In April 1945, Corporal Hans Schuetz was an instructor in the Nazi army, training the last German recruits-men in their 40s and 50s who had previously worked in war production, but who had been called into service now to protect the Fatherland however they could. Soon Russian tanks advanced on their position, and Schuetz was captured by Soviet soldiers and shipped to Russia. Along the way, he was nearly executed for carving a hole in the railroad car to allow the men to see out. For the next three years, he lived in Russian camps, working in the camp hospital and in a freight wagon factory. Working alongside Russians the author gained a deep compassion for the people and love for their homeland even under the arduous conditions he faced.

Over fifty years after her death, Simone Weil (1909-1943) remains one of the most searching religious inquirers and political thinkers of the twentieth century. Albert Camus said she had a "madness for truth." She rejected her Jewishness and developed a strong interest in Catholicism, although she never joined the Catholic church. Both an activist and a scholar, she constantly spoke out against injustice and aligned herself with workers, with the colonial poor in France, and with the opressed everywhere. She came to believe that suffering itself could be a way to unity with God, and her death at thirty-four has been recorded as suicide by starvation.

This extraordinary study is primarily a topography of Weil's mind, but Thomas Nevin is persuaded that her thought is inextricably bound to her life and dramatic times. Thus, he not only addresses her thoughts and her prejudices but examines her reasons for entertaining them and gives them a historical focus. He claims that to Weil's generation the Spanish War, the Popular Front, the ascendance of Hitlerism, and the Vichy years were not mere backdrops but definitive events.

Nevin explores in detail not only matters of continuing interest, such as Weil's leftist politics and her attempt to embrace Christianity, but also hitherto unexamined aspects of her life and work which permit a deeper understanding of her: her writings on science, her work as a poet and dramatist, and her selective friendships. The thread uniting these topics is her struggle to maintain her independence as a free thinker while resisting community such as Judaism could have offered her. Her intellectual struggles eloquently reveal the desperate isolation of Jews torn between the lure of assimilation and the tormented dignity of their communal history.

Nevin's massive research draws on the full range of essays, notebooks, and fragments from the Simone Weil archives in Paris, many of which have never been translated or published.

I suffer from cronic migraines. I have been seeing my doctor, but havn't been getting the answeres I've needed. This book helped me understand what was going on, what to look for, and even gave me ideas on what to do differently. It also gave me ideas of what i'm going to mention during my next visit to my doctor. My mother also suffers from migraines, and I have a few friends and do also. I have had no problem inviting them to read my book.

Essential for migraine sufferers................2001-09-25

....Seymour Diamond, MD has written a comprehensive book on migraines that is designed for the layman. He explains the physiology of migraines and how they differ from ordinary headaches. He describes common symptoms that help the reader identify if and which type of migraine he/she gets, or if the migraines are co-existing with other types of headaches (which, once diagnosed, impacts treatment). Dr. Diamond delves into the specific problems that may occur in women (PMS, menopause) and how they may correlate with migraine, the link between migraine and other diseases (such as lupus, epliepsy, etc.) and how to tell the danger signs that indicate that a headache requires immediate medical attention.

The second half of the book is devoted to treatment. Dr.Diamond covers common drugs that are prescribed to treat migraine as well as dietary changes that migraine sufferers may wish to make. He also has a section on alternative treatments from chiropractic to biofeedback to herbal remedies.

The book also includes case studies and ends with a presentation of several support networks for migraine sufferers. Overall very informative book and a must for anyone wishing to begin or change the treatment they are receiving for migraines.

Most healthy cookbooks have recipes that are just too fussy for everyday cooking. This book has recipes that are not only easy to make, but are also delicious. Even my husband, who is usually very suspicious of anything labeled "healthy", loves the recipes from this book. I use this cookbook more than any other on my shelf.

Different methods.......2007-02-13

There's a beautiful quilt, "Geese in the Garden" where you sew strips onto a triangle muslin base and then add squares later on to make stars. I've never seen this technique before and it really makes sense to me now. There are 15 projects in all. I was impressed with how these patterns differ from most other scrap quilt books I've seen. And "Geese in the Garden" is one of the most beautiful patterns I've run across in a very long time.

I love this book and browse through it often. The quilts are beautiful and inspiring. I haven't made any of the quilts yet, but plan to make a couple from it including the one pictured on the back. This one features a pineapple looking pattern with light and dark stars.

The book is good for newbies and experienced quilters.

As a quilter I do have a lots of bits and pieces of different kinds of fabric. It is a wonderful idea to put them all together in a totally funny quilts. You can really use even the smallest bit from your "left over" box. I do enjoy the book and wish you to have same good time with it.

This is a wonderful book for putting scraps to good use. There are good tips for sorting, storing and organizing them plus helpful information on which ones are compatible in a quilt. I was drawn to the cover picture of the Crossed Tracks quilt and that will be my first one to sew from this book. All patterns are template free and rotary cut however be aware that about half of the patterns are cut at 45 or 60 degree angles and will be more of a challenge.

This book offers a simple way to start eating healthy. I've been interested in gourmet food and cooking for years and then became a student of Ayurveda. Though the concepts of Ayurvedic eating are introduced in the beginning, and the recipes follow ayurvedic guidelines, the book isn't complicated with hard to understand terms. Best of all, the preparations are wonderful for a taste-discriminating Western palate.

This cookbook is filled with healthy and delicious recipes. It is well-written, with easy to follow directions and ingredients that are readily available. I really like the 30-day meal plan that is included; it takes all the guess work out of menu planning. While I was not a vegetarian before I began using this cookbook, I am now! The food is so delicious and high enough in protein that I don't miss meat at all--although for you die-hard carnivores, there are many recipes that have meat-optional directions. This book has everything from breakfast foods through desserts and these recipes have gained approval from my toughest critics: my 10- and 14-year-old sons. Although not diet food, my husband and I have both lost weight since we began following the 30-day plan. The food is so nutritious and satisfying, that our junk food cravings have been greatly reduced. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for healthy and delicious recipes. Enjoy!

After attending one of Chopra's seminars, I decided to try out the Chopra Cook Book. Although you might find some of the combinations different from usual, the taste is wonderful and you will, for sure, feel the diffence in your body. May take some time to ajust, if you decide to stick to it, like me, but even for a side serving they are great. Not exactly all diet food, (check out the calories) they are delicious. These recepies have finaly got me on the Vegetarian path! And I feel great !!!

I buy cookbooks to read and if compelling, I will make a recipe or two from it. This one is so compelling that I've made four recipes in the first week of owning it. The introductory chapters on health and eating are informational. The recipes are curious enough that I tried one. It was delicious and now I can't stop. The ingredients are easy to find as well.

For much of the late colonial history of the Philippines, sugar was its most lucrative export, the biggest employer, and the greatest source of political influence. The so-called "Sugar Barons"--wealthy hacendero planters located mainly in Central Luzon and on the Visayan island of Negros--gained the reputation as kingmakers and became noted for their lavish lifestyles and the quasi-feudal nature of their estates. But Philippine sugar gradually declined into obsolescence; today it is regarded as a "sunset industry" that can barely satisfy domestic demand. While planters continue to think of themselves as wielding considerable power and influence, they are more often seen as vestiges of a bygone era.

Michael Billig examines sugar's decline within both the dynamic context of contemporary Philippine society and the global context of the international sugar market. His multi-sited ethnographic analysis focuses mainly on conflicts among the various elite sectors (planters, millers, traders, commercial buyers, politicians) and concludes that the most salient political, economic, and cultural trend in the Philippines today is the decline of rural, agrarian elite power and the rise of urban industrial, commercial, and financial power. His reflections on his relationships with informants in the midst of the politically charged atmosphere that surrounds the sugar industry provide a candid look at the role of the observer who, try as he might to remain impartial, finds himself swept into the vortex of policy debates and power plays. I can't believe Neal has written such worthless tripe. I have spoken to him and he has represented that he was and is an experienced, successful, big time trader. He talks like a know-it-all and writes like one as well. At least he is consistent. What a poser. I am a part timer in the investment business but my knowledge far exceeds this impostor's. Try as he may, he must be having difficulty trading because he has knack for selling his empty ideas. The one or two threads of modest value were copied from the work of others and I even think he borrowed a few of mine but mine were certainly better and valuable. My bestr recommendation is stay away from anything this guy is hawking.

I can't believe that any one could publish such an empty collection of gibberish. What a waist of time and money. All this book contains is the collection of expressions found on Wall Street without explanation and meaning. Instead read Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, The Market Wizards, The Crowd you will get more inside, then this book will ever produce.

I can't believe any publisher would allow this hodgepodge of gibberish to pass the scrutiny of a professional editor. I program trading systems for a living and attempt to find ideas in books i read. I have a thirst for knowledge and I consider my time to be valuable and not to wasted on worthless banter and self promotion. I violated both in this instance. I have learned a good lesson. I am embarrassed for fear others who research my ideas to learn I actually conducted a seminar in Chicago and had the stupidity to invite this author to speak. it was empty words in his speech just like this book. I returned and got my money back. mark b.

bunch of tips.......2003-06-20

This book is written in short hodgepodge chapters like Eng and Longstreet. Weintraub presents a myriad of trading ideas, thoughts, tips and cliches to the reader. 90% of it is not going to be beneficial to any trader, but in the pile of dung.. there are some gold nuggets if you dig around long enough. The chapter at the end on spreads is very interesting and would be worth looking into.

Poor Presentation With Empty Writing.......2002-12-01

Not only does this book have nothing of value for a "real" trader, but it is also a spelling and grammar mess. I woulnd't be surprised if the writer never attended high school and never traded for himself in real life. He fails to grasp the intricacies of how the markets really operate. I believe it was an effort to establish himself as a credible factor in the investment business and if this is the best it is falls far short of what a part time trader could write with little effort. Stay away from this book and get a Larry Williams book instead!! At least you will learn something of value.

There was more basic information about real estate in general, than in second homes in particular. As most people considering a second home have already been through the buying,selling, or building a few times they know most of this stuff through experience. But I understand Tiger Woods works on the fundamentals routinely, so an evening going over the basics didn't hurt.

This little book covers a lot of the basics, but I was hoping to actually see more examples of second homes. Not a pretty book but, as I said, it gives basic information. Just wasn't what I was looking for. I know a lot of home buying and shopping basics, and a lot of it is common sense. I wanted something a little more inspiring.

This is a good book particularly for first time buyers. About half the information is devoted to general real estate matters, and half specifically to second homes in particular. More specific information about specific problems and advantages in certain areas would help (what to look for in beachfront property, mountain property, etc.). Competent but not the only resource you'll want to read.
