Book Description
A soldier’s courage brings him to his sweetheart. A wife’s love brings his story to life.
Zero Ward is the autobiographical account of Lt. Sneddon’s experiences in WWII, and contains his illustrations of the horrors he saw and lived through during his time as a POW.
Army Air Corps pilot Second Lt. Murray Sneddon was stationed in Manila on the Phillipines Islands when the Japanese bombed the airfields at Pearl Harbor, marking the beginning of the U.S. involvement in World War II.
With no relief available, the Air Corps units became infantry troops, sent to Bataan to defend the Phillipine coast. As supplies, food, and ammunition were depleted, Japanese troops invaded the island of Luzon and took thousands of U.S. prisoners. Thus began the infamous Bataan Death March. Under inhumane conditions, U.S. prisoners were forced to march to prison camps, only to endure even greater atrocities.
In 1944, with American forces on their way, surviving prisoners were loaded in to "Hell Ships." On these unmarked ships, the conditions were even more deplorable than in the prison camps. Many were torpedoed by American submarines. More men died than lived.
Completed and published after his death from leukemia by his wife, Fiona, Zero Ward is an incredible story of captivity, escape, courage, faith, and ultimately, of love.

Book Description
In this detailed study, Christopher Norris defends the kinds of arguments advanced by the early realist, Hilary Putnam. Norris makes a point of placing Putnam's work in a wider philosophical context, and relating it to various current debates in epistemology and philosophy of science. Much like Putnam, Norris is willing to take full account of opposed viewpoints while maintaining a vigorously argued commitment to the values of debate and enquiry.
Book Description
Introverted children are often misunderstood, even by their parents, who worry about them. Engaged by their interior world, they’re often regarded as aloof. Easily overwhelmed by too much stimulation, they can be seen as unmotivated. Content with just one or two close friends, they may be perceived as unpopular. Parents fret that they are unhappy and maladjusted. But the truth is quite different: Introverted children are creative problem solvers. Introverted children love to learn. Introverted children have a high EQ (emotional IQ) and are in touch with their feelings. They take time to stop and smell the roses, and they enjoy their own company. They are dependable, persistent, flexible, and lack vanity.
How can parents help their introverted children discover and cultivate these wonderful gifts? Help is here. Written by Dr. Marti Olsen Laney, author of
The Introvert Advantage with 74,000 copies in print,
The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child fully explains introversion as a hardwired temperament, not a disability, and tells just what parents need to do to help their child become the person he or she is meant to be—and succeed in an extroverted world. Beginning with a 30-question quiz that places a child on the introvert/extrovert continuum,
The Hidden Gifts shows parents how to foster a climate that allows introverted kids to discover their inner strengths; schedule ways for a very young innie to recharge those batteries and teach an older child to do it for him- or herself; create a harmonious household with siblings, and parents, of different temperaments; help innies find success at school, sports, parties, and other group activities.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for understanding adults and children.......2007-05-31
I bought this book to help understand my 10 year old daughter, who is an "innie". It has helped me understand her and my "innie" husband. It also made me realize you can't "convert" an "innie" to an "outie", and now I wouldn't even want to. The book helped me realize that being an "innie" is ok, even wonderful, in our "outie" world.
A must have for parents, teachers and families of introverted children.......2006-12-23
This a wonderful book! I feel that it has a great mix of scientific as well as real-life wisdom. Our 4 yr old son is very introverted and it was often hard for us to help him handle social situations. His personality can be hard to figure sometimes and this book is wonderful at describing the internal workings of an introverted child - and how to help them thrive. I am often referencing this book to help teachers, friends and family to understand his unique personality. I am reading this book for the second time...this time with a highlighter in hand to mark the many points that I often tell others about.
True...Completely True.......2006-04-11
As an introverted person, this is a very valid book detailing the characteristics of an introvert. I have gone through many of the situations decribed in this book. A must buy if you know someone with this personality. A++++ Book.
Good for parents and teachers.......2006-04-01
As an innie, I appreciate any resources that help others to understand the different learning styles and needs that introverts have from extroverts. I don't need a scientific explanation of why I am different, but do need to be understood for who I am. I am pleased to see that one of the reviewers found this valuable both as a parent and as a teacher. I wish more teachers would be open-minded toward our differences, and accepting of the different needs of different children. Too often children are expected to fit into one mold, and if they don't then they are labeled as difficult or uncooperative (or learning disabled).
Great for Parents!.......2006-02-05
As an extroverted parent, I was nervous when my son showed signs of being an introvert. I was worried that he wouldn't survive in our extroverted society. Even though my son is 9 mos. old, this book helped me understand and appreciate him. I don't believe the author's main point to this book is to scientifically explain the introverted child. I think it is to explain how to help facilitate our child's world so that it helps them be "them."
I can already see a difference in how my son reacts to me and the world. He is overall happier because I take the time to understand him. I am a teacher and it also helps me take another look at how I relate to my innie students.
If you are confused about your child's quiet behavior, I would definitely recommend this book to you!
BTW, I like that the author uses the term "innie" and "outie."

Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I was expecting.......2007-01-27
I agree with Maggie, this book has no association with the South Beach Diet. "South Beach" simply means the author lives in Miami, likes to cook and wrote a cookbook. I find this book frustrating also because it includes absolutely no nutritional information for any of the recipes. I understand that many cookbooks omit this information, my Fanny Farmer Cookbook from 1979 has none of this either, but those claiming to be "low fat" or "low carb" or both generally will tell you how much fat/carb and or both are being consumed. And how many mouths are we feeding...? some recipes do not even state the number of servings it makes. Some of the recipes do sound good, but without knowing if I should be eating the entire meatloaf myself or if I am sharing with 12 of my closest friends, I'm not going to bother to make it.
This is not a South Beach Diet cookbook.......2006-03-13
Because of the presentation of this book on the Amazon site, and the "fat" and "carb" reference on the cover, people will assume this book is associated with The South Beach Diet. It clearly is not. With references to "phases" and such in this book, I think that Nancy McCune is trying to rip off the public and lead people to believe this book is affiliated with Dr. Agatston and The South Beach Diet. It is not.
With ingredients listed such as full-fat cream, some of the recipes in this book will not be fitting for those following The South Beach Diet.
I recommend that people stick with THE South Beach Diet cookbooks by Dr. Arthur Agatston, and avoid this cheap imitation.

Love it!.......2002-01-19
I really like this book.
It's easy to read and understand .
I made the dog armature witout any trouble. I did need to change the head somewhat though for the breed I wanted.
I am not a cat person but that cat planter is just too cute and I will probably make that.
The only thing I didn't like about this book is the author recommends buying paper pulp mix and I think that is a waste of money when it's simple to make your own.
But
I still love this book!
it has some great projects and lots of great tips too!
A true learning experience =).......1999-11-25
Our school used this book for art class! We're a little alternative school and everyone loved the projects....we had a hard time just choosing one =) It was easy for us to come to class day after day and work on projects for an hour n want to even work more on them....we all became really proud of the projects this book helped us make =)
Fantastic Fun!.......1999-08-17
A ton of really creative and fun projects. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and there are lots of photos. Highly recommended!
Excellent ideas and instructions for modern projects........1998-05-06
This book begins with the basics, including an explanation of materials and techniques used. There are great color photos, and the book shows the development of many projects step by step. The book is not targeted at small children - there are other books that are. A good quarter of the finished projects, however, are appealing to children and perhaps, the kids can help out at times. This book is for pre-teen through adult, and the instructional design and photography offer tips to the beginner or the advanced. Only one criticism, the projects in the book are made with newspaper as the paper of choice, when tissue paper that is matte on one side and shiny on the other, i.e., reinforced with special fibers would be an easier medium to work with, more durable overall, and more "finished" looking. I am not a purist, I just want the results of my labor to look terrific! Good luck!

Full of useful information on refreshing tired-out lawns and gardens, The Lawn and Garden Owner's Manual is a terrific, comprehensive guide to ongoing care and maintenance of those long-suffering lawns, fruit trees, and ornamental trimmings. Emphasizing care of plants that are already installed and in need of some tender loving care, there are lots of helpful charts and calendars to help you time your tasks properly. Troubleshooting areas are especially helpful for the lawn--you'll learn just how to fix those spots of patchy growth or yellow grass. Plant choices are aimed at providing attractive, low-maintenance options for all types of growing conditions. From grasses to vines, you'll find lots to update your existing lawn.
There's both organic and chemical solutions to pest and disease control. The authors caution you never to expect an instant fix for long-term problems--rather than being discouraging, this tactic will be reassuring to novices. There's lots of insight provided into why all these types of upkeep are necessary, and questions like "is pruning really worth it?" are answered in a straightforward manner. Whenever possible, replacements are offered for high-maintenance areas such as enormous lawns or disease-prone roses, and these replacements are often more attractive than the originals. Plenty of eye-pleasing color photos round out this handy, colorful addition to the gardening shelf. --Jill Lightner

Customer Reviews:
Good for thought.......2002-07-13
This is a good book to use to plan activities and ways of celebrating the various holidays in a manner to make children more interested in their own culture rather than the Christian culture that surrounds them. I think it would also work for those who became bored with the Judaism offered them as children but who wish to re-enter the Jewish way of life (or converts).
Great resource on Jewish Values, Holidays, and Traditions.......1998-09-17
As a Christian who's seriously dating a Jew, I ordered the book to help me understand what being Jewish is all about. This book has a wealth of information about embracing Jewishness, raising a Jewish family, and maintaining Jewish traditions and identity. Much of the advice is geared toward those who wish to bring more Jewish faith and culture into busy, modern lives. I appreciated the honest and suppportive perspective on interfaith relationships. The prayers, blessings, and quotes throughout the book give an inspiring picture of an embraceable faith, as well as lots of insight as to how that faith can be woven into daily life. Wonderful book, a real gem.
A great resource, comprehensive and fun!.......1998-06-05
I reccomend this book highly! Not only is it practical and informative, it's a great read. Fun and accessible. Don't miss it!
Great book, well needed.......1997-08-27

Book Description
In The Double Mirror, the author's personal history-- as a student of the late Tibetan master Chogyam Trungpa, known for his unconventional lifestyle and "crazy wisdom" teaching style-- is the framework for an incisive and eloquent examination of a profound spiritual journey. Writing both from a critical perspective and from his direct experience of Vajrayana practice, the author look at Buddhist tantric teachings and practices and their expressions in Vajradhatu, Trungpa's organization. While discussing how the institution may sometimes function like a "cult," Butterfield nonetheless experiences Buddhist tantra as an authentic system of profound spiritual transformation.
The Double Mirror explores the effects of Buddhist practice on personality, autonomy, perception, and health, and discusses what Buddhism has to offer American. With skeptical intelligence, Butterfield illuminates the stages, teachings, and assumptions of the Tibetan Buddhist path, offering a frank and insightful portrayal of the ideal and reality of spiritual life.
Customer Reviews:
Another apostate.......2007-10-15
The late Chogyam Trungpa has already been picked over by his former students and lovers (most of them his students). All one is left with at the end of the saga is the essential problem Tibetan Buddhism presents to westerners. It is a religion with a monocratic heirarachy that stresses unflinching obedience to the "teacher", who is supposed to embody the Buddhist teachings. Trouble is it is now exported without reform to a democratic west. It is fascinating to see how students manage this tension in their own lives. As charismatic an brilliant as he apparently was, Trungpa was an alcoholic philanderer with some sociopathic tendencies as well. Most of his students came through unscathed. Others, like Butterfield, did not. Read it and weep.
engrossing.......2005-05-06
A highly readable and sensitively written book.
Butterfield was a follower of a Buddhist cult (using the term loosely: it was more kooky than vicious) that revolved around the enigmatic but dissolute Chogyam Rinpoche.
The book is a chronicle of the author's years with these people, and why he, Siddharthalike, eventually had to turn and follow his own path.
Perhaps the book's chief merit lies in its deliberate dissection of what it's like to really want to get into a belief system, yet know in the back of your mind that it doesn't add up. You don't want to embarrass people, you don't want to strain friendships, you have so much invested, your friends will think you foolish, etc. And yet you are unsuppressibly aware the whole thing is horse-puckey.
Having said that, the book is certainly not an "expose" of Buddhism, or even of Rinpoche. It is clear that Butterfield has a high opinion of most of his co-religionists and is not necessarily out to take off Rinopoche's head or discredit the religion.
Rather, it is a respectful and thoughtfully-woven account of the author's years of involvement with this group, and how he grew to be dissatisfied personally with its teachings and practices.
And happily, this book is not so beset with specialized Buddhist terms that only the initiated could navigate it. I've seen some of those. No, it's fine material for a general reader, or for somebody just getting into Buddhism.
No spiritual materialism here.......2004-02-01
The author recounts the story of his journey on the Shambhala buddhist path, a path originated for Westerners by the controversial Trungpa Rinpoche. He speaks from his experience, relating both his experiences and his thoughts about them in a way that allows the reader to separate the two. And I might add that it's a well-crafted and enjoyable read. Butterfield views the ideosycracies and controversies of the Shambhala organization more completely than I have seen in print anywhere, at the same time that he introduces the reader to Tibetan Buddhist practice. Butterfield was an arhat; his book is embued with clarity and insight. I wish the reviewer who thought Butterfield missed the point of Tibetan Buddhism would explain what else he thinks it is. I was saddened to read that Butterfield was rejected by his sangha on account of this book. I don't get it.
A nervous, dualistic journey into space.......2002-09-26
This book is a very interesting window into the mind of a Buddhist student who thought that the crucible of wisdomfire was supposed to be a democratic tanning salon. Consistently, Mr. Butterfield's misunderstandings and fear are laid out as a series of revelations. His prose is rich in sportscasting and identity politics. We end up with a portrait of someone who, suckling the teat of skepticism and mistrust, missed the vital points of dharma over and over again.
Parts of this book are interesting. It does provide a glimpse into the basic foundational practices of vajrayana, which is good. Unfortunately, the information that is there becomes sullied by the author's personal hesitations and glee in revealing "secrets."
There are a lot of concepts in this book, but there is no heat. It nitpicks at the problems of Trungpa Rinpoche's sangha (admittedly serious as some of them may have been) while providing little to no window into the strengths inherent in the Buddhist lineage and the force of blessings therein.
It is truly sad that Mr. Butterfield's "revelation" has the potential to turn away legitimate spiritual seekers. My advice: don't let this book be your only window into Buddhism OR the life of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. That would be a tremendously unfortunate thing.
Spiritual Path or Cult?.......2002-07-12
In Double Mirror, Stephen Butterfield discusses some of his experiences with the controversial Tibetan Buddhist guru, Chogyam Trungpa. There is quite a bit of information here on Tibetan Buddhist beliefs and rituals --the stages of initiation, the principle of "emptiness" and the fundamental law of absolute devotion to the guru. Butterfield never becomes fully reconciled to the latter. His feelings about Trungpa and his organization are ambivalent throughout this book. On the one hand, Trungpa is described as an authentic teacher of Buddhism, inspiring Western students with his "crazy wisdom" tactics (in many ways similar to Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). On the other hand, Butterfield gives ample evidence that this was as much a cult as a religion. There is a strict hierarchy within the organization; higher-ups live in luxury while beginners are treated as serfs. Worst of all, Tendzin, Trungpa's second in command, knowingly infected many students with AIDS. To complete the picture, Butterfield describes both Trungpa and Tendzin as alcoholics. These facts seem to go beyond the limits of even tantra or crazy wisdom and into the realm of pure exploitation and hypocrisy. Butterfield never fully reconciles the two sides of his experience, which gives the title of this book a double meaning (the first meaning is that a Buddhist perspective sees the inner and outer worlds as mirroring each other). He tries to reconcile a skeptical mind with a tradition demanding absolute obedience to a guru. This is a very difficult issue for someone raised in a Western culture and following an Eastern discipline, so I can't really fault Butterfield for not solving this dilemma. Still, there is something askew about the way he alternately praises and condemns the organization. More than having mixed feelings about it, he almost seems to have a split personality regarding it. Apparently, he left the group very conflicted and unable to synthesize his thoughts and feelings into either a positive or negative conclusion. He tries to justify this using the Buddhist doctrine of nonduality (the double mirror again), but I don't think this kind of ambivalence is quite the ideal aspired to by mystics. I wish the book had a little more about Butterfield's life and experiences within the group and less about ritual. There are many pages of detailed descriptions of rituals, using technical Buddhist terminology. To me, this detracted somewhat from the larger picture. Still, very interesting and recommended for spiritual seekers, especially those interested in Eastern religions.
Book Description
Lavina Cumming has spent her entire first ten years of life on the Bosque Ranch in Arizona Territory with her mother and father, five brothers, and her black mustang pony, Chummy. When her mother dies, her father decides it would be best if Lavina went to live with her aunt, where she can be brought up as a lady. Starting off at dawn on September 16, 1905, Lavina travels by train to Santa Cruz, California. Armed with the Cumming family motto — "courage" — she arrives in a world of two-story houses, automobiles, a new school, and her cousin, "awful Aggie." Trying her best to settle in, Lavina is as shocked as everyone else by the great earthquake that nearly demolishes the nearby city of San Francisco. In the aftermath of the quake, she must make a big decision about her future. Based on the true story of Susan Lowell's grandmother, this acclaimed book, which includes a short afterword by the author, offers a compelling look at life in early twentieth-century California and a girl struggling to find her place there.

A book you shouldn't miss!.......2001-01-30
Lavina is a ten-year-old girl who lives at the Bosque Ranch in the Arizona territory in the early 1900's. Her mother died, and her father is sending her to live in California with her aunt. When she arrives, she steps into a whole different world. Sometimes her Aunt Agnes reminds her of her father. Her aunt has a daughter named Maude, and Maude has a daughter, Aggie, who is eight. It's hard to get along with Aggie, but Lavina makes friends at school. Lavina has a fight with her aunt one night, and she plans to run away in the morning, but something big happens before she gets the chance. This is a well-written book.

Tedious.......2003-09-28
I found the book to be tedious, VERY slow-moving, and exploitive. More of a self-delusional fantasy than autobiography. A TOTAL waste of money.

Description:
We used a double video Live-Replay-Live procedure to explore self-self interactions in fourteen 9-week-old infants, repeated at 13-weeks with 10 of these infants. Using multiple measures of behavioural response we found that (1) in all cases where age effects held, duration of response was greater at 9- than at 13-weeks, (2) infants' responses differed according to whether or not self-images were Live or Replay, and (3) age and condition interacted to influence infants' responses. At 9 (but not 13) weeks, the two Live conditions correlated with each other but not with the Replay condition on some measures, indicating that infants apprehended the visual-proprioceptive contingency provided by their actions. Also at 9-weeks only, all infants showed reversals in visual attention with evidence for a bi-modal pattern: 8 preferring the Live conditions and 6 the Replay condition. An explanation based on familiarity and increasing disinterest with specific contexts is suggested.

Description:
The current dominant view of the visual system is marked by the functional and anatomical dissociation between a ventral stream specialised for perception and a dorsal stream specialised for action. The ''double-dissociation'' between visual agnosia (VA), a deficit of visual recognition, and optic ataxia (OA), a deficit of visuo-manual guidance, considered as consecutive to ventral and dorsal damage, respectively, has provided the main argument for this dichotomic view. In the first part of this paper, we show that the currently available empirical data do not suffice to support a double-dissociation between OA and VA. In the second part, we review evidence coming from human neuropsychology and monkey data, which cast further doubts on the validity of a simple double-dissociation between perception and action because they argue for a far more complex organisation with multiple parallel visual-to-motor connections:1.A dorso-dorsal pathway (involving the most dorsal part of the parietal and pre-motor cortices): for immediate visuo-motor control-with OA as typical disturbance. The latest research about OA is reviewed, showing how these patients exhibit deficits restricted to the most direct and fast visuo-motor transformations. We also propose that mild mirror ataxia, consisting of misreaching errors when the controlesional hand is guided to a visual goal though a mirror, could correspond to OA with an isolated ''hand effect''. 2.A ventral stream-prefrontal pathway (connections from the ventral visual stream to pre-frontal areas, by-passing the parietal areas): for ''mediate'' control (involving spatial or temporal transpositions [Rossetti, Y., & Pisella, L. (2003). Mediate responses as direct evidence for intention: Neuropsychology of Not to-, Not now- and Not there-tasks. In S. Johnson (Ed.), Cognitive Neuroscience perspectives on the problem of intentional action (pp. 67-105). MIT Press.])-with VA as typical disturbance. Preserved visuo-manual guidance in patients with VA is restricted to immediate goal-directed guidance, they exhibit deficits for delayed or pantomimed actions. 3.A ventro-dorsal pathway (involving the more ventral part of the parietal lobe and the pre-motor and pre-frontal areas): for complex planning and programming relying on high representational levels with a more bilateral organisation or an hemispheric lateralisation-with mirror apraxia, limb apraxia and spatial neglect as representatives. Mirror apraxia is a deficit that affects both hands after unilateral inferior parietal lesion with the patients reaching systematically and repeatedly toward the virtual image in the mirror. Limb apraxia is localized on a more advanced conceptual level of object-related actions and results from deficient integrative, computational and ''working memory'' capacities of the left inferior parietal lobule. A component of spatial working memory has recently been revealed also in spatial neglect consecutive to lesion involving the network of the right inferior parietal lobule and the right frontal areas. We conclude by pointing to the differential temporal constraints and integrative capabilities of these parallel visuo-motor pathways as keys to interpret the neuropsychological deficits.
