Fabulous resource.......2003-07-20

This truly is a fabulous resource! The information is quite straightforward and covers a wide array of areas/issues that are certain to be impacted by the news of a loved one being ill. The components of the book cover areas such as understanding your feelings, how our fears play out in the ordeal, how to have conversations regarding the illness and ramifications of the illness, how to find resourceful medical care and how to balance one's role in life given the situation.

I would highly recommend this book for people who are going through the challenge of a loved one being ill, as it applies to not only cancer patients - but all who have serious health issues.

My spouse had heart disease. At the same time, I was looking for a book for a friend with cancer. I found Precious and read it before giving it as a gift. I realized the suggestions applied to my family. I started using the author's ideas immediately and it helped us tremendously. I find myself quoting her often in my volunteer work at church (with patients) and with friends. One friend called and said she was having serious problem coping with her husband's diabetes. She read the book and called to tell me that after following the advice in Precious, she saw a dramatic change in the way her family communicated and supported each other. Another friend said she was in an argument with her daughter about the father's illness. The mother used the suggestions in the book to calm her daughter down. Later that evening, the daughter (in her 30s) came up to her mom and said, "Thank you. What you said and how you said it was wonderful!" This book should not even have cancer on the cover. Having been put on a low sodium diet recently I have been searching high and low for alternative recipes for indian cooking. Mrs Lakhani's book does a decent job of explaining how and why dietary changes must be made. I did find the lack of pictures a little discouraging and a few of the recipes I did try out have not turned out as well as I would like. But then what is food without a little fat and a little salt?? Bleah!!
The book also provides chapters on the scientific side of dietary changes but i'm afraid I found that a little dull :( If you are looking for low fat / low sodium cookbooks (indian) i highly recommend Secrets of fat free cooking by Priya Kulkarni and Anita Ranade. Every recipe I've tried from that book has been wonderful and they have a sizeable segment on non vegetarian cooking!

excellent authentic recipes with nutritional information.......2000-09-01

As an indian I can tell you, these recipes are as close as you can get to authentic indian while staying low fat.

I must admit this cookbook sat on my shelf for a long time because I loved Mathu Jaffrey's time consuming and complexly spiced recipes if I was going to use a cookbook. The cooking we have always done at home used alot of specialty ingredients and took a lot of time, it seemed to me that simple low fat indian couldn't be any good.

BUT I WAS WRONG! The recipes in this book are EXCELLENT. Very close to authentic while using ingredients you can find almost anywhere and VERY HEALTHY. Imagine that!

The recipes in this book are low-fat, low cholesterol and low sodium while being very flavorful and fresh tasting. The nutritional lable at the end each recipe is very complete also. For example, for beef samosa's, she has 2 different ways of cooking them, fried or baked. Then she includes 2 nutrient analysis for each way of cooking it. VERY NICE!

Also each nutrient analysis has a breakdown for sodium with salt included and sodium content without AND a saturated fat versas total fat breakdown.

The last 40 pages have info on :

indian spices and their usages and flavor

American, British, Australian, and Metric conversion

oven temperture conversion : F versas Celcius

explaination of proteins, fats, carbs, and sodium Table of desirable weights for men and women

differences in cholesterol cooked and raw

balanced diet info

and a nutritional breakdown table of "common" foods although it includes items like lentils, bulgar and veal.

The only minus is that this book has diagrams (for somosa wrapping etc.) but no color pictures. :(

Overall I'd say this is a wonderful book for people interested in fitness or dieting and exotic foods! Not a single item in this book is swimming in fat, like most indian cookbooks are.

I would buy this book for cooking for myself daily and a Muthu Jaffrey's (high fat) cookbooks for cooking for special occassions and guests.

Defionately buy this book, it lives up to it name!

Another good cookbook low fat cookbook I would recomend is "Easy Exotic : A Model's Low-Fat Recipes from Around the World" mostly indian, some asian. Very good too!

Easy & Healthy Alternative!.......2000-01-02

I was looking for an alternative to the traditional southern black eye peas & greens New Year meal. I found it in Mrs. Lakhani's book. The black eyed pea salad and curried spinach recipes were easy to make and very tasty. As I looked through the book I found many recipes that I can't wait to try. She has a great selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian recipes.

Every state needs one of these.......2001-05-29

This book is extremely well-researched and every state should have one like it. The book covers the status and distribution of the 443 that have been observed in the state. Each bird has a text overview including breeding, winter, and migration ranges and elevation distribution, relative abundance of each species by region and season, and unusual records, birds of special concern in Colorado, and historical changes in distribution. The beginning of the book has a really useful section on the different habitats, too. A great resource for a Colorado birder!

When viewing the magnificent floral forms that Candace Kling creates, it's sometimes hard to believe that they are actually pleated, gathered, ruched, and twisted ribbons--not the real thing. Her gorgeous ribbon flowers appear to be extremely intricate and complicated, but her extensive directions and diagrams take the mystery out of recreating everything from roses to pansies to poppies to daffodils. After nearly two decades of researching antique ribbon work, her knowledge of vintage pieces is evident in much of her work and in her finely tuned sense of color. The many photos of vintage ribbon-work flowers, not to mention those of her own artistry, are themselves worth the price of the book.

The Best Directions Ever!.......2006-09-02

I've seen most of the ribbon flower books that there are--and this is pretty much the best. It has instructions that are clear and very easy to follow and there are so many different ideas for you to use. Not just a couple of projects--so many for you to combine. I have taken this book out of the library so many times that I wanted to keep it. Then I remembered I could buy it online!!!

In comparison to the other books available, it has more projects and I think the directions are easier.

If you love ribbon flowers (I make them as accessories in a business partnership) you will absolutely love this book!

The Best book on Ribbonwork!.......2005-09-22

This is the best book on ribbonwork. It incorporates many beautiful pictures of vintage and some contemporary work. The entire book is instructional (no silly projects to fill the pages!!!). The instructions are excellent and this is as close to a "beginners" introduction to the subject as I have been able to find. At first I was disappointed that there were very few photographs of instructions. Often the instructions use drawings and often drawings are the only examples of the completed piece. But, what I have come to love is the lack of pictures for instruction. This book achieves something many art/craft books fail to. It requires you to practice, to use a variety materials and to create your own color combinations. It makes the "copying" of another's work no concern, because basically, you cannot. The subject is so well covered you will have an understanding of it: from foliage, to flowers, to stabilizing your work for wear on clothing, hats, and pins, to stems and buds, to flat and dimensional, to texture and how to preserve your work, etc. I haven't found a better book and I do not expect to. I thank the author for covering subjects like the movement, or "dance," of the work and for challenging me with the drawings - to try it and then see how it looks. Last but not least, the author introduces a great way to figure how much ribbon you will need to make any project using any ribbon width! So you can make ANY size flower you want. Ms. Kling makes your journey an unexpectedly easy fall - into a creative medium more satisfying than anything I've dabbled in besides beads - which one can incorporate too, of course.

Absolute "Eye Candy" for the "Ribbonaholic".......2005-08-07

This book has got to be one of the best and most comprehensive books out there on ribbonwork. It not only showcases the antique items where the colors have faded to perfect glory, but also incorporates the new and runs the gamut from embroidering with silk ribbon to forming flowers and bows of the ribbons.

This book is a wealth of inspiration and a source of continual referral for most any project using ribbon and will keep it's prominent place on my bookshelf!

In encyclopedic fashion, it covers plants and gardening techniques/terms (compost, double-digging, hardiness zones, irrigation, etc.). The wide margins accomodate drawings that help identify the plants.
Pluses: It includes several varieties for each plant and includes the growth habits of those.
Drawbacks: no color photos of the plants, it's hard to cover topics like "rock gardens" in three paragraphs.

Subtitle isn't accurate........2005-08-23

Simply put, this book is not for birth parents, it's for the birth mother. The subtitle should be changed. The "voice" of the book is talking to the birth mother as the only interested birth parent, and even though some brief paragraphs refer to the birth father, he is treated not as a reader of the book, but in the third person, for example, "What if the adoptee asks about the birth father? What should you say?" Well, how about "I'm him."

I have been on a recent tear through libraries, databases and book stores to adequately research reunions of adoptees with their bioparents. One word of caution to anyone going through this same process: this book has a Canadian perspective, so contends with Canadian adoption laws. Through no fault of Ms. McColm, this is my number one complaint about the reviews that enticed me into reading this book. Another obstacle the reader must overcome is the author's overwhelming efforts to be politically correct for everyone. I felt that some of the book's honesty and integrity was sacrificed in order not to ruffle any feathers. The truth is, adoption is an issue of many, many nuances and many generations have different terms for similar things. I think the author might have been more effective if she had written from her heart and her experiences, and not been so worried about her audience.

As an adult adoptee who is in the throes of a reunion, this book was a wonderful addition to my library. It was sent to me from my birth mother, and it has opened my eyes to what she (and my adoptive parents) may be going through at this juncture in our relationships. The author, an adoptee, shares what she went through before, during and after her own reunion with candor and helpful hints (even listing them at the end of each chapter). She is also involved in organizations that allow her to talk with other members of the triad, who share their stories about reunions, reliquishments and adoptions. It is a very specific book, as well. It reads very much like a handbook (with specific organizations to join, specific agencies, etc.) for a reunion. What I found particularly helpful about the book was the middle several chapters in which she divides the reunion--from backstage through "You're On" through Post Reunion. It is also appealing for all three parts of the adoption, as she takes the time to discuss the issues that anyone any place on the triad may be concerned about, what they may feeling, or how they may be acting. The first few chapters were either too general (history) or too specific (about certain agencies that do not relate to all adoptions), but overall it was a wonderful, insightful book about the reunion process.

This book is the first to examine the life and work of Richard Caton Woodville (1825-1855), an antebellum genre painter and shrewd observer of urban society and politics. Before Woodville died at thirty, he produced a small body of work that includes such iconic pieces as Politics in an Oyster House (1848) and War News from Mexico (1848). In lively prose complemented by vivid illustrations, Justin Wolff presents all the available information on the elusive Woodville and perceptively analyzes practically every work of art he produced. In doing so, Wolff shows that Woodville's paintings engaged their moment in history in surprisingly complex ways.

The scion of a distinguished Baltimore family, Woodville dropped out of medical school against his father's wishes and moved to Germany to study painting at the famed Düsseldorf Academy. Before his early death, from an overdose of morphine, Woodville traveled to France and England, returning to the United States only twice. However, most paintings by this expatriate focus on American social and political life and were exhibited at the American Art-Union, a New York organization that patronized and popularized the fine arts.

Wolff investigates Woodville's career in the context of the fragile alliances between nationalism, capitalism, and the cultural marketplace in the 1840s and 1850s. Like a few other unconventional painters and authors of the period (Herman Melville in particular), Woodville treated common subjects--slavery, the Mexican War, the penny press, drinking, gambling, and confidence games--with his own distinctive biases and mannered stylizations.

Wolff argues persuasively that the dubbing of antebellum genre painting as simply "scenes of everyday life" misrepresents its convoluted and sometimes subversive meanings. Woodville was in fact a modern painter--a painter of his complicated times. With this definitive work, one of America's most intriguing artists is no longer one of the least understood.
