        Book Description

1896. This work is not intended for classical scholars or professed Platonists; but rather for the large and increasing class of students who do not wish to be debarred altogether from an acquaintance with Greek literature by their ignorance of the Greek language. For the benefit of such readers I have endeavored, with the help of extracts selected mostly from Plato, to draw a picture of Socrates' relation to his immediate entourage and to Athenian society in general. Contents: Athens Before and After the Persian Wars; The Part Played by Socrates in History; Socrates in Plato's Dialogues: The Sophists; The Better Teachers of the Time: Gorgias and Protagoras; The Worse Teachers: Euthydemus and Thrasymachus; Socrates Among the Young: Lysis and Charmides; The Symposium; The Xenophontic Socrates; The Clouds; Trial and Death of Socrates; and The Story of Er.

        Book Description

Topselling author Harriet Lerner is at her provocative best in this well–received examination of fear, anxiety, and shame, the three key emotions that she believes cause all unhappiness.

Using her wonderfully rich and inviting therapeutic voice, along with personal memories and examples drawn from her practice, Lerner gives fear and its accompanying negative emotions, anxiety and shame, their due.

Anxiety, fear and shame can wash over us like a tidal wave or operate as a silent thrum under the surface of our daily lives. With stories that are sometimes hilarious and sometimes heart–breaking, Lerner takes us from 'fear–lite' and mild anxiety to deep dread, shame and terror.

No–one signs up for anxiety, fear and shame, but we can't avoid them, either. The more we can look these emotions in the eye, with patience and curiosity, and the more we learn to spot their wisdom and mischief, the less grip they have on us. As we learn to respond to the three key emotions in new ways, we can live more fully in the present and move into the future with courage, clarity, humour and hope.

4 out of 5 stars good solid Harriet Lerner.......2007-06-14

I read this book after having read The Dance of Intimacy several months ago. The Dance of Intimacy was like a huge wake-up call for me, whereas this book was very interesting and helpful, just not as earth-shattering. I am generally an anxious person, and I did learn a little bit about living with my anxiety and not making it worse. But I didn't connect with all the stories the way I did with the previous Lerner book I read. I still think Harriet Lerner is an amazing insightful woman. I'm glad that I read and bought this book, but maybe my expectations were a little too high. I would give the book 3 1/2 stars if I could.

        4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-01-29

Great book and good way to understand how to manage your anxieties and fears. This book will not make your fears go away, but rather enable you to work with them. A pratical approach.

5 out of 5 stars Fear not the fear.......2006-12-31

A wonderfully written and highly applicable book that highlights the importance of tuning into fear, anxiety, and shame for the underlying wisdom and guidance they provide, instead of simply seeing them as unbearable emotions to avoid at all costs. This book is bound to be helpful for anyone whose fear and anxiety make them prisoners of their home, workplace, and inner thoughts.

        5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2006-11-01

Anxiety, panice attack and depression, these are all clinical problems that sometimes need medication, but you can't get a complete cure unless you remove the sourse of them. You need to increase your wisdom to better see the problem. I found this book amazing in this job. You can feel the ocean of wisdom in her words.

5 out of 5 stars look at your shadows.......2006-01-02

Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE DANCE OF FEAR as book about the tangled tango of life with people -- sometimes you lead & sometimes you follow, & if you know what makes you tick, who's doing what isn't nearly as important as who's in charge of you, & that talking it out is the one thing that really helps.

Dr. Lerner doesn't write trite self-help hand books, the questions she asks & the answers people give her set the scene for her articulate insights. Take time to read THE DANCE OF FEAR because it's about what these emotions are, how we behave because of them, what harm happens when we don't know what's driving us, & how we react to events, great & small, that have us frozen in the headlights or hiding away from life.

          Book Description

Hemochromatosis is one of modern medicine's greatest oversights. An inherited metabolic iron disorder, it is most common in people of northern European descent and most prominent among Scotch-Irish. For people with metabolic iron disorders, controlling one's intake of iron contributes to wellness and the prevention of such chronic diseases as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver disease, impotence, and depression.

Cooking With Less Iron is designed specifically for those who suffer from such iron disorders. It has chapters on appetizers, salads, fruits and vegetables, main courses (including casseroles), breads and muffins, and desserts.

I have Hemochromatosis and I was unable to enjoy many foods because of the disorder, now because of this book, I can cook quality food, that tastes good and is healthy for my body. Iron overload is no fun, and from my personal opinion it seems to be Cheryl Garrison and Iron Disorders Institute that have given the best advice. Thanks for the advice.

5 out of 5 stars A Second Serving of Excellence!.......2002-01-25

The Iron Disorders Institute has served up a heaping
helping of EXCELLENCE with "Cooking With Less Iron"!

Despite popular opinion that "diet does not count" in
controlling iron, I've long been mindful of my Hemochromatosis
husband's diet. How could it not count? If you want to lose
weight, you monitor fats and calories. If you're a diabetic, you
monitor sugars and carbohydrates. If you're a heart patient,
you monitor fats and cholesterol. If you happen to have
          Iron Overload......YOU MONITOR IRON!

Once again, the Iron Disorders Institute has reigned with a
cool head and educational approach. "Iron is an essential
nutrient, human beings could not survive without it. We can
enjoy the BEST of health when all nutrients are in balance and
adequate amounts are available for normal body function without
          creating harmful excesses".

What an education the book offers with regard to metabolism,
iron absorption and diet! There are so many things, even a
"true believer" like myself did not know (nor had I thought of)!
Marinating flank steak in a mixture that includes coffee??
Boil pasta in water that contains brewed tea?? Far beyond the
"basics" I've learned so many "tricks" that allows my husband a
terrific, tasty menu, containing the iron he needs to remain healthy, and excluding excess iron to add to his stores.

I've tried many recipes before offering an opinion, and all have
been absolutely wonderful. Anything BUT bland and boring,
and I especially appreciate the graphics for each and every recipe that tell me exactly which ingredients are substances that inhibit the absorption of non-heme iron. I find myself thinking of just that educational tool while preparing other traditional family recipes! I am learning!!

Hemochromatosis is forever, as are those maintenance phlebotomies
to regulate stored iron. This is exactly the kind of tool that can help us extend the period between needed extractions! Thank you so much IDI, you did it again!! (More please!)

Last week I cut my hair, bought some boys' clothes and shoes, wrapped a

large ACE bandage around my chest to flatten my fortunately-not-large

breasts, and began looking for a new name.

Angela Katz-McNair has never felt quite right as a girl. Her whole life

is leading up to the day she decides to become Grady, a guy. While coming

out as transgendered feels right to Grady, he isn't prepared for the

reaction he gets from everyone else. His mother is upset, his younger

sister is mortified, and his best friend, Eve, won't acknowledge him in

public. Why can't people just let Grady be himself?

Grady's life is miserable until he finds friends in some unexpected places

-- like the school geek, Sebastian, who explains that there is precedent

in the natural world (parrotfish change gender when they need to, and the

newly male fish are the alpha males), and Kita, a senior who might just be

                Grady's first love.

From acclaimed writer Ellen Wittlinger, this is the groundbreaking story of

one teen's search for self and his struggle for acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any forward-thinking collection which would consider gay and transgender teen issues........2007-10-07

The struggles of a transgender teen usually are not explored by youth audiences or in publications for youth - which is why PARROTFISH is such a breakthrough for young adults. The fictional story of Grady, whose coming of age involves a newfound realization of differences between her physical form and inner identity, makes for an important, breakthrough book essential for any forward-thinking collection which would consider gay and transgender teen issues.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those who know life and love is complicated.......2007-09-08

Once again, Ellen Wittlinger captures a teen voice in all its cynicism, humor, and edge of vulnerability. I loved the inner dialog in PARROTISH, where Grady plays out what strikes him, and me, as what people are really thinking behind their spoken words. This is often funny in that I've-been-there way.

The novel begins with the dad beginning his Christmas decoration obsession, and here we see Grady shift in a new identity as guy, while remaining good older daughter. We soon meet great minor characters like Sebastian, whose interest in science teaches us about parrotfish and gender. Small changes follow small changes - family feelings shift, Grady falls in love, Grady worries about dancing like a boy -- toward big moments, such as the scene when mom at last calls Grady by his chosen name. People who care about issues facing teens will like this book, but so will people who care about anyone. PARROTFISH shows how something uncommon happens to an the ordinary sort of family, one where on "a normal evening we were lucky if somebody managed to get the silverware matched up to a plate, much less on the correct side of it."

The book ends with almost as many questions as answers. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-07-10

Angela Katz-McNair isn't your typical teenage girl. She is, in fact, a boy. Sure, she may have the body parts that science uses to dictate her gender, but, in this case at least, science has gotten it all wrong.

Shortly before Christmas, Angela announces to her family that she's decided to act on the issue of being a boy trapped in the body of a girl. Her name is now Grady. She's cut her hair short and she's wearing boy's clothes. Grady is determined to make the change permanent, and as complete as he possibly can.

He starts by announcing his decisions to his family, which is met with assorted reactions. His dad seems to take the news in stride; after all, Grady was always a tomboy who did "guy stuff" with him anyway. His sister, Laura, is sure that Grady is out to ruin her life, and her high school experience. His younger brother, Charlie, doesn't care all that much, as long as the news doesn't affect his video game playing. And his mother, well, his mother isn't at all sure what to think, how to act, or what to do.

Since Grady is determined, he doesn't just turn into a transgendered person at home. He makes his intentions known at school, too, and you can probably guess what some of the consequences are. Friends are no longer friends; indifferent acquaintances become outright enemies. But there are also bright moments in Grady's new life: he makes a new best friend, Sebastian, who introduces him to the scientific wonder of the parrotfish, an ocean fish who can, and does, change gender. He also finds allies in Russ and Kita, a powerhouse high school super-couple who raise new questions in Grady's mind when he starts falling for Kita himself.

PARROTFISH is a wonderful, emotional novel dealing with the issues of identity and transgenderism. Previously, the only other book I've read on the matter is Julie Anne Peter's Luna, in which a girl was born in the body of a boy. I have to say that both novels are wonderful, and for teens questioning their own identity, are more than just a good read. Ms. Wittlinger has also included resources in the back of PARROTFISH for help and support. Overall, this is a great work of fiction, but it's also a great story dealing with one teen's struggle to find himself outside of society's norm.

3 out of 5 stars Important Novel That Just Misses the Mark.......2007-07-08

I thought this novel was okay. It was well written, as all of Wittlinger's book are. She had wonderful characters and quite a bit of humor. I really liked everyone, especially Sebastian. I hope there's someone in real life just like him! Angela/Grady was very easy to like and understand.

My problem with it is that Grady's transgendered natured seemed to... technical. For me, the book on scratched the surface on how it feels to be transgender. It felt secondhand and distant. And for someone who claims not to like labels, Grady sure loves to use them. "Transgendered" and "Gender Dysphoria" were thrown around true to dictionary definitions.

Basically, the core of this story reads like an afterschool special, not a true-to-life drama and that takes away from the overall quality of the story. I'd recommend Luna over this one. And for a great novel that features a boy named Grady, definitely check out Target by Kathleen Jeffrie Johnson!

                    Book Description

Are you ready to discover the treasures to be found in a coral reef?

Jim Arnosky is an excellent guide. He bases his uniquely informative narrative on explorations he and his wife, Deanna, made near the Florida Keys in waters once sailed by pirates. Talking directly to his readers, Jim Arnosky melds art and text to create an original, engrossing nonfiction picture book.

If you've ever wondered about life underwater, this is a book you'll enjoy.

Wow, I didn't realize Amazon offered Video reviews ! Next time....meanwhile, I am returning this book. Not worth the postage in my opinion. And, from the look of the corners and edges, I may not be the first to have returned this particular book. That alone would have no bearing on whether I liked the book or not, I only mention it as a 'heads up' to others considering ordering it.
I consider most of the projects to be very time consuming,AND way out of proportion to the value of the finished piece. Funny thing is the text refers to the placesetting favors as treasured keepsakes,.... I think not.

                          3 out of 5 stars good ideas.......2005-05-15

There were some good ideas in this book. Unlike the invitation book, they didn't seem to be as origional. There were also favor ideas that wouldn't really be useful for most weddings. However, there were some cute ideas, I liked the tags they used for place settings. There were some tips that I wasn't aware of before reading the book. I do have to admit there are a couple of things that we might consider for our reception. I am looking forward to getting the other artful bride book.

                          1 out of 5 stars Martha's employee makes a book........2004-04-08

Following from the previous review where I commented that the projects in this book could have been from 'Martha Stewarts weddings' imagine my amusement when I saw on the back of the book that the Author IS from Martha Stewart's living! Trust me, this book is truly banal.

1 out of 5 stars I sadly missed McFadden in this artful bride book........2004-04-08

Compared to the wonderfully creative and unique original 'Artful Bride' I found `wedding favours', the third book of the artful bride series to be a real let down. I was terribly disappointed so I checked and saw it was only written by one of the two authors of the first book, sadly Graphic Designer Laura Mc Fadden is absent. I found all of the projects in the third book to be rather obvious and lacking in enthusiasm, and especially lacking the edgy well designed feel of the first book, which is a bible for the crafty anti-bride.

Only two of this books projects appealed, but they are no stretch of the imagination for bridal favours either: home made chocolates & bonsai trees, please, I think they lifted those ideas from Martha Stewarts weddings! Overall the feel of the book was of icky bridal triteness, with a lot of pink, heart shapes and a flower on nearly every page. I am waiting for the second book in the series, Invitations, which, unlike `wedding favours' was co-written by Laura Mc Fadden and I hope it will be better.

The good points are it has good tables on conversion - any cookbook has them.

The bad points: few recipes even common ones, obscure organization - want to know about pickles? or applesauce? nope. Wants to be a text book but falls flat on its spine. I won't even donate mine to the school library. Shoot don't be a sucker on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative but beware..........2002-08-01

This book contains a wealth of information. Both the size and paper selection on the pages scream "texbook" and perhaps it is for culinary institutes. It's a good reference books but don't expect any enticing or artistic color photos.

I had bought this book because I accidentally grew a 9 foot tall tomato "tree" and wanted to know what the heck I was going to do with 48 pounds of tomatoes...and boy, does this book have answers for that!

Whether you're an experienced canner or just someone trying to figure out how to preserve what you just grew, this is the book to have. Not only does it cover the basics, such as jelly bags, what-the-heck-is-pectin, blanching, steam canning vs. pressure canning, and basic safetey tips, it also conatins dozens of recipies and hints for experienced canners as well. Also included are hints on preserving dried and frozen fruits, and how to make "fruit leather"....which I tried, and its VERY yummy!

All in all, I'd wager that this is one cooking reference that you'll keep in the kitchen, collecting food stains, not on a shelf in the living room collecting dust.

I did enjoy this book as it was my first introduction to magnet therapy. This is a topic that I intend to explore much further too. It was very helpful and gave good information.

3 out of 5 stars Magnet Therapy Works.......2005-05-17

What the authors say in regards to the differences of the two poles of each and every magnet, is based on the research of Albert Roy Davis and Walter C. Rawls. Davis was the first scientist in the world to discover that magnetism consists of two separate and distinct energies, not one.

Some of the information is not completely accurate in this book. It's a decent book, but I'd recommend buying a book by Davis and Rawls.

William H. Philpott, M.D., Dwight K. Kalita, Ph.D., and Burton Goldberg teamed up to write Magnet Therapy, a comprehensive guide to using magnets in the prevention and cure of disease.

The authors explain that "electromagnetic energy is an integral part of the human body. It can help produce illness and help bring healing, depending on its type and strength." We are surrounded by electromagnetism--nearly everything produces magnetic fields, including the human body. Magnets have two poles--north, or positive; and south, or negative. Generally, negative magnetic fields are used in healing. Positive can be used only in special instances and under medical supervision.

The authors clearly explain the sources of magnetism and how it works in the body. They then describe, in general, how negative electromagnetic fields are used to stimulate the body's ability to heal.

The bulk of the book is devoted to listing of 35 health conditions, complete with a description of causes and detailed instructions on using magnet therapy to prevent and heal each condition. Health problems discussed include addictions, heart disease, diabetes, children's ailments, and reproductive organ diseases.

"While magnet therapy may just now be gaining more widespread use and popularity in the United States and elsewhere, the use of magnetic energy for healing dates back thousands of years." Magnet Therapy provides all the information readers need to begin using this ancient technique to improve and maintain their health.

I was delighted to discover this lush volume on the work of the canadian artist F.S. Coburn.
The quality of the photographic reproductions of his paintings is superb, and the text is both entertaining and informative.
The author has managed to capture not only Coburn's uniqueness, but also his diversity.
This elegant coffee-table book is a must buy for those who enjoy art and a good read.
