimen I once used to follow. Taking fish oil, (as one of the procedures). Could not believe how effective it was. Here I am on one of the worst days of my menstrual cycle (usually) day 27, smiling, relaxed, and totally happy, without a care in the world. So unusual is that for me. This book has a few other solutions such as excercise and acupuncture, and one of them is bound to work for you as well. Thanks David Servan-Schreiber, for writing this book!
Interesting, but slightly impractical.......2007-05-04
I really enjoyed reading this book & bought it for my nephew who is studying psychology, but I wonder if you would ever find a practioner of some of these methods?
Overall a good read to make you look at current psychiatric treatments from a different perspective: is there a better way than Prozac?
The Instinct to Heal.......2007-04-10
So gratifying to read that science backs up much of what some of us have been doing for many years. Easy read for a sometimes complex subject.
Opening to our healing powers.......2007-01-12
Having been aware of a life threatening illness for more than 15 years, comlementary therapies have been healing and empowering. Aware that we find our own path, but that it is enhanced when we are open to hear others, I have been drawn to many teachers and books, taking what resonates with me. I normally don't initiate others; interests, but if they want to know more about me, I share that. In the case of "Instinct to Heal", it is a book I am directing and giving to others, as i do with "Love, Medicine & Miracles". It is not a bookd only for those confrtoning depression.

Book Description
Recent discoveries about the emotional brain show we can heal naturally from stress and depression. Award-winning psychiatrist and neuroscientist David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., presents seven methods for faster, more dramatic, and permanent results for patients who want to leave suffering behind and live joyful, happy lives. The methods presented in this book, taken from case histories, have all been proven to work in clinical tests. They are based on the self-healing mechanisms of the emotional brain, which controls the body, as opposed to the cognitive brain, which manipulates symbols and language. Dr. Servan-Schreiber considers the influence of the heart upon the brain, explores the use of EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing) to recover from trauma, and explains how to reset your biological clock to avoid symptoms from seasonal depression. We learn how the biochemistry of touch and love can heal emotional wounds, and we also learn how to use acupuncture, nutrition, and exercise to control our moods. An international bestseller, this is the first book on the market to answer the public's questions about the new alternatives to conventional psychopharmaceuticals, as well as traditional talk therapy. By reprogramming their emotional brains, people struggling with stress, anxiety, and depression can rediscover the balance and well-being needed to transform their lives.

The CURE for depression.......2007-03-20
I used to be severely depressed and non-functional for many years. I discovered on my own that Nutrition is the most important thing to cure depression. It's especially important to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. So learn a lot about nutrition! The second thing is to deal with your psychological issues. I recommend reading many, many self help books until your psychological issues are all resolved. I am 100% cured of depression now and very busy running my own business! And I did it all myself by eating very healthy food and reading many great self help books!
Drugs and talk "therapy" are NOT the answer. THEY DON'T WORK!!! THEY CURE NOTHING!!! They only make MONEY for the psychiatrists and psychologists! Books are SO MUCH better than worthless "therapists" that just sit there uselessly and listen to you talk and refuse to answer questions or give advice. These people are only interested in making a living! If they cured you, then they'd stop making a living, wouldn't they? So it is in their best interest NOT to cure you! And I have found in my experience that they truly do NOT want to cure you, they have no intention of curing you, and they expend no effort in looking for any cures!
Lots of fascinating and well-researched information.......2005-04-14
I tend to be a bit skeptical of self-help books because I have seen so many sloppy "new-age" versions, but this one is definitely on a different plane. Using the workings of the limbic (emotional) brain as his organizing principle, the author covers the therapeutic effects of diverse topics, from acupuncture, exercise, diet, light therapy, enhancing communication skills, and community service, to the lesser known practices of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and cardiac coherence. All of the chapters are very well presented with generous reliance on scientific information and studies, so that even being a skeptic accustomed to picking apart scientific literature, all the approaches struck me as at least worth exploring. Because many of these therapies are inexpensive, take time to explain, and are not capable of being patented, the business and medical establishments tend to underplay them. Many a time I have gone to the doctor for some problem or other, and left with a prescription for a medication that gave me side effects worse than the underlying condition. If this book were taken to heart, many people who go to their internist with symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, and pain, would get a prescription to exercise and meditate, instructions on how to eat more beneficially for their brain chemistry, and advice on how to reduce interpersonal conflicts. Even if you're not depressed (I am not and bought the book for someone close to me), it is a fascinating and rewarding read, and suggests many ways (some extremely simple) in which we can enhance the quality of life for ourselves and those around us.
First Book To Help Me.......2004-11-25
I have been battling depression (aka: The Big D) for over two years - since I was riffed - and this is the first book to actually help me. A lot of the books on depression seemed to be too academic. Or they focused on somebody else's depression. This book really talked to me. There are valuable suggestions, lots of practical advice, enough experimental data to make it sound like it might actually work for me, and no preaching. I highly recomend it to anybody who is fighting depression or knows somebody who is.
Finally, alternatives that I can live with.......2004-07-23
Dr. Servan-Schreiber walks you through various, alternative methods for dealing with depression. He explains everything in easy-to-understand language without talking down to the reader. He combines common sense approaches such as nutrition, exercise and meditation with more state of the art methods such as EMDR, dawn and stimulation therapies. He also makes a solid case for acupuncture, which I've always believed was great for alleviating some of depression's more stubborn symptoms. I recommend this on my Depression site at BellaOnline and just had to put my two cents worth in here. Buy this book!

Customer Reviews:
Delivers what it promises!.......2006-07-02
I checked this out from the library and ended up ordering a copy from Amazon two days later. I've made four or five of the meals so far. All have been tasty, and the prep time is amazingly short; that "30 minutes" includes cooking time, so usually I can get the sides whipped together and the kitchen cleaned up before it's time to eat.
I love books that give you a shopping list, side dish suggestions and a "game plan" of instructions; it's the next best thing to somebody else doing the work for you. The limit of 5 ingredients is a fun gimmick, and for the most part those ingredients are "real" food, not cream o' mushroom in a can.
Some portions were a little small for our family, which includes 2 healthy teenagers. And relying on pre-packaged convenience foods can get pricey--I will probably continue to cook raw potatoes, boil ordinary rice, and chop whole onions. But as the authors point out, it's nice to know we don't have to.
Final comment: the lasagna recipe alone is worth the price of the book.
Healthy and flavorful.......2006-03-25
At last a quick-recipe cookbook that offers healthy meals that still taste good! Several of the recipes are now part of my regular stable of dinner ideas because they use fresh vegetables and a minimum of cans. Even better, the recipes are so simple that I can keep the grocery list in my head. No more elaborate shopping lists. I love the variety of ideas -- a friend and I actually hosted a party using only recipes from the cookbook and it was a fabulous success. Nobody would have ever guessed it came from a quick and easy cookbook.
2 Cases for Me!.......2006-01-03
Finally, a cookbook that really does make my life easier instead of more complicated! These recipes make me look like a gourmet cook when really I have just "whipped it up" in less than 30 minutes with only 5 things to throw together. I was so impressed with this book that I ordered 2 cases and gave them away to my friends and family for Christmas. It was a hit!

Customer Reviews:
Very informative, quick read.......2002-03-13
After seeing several references to Doulas in other pregnancy and childbirth books, I was curious about exactly what a Doula does and doesn't do. This book answered all my questions. It is well-oranged and easy to read -- I finished it in about 2 hours. The authors are certainly very pro-Doula, but I can't think of anything they're against, except mothers being forced to experience childbirth alone. I am likely to search for a Doula when I get pregnant.
The only negative is the very 70's-ish photos, which I found a bit distracting, but they certainly don't detract from the content.
My first doula book.......2002-02-16
I am a soon-to-be doula in training. This was the first book I've read from the required reading list. The writing is well put together and down to earth. It was an excellent overview of the challenges ahead. It works well as a first "taste" of the service offered by loving, caring, labor assistants.
Mothering the Mother.......2001-08-09
This book is very helpful and insightful. I found the reading easy and informative. This book truly gives a clear idea of what a doula does and doesn't do. What a woman can and will experience. What is helpful for labor and delivery.
What to expect and look for.......2001-08-06
Mothering the Mother was great. When you are having your first, you're nervous, no matter how well you prepare. This book discussed the importance of having a doula and what to expect from her. Knowing these things and having a doula will definitely make the experience less stressful for both me and my husband.
turned me off to doulas.......2001-01-27
This book turned me off to the whole idea of a doula. For financial reasons, I was unable to hire a doula but had heard they could be a big help and this book came highly recommended. I was hoping for a section on breathing or relaxation techniques. I came away with the feeling the authors felt no birth experience could be a success or enjoyable unless a doula was present. There was a very clear message that the father could not be a sufficient coach and his role was periphery to the doula. I was disappointed in the lack of encouragement the authors gave the father to be an active participant in the whole birth process or that the mother would lose control of herself if a doula was not present. It was almost a throw back to when my father had to fight to be at my birth and that was 30 years ago.
