Noel Annan was a young cadet in the British Intelligence Division known as M.I.14 responsible for monitoring German messages during World War II. His work put him in close proximity to leading figures in the British military as well as such secret resources as the British decoder called "Ultra." From this prime perch Annan witnessed the operations of England's war effort. After Germany's surrender, he was assigned to an administrative position in conquered Germany. He records the varied notions of reeducation that Allied officers designed for the defeated enemy, everything from philosophical debate to alter the German's conception of a good life to the organized dilution of German blood through orchestrated intermarriage. Working from his personal recollections, supplemented with thorough historical research, Lord Annan writes in the impassioned voice of an eyewitness to these historic events, and his memoir beats with the lively pulse inspired by the effort to defeat the Nazis.
Book Description
"Changing Enemies is one of the last accounts we shall have by a witness to some of the high-level decision making during the war and its immediate aftermath. . . . Lord Annan's book valuably points to the contribution to German democracy that was distinctively British."--Michael R. Beschloss, New York Times Book Review
"In this crackling tale, former British intelligence officer Annan offers an insider's view of the military espionage that helped the Allies win the war against Hitler. . . . He vividly describes power struggles among the Allied forces occupying Germany, his work in guiding post-Nazi Germany toward multi-party democracy, [and] his friendship with Konrad Adenauer."--Publishers Weekly
"A graceful and crystal style like Noel Annan's, all but absent from most contemporary political and historical literature, is enough to awaken an American reader's slumbering literary Anglophilia."--David Mehegan, Boston Globe
"One of the best books ever written about military intelligence during World War II." --William Roger Louis, University of Texas, and Fellow of St. Antony's College, Oxford

Book Description
1904. Alexander Bain, Scottish philosopher and educationalist, was an early proponent of scientific psychology. Along with his friend, John Stuart Mill, Bain was a major proponent of the British school of empiricism: a theory which based all knowledge on basic sensory experiences and not on introspection. Bain's philosophical and scientific writings were completed during his twenty years as a professor at Aberdeen. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Book Description
Patterned on the outstanding success of I Love a Cop, this is the first book of its kind written exclusively for fire fighters and their families. Challenging two-dimensional stereotypes, Dr. Ellen Kirschman portrays fire fighters as they really are: complex men and women doing one of the world's toughest jobs and trying to fit comfortably into two families-the one at the firehouse and the one at home. I Love a Fire Fighter takes us on a journey from stationhouse to four-alarm blaze, from a harrowing ride with paramedics to a family dealing with shift work. Along the way, Dr. Kirschman addresses occupational health and safety issues along with domestic concerns including unpredictable schedules, lack of communication, and anxiety. Vivid anecdotes and practical tips show families how they can pull together when job stress threatens to spill over onto home turf, and shed light on what spouses and partners can do to help themselves, their mates, and their children live with the "best job in the world."
Customer Reviews:
Some good points..........2007-06-05
First, I'll counter J. Brown's review above - the book does not exclusively apply to male firefighters, but given that the vast majority of firefighters in the world are men, it does focus primarily on that.
Now, moving on to the book. I am a (volunteer) firefighter, grew up in a fire family, and work as a 911 dispatcher. I'm pretty familiar with this side of the fence. I bought this book for my significant other, who occasionally has some issues with my running out at all hours. I decided to read the book before I gave it to her, because I wanted to be sure it was worth reading and a fair description of things. Kirschman obviously spent a lot of time on her research and has a pretty good grasp of things - not perfect, but far better than most.
The book makes a lot of good points. It goes into detail about a lot of our daily grind, the things we face, and the ups and downs of the fire service. She obviously tried to understand what we do. No, she didn't do a perfect job, but I don't expect that from someone who is doing research and doesn't feel the call.
She makes quite a few good suggestions - learn to listen, learn to read moods, and decide how much you *really* want to know about what we do in our days. The social network (support network, she calls it) is a major aspect of the fire service, and while she suggests working to grow it, she doesn't make a lot of suggestions how.
My biggest gripe? It seems like Kirschman has a bit of an ax to grind about women in the fire service. I'll make it clear, lest someone call me sexist. My mother was a firefighter. One of my best friends is a female firefighter. I really don't give a rat's hind end what gender you are or what plumbing you have - I need to know that when bad things start happening I can trust you (male or female) to do a job to protect all of us.
So. If you're a firefighter, get this book for your loved ones. If you're a firefighter's loved one, you owe it to your relationship to get this book. Emergency services are hard on relationships. This is a good start.
Great Book Every Fire Fighter and Family Should Own!.......2007-05-19
My husband was a volunteer fire fighter when we met. I had a hard time dealing with constant fire and EMS alarms and the fact that he would put himself in a potentially dangerous situation. Some of the guys on his department recommended this book to him for me so I bought it. I absolutly loved it. I even joined my hometown volunteer department after I had read it to get a better understanding of what he does. I fell in love with fire fighting just as he did. We've been together a couple years now and were married a few months ago. We both belong to my department now and he has just been elected training officer. If it weren't for this book I may have given up on something really great in my life. It touches on all parts of fire fighting no matter if you are a female or male fire fighter. This book is a must have for all fire fighters and their families.
Book was written about FireMEN not FireFIGHTERS............2005-12-08
I heard about this book and was going to buy it, but from what I read it seems to refer to the Firefighters as male. Being a FEMALE Firefighter, I was going to buy it for my loved ones to read, but felt that it really did not apply to me. What a huge disappointment. Just when I thought there was a book to help people understand what it is like to live with a Firefighter, I find out that it only applies to the loved ones of the Male Firefighters. Sorry, this isn't supposed to be a Women's rights kind of blog, but we are into another whole millenium...is it still not known that there ARE female firefighters out there???
A necessity for friends & family of FireFighters.......2005-11-09
Even though I completed this book I will keep it on my nightstand regardless. After reading "I Love a Fire Fighter", I feel so much better about how to relate to my Fire Fighter husband. I really feel prepared to handle his highs and lows as well as the dangers he faces every day. This book is such an invaluable tool, and I really loved the individual stories by real-life fire fighters and their families. My husband also read the book and found it highly enjoyable and realistic.
Book Description
El Charro Café is famous throughout the United States and the world for its vibrant, fresh Mexican food and fiesta-like atmosphere.
In this beautifully illustrated color hardcover cookbook, owner and chef Carlotta Flores shares her recipes, her family history and her love of this flavorful cuisine.
Carlotta includes prized family recipes as well as those that make El Charro a Tucson delight and tradition. She tells stories of the four generations of her family who have worked at El Charro since its beginnings in 1922, making it the oldest family-run restaurant in the Southwest.
A glossary of Spanish terms and foods helps you learn your way around a Mexican menu. You'll learn the secrets to making authentic, traditional Sonoran Mexican dishes and also ways to make light, healthy and equally delicious newer ones.
You'll absorb tortilla etiquette along with the recipes for El Charro's savory sauces and soups.
Photographs of the patio and restaurant are interspersed with "notitas" (little notes and tips) and Carlotta's stories. The heart of the book: Wonderful recipes, including all the classic dishes you expect from a Mexican restaurant as well as ones that may be new to you such as Puerco con Mangos (pork with mango sauce), Tacos de Camaron (shrimp tacos), Almendrado (almond meringue pudding), and Capirotada (Lenten bread pudding).
Vegetable dishes such as Rajitas de Nopalitas y Cebollitas (sautéed prickly pear with onions and green chile), Enchiladas de Hongos (mushroom enchiladas), Papas Molidas de Navidad (mashed potatoes with green chile and salsa) will open your eyes and tastebuds.
A book so representative of Tucson that is was chosen for the City of Tucson's Millennium Time Capsule.
You will enjoy your visit to El Charro Café, sampling Tucson's heritage as well as its cuisine ... Bienvenidos!

A family, its traditions and its famous cafe in a cookbook.......1998-11-03
Many of us collect cookbooks for their unique and/or useful recipes. Rarely does a recipe-book come along that is one you want to curl up with on the couch and read and enjoy for its own sake.
Carlotta Flores' El Charro Cafe is one. It is a joyful tribute to past and future by the author and is full of the color of Mexican flavor in the Southwest U.S. Fisher Books did an outstanding job on the full-color photography on nearly every page, not only of platters of food but of kichey artifacts and symbols of the rich culture as it is lived on both sides of our long border and especially at El Charro.
Throughout the pages are amusing and touching family anecdotes from the time Carlotta's great-aunt Monica began serving cowboys and their familias frijoles and tamales in the dusty, wild Tucson of 1922,to the third and fourth generation's tasteful updates that have made El Charro an international destination-restaurant.
I can think of dozens of friends and relatives who would love to find this prize under the Christmas tree. It would not need wrapping!
Excellent regional cookbook........1998-10-30
I first encountered this cookbook at my in-laws' house in Florida. They had dined at El Charro on a recent trip to Tucson, and were so enamored with the restaurant and the food, they bought the book. Unfortunately for them, they can't get many of the authentic spices and foodstuffs in Florida. Fortunately for me in Colorado, I can (excepting the preparation of the carne seca, which is one of the few drawbacks of this book). Gracias, El Charro e Senora Flores.
MY FAMILY LOVED EVERY RECIPE!!!.......1998-10-20
BEING FROM THE WEST COAST, I THOUGHT I KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT MEXICAN FOOD, AND BEING FROM TUCSON AND KNOWING THE EL CHARRO QUALITY MADE ME THINK I KNEW IT ALL. I WAS WRONG!!! THIS BOOK IS GREAT, IT TELLS A GREAT STORY OF THE TRADITION AND HISTORY OF THE CULTURE BEHIND THE FOOD. THE RECIPES WERE CLEAR AND CONCISE AND FUN TO MAKE. MY FAMILY WAS AMAZED HOW GOOD A COOK THIS BOOK MADE ME. I WAS MORE INTRIGUED WITH MAKING FOOD FROM A BOOK THAT I FELT A CONNECTION TO THE CULTURE THAT MADE THE RECIPES POSSIBLE. I HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE RESTAURANTS FOR SOME TIME NOW AND I FEAR IT MAY BE LONGER AS I AM ENJOYING COOKING AT HOME SO MUCH! BUY THIS BOOK!

Customer Reviews:
A nice introduction to Alaska's berry bounty!.......2006-09-12
The Alaska Wild Berry Guide and Cookbook is an excellent source for someone interested in making use of the many delicious wild berries that dot the Alaskan landscape. With almost 50 kinds of berries growing wild here on the Last Frontier, you're sure to be close to one or more that will work for jam, jelly or some delectable baked goods. The book's color photos are particularly helpful. My only real complaint with this book is that I'd almost prefer to have a smaller "pocket-sized" guide (sans recipes) for times when I'm out in the woods gathering berries. This would be particularly helpful for those hikes when you're bringing along a visitor or someone knew to Alaska. I'm looking for a specific kind of berry, but they often want to know the names of several varieties and it always seems to be the very ones that have long-since gone from my mind! Despite this small complaint, I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone wishing for more information on berries in the Greatland!

Book Description
Veteran berry-book author Bob Krumm has teamed up with his son to share more tips and quips on how to harvest and enjoy the berries in northern California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Idaho and northern Nevada. Here, in one well-organized book, is the information of a field guide (identifies 20 wild berries and fruits) and the fun of a cookbook (100 recipes for jams, jellies, pies, breads, and much more). Non-technical descriptions, habitat hints, and color photos of berry and blossom make identification easy.

Probably the best usage book for Northwest berries.......2007-01-09
Title: The Pacific Northwest Berry Book
Author: Bob Krumm, James Krumm
The Content: This book is part identification guide and part usage guide for common wild berries of the Pacific Northwest. The following berries are covered: Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus discolor), Evergreen Blackberry (Rubus laciniatus), Trailing Blackberry (Rubus ursinus), Blackcap (Rubus leucodermis), Oval-leafed Blueberry (Vaccinium ovalifolium), Black Huckleberry (Vaccinium membranaceum), Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium), Evergreen Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum), Bog Blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), Dwarf Bilberry (Vaccinium caespitosum), Alaska Blueberry (Vaccinium alaskaense), Choke Cherry (Prunus virginiana), Bitter Cherry (Prunus emarginata), Pacific Crab Apple (Malus fusca), Red-flowered Currant (Ribes sanguineum), Golden Currant (Ribes aureum), Blue Elderberry (Sambucus caerulea), Coastal Gooseberry (Ribes divaricatum), Whitestem Gooseberry (Ribes inerme), Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum edule), Oregon Grape (Mahonia repens, Mahonia nervosa, and Mahonia aquifolium), Raspberry (Rubus idaeus), Rose (Rosa spp.), Salal (Gaultheria shallon), Salmonberry (Rubus spectablilis), Pacific Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca), and Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus).
Each genus is given an introduction, indentification tips, and several recipes for the berries. There are no illustrations. There is a 14 page color plate section that provides a photo for each genus covered in the book.
Short sections at the end of the book cover possible uses for each berry, versatile recipes, a blooming and ripening calendar, and a glossary.
The Writing: The writing is competent. Personal collection notes are intermixed with information about each plant.
Details on the Volume Reviewed: Published by Falcon Publishing. 1998, first edition. Paperback. 135 pages in a medium font.
Opinions: This book is hard to find and expensive, but it is probably the best available source for uses of Northwest berries. It is not particularly useful as an identification guide, but if you know one berry from another, it provides recipes for jams, jellies, deserts, and other preserves that I have not found anywhere else.

Customer Reviews:
worked for me.......2006-07-29
I admit, I did not take all the supplements and did not fully do the hot and cold showers part, but i did stick with the diet and the fasting. The fasting was hard especially the first day but it actually was a great experience, it is almost like a meditation, you are so concerned with hunger that you actually forget everyhting else in life. My skin improved significantly, acne cleared, and the bagginess under my eyese dissapeared. I did loose around 3 lbs in week, which was definitely a big plus. I had more energy but did not start until the middle of the program. I recommend this program and if you cant follow it all the way, at least stick with the diet and the fasting, since that is all I did and i still had great results.
Expensive and not worth the effort.......2000-11-30
If you go on this week long starve your supplements alone are going to run you $100. Then you have to take 5 handfuls of pills every day. I think the author must have stock in the "Twin Lab" corporation because they are the only ones who carry some of the weirder things you have to take. Also, you have to go without food for 48 hours. Doesn't sound hard but if you have a family it is almost impossible. You also have to take cold/boiling showers and do something called "dry skin brushing". I tried it with an open mind and it did nothing for me. The friend who recommended the book tried it with the thought it was going to solve all her problems, and it helped a great deal. So why not skip the complicated starvation and stuff and just believe that you are going to be helped by something simple?
Disease wake-up call!.......2000-08-22
As a naturopathic student I found the book riveting. Not only do the authors open one's eyes to a whole new way of looking at disease, but they also make one aware of how toxic our lives truly are. The book is very well written with a lot of scientific and medical information that also allows the reader to understand the way in which our bodies work. I would not say it is a cure-all for everyone, even the authors don't lay claim to that title, but I would recommend this book to anyone who lives in an urban environment and feels the strains of everyday life weighing heavily on their health. This book can just save you from that permanent "hung over" feeling every morning.
It's not easy - but it works!.......2000-08-15
The book was recommended to me by my yoga teacher and I have to say I had my reservations. I read the book once and then delved back into it as the science of it began to sink in and make sense to me. I was unsure about a two day fast, fearing I would faint away after the first missed meal. Not so! I didn't feel a single pang of hunger throughout. Having completed my week of de-tox successfully I feel great. I'm sleeping deeply and feel refreshed and rejuvenated upon waking in the morning. An added bonus of this whole de-tox week is that I've lost an inch around my hips and my waist! I would recommend this book to anyone seeking better all-round health and an understanding of how the digestive system works.
7 Day Detox Miracle.......2000-03-20
In the summer of 1999 I was feeling very sluggish. I could tell that my body was not functioning properly. I have always been "health conscience" and done my best to eat well and take proper supplements. When I would get massages the muscles and the attachements felt like they were on fire. Plus I had a continous ache in my elbow from being a massage therpist and using my arms repeatively over the years. I went to the store looking for something to help me become educated on these symptoms. By chance I picked up this book and immediately saw some encouraging words. I was willing to make the "sacrifice" for seven days. Within two days my elbow eased up in pain. After finishing the program I could tell a tremendous differance. My muscles feel much better, I have more energy and don't have as many urges for poor choices in foods to eat. I did the program again after Christmas and again noticed an improvement. I look forward to doing this program again. Thanks for all your efforts in bringing forth a quality book.

A definitive study of the provocative art criticism.......2003-04-14
Art And Its Discontents: The Early Life Of Adrian Stokes by Richard Read (Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of Western Australia) is a definitive study of the provocative art criticism, poetry, and other writings of Adrian Stokes' (1902-72). Stokes was one of the first (if not the first) critical writers in Britain to connect psychoanalytic theory to art, -- a talent that might itself relate to his entry into psychoanalysis in 1929 in order to cope with his own dilemmas of sexual identity and self-consciousness. Art And Its Discontents is a masterful written, exceedingly thoughtful, and highly commended study of a singularly articulate individual.

Book Description
The medieval popes conducted a vigorous correspondence with monarchs, clergy, and lay people all over western Europe. Streams of applicants made their way to the papal court for confirmations of rights, concessions, and on some occasions to get justice. The papal Chancery was the executive office, constantly on the move with the pope and the cardinals who formed the curia. Officials connected with the issue of the letters - scribes, correctors, taxators, bullators, registrars - followed the papal court. Only a small proportion of the original letters sent and received have survived. They are, therefore, very precious, not only for what they tell us about the course of events, but also for the light they throw on how papal government and administration worked. In this volume over a thousand surviving letters have been brought together, analysed, and discussed for the first time. They provide important insights not only into the activities of the papal court but also into the aspirations and desires of the petitioners.
