I found Rhett's writings to be ironically similar in style to those of his nemesis, Jefferson Davis: rigid, self-righteous, and self-important. This book does, however, provide valuable insights into workings of the mind of a radical secessionist. The modern reader will frequently take issue with Rhett's ideas, but seeing how Rhett thought is useful in itself. William C. Davis does his usual excellent job of illuminating the text with insightful endnotes. The only flaw I found in the book is that the endnotes probably should be footnotes because they are so helpful in understanding Rhett's writings as well as Rhett's historical context. Leaving the notes in the back makes them less convenient and useful to the reader. Overall, I recommend this to the student of the secession crisis.

Marchand and Postman do an excellent job with this biography on an unusual media prophet/quack. Reading about McLuhan's childhood, education, and work helped explain a lot about the man and his ideas. The book reads very well, and puts a lot of his ideas in a context that makes them easier to understand. If you're just starting to study McLuhan, this book is a great starting point. Also check out "McLuhan for Beginners" for a very quick and fun overview.

If you buy into the idea that naturally occurring compounds have been around long enough for us to be tolerant of them, or created with DNA similar to our own and also well tolerated, this will be of great interest.
Great Alternative to Dangerous Drugs with Side Effects.......2007-03-14
This is a terrific book with excellent alternatives to overly prescribed drugs. Let's face it. If you go to your doctor with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, etc., you are going to leave the office with a drug that has multiple side effects. Not only that, taking several different drugs each day can lead to numerous dangerous interactions that your doctor can't possibly calculate. This book offers safe alternatives with impressive results similar to taking a drug, but without the liver and kidney damage, headaches, nausea, etc.

You must be kidding me "Doctor". I think Doctor Dre has more "doctor" cred than you. Unbelievable what people will do these days. Read his bio. He has a phony degree from a phony university. If he presented his Pacific Ph.D in a government job he would be risking arrest. In fact they don't even have a doctoral program anymore because they got nailed on it. Look it up. Beware of someone who claims they are a doctor when they are not. Read his bio, go look up Pacific Western University.

I was looking for an alternative to the prescriptions I had been taking because of the side effects. This book gave me guidance as to what direction to take. Dr. Mindell is a wonderful writer and I have taken his vitamins and am now relying on his knowledge to replace prescriptions with natural remedies.

My favorite cookbook.......2000-01-27
I've used all the Cooking Light cookbooks - this is the one I always return to. I can always find something when I'm searching for a menu plan. I haven't found a mediocre dish in this book yet. Great variety and lots of choices for the basics (like: chicken etc). Easy, clear directions using mostly have-on-hand or easy to find ingredients.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2000-01-11
This is the cookbook that I return to again and again - every recipe in it has been a hit with my husband (who doesn't realize that what he's eating is "healthy) and myself. The recipes are usually quick to prepare, call for a minimum number of "unusual" ingredients (I hate it when I have to buy $30 in spices to prepare a single dish, and that's not the case with this collection), and taste fresh without tasting low fat.

I am not a great cook so I love the short and easy recipes. Also, the beautiful pictures are truly inspirational. Best of all, the recipes actually turned out the way described! Highly recommended for health conscious, non-chef/good cook wannabes.

This book has lots of pretty colored pictures, and much landscaping information, but if you are looking for information on growing vegetables in Alaska, this is not the boook for you! Vegetables rate barely a mention, and the index is almost useless! It makes a nice coffee table book, but I would not consider it a good investment if you are really looking for a good Alaskan garden reference. It should have had "landscaper's" in the title, instead of "gardener's."

My copy of this book is well worn with use. I consider this book a must for the Alaskan gardener. The format is alphabetical and covers most flowers, vegetables, trees, shrubs, etc... that do well in Alaska. Lenore Hedla seems well aware that gardening in the North has a lot of room for growth and experimentation. If you live in Alaska and wish to garden here you will love this book!

Yet these were all fairly won by Samuel Lover, a brilliant, modest, self-reliant Irishman. Samuel Lover, born in Dublin in 1797, went to Dublin University. He fled his father's stockbroking office and became an accomplished miniaturist and marine painter until failing eyesight forced him to abandon that craft. First published in 1842, Handy Andy was, according to The Dublin Monitor, "Decidedly the best story of the day, full of frolic, genuine fun, and exquisite touches of Irish humour". A series of sketches depicting life in Ireland in the mid-19th century with the hero, Handy Andy being faced with a number of situations in which he always made the wrong decision -or at least -his actions were always met with failure. Tales of Andy Rooney and his Irish country life and the peasantry. Lover produced a number of Irish songs, of which several, including The Angel's Whisper, Molly Bawn, and The Four-Leaved Shamrock, attained great popularity. He also wrote some novels, of which Rory O' More (in its first form a ballad), and Handy Andy are the best known, and short Irish sketches, which, with his songs, he combined into a popular entertainment called Irish Nights. He joined with Dickens in founding Bentley's Magazine, and he was the founder of the Dublin University Magazine. Originally published in 1880, this biography was written by a close personal friend who was given access by Mrs. Lover to her late husband's correspondence and manuscripts, together with such information and explanations as she alone could furnish.

What A Bunch Of Bull.......2007-07-21
This was a horrible book. I bought this audio book because of all the positive feedback that I read. I listened to it and could not believe what an idiot the author is. He goes on and on about things he thinks he knows something about and therefore considers himself an expert. He is so full of himself and boring. His monotone voice is enough to make you want to shoot yourself.
The only truth that will set you free is to know that this audio book isn't worth a darn and that the author is making a fortune spreading his bull around.

Near page 150 (varies with different editions), the author writes, "raising your self-esteem is up to you. You can build self-esteem in a prison cell, in solitary confinement even. It does not depend on the thoughts or actions of other human beings."
I'd like to know that source for that info. Surveys done with women show that more than 3/4ths of women rely on a romantic partner to increase their self-esteem. Pulling one's self up by one's own bootstraps is more than a physical impossibility; it's also mighty tough if you've never heard good things about yourself.
That aside, the book does have some pearls of wisdom and it was an enjoyable read. It didn't get bogged down in too much detail or too many anecdotes, but had a good blend of stories, humor, poignant insights and inspirational ideas.

Lots of parts of motherhood are hard, exhausting and ... just plain gross. Laughter is the best way - if not the only way - to get through the tough stuff with as few scars as possible. This is the perfect book to fuel laughter and levity in motherhood.
Frustrated because your kid pooped his pants? Pissed because you just discovered a rotting milk cup under the driver's seat of your car? Exasperated because you haven't slept more than an hour stretch for weeks? Kari's hilarious compilation of commiseration will help you laugh through all that. This is exactly what I needed several weeks after the birth of my second son, while I witnessed my firstborn flip out the minute we came home from the hospital. I recommend this book for all post-partum moms - regardless of how many babies they've already birthed. It makes us realize that we are not alone - and, most importantly, that there are fleeting moments of humor even in the most difficult, exhausting and pathetic times.

As far as board books go, this is a very good one, however it says it's drawn by some of the best Japanese artists. I've seen Japanese art way better than what's in this book. Since I draw Mewtwo a lot, I noticed a lot of faults in the pictures of him. Some were even quite scary looking. I'd buy this book only if you are a true collector.

This is such a nice set. They each have such orginal illustrations of the pokemon. I adore the beautiful art in these. It is always fun to play find the hidden pokemon as well.
