Good for beginners.......2004-04-11

If you're looking for a book which focuses on Hitler's private life, forget it, you'll have to look elsewhere. The book is decidedly weak in explaining Hitler as a human being. However, there is strength in the military aspects of the book. Hitler's rational for attacking the Soviet Union and his inexplicable (and stupid! decision to declare on the USA on Dec. 11, 1941, are explored in some detail. Remember, this is a very basic work, intended for beginners or people who have a limited grasp og WWII. If you're a serious scholar of the era, this will not be your cup of tea. But if you're just starting to read about World War II and Hitler, this is not a bad start.

This is a great book.......2000-11-15

Whether you be a beginner, a recreational player, of any age, or a professional tennis player this is a book people at all levels of ability will want to read. It is a great book for anyone who likes to play tennis. Dr. Murray writes very well and his insights on the mental aspects of the game, which are so important, will help all of us play better tennis.

Mental equipment is truly important.......2000-11-07

Mr. Murray does an excellent job of proving that "mental equipment" is helpful and beneficial to your game. I truly believe that you can't operate to your fullest physically without aid from the mental side of the game. The only thing that I was less than satisfied with is that he dedicates majority of his book to illustrate how mental equipment is important, but offers little assistance in improving your mental equipment. He uses excellent examples and truly illustrates his point clearly and directly. As for tips on how to improve your mental equipment, he has only offered about 1-2 pages worth of advice. For example, he spends 32 out of 34 pages of the chapter on attentional control, explaining the different types of attentional control, the problems with attention (such as:excessive stress, choking, etc.), and also explains how having selective attention and concentration is highly useful. He goes on to tell you the optimal effects of stress on attention. The only problem with all this is that after illustrating all the problems, and explaining where you need to be in terms of attention control, he offeres little advice to explain how to achieve the optimal attention control. In fact, only 2 pages out of 34 were actual advice on how to improve attention control and find that state of effortless effort commonly called the "zone" by tennis players. But, one must give Mr. Murray credit for writing a book on the mental game as very few books are written on this subject effectively. Afterall, isn't the human mind very complex? My suggestion is to buy the book if you want to learn about his philosophy on the mental game of tennis, but if you want advice on how to improve the mental game, then you might be slightly disappointed unless your satisfied with the 2 pages of every chapter dedicated to specific tips for improving.

Your book Smart Tennis is very smart. Congratulations ! It was a pleasure for me to read it, to learn many new tips about mental tennis and to understand more about psychology.

I would like to give you my personal comments :

1. I am a tennis player and a management consultant. And I found many similarities between those two worlds : what is good for the tennis player is also appropriate for the management consultant. And it guides me in both sectors. 2. I appreciate the structure of the book and its positive philosophy. It's easy to read and to remember. Your book is my new « livre de chevet ». 3. I completed the test (TMBC) in Chapter 1. My first surprise is that my strength is Imagery and, for me, the most impressive chapter is Imagery. You have focused on new dimensions and it is very practical for me. 4. Your book seems to be complete from the beginner to the professional. But, you know, life curve for any professional is like an Inverted U : growth, top, and decline. What about the time when a professional realizes that he is at the beginning of his decline or really declining ? It's an important question and a painful period for a professional during which he needs psychological support. A question that can be answered, maybe, in your monthly column Mental Equipment ! Or in Smart Tennis II ! 5. I would have a suggestion : your Tennis Mind-Body Checklist (TMBC) could be answered on your Web Site (Dr. John's Smart Tennis Site) with the results and their interpretations. By doing so, it would be both a marketing tool for your book and an easy interactive tool for the tennis player or any other professional ! 6. Your book is so interesting that my wife, Suzanne, who has a degree in translation, thinks it would be a good idea to translate it in French. The market is so big !

The book starts with a test to help you determine where you have the largest opportunity for improvement, then each chapter covers a specific need area. The book helped me immediately in a match and I hadn't even finished the book. However, I'm having difficulty with the goal setting area as the writer recommends making goals that are measurable (i.e. % of 1st serves in). For me, I don't have a way to measure the starting point or the matches after. Otherwise, it is extremely helpful & I'm determined to find a way to measure these things.

Smart Tennis is the best explanation of mind-body factors in sport that I have read. Murray's knowledge of the tennis player's experience is exceptional. He provides a coherent and flexible set of suggestions that fits different court personalities and help players improve. A great book...

I made a quilt made from the author's pattern at a class for my quilt guild retreat. The technique is not hard the way she describes it. There were some gorgeous ones made. I haven't made anything from the book yet but I hope to do so soon.

I am a psychotherapist in private practice and I sometimes recommend a book to a client to read to help them better understand how to address a specific emotional issue they are struggling with. Sometimes this is quite helpful and sometimes the client never mentions it again.

Over the past several months, I suggested BOY TALK to three separate mothers I am working with and each of them came back to their session with the book in hand, thanking me for providing a resource that made sense to them. They talked about feeling more sure of themselves in terms of understanding their son's needs after reading the book. They also reported using the suggested techniques and tools with a sense of confidence and hopefulness with their sons.

When the Boys are not Your Own, What Do You Do?.......2003-08-15

I've raised five sons and recognize many points from the map laid out in this book. At some points the direction was wisely taken, but not always. I would have found "Boy Talk" helpful back then. Now I am serving as a volunteer advocate for young boys caught up in the oddly misnamed child welfare system. I have used "Boy Talk" as the source of research-based information on both troubled and normal emotional development. Taking care for boys in a society that minimizes the emotional dangers they face in becoming whole, effective adults means you need support from the researchers. Otherwise the prejudices and stereotypes will probably undermine your efforts and keep building emotionally empty men.

an important book.......2003-06-19

I am an elementary school teacher and this book is just what I needed. It's usefullness in the classroom came as a surprise since I read it as a parent interested in my sons' emotional development. Background information about emotions and specific suggestions for supporting boys emotions at different ages (birth to 18) are invaluable. I have always wanted to support my boys' feelings but was reluctant...for all the reasons described in the book. After reading "Boy Talk" I feel freer to provide this support.

I haven't totally changed how I teach or parent. Rather, as the book suggests, I started doing a few small things differently. As a result I have observed fewer behavior problems in the classroom. (I think the boys just generally feel more respected and supported, too.) At home, I notice a closer relationship with my sons.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about boys' emotions but has been afraid to ask.

A Boy How-To...?.......2002-03-27

Are there boys in your life? In your family? Neighborhood? Anywhere? Not the immature, adult version but the true bonafide youth. Then reading this book should be on your "I've gotta do this now" list. Mary Polce-Lynch has crafted a highly accessible piece of work that gets you inside the sometime mysterious world of boys, as defined by today's culture and morals. You know, "boys don't cry" or "boys are tough-being an athlete maks you a real boy" or "boys don't talk about their feelings" or "don't show other guys your feelings" and the list goes on. Boy we have a knack for screwing people up, don't we?
The good doctor delves into the emotionless world of boys as outlined by the infamous "Pack Rules." But she goes beyond just identifying the problems we lay at these guys' feet(at a very early age). She offers a solid guide to raising emotionally complete boys who are able to express their feelings not supress them. And emotionally competent boys grow up to become much better men.
Dr.Polce-Lynch includes her research and clinical experiences to buttress what she has written. All in all, this book is a wonder and a joy to read. It offers a challenge too, to parents or any adult involved with boys to find ways to make them better people, to help them interact positively with the world around them. I have two sons, teenagers now, and this book opened my eyes to what I've done well and not-so-well in raising them. "Boy Talk-How You Can Help Your Son Express His Emotions" is a great guide for helping boys become better boys and superb men. Get it. Read it. Make a difference in a boy's life.

Dempsey ought to know: Once a high flyer at a major brokerage, he now says he succeeded only by cajoling clients into purchases that helped him meet sales goals--whether or not they were appropriate. "If the average investor only knew what really goes on behind the scenes with their money," he once commiserated with a colleague, "they'd think differently about having us manage it." Average investors are harmed every day without realizing it, through commonplace practices at full-service and discount firms alike, as well as Internet investment sites and 401K plans. No longer, promises Mark Dempsey in this compelling book. He exposes these deceitful practices, and teaches investors how to fight back with point-by-point tips and useful warnings. Dempsey reveals that middle-class customers (with personal incomes between $50,000 and $100,000) aren't given access to the same research information and stock-buying tips as their wealthier counterparts, don't have the same opportunities to invest in profitable IPOs, and are regularly encouraged to invest in mutual funds that perform well below the market average. This, despite the fact that they make up two-thirds of the country's investors, and are responsible for the bulk of commissions brokers receive. Not fair, argues Dempsey, and he gives readers the knowledge they need to make the investment world work for them.

This book gave me some real insights into Wall Street and how to protect my money.There is a great deal of honesty here and the writing syle is easy on the eyes, but it did make me think. I wish there were more books like this and Mark Dempsey wherever you are I hope you are helping other people as you have helped me and my family.

Money saving information.......2003-11-04

This book should be required reading for any that either have money or plan to have money in the stock market. Why? Because the tricks of the trade and hidden fees are going to eat into your profits and at the very least you should want to know where your money is going. Thinking of seeing a financial planner? Read this book to arm yourself against some of ploys they might use against you. Using a full service stock broker in your trades? Some of what goes on behind closed doors might surprise you.

You should understand how car salesmen work before buying a car, why not understand how mutual fund salesmen work before investing, especially since the amount of money is probably going to be a much larger amount.

It is the naïve and uninformed get soundly fleeced everyday in the financial markets, at the very least, read this book before making any large financial decisions that involve trusting the advice from a financial advisor, banker or stock broker. These often have built in conflicts of interests that could cost you money.

While pros and those in the know will probably not find anything here new, and stock brokers and other financial salesmen probably hate this book, I strongly recommend it to any that are thinking about entering the financial markets.

Author is a Fortune Teller.......2002-06-24

I can't believe what I read in this book that was published a couple of years ago. The author seems to have a cystal ball when he talked about analysts and how they did the wrong thing by investors. Robbing You Blind also hits the nail on the head when it talks about brokers and their wicked ways. Enron 401k messes are predicted in the book and not one soul seems to have cared to take care of the problem Sadly, the book looks at regulators in a different way giving them little credit in helping investors and standing up for their interests. Recent headlines seem to support the allegations. What is so interesting about this book is that nothing was done to help investors from being robbed blind for so many years. Why, I wonder?
