If you are in the least way interested in hisrory or the founding of the intelligence services in the US; this book is a must have. Every page reveals more excitement in WWII Europe. Probably one of the best books I have had the pleasure of reading.

Mary Gluck introduces us to a Lukács we have never met. Here is Lukács among his friends, lovers, and peers in those important years before 1918, when he converted to Communism and Marxism at the age of thirty-nine.

Georg Lukács claimed in later life that his early achievements lacked genuine coherence, being expressions of a vague "romantic anticapitalism" that only found resolution in his conversion to Marxism. By integrating Lukács with his early generational grouping and making expert use of a new treasure trove of documents from his early years, Gluck demonstrates that revolutionary socialism was not the inevitable outcome of Lukács' early cultural radicalism, but only one of several possible options in the fragmented ideological climate of postwar Europe. From this new perspective, his pre-Marxist career takes on a cultural consistency that parallels and illuminates the inner strivings of the early modernists before the outbreak of World War I.

Lukács emerges in this generational portrait not only as dramatic and psychologically complex but also as a representative figure whose inner dilemmas were echoed in the lives of many other radical intellectuals who came of age during the fin de siêcle period. Gluck situates Lukács within a fascinating network of friends and associates, the so-called Sunday Circle, which included such people as Karl Mannheim, Arnold Hauser, Bela Balázs, and Anna Lesznai. Recipes even gluten-eaters love!.......2007-08-09

When I first stopped eating gluten, I gave up baking from scratch. I knew there were ways to make substitutions in recipes, but my few attempts came out very poorly. I've always been a good baker, so it was heart-breaking to turn out dry, crumbly, barely-edible versions of my previous specialties.

For a couple of years, I've been baking from mixes, which is fine, but doesn't give me the same satisfaction as baking from scratch. So, this summer, I decided to try again, and finally opened this cookbook with the intent of baking from it, and not only drooling over the gorgeous pages of full-color photos.

I've made the sour-cream coffeecake and the blueberry scones (a suggested variation on the raisin-cream scones), and served them to my parents and sister, all of whom can eat gluten and are gentle-but-candid when they don't think a recipe has come out well. They've loved them both!

And me? I can't wait to try the next one!

Very complete. Includes many recipes I haven't seen before and a lot of recipes I've been missing since going gluten-free.

This book is full of information, great pictures and recipes for some baked goods no one else has attempted.

However, I have found a couple recipes that are not good at all (the scone pizza crust was awful and did not work as she printed it (I do believe there may have been an omission of xanthan gum in the recipe).

The raspberry muffins are great, but I modified the recipe substantially to add extra nutrition and did not use sweetened coconut. Same goes for the apple muffins- yum.

I have made many of the recipes including the creme puffs/eclairs which turned out fabulous. My whole family ate all of them in one sitting... some of us hadn't had a creme puff in years. The blueberry scones are also quite tasty ( I cut out some of the sugar) and look and taste much like a "real" scone. The pudding is delicious (again I cut out some of the sugar and used vanilla bean instead of the extract). Her pie crust turns out well too. It is a pity there are no bread recipes. It would be nice to see what she would come up with.

This is a wonderful addition to your library, even though it has a couple kinks in it. Definitely recommended.

Absolutely a God-send.......2006-02-09

I love this book. It gave me such hope when I was first diagnosed four years ago. I held it to my heart and rejoiced. Up to that point I thought I was doomed to a pretty boring culinary life. This book really helped me to learn how to make wonderful gluten free desserts for my family. I am celiac, and I also have a celiac son and daughter who LOVE anything I make from this book - as do any non-celaic family and friends.

Some people remark that the items taste "too sweet" - really they are made to resemble traditional recipes when you need them They don't shriek "health food"! I love health food - but where does a celiac go when you sometimes want something absolutely delicious - for a treat or a special event? This book opens up the possibilities. Rebecca still looks healthy and trim - and she is a mother of two kids - so she must have found a balance somewhere. Sometimes when things are DELICIOUS you don't need or want to overeat them. Also most of her recipes use brown rice flour in her blends - so that is pretty healthy. In other words - in traditonal recipes you could never get this good flavor if you used whole wheat flour - but she gets a refined taste while using a healthy dose of brown rice flour.

I learned the deeper secrets of good gluten free bakig from this book. I now experiment - but i also use her recipes 'straight up'. I also sometimes use stevia whne I want to cut back on sugar in recipes. The trick is to only replace some of the sweetener with stevia - even up to 75%. Then use "normal" sweetener for the rest, and you won't get the bitter after taste of stevia.

Finally - it gave me heart that her introduction was not some long lament on "what celiac can do to you" but rather it was a lovely chapter on her love of cooking and its place in a joyful home.

This is a fun book.

I read it while living in Puerto Rico so I could run out and get the all ingredients and mix up any drinks immediately. My friends and I came to love this book. We used it extensively (especially on Friday nights). I also enjoyed the snippets of fiction and art work woven through the book that tie it all the drink recipes together. It's difficult to make a bar book entertaining to read but the author succeeds 100%.

Jumping Jack the Grasshopper is an adorable book about a grasshopper named Jack who is looking for a friend. In the end, Jack leanrns that he doesn't have to be just like someone in order to be their friend...some friends wiggle, fly, and swim. My active 2 year old little boy will actually sit down to read this book as he hops the toy grasshopper "Jack" that comes with the book from page to page on his adventure, and he learns a valuable lesson.

Not Thrilled........2007-06-11

As a former fat child, I already know the devastating effect being overweight can have on one's psyche. Reading this book just reminded me of my miserable childhood and of the horrors my daughter must be experiencing. In fact, I haven't been able to finish the book because it's so upsetting. Maybe there's some comfort and positive advice in later chapters--I hope so.

Have you ever noticed that "skinny" people say you just need to quit eating fattening foods and exercise more! Well, there is more to it than that. This book goes into the emotional side of why some kids eat too much & what they endure because of it.

My daughter and I both struggle with weight. We've tried limiting what she eats & getting her to exercise more. However, the more we pressed it, the more she saw it as a punishment & an attack on her self esteem. I just wasn't sure how to help her emotionally.

There's such a fine line between saying, "You're unacceptable as you are - you need to change" and "You're a wonderful person no matter your weight". This book goes into how to find that happy medium.

This is the first book that I've felt strongly about reviewing. I have no problems giving it the full 5 stars. I thought it would be one to read & pass along to my friends. However, I'm keeping mine to reference again & buying another to pass along.

Do we want them to want to be thin?.......2005-08-24

This is an excellent book, and one that should be read by anyone who deals with overweight children, as teacher, parent, physician or psychologist. It is well written, with many instructive and poignant vignettes.
Having said that, there are some negatives. The central dilemma in helping the overweight child is a conflict between making the child feel better and making the child thinner. The track record of treatments to make them thinner is poor. Sometimes they work but they involve convincing the child of how desirable it is to be thin. The more convinced the child becomes of the desirability of thinness the worse it feels. Rimm touches on this problem in her earlier chapters, especially in describing her argument with her son the epidemiologist, but does not resolve the issue.
Cigarettes, marihuana and alcohol are barely mentioned. This may be because of her of her focus in the earlier chapters on her own important and groundbreaking work, which was with middle schoolers.
I did not think the chapters on treatment were truly evidence-based although she has many good and useful ideas. She relies on secondary sources and on intuition and anecdotal evidence. It is presumably outside her stated purpose to offer specific dietary recommendations, but she does, in fact, make some suggestions. She might as well have gone the whole hog (sorry) and provided diet sheets rather than scientifically dubious and half-hearted tips about eating three meals a day and "healthy snacks."
The use of diet pills is not mentioned. These seem to be taboo for writers on pediatric weight problems, even though the same medications are widely prescribed to make naughty children behave better (with growth stunting regarded as an unwanted side effect).
