Book Description

An eccentric and charismatic officer, Roy Farran rose to command an SAS squadron during World War II. His fascinating story of the early days of Britain's Special Service became an immediate best-seller when first published, and it continues to intrigue. Covering action throughout the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Italy, Farran describes his capture and escape during the war, and how he eventually went on to lead some of the most daring operations far behind enemy lines.

3 out of 5 stars A good read.......2001-11-27

nothing groundbreaking here, but it is a nice look at early special warfare. The British SAS invented special warfare during WWII and this books looks at some of the earlier operations. Thre are some real good adventures here. The book is a first hand account. The book does not have any analysis. Any fan of the SAS should give it a shot.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining reading for anyone with an interest in military.......1998-10-25

For all those interested in military history, and in this case, the desert war and the following allied forces campaign in Italy this book proves entertaining reading. The book is a commentary by the author of his own experiences as an armored corps officer, and later, as a pioneer of "behind enemy lines" commando warfare. Included are reflections on the tides and fortunes of the British forces, which provide the context for some riveting accounts of the authors own combat experience. The author describes himself and his actions candidly, especially as a young inexperienced officer. The authors' story includes capture, escape and subsequent return to operate behind enemy lines with other British troops, leading Italian partisans in their fight against Germany. This form of warfare was at its infancy in its modern form, its importance not fully understood by the British high command. The success of this operation depended greatly on the authors' initiative and drive in the face of an unsympathetic and disinterested general staff. The book was written some two to three years after the end of the war, and the events are fresh in the authors memory. End.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures on Special Service sums up this book nicely.......2007-02-16

The book covers the period from 1940 to 1945 and chronicles the adventures of the author over this period, being split into 3 parts. Part I covers the Middle East 1940-1943 and covers Farran's part in Wavell's successful campaign against the Italians in Cyrenaica and the subsequent withdrawl as Rommel's Afrika Corps arrived and counterattacked. Farran's unit withdrew and was reequipped and sent to Crete, where he fought alongside the New Zealand Army (he has a lot of nice things to say about the Maori Battalion). Farran was captured, ended up in a prison camp in Greece and escaped. He ended up back in Egypt, back with Tanks again, and fought on the Western Desert and El Alamein, where he was injured. Following injury, he was evacuated to South Africa and then back to the UK in 1943. End of Part I.

Part II covers Farran's time with the Special Air Service. He'd managed to escape from the UK back to the Middle East where he was looking for active service and stumbled on an acquaintance in the SAS. He was promptly recruited, trained and started on SAS operations with the invasion of Sicily, where he led a SAS unit. This section covers SAS operations in Italy during 1943 where the SAS roamed in jeeps behind the enemy lines in the early part of the invasion. Farran then participated in SAS operations behind German lines in France in 1944, where he led a SAS unit operating with jeeps in roving attacks. Part III covers SAS operations in Italy in 1945, where SAS units joined and led units of Italian partisans in attacks on the Germans.

The book really is an account of Farran's adventures during the war. It's an interesting account, pays no attention to strategy or tactics except in passing. He concentrates on the actions themslves and his part in them, what he did, what his immediate unit did and what he felt and thought at the time. He's a good writer, you can get a good idea of what it must have been like and you can recapture some of the emotions and feelings of the times. The book was written in 1948, soon after the war ended, there was no sympathy for the Germans and in those non-PC times, Farran could be quite open about actions that would now result in expressions of outrage from the idiot left - machine-gunning surrendering Germans in Crete for example - something any New Zealander of the time would have been quite happpy to assist with after some of the atrocities committed by the Germans against NZ'ers there.

It's a good read but don't expect a history of the SAS or anything like that. It's a history of Farran's adventures in the war - which included 2 years with the SAS and 3 years prior to that with the Armoured Corps fighting in the Western Desert and Crete. Stirring stuff indeed!

Today Jane Addams is one of those people whose name "rings a bell," writes biographer Jean Bethke Elshtain. At the time of her death in 1935, however, she was more than the answer to a trivia question--she was "America's best-known and most widely hailed female public figure." Addams had recently won the Nobel Peace Prize and was famous for her social work as the founder of Hull-House in Chicago. Elshtain's innovation is to treat Addams like the protofeminist intellectual she was, a thinker whose "vision of generosity and hopefulness ... made the American democracy more decent and more welcoming today than it would otherwise be." Hull-House, for instance, was not merely a poorhouse for immigrants struggling to become citizens; it was a major cultural center that hosted speeches and debates. Because of the many books Addams wrote (including the classic Twenty Years at Hull-House) and her political activism, "her name is attached to every major social reform between 1890 and 1925," writes Elshtain. Addams has deserved a book of this caliber for quite some time; readers drawn to her are fortunate that an intellectual figure of Elshtain's stature took up the project. As the author says of her subject near the end of Jane Addams and the Dream of American Democracy: "Such a tremendous force." --John Miller

      Book Description

This major new interpretive biography--by one of America's foremost public intellectuals--eloquently examines Jane Addams's cultural and political influence on her time and ours.

In this eagerly anticipated interpretation of the life and work of quintessential "public intellectual" Jane Addams (1860-1935), Jean Bethke Elshtain explores Addams's legacy thematically and chronologically, recounting her embrace of "social feminism," her challenge to the usual cleavage between "conservative" and "liberal," and the growth of Chicago's famed Hull House into a thriving cultural and intellectual center. Jane Addams and the Dream of American Democracy is a rich and revealing portrait of one of the most extraordinary figures in American history.

4 out of 5 stars good book about a good person.......2002-02-06

This book is a breath of truthful air in recent history writing. Gone are the speculations and unsupported theories. Gone also is the garbage of modern history departments. The author deals with the recent speculation about Jane Addams. She does not ignore it. It is nice to find a book that deals intelligently with the subject. It is also nice to see that the author has carefully researched her subject. Historians of today are doing the world a great disservice. But the cultural wars will continue. Facts, provable facts, do matter in the end. The author talked to people who knew Jane Addams. In the First World War, Jane Addams was closely watched by various intelligence agencies of the federal government and of local government. If there was dirt to be picked up, these vacuum cleaners of that subject would have found it and published it. The reports of these agencies are available on microfilm in the Jane Addams Papers published by University Microfilms.

This book is 329 pages long. It has 63 pages of notes, 9 pages of index, and 10 pages of well selected photos.

It is a good book, about a good person. Jane will be long remembered for the "quality of her thinking, for her rightness as an interpreter of individuals to themselves and of social groups one to another." So wrote her first biographer, James Linn. I think this book continues that image of Jane Addams.

A book by kids to help your kids deal with cancer in the family

When Abigail and Adrienne’s mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. When the two sisters (then ages 11 and 9) couldn’t find any books for kids that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they decided to write one themselves. The result? Our Mom Has Cancer, a humorous, honest, hopeful account of the year their mother underwent treatment for breast cancer, delightfully illustrated with drawings by Abigail and Adrienne.

“This is by far the best of several children’s picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It [shows] the passage of time during treatment, and it [shows] that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time . . . .This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer.”
--a mom from Cedar Rapids, Iowa

My daughter is undergoing chemo. She was told she would lose her hair, so before she lost all of her hair I ordered this book for my grandson. It helped tremendously for him to understand why Mama was bald. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has a child whose parent is going through chemo.

5 out of 5 stars Best picture book about parental cancer.......2001-11-15

Many children's books about cancer in a parent treat it as movie disease: a convenient way to introduce mortality. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed a way to let my children know what they could expect as far as my therapy, and let them know what might happen emotionally.

This is by far the best of several children's picture books written about a parent with cancer. Because it is written and illustrated by two sisters, it conveys what kids want to know. It showed the passage of time during treatment, and it showed that people were loving and kind and hopeful in the midst of a rotten time.

This book is excellent, and I would recommend it to any parent who has been diagnosed with cancer as a way to open discussions with elementary-aged and younger children.

I go to school at Village Elementry in Coronado. Adrienne and Abigail are the cusins of a kid in my class named Paul. They got to come to our school and read the book to us. I think it was very good. It really is based on a true story! The book was about there mom who had breast cancer. They even wrote a hat song in the story! I give the book two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars From the Publisher:.......2001-01-23

When Abigail and Adrienne's mom told them she had cancer, they were afraid. But when the girls couldn't find any books that explained what might happen to their mother and what they might expect, they wrote one themselves.

They tell readers when their mother was tired during treatment, friends and family pitched in to help cook and to push her in her wheelchair. When chemotherapy made their mom's hair fall out, friends and family threw a hat party for her and honored her with an original song.

Their mom's hair has grown back, and Abigail and Adrienne have found that their family is closer than ever. The girls' story will show other youngsters that they are not alone in their experience with a loved one's cancer.

Flavored delightfully by his down-home good-ol'-boy Arkansas/Mississippi roots and spiced up by his often very funny observations based on his life as a celebrated novelist and poet, Butler's food writing leaves readers thinking about the flavors and meanings of food in ways that will leave them hungry for more. The book also includes sixty recipes--from Apple Bread Pudding to Fajitas, from Strawberry Shortcake to Chicken Pot Pie. Using his recipes as suggestions, not absolutes, Butler proves that for a creative cook the possibilities are endless.

I have scores of cookbooks from the likes of Thomas Keller, Charlie Trotter, Daniel Boulud, Jean-Georges and others, and yet this little volume is my absolute favorite, by far, and it holds a revered place on my nightstand. Jack Butler teaches creative writing at the College of Santa Fe and has published in The New Yorker, Poetry and the Atlantic, among others, and was nominated for a Pulitzer. His essays, which precede each of the recipes, are splendidly evocative, soulful, full of humor, and rich with insight about food, relationships, religion and life. Mind you, this isn't the vapid stuff of Chicken Soup for the Soul (though there is a splendid recipe for Chicken Pot Pie), rather, Butler weaves touching and amusing narratives of his family, Southern traditions and travel among the recipes, which come from both his family traditions (he's the son of a Baptist minsiter who was frequently paid with the produce from his congregation's gardens) and his fearless sense of improvisation. You likely won't cook everything in this book, but you'll definitely savor every word, and you'll be surprised at how quickly a cast iron skillet will become one of your favorite cooking tools. This book will become an indispensable part of your cooking library.

Jack is cool, with the conversational tone of this book, you feel as if he is in your kitchen with you helping you along while you laugh and share a drink. Great recipes. I work at a bookstore and examine all the cookbooks--I'm making this one my personal staff recommendation. There is a lot of love in this book that you can share with the ones that you love. Just pick up a pre-seasoned Lodge skillet (get the 10 inch one and the lid, only 10 bucks each) and this book and get started.

5 out of 5 stars Another Cast Iron Lover!.......2004-01-24

At last! Jack Butler is another person who feels exactly as I do about cast iron skillets! When I bought my cast iron skillets I felt as if I were buying a new friend. Because they'll last you for life, serving you faithfully.

Jack recommends NOT buying your skillets "new", but rather getting hand-me-downs, or flea market finds, but nobody I knew had their old skillets anymore. It seems as people get older handling the weight of their cast iron skillet requires more strength than they have. And the ones I found in flea markets never seemed as heavy as the Lodge skillets I'd see at Wal*Mart! So ALL of my cast iron cookwear is made by Lodge manufacturing. I just won't buy any other brand!

This book is NOT just another cookbook! Jack shares many of the stories of his life with us, and he writes in such conversational tones that I felt like he was speaking to me personally. "Thank you, Jack. I feel like I know you!"

The reason I bought this book was because I wanted to learn all I could about "the care and feeding of cast iron skillets" and I had seen Jack on "Home Matters", a Home and Garden tv show I watched religiously. Jack tells all I needed to know about "the creatures" and I was delighted to find someone else who loves them as much as I do. My very first, and largest skillet-a 12-incher-I have actually named! As I used it over and over again, and happily watched it turn jet black, I started refering to it as my Black Beauty, and a beauty it is! I often leave it sitting out on top of the stove, gleaming darkly in the light.

I love the many recipes in Jack's book. Thanks to him I now know how to make a great Chicken Pot Pie, which I've always wanted to know. And there are so many other dishes, too, such as Steak Fajitas, all made in the wonderful cast iron skillet! In fact, Jack has taught me that I can make ANYTHING in my beloved skillets! "Thanks again, Jack."

I found this book to be very touching at times. For instance in the chapter titled "A Grace For The Old Man", Jack talks about his father's death. I flinched and shed a few tears when I read, "My father died last week." You just don't expect that kind of thing in a cookbook. I am glad he shared this very personal event with his readers.

This is a very interesting book to read, plus all those mouth-watering recipes are great. I love the way Jack tells you in such a conversational tone how to make each dish, then follows up at the end of the chapter with it in regular recipe form.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in cooking with cast iron. It really is the best cookwear. It's the ONLY cookwear we really need. Just ask Jack! There isn't a thing I would change about "Jack's Skillet". This book is one of my "treasures" that I plan to keep for life.

          Thank you.

          4 out of 5 stars A feast for foodies . . ........2002-02-06

The author is a poet and novelist, but he's also a dedicated improvisational cook. He swears by his black iron skillet, taking the position that anything that can be cooked in a skillet, should be -- spaghetti, bisquits, chicken pot pie, blackberry cobbler -- anything. The essays in this collection are sort of bite-size, most of them revolving around a particular culinary topic. And most of those relate to his Southern upbringing in Mississippi, East Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas -- though he's now in Santa Fe and mutton gets into the act late in the book. Butler's style tends somewhat to the cutesy, but what he has to say about families and meal times and growing up the son of a Baptist preacher is generally worth listening to. And his commentary on the how and why of cooking are always interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The best kind of cookbook.......2002-01-03

It seems to me that there are three kinds of cookbooks:

1> The massive, reference-kind. Containing not just recipies, but info on how to buy an avacodo, the difference between a pinch and a dash, seventy five different things you can do with garlic, etc. For me, these books are useful, but they take all of the fun out of cooking. Worse, they don't encourage experimentation

2> The regional or course-specific kind. You know, books just about chocolate or cajun or brunch. Again, nice to have (especially if you're marrying someone Italian and you happen to be Jamacian... or something like that), but a little too specific for every day use.

3> The book that tries to do a good bit of the above, but focuses more on stoking your enthusiasm, your experimentation, and your built in love of food (you know you have one).

Jack's Skillet is fixed squarely in category number three. This slim book offers 50-odd chapters on every course or occasion or meal that you might come across in a year. Family get-togethers, Easter dinners, oysters, miles of chicken dishes, homemade pizza, shortcake, salads, barbeque, soups, blackberry pies, coffee, margaritas, biscuits, camping, meat loaf, cake and even home made crackers ("more convenient than going to the store").

Each chapter reads like an ode to the food and the situation it's being prepared in. The "flavor text" is entertainment in and of itself. When the time comes for the recipies at then end of each chapter, you're already drooling.

The recipies themselves are straightforward. Jack takes you through them in prose, then again in regular recipe form. The recipies avoid the banal of the over-simple and complex ornate-ness of the caterer. This is home cooking.

While there's a fair amount of regional pride from Jack (who's lived in Mississippi, Arkansas and New Mexico), Jack makes a strong effort to avoid limiting his scope and pulls recipies from all over.

Experimentation is encouraged and the reader is given a nice framework to experiment in.

In short, this is a book that encourages cooking. It gives the reader the enthusiasm that one only gets from a well-written cookbook; not just a book with good recipies. Pick it up!

2 out of 5 stars A Good, Bad, and Ugly Field Guide.......2006-09-17

            The Good:
This is the most comprehensive guide to rainforest mammals that I have found. The text covers just about everything you could ask for, even giving dentation patterns for the various families in case you stumble onto a skull in your wanderings.
            The Bad:
Unfortunately, probably to save money, this guide uses the technique of placing all the pictures together, separated from the text. I much prefer the more expensive technique of putting the text on a page facing the pictures. Here, though, the guide falls down by failing to put cross-references on the page facing the pictures, necessitating a flip back to the index in most cases to locate the text.
            The Ugly:
Whoever was responsible for quality control for this book should find another job. I was ready to return the book as defective when I noticed an "errata sheet" that explained that the page with the text corresponding to plate 1 was actually located following page 193. This is much too serious an error to occur in a published guide.
            The bottom Line:
The best thing to say about this field guide is that it is disappointing. If you are planning a trip to the rainforest in the near future, and you are interested in mammals, then buy the guide despite its shortcomings. Otherwise, wait for a revision.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go without it........2002-04-17

This book, referred to by many other authors, is THE guide for this group of Mammals. I found it indispensible for use in the rainforest, even if most mammals are very hard to see. The perfect illustrations, combined with the thorough descriptions and clear distribution maps, make it easy to determine what kind of animal you've seen. Very helpful to understand the local guides are the translations of the names in many tongues.

5 out of 5 stars It's a very practical and well illustrated fieldguide.......1998-11-12

It's the most usefull book I own related with the mammalfauna proyects ( inventories, education, management ) we are doing in Central and Western Colombia. Every aspect of the text and illustrations has proven to be very usefull and practical. The taxonomical descriptions are generaly good enough to clasify the bigger species in the field, and the habit and habitat descriptions coincide mostly with our own experiences. The distributionmaps included in the text are also very usefull. The illustrations are sometime a little small, but have proven to be easily recognized by the local habitants, what is extremely usefull during quick inventaries. The relation price-quality is outstanding

            5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......1998-09-24

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2006-06-22

This 2 CD set has sounds of 109 species, all of these species live in the rainforests of the New World. Disk 1 has a very large variety of mammal calls, some of these you wouldn't think would be made by that animal. For example, the Bush Dog makes a high squeaking sound. Other sounds you hear on this disk include: bats squeaking, squirrels chattering, anteaters snorting and screetching, etc. Disk 2 only has primate calls on it. The second disk also has some interesting sounds such as howler monkeys roaring, tamarins and marmosets chirping, night monkeys hooting, and much more.

You need to get this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable and ambitious publication.......2000-03-17

Produced by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology as a companion to a field guide, this remarkable two-CD set is unlike any other nature guide yet published. It is an audio guide to mammals, and only mammals, of the rainforests of the New World.

As the hot spots of the world's bioversity, rainforests have gotten lots of attention from naturalists and adventurous eco-tourists, who want to explore these green worlds for themselves. There have been countless field guides (both printed and audio) to birds in various parts of the New World tropics, but this audio guide exposes the voices of rainforest mammals, many of them retiring and rarely seen in the thick foliage, for study and appreciation.

The first disc is brief (about 40 minutes), but sound recordings of a lot of these mammals are not easily obtained. Over 50 species give voice to their unique sounds. Opossums snort and grunt, jaguars make a sound like someone sawing on a log, tapirs whistle like birds. There is even a recording of a river dolphin spouting, the sudden explosive noise almost out of place among the other jungle sounds.

The second disc, longer in length, features the most vocal of the rainforest mammals, the primates. Some of these produce sounds that could easily be mistaken for the sounds of other creatures. For example, some of the smaller monkeys, like the tamarins, produces squeaks and chitters that are surprisingly birdlike. The night monkey, calling after dark when it would probably never be seen, hoots exactly like an owl. The loudest of the rainforest monkeys, the howlers, produce roars of such intensity that they will literally frighten anyone who visits the rainforest but does not know that these are the sounds of harmless vegetarians.

"Sounds of Neotropical Rainforest Mammals" is off the beaten track, to be sure, but if you are traveling to the tropics anytime soon, I strongly recommend it. Even if you're not, I recommend it anyway. You haven't really lived until you've startled your neighbors with the loud, cackling chorus of the dusky titi monkey.

                        Book Description

Like most Jews living in Berlin, Herbert Sonnenfeld lost his job in 1933. He decided to visit Palestine, where he photographed the poor refugees in that undeveloped country. When he returned to Berlin, his pictures appeared in a Zionist newspaper, and his career in photojournalism was launched. His wife, Leni, soon became his assistant and then a photographer in her own right. After the couple came to America in 1939, they were able to travel farther afield, and they spent the rest of their lives taking pictures of Jewish communities around the world. This mesmerizing book is a selection of their best photographs.
The images tell the story of Jewish life in prewar Berlin; of Youth Aliyah, a Palestine emigration program; and of Jewish communities from Iran to Morocco to Spain. Recording the arrival in Israel of Jews from all over the Diaspora, the Sonnenfelds document the creation and evolution of the Israeli nation. These haunting photographs, along with Leni Sonnenfeld’s moving reminiscences, are a testament to the Jewish experience in the twentieth century.
