The Performance Zone: Your Nutrition Action Plan for Greater Endurance & Sports Performance (Teen Health Series)

ASIN: 1591201489 |
Book Description
Every athlete, coach, and parent of a young athlete knows that nutrition can enhance sports performance. But few know exactly how to make this happen. "The Performance Zone" solves this problem. This book synthesizes the most sound and up-to-date science to provide a nutrition action plan that enables athletes to raise their athletic performance. The authors provide simple, proven guidelines for fueling mjuscles during and after sports acitivity. Using these guidelines, athletes can increase their endurance and strength, reduce injuries and muscle soreness, bounce back faster after training and competition, and even be less susceptible to infections. Since each sport has slightly different nutritional needs, this book includes sports-specific nutrition tips from elite athletes, leading coaches, nutritionists, and exercise physiologists in the major individual and team sports.Customer Reviews:

Fills an Important Need.......2004-06-11
The authors define "the performance zone" as a time interval that begins 30 minutes before exercise and ends 15 minutes after exercise. "Science clearly shows that the right combination of fluid and nutrients consumed within the Performance Zone will help you improve your athletic performance far more than the latest high-tech equipment or training device," they write. Ivy and Portman poured through hundreds of published research studies to determine exactly what and how much athletes should consume within this time period and on what kind of schedule.
Before they get to the practical recommendations, which make up the bulk of the book, the authors provide some interesting background on what happens inside the body during exercise and how "nutritional intervention" can help athletes prepare their body for activity, achieve optimal performance during the workout or competition, and recover quickly and thoroughly afterward.
Not surprisingly, Ivy and Portman conclude that a well-formulated sports drink is far superior to water or any other "natural" food or drink for use immediately before and during exercise. In Chapter 6, they attack the myth that all sports drinks are the same, pointing to significant differences in the formulations of various popular brands and explaining what they feel - based on the available science - is the ideal formulation.
The most useful part of The Performance Zone, Chapter 6 also shows how a simple calculation can show athletes exactly how much sports drink to consume based on their individual weight and activity. Endurance athletes in particular will find this calculation helpful, I believe. Triathletes and other endurance athletes are always struggling to find the right balance of fluid and carbohydrate intake. Ivy and Portman make the simple point - which, amazingly, I had never before read or heard anywhere else - that water loss and carbohydrate burning almost always occur in a fixed proportion during exercise: about 4.5 ounces per 100 calories. Nuggets like this really take the guesswork out of creating the proper fueling schedule.
The subject of post-exercise nutrition receives a similar treatment. The authors weigh the advantages and disadvantages of various recovery nutrition strategies ranging from "real food" to powdered drink mixes. Another simple formula allows athletes to calculate exactly how much water, carbohydrate, and protein they should consume within the post-exercise segment of the performance zone.
Nutritional needs and challenges and fueling opportunities vary from sport to sport. Understanding this fact, Ivy and Portman include a chapter in which a cavalcade of well-known professional athletes and coaches provide tips specific to each of a dozen sports. Among the contributors are mountain biking world champion Alison Dunlap and running coach Jeff Galloway. Parents and coaches of young athletes will probably get a lot out of this chapter. The final chapter, which discusses the drawbacks and dangers of a wide range of nutritional supplements and performance enhancing drugs, should be required reading for this audience, and for young athletes themselves.
All in all, The Performance Zone is an excellent resource with great practical value for athletes in all sports. As the authors point out in the book's first chapter, most athletes simply are not doing what the latest science suggests they out to be doing in terms of fueling their bodies before, during, and immediately following exercise. The Performance Zone promises to correct this problem one athlete at a time.

Good if you live in Europe or warm climates in N. America.......2004-06-09
The descriptions of the warm-climate hybrids are first-rate. However, the species are lumped together and talked about according to group rather than each being treated individually.
Overall, the book is easy to read, has nice photos (mostly of the warm-climate hybrids), and can give the beginner a good introduction to the world of penstemons.
I gave the book only three stars because its usefulness for me is pretty limited (I live in a cold climate) and because of its sparse treatment of the species penstemons.

40 Ways to Raise a Nonracist Child
Barbara Mathias Manufacturer: Collins ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

Book Description
30 years after the civil rights movement, America is still imbued with the spirit of racism. Despite the best intentions of a generation, children today are still learning the dangerous lessons of prejudice, hate and bigotry. Ultimately, the only way to rid our society of the evil of racism is to teach our children, while they're still impressionable, that color is not an indication of a person's worth. Unfortunately, many parents are at a loss as to how to do this effectively. 40 Ways to Raise a Nonracist Child is the perfect aid for these parents. Divided into five age-related sections, ranging from preschool age to the teenage years, it provides helpful and practical ways parents can teach these important lessons, and contains specific advice addressing the unique concerns of both white parents and parents of color. With topics ranging from how to select toys for toddlers to how to talk with teenagers about what they see on the evening news, 40 Ways to Raise a Nonracist Child is a book all concerned parents will want to have on their shelves.Customer Reviews:
An awesome guide for parents.......2004-04-10
The Very second item is about why White parents should care about racism. In Ms. Mathias Introduction, she approaches the potential risk in approaching racism in a format such as '40 Ways to..." and she assures us that she does not mean to imply that racism is not a serious matter but that parents have little time to read long books about parenting. Ms. French also has an Introduction. These wonderful authors say that kids will notice differences and that's fine. While most of society thinks that going 'color-blind' will eliminate racism, these two (and I) do not agree. "Yes she does have darker skin than you. And you have lighter skin than her. It would be pretty boring if we were all the same wouldn't it?" is a premise of the book.
Finally, Ms. Mathis and Ms. French do not lay blame on any one race or age group. It's not the whites fault or the blacks or hispanics fault and it's not the parents fault or the kids fault. It's the communities fault and the community needs to work together to stop racism.

Loss Within Loss: Artists in the Age of AIDS (Living Out)
N. Y.) Alliance for the Arts (New York Manufacturer: University of Wisconsin Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0299170705 |
Book Description
"An extraordinary achievement of witness." --Tim Miller, author of Shirts & Skin. When an artist dies we face two great losses: the person and the work he did not live to do. Loss within Loss is a moving collaboration by some of America's most eloquent writers, who supply wry, raging, sorrowful, and buoyant accounts of artist friends and lovers struck down by AIDS. These essayists include Maya Angelou, Alan Gurganus, Brad Gooch, John Berendt, Craig Lucas, Robert Rosenblum, and eighteen others. Many of the subjects of the essays were already prominent--James Merrill, Paul Monette, David Wojnarowicz--but many others died young, before they were able to fulfil the promise of their lives and art. Loss within Loss spans all of the arts and includes portraits of choreographers, painters, poets, actors, playwrights, sculptors, editors, composers, and architects. This landmark book is published in association with the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, a national organization that preserves art works created by artists living with HIV or lost to AIDS. Loss within Loss stands as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic on the arts community and as the first real survey of that devastation. Though these accounts are often intensely sad, Loss within Loss is an invigorating, sometimes even exuberant, testimony to the sheer joy of being an artist . . . and being alive.
Customer Reviews:
A MAJOR COLLECTION.......2001-12-05
Several of the contributing writers are quite famous: the lecturer/poet/teacher Maya Angelou, the playwright/screenwriter Craig Lucas ("Prelude To A Kiss," "Longtime Companion"), the novelist Allan Gurganus ("Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All"), the writer Andrew Solomon ("The Noonday Demon") et. al. Several of the dedicatees lived the lives of celebrities: the poet James Merrill, the film makers Derek Jarman and Howard Brookner, the writer Paul Monette. But it is not their fame which is celebrated in this book: it is their love and friendship and, most importantly, their art which is now lost to the world forever because of a disease, the deadly power of which, was and still is, underestimated. The styles of the stories are as diverse as the styles of the individual writers: some read like the poetry they are; some like straight-forward fiction and some like excruciatingly honest, almost farcical diary entries.
These are not simply sad stories; they are beautifully written, funny, charming, intelligent, very candid rememberances of lives past passed. Besides the stories, there are some photographs of the artists and their works, biographies of the writers and their subjects, a wonderful photograph by John Dugdale on the cover and an introduction by Edmund White
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Far more than a collection of elegies.......2001-07-11
The unexpected joyful aspect of spending time with this extraordinary book is discovering how much we didn't know about so many artists in every field - from poetry, to novels, to puppets, to architecture, to dance. Yes, the names ring distant bells, but when the artists are put into context with the time in which they were creating AND that they were creating knowing that their corporal time was limited, the effect is staggering. I do not find this book at all morose; if anything it is celebratory. And the method of presentation and quality of writing leaves the reader with one primary question: What if AIDS hadn't destroyed so many brilliant minds, so many unborn ideas? As a document on the effect of a devastating disease on the arts and as a resource book of what was happening in the forefront of culture in the 1980s and 1990s, this book will be the gold standard. Highly recommended reading - on so many levels.
Astonishing & Heartbreaking.......2001-03-08
This book will break your heart and make you smile at the same time. It's truly a work of art.
