The gut-wrenching personal account of a year in Vietnam.......2003-04-12
Dear Donna It's only 45 Hours from Bien Hoa by Douglas Neralich is the gut-wrenching personal account of his year in Vietnam. An elementary school teacher turned Army medic, Douglas was only twenty-two when called to serve his country as part of the 36th Engineer Battalion, stations at Vinh Long, in Vietnam in 1970. The vignettes presented are both gripping and horrifying, sometimes gentle, sometimes cruel, and taken altogether form an unforgettable picture of the war in this engaging memoir. Enhanced with occasional pencil sketches, Dear Donna It's only 45 Hours from Bien Hoa is a welcome and recommended contribution to Vietnam Military History collections and reading lists.

Book Description
A proven approach to beating disease and enjoying peak health written by one of the country's most dynamic health educators.
It's a fact seldom admitted by the medical establishment: chemotherapy and radiation are only about 6% effective in fighting cancer. Prompted by public outcry, research now validates a course of cancer prevention and treatment advocated by specialists in alternative medicine and practiced for centuries in Eastern cultures--nutritional therapy.
Verne Varona shows how to stop cancer in its tracks--and even reverse it--through diet. Backed by the testimony of prominent physicians and inspiring case histories, Varona explains what kind of nourishment works best to enhance immunity and restore vitality--without sacrificing enjoyment of food. Starting with the basics of smart eating and moving to specifics on the role of antioxidants, phytochemicals, herbs, vitamins, and more in preventing and conquering cancer, he outlines a complete, easy-to-follow program for freedom from a devastating disease--and improved odds of a long, healthy life.
Aimed to make dietary changes as painless as possible, this welcome resource also features a tantalizing collection of nutritious recipes, helpful shopping and cooking tips, and sensitive advice on eating in restaurants and at social gatherings.

Great Reference Book.......2006-11-05
I purchased this book after a friend passed away from caner (within days of finding out, he was gone). In speaking with some others and doing some internet research, I kept hearing about this book. It seems that our society is really working against us, as most things have caner causing properties in the contents. This book is an eye opener and I suggest it for those that would like to make some better food decisions and desire to have a greater awareness of what they can do for prevention.
Insightful, Inspiring & Entertaining!.......2004-01-14
I bought this book for a friend with cancer and after reading the preface and first chapter just couldn't put it down! Verne Varona writes with an amazing clarity, insight and entertaining style while demystifing all kinds of nutritional myths. His information about acid and alkaline is the best I've read anywhere and his sugar craving information has allowed me to challenge what was a formidable addiction. It seems like he's taken the best of numerous cultural medicines and combined them into a practical and refreshing melting pot approach. Best of all, after five weeks on this program I feel better than I have in 30 years! I have as much kitchen savvy as kangeroo, but his recipes are easy-to-follow and absolutely delicious. Whether you have cancer, concerned about cancer or just in search of good health, this highly motivating book is a must read for anyone wanting to improve or recover their health. That's my take!

Well Researched and thought out.......2001-08-28
Loaded with the latest Research and many years of practical experience, made this book such a beleivable read, a book I can reference and read over and over again, I specifically used a pink highlighter to zoom in on all the important points, which runs rampant without the whole book. If you are a person who wants valid, clear information on how to take care of yourself for the rest of your life whether you have cancer or not, this is the book for you, I healed my cancer fifteen years ago using these principles and there never outdated, like so many diet trends out there!! this is a keeper. Thank you for your hard work, in putting the book together. L.K.
Book Description
A chilled, crystal glass; the purest gin; a touch of dry vermouth--vigorously shaken, not stirred--and a plump, green olive. The martini was and still is more than just a cocktail. Originally mixed in the nineteenth century, it became an American icon in the twentieth, and the favorite drink of such luminaries as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Jack London, and Ernest Hemingway. Bernard De Voto called the martini "the supreme American gift to world culture," while H. L. Mencken declared it "the only American invention as perfect as a sonnet."
The first book of its kind to explore the drink's wide appeal, this volume serves up a fabulous cocktail of martini-inspired art, cartoons, collectibles, advertisements, and film stills that reveal how deeply this classic has permeated every aspect of American culture, from literature and film to politics and high society. Complete with bartending lore, traditional martini recipes, literary excerpts, memorable scenes from James Bond movies, and more, The Martini offers a toast to this intoxicating symbol of the American dream.
Customer Reviews:
Pleasant enough.......2006-01-30
A coffee table book, defined as one where the picture to text ratio is 1:1 or greater. That doesn't diminish the collection of text and images that Barnaby Conrad has put together in this slim volume, but as an exhaustive work on the mixture of gin and vermouth garnished with an olive this is not. Conrad does manage to bring together some things that I hadn't seen or read before in my cocktail explorations, including a very dry (heh heh) bit of humor from Christopher Buckley on a presidential debate between George "Pappy" Bush and Bill Clinton called "The Three Martini Debate," derived from a Tom Brokaw quote in The New York Times that serving the two a martini and having an exchange at his house would be a good alternative format. None of the pictures made my list of favorites, although the old advertisements and movie stills were interesting, and the cartoons, mainly from The New Yorker, were fun. Only two poems, one of which I was already intimately familiar with (the Dorothy Parker), but the other was one which I will endeavor to memorize, Ogden Nash's "A Drink with Something In It."
The single thing that I learned about the cocktail itself from the book was that the original recipe called for orange bitters in a 2:1 gin and vermouth combination. Since I actually have a bottle or orange bitters after having searched for a year for one, I can give this a try.
WELL DONE!.......2003-02-06
This book is great--it has history, humor, and lots of glamorous pictures, and manages to keep the cheese factor very low. A great gift for the drinkers in your life!
Breezy, well-written look at a cultural phenomenon.......2001-11-17
Now HERE is a hip coffee-table book. It's true that it isn't as colorful (or fundamentally healthy in subject) as Drew Kampion's "Stoked: A History of Surf Culture" (ISBN 1575440628). Nor as vividly gothic as David King's "The Commissar Vanishes," containing photographs re-touched during the Stalin regime so that unpersons might become unremembered, while the old women with the thick glasses and awkward sheaves of the forbidden-book registry (updated monthly) made the rounds of the bookshops and libraries to preen the inventory (ISBN 0805052941). Nor again is it as deeply, internationally hip as Conrad's earlier "Absinthe: History in a Bottle" (1988, reprinted 1997, ISBN 0811816508). As a European-émigré acquaintance recalled, for example: "It was 1950, we had just been married, we were driving through this little town in Switzerland. It was a Sunday after church, and the place seemed deserted. But there was a large inn, where we stopped. Most of the town was there, having a glass of wine. There was also a little private room, and the local leaders were there, the mayor, the bishop, the chief of police, and the innkeeper, who had come out to see who we were. While the rest of the people were having a glass of wine, they were off to themselves, having an absinthe, a little furtively. All perfectly illegal, and totally charming. I made a witty remark about this, a little off-color. The bishop laughed heartily, and they welcomed us in and gave us each an absinthe and toasted our marriage." (See also my separate recommendation posted for the Conrad "Absinthe.")
These are all interesting coffee-table books, and they all deal with some kind of history. But none of the others starts with lines like "I must get out of these wet clothes and into a dry Martini." Conrad's Martini book is the most US-pop-culture-hip of this bunch. It is light-hearted and loaded with trivia, from old magazine advertisements to collectible cocktail shakers to an unforgettable movie photo on page 53 of Joan Crawford in high-contrast black-and-white, Martini in one hand, cigarette in the other. It is an instructive history as well as a very funny narrative.
By the late 1970s the Martini was dying out, as Conrad mentions; it was unhip, old-fashioned. By 1990 (Conrad doesn't mention but I do) a character in Eric Kraft's contemporary novel "Reservations Recommended" (ISBN 0517572338) was so out-of-it that he "ordered a martini without irony." You wouldn't have guessed it by the late 1990s when a suburban Crate-and-Barrel store was selling seemingly little else but Martini glasses and 1930s-reproduction cocktail shakers, and the Libbey Glass website offered numerous Martini models including with Z-stems. The Martini did not stay unhip for long.
The quintissential American cocktail, in all it's glory........2000-07-19
This beautiful "coffee table" style book is dedicated to that most beautiful and perfect of cocktails, the inestimable martini.
Conrad's informative text, colorful anecdotes, and lavish illustrations make this book a wonderful addition to the great miracle it celebrates.
Mix yourself a martini, (two olives, shaken -- not stirred) relax in an easy chair, and enjoy this book!
A stirring book--even though I prefer my martinis shaken........2000-05-07
In this PC-infested world, it is refreshing to find an author with not only the audacity but also the innate talent to immortalize one of the greatest contributions to humanity ever devised--the martini. Every serious savorer of that pure clear elixir should read this book, not only for the historical background of the martini, but to reassure himself that his is a noble cause--to prepare the perfect martini.

Depends on what you're looking for.......2007-05-12
What it is: 20 or 30 articles reprinted from Fine Woodworking magazine, between the 1970s and early 1980s. The articles cover a range of topics, only a few of which deal with drying lumber on the scale of a beginning-to-mid amateur.
A lot of the topics are of interest: spalted wood, a bit of the theory behind wood's material properties, essays on a few favored species, turning a trunk into lumber, and even logging with a horse. Don't laugh - I heard of one guy who makes a very good living using his horse to remove unwanted trees from ecologically sensitive areas.
What it's not: an organized discussion of any one topic. Maybe you'll find a few good grains in this collection, but a lot of chaff. The few articles that spoke to my needs were too short to give a discussion that I'd find worthwhile. For example, I won't be pouring a concrete slab for my drying barn any time soon. I do want to understand the relative merits of drying logs whole vs cut into planks, and I want some idea of how long to dry wood of various species and sizes under different conditions - topics that aren't addressed.
//wiredweird
A fun read.......2007-01-04
Like other Fine Woodworking books it's basically a collection of articles from their magazine. But they are very interesting articles. I enjoyed reading it and learned alot about how to cut and dry lumber myself. Plenty of info on air drying and solar kilns but I wished it revealed the mysteries of a large kiln. I would like to see a drying table with humidity control and more on stress relieving wood.
Excellent resource for sawing/drying/do-it-yourself kilning........1999-03-01
Book is a compilation of articles on growing timber, sawing methods using a variety of mill types as well as how to stack and air dry lumber. It also includes a detailed section on kiln construction for the hobbiest. Different types of kiln plans are included including solar, and dehumidification types. Overall, an inexpensive resource with a lot of usefull information for the serious wood hobbiest that harvests, saws and drys their own lumber.

Book Description
Whether decorating the grand halls for visiting dignitaries, transforming a room for a holiday, or simply gracing the private family quarters, flowers are an essential part of life in the White House. In Flowers, White House Style, former White House Chief Floral Decorator Dottie Temple reveals the secrets to these fabulous floral arrangements while offering a rare glimpse into the inner workings of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. With more than 125 original and archival photographs, many seen here for the first time, Temple and her coauthor, Stan Finegold, guide us through the floral displays created for five presidential administrations, offering history and insight from the most famous house in the world.
Supplementing this rich memoir, renowned historian William Seale offers intriguing vignettes and little-known facts about White House floral history during the mansion's first 150 years. For example, in the 1840s, it was believed that fresh flowers absorbed all the oxygen in the air and they were banished to the outdoors. The flowers for the wedding of President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter Alice were very restrained; only jasmine and white orchids were used.
Walk through the White House florist shop, where thousands of flowers are delivered every day, and witness the planning and coordinating of each arrangement for important official events. Floral selections must be carefully made so they offend neither visitors nor the President. White flowers are never used for Japanese guests, because they are reserved for funerals in Japan. The favorite flowers of dignitaries are always remembered -- for example, anemones for former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain and roses for President Francois Mitterrand of France. These insights and more are revealed on every page of Flowers, White House Style.
Stunning photographs and step-by-step instructions will inspire all those who love flowers to recreate the more than forty detailed historic and contemporary arrangements in the book and bring the elegance of the White House into their homes.
Temple describes lavish floral centerpieces and impressive flower designs ranging from those created for numerous State Dinners and three White House weddings (Tricia Nixon; Lynda Bird Johnson and Luci Baines Johnson) to garlands and wreaths for spectacular White House Christmas celebrations. With ample ideas and tips on vases, flowers, and tools, Temple and Finegold make these beautifully artistic creations accessible to everyone. Whether you are a professional looking for inspiration or simply an enthusiast who loves the natural beauty of fresh blooms, Flowers, White House Style will be the book you'll turn to.
Filled with revealing anecdotes and behind-the-scenes information on the workings of the White House that only Dottie Temple can provide, Flowers, White House Style offers history, inspiration, and innovative ideas in a lush and exquisitely designed volume.
Customer Reviews:
THIS IS TERRIBLE book, NO SUBSTANCE! DO NOT BUY!.......2004-08-21
Unless you are an extemely avid flower collector, I can honestly say that this book would be a waste of anyone's money. I personally cannot think of a more trite, soulless, and uninspiring topic. An individual might find this book somewhat entertaining for the first five minutes, but then you start to see the redundancy and transparency of the floral layouts.
I would much rather buy a book the focuses on floral arrangements across the country, designed and cultivated by regular people. I don't like viewing or reading about floral designed created by people with who's concepts lacked all sense of ingenuity and charm. An unlimited budget and lack of motivation paved the way for these gaudy and self-serving floral arrangements.
Very Nice.......2003-06-22
For anyone interested in White House history, this book is a must! I have enjoyed reading it over and over.
Beautiful Book!.......2002-12-17
What a lovely book! It is a nice mix of flower arrangements and tips, photos of arrangements in the White House in recent times, and historical survey of flowers and their importance in the President's house. It is interesting to see the floral styles of each first lady. Those women actually exerted a strong hand in the "look" of the florals for their home on Pennsylvania Ave.
What a contrast of the Johnson girl's wedding with that of the Nixon daughter! Wow, talk about different styles, and they were not all that far apart in time!
There are beautiful watercolor illustrations as lead in to each chapter. They seem to be uncredited--at least, I would not find the artist's name after looking carefully. Like any other book these days, there are small factual errors. Tricia Nixon is referred to as the Nixon's youngest daughter (she is their eldest) and Allium Gigantium is called "tropical" (gee, it grows in my midwest garden surviving all winters.)
But those are small quibbles. Really, this is a lovely book and I enjoyed it!
Boffo!.......2002-10-18
I loved this book and even though I am not interested in learning how to arrange "stems" - this book is beautiful to look at and very interesting to read!
Very few folks get to have the job Dottie had and her insights and stories are super!
If you love the White House and it's history...add this book to your library! If you want to learn how to put together some of those famous White House arrangements - this book will show you how!
Much more than a "how to" book...filled with backstage stories and interesting info!
Thanks Dottie!

Book Description
Kenneth Turner is the floral decorator par excellence, the unsurpassed master, who, with his unique designs, has turned a craft into an art. Here, for the first time, he describes in detail the principles and techniques behind his work. From basic skills to breathtaking grand designs, The Floral Decorator contains step-by-step instructions, over forty projects for self-contained decorations, and sumptuous illustrations of Turner's work, making it invaluable to anyone who until now has only been able to marvel at the master's creations.
Turner begins with explanations of basic procedures essential for any successful decoration, whatever the size. With his inimitable enthusiasm and direct approach, he discusses the importance of color, texture and shape, and shows how to plan a design to complement its surroundings. He then goes on to demonstrate simple techniques such as wiring ingredients for displays and creating moss and wire moulds; he also explores the wide range of containers available and how to prepare them.
Using a host of natural ingredients, from fresh and dried flowers to vegetables and foliage, from herbs and potpourri to shells and driftwood, Turner then creates decorations for all situations and all occasions. Around the home, be it a country cottage or a stylish town house, rooms are brought to life with garlands, table decorations, free-standing displays, mirror wreaths and more. Dinner parties large and small, formal and informal, are transformed into unforgettable events with decorations for table centerpieces, chair backs and even plates. Finally, special occasions such as weddings, anniversary parties and Christmas are celebrated in true Turner style with a breathtaking array of festive pieces, from bridal bouquets to aisle displays, scented garlands to ribboned wreaths.
With helpful tips on every page, lists of ingredients, tools and accessories, and fully illustrated, clearly described projects for decorations in every section, this book will be both an inspiration and an essential practical grade for all amateur decorators and lovers of flowers.

A Quite Good Book for Proffesional Decorator.......2003-03-09
Kenneth Turner sure is an experienced floral decorator. His book shows his love of *wild* flower arranging, not formal one. It will definitely a plus value to have this book if you are a proffesional decorator. But it is quite hard for a beginner to follow. It doesn't have a very clear Step by Step like The Complete Guide to Flower Arranging by Jane Packer (DK Living). But still I think this book is quite worth buying.

Book Description
This book deals with skin cancer from a doctor's and a patient's perspective.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book; Great Doctor.......2006-04-06
This book is a must for any melanoma patient or their family.
As a one-year survivor of Stage II melanoma, this book was great in helping me deal with my diagnosis and what could have been ahead.
Dr. McClay also happens to be my personal oncologist and he's a fantastic and caring doctor.
This book is a must!.......2005-10-26
If you've been diagnosed with melanoma, this book is a must! The day I was told I had cancer, I was so frightened and confused. The doctor asked me if I had any questions, and I couldn't think of anything! The word "cancer!" just kept going through my mind. After reading this book, I was able to clear my head and not only ask questions, but ask the "right" questions. The only thing it didn't cover is the fact that it is sometimes difficult to diagnose melanoma. Sometimes the results are not black or white...there are also grey areas. But all in all, this book was extremely informative. Highly recomended.
Opened my eyes..........2004-06-01
I am at high risk for skin cancer being pale skinned, light eyed, blonde and living in San Diego. I never knew it was better for me to use sunblock and stay out of the sun instead of trying to go for a base tan, especially in a tanner. Tans only have a suncreen of SPF 5, come to find out. And even people with naturally dark skin need to wear sunblock because they can get skin cancer too, often in parts that go unchecked due to the fact people think their darker skin isn't at risk! These are two of the many "myths" brought out in this guide. Everyone should read this book so they know the facts about these horrible diseases.
This book blew my mind. I have found out the difference between UVA and UVB (and UVC) rays, how to protect myself from the sun and how to check myself to make sure I don't have skin cancer. I am not a real sun lover, but I amazed at all the myths people have about how the sun is healthy and how it is ok to hang out in the sun...people worry more about terrorism and serial killers than the sun and more people will die from skin cancer than dying, let's say, in a plane...it confuses me how people can be so little informed.
This book was written well. It is easy to read and it is sectioned in a way that it is easy to get to the answer you need. I was only going to read the first half, since the rest is about what to do if you have skin cancer, but I read that too, because it was interesting and I would rather know and be prepared if it happens in my future than not know. Like I say, this should be given out at schools in the San Diego area since many of them make the kids eat outside, which is the worst thing for them.

The Fellowship: The Untold Story of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Taliesin Fellowship
ASIN: 0764913352 |
Book Description
Cornelia Brierly was one of the first apprentices to attend Frank Lloyd Wright's school of architecture. Before long, she was a working colleague of the master architect; during the last thirty years of his career, she made important design contributions to many of his building projects. Brierly has spent most of her life at Wright's Taliesin (Wisconsin) and Taliesin West (Arizona).
This lavishly illustrated memoir tells the story of nearly seventy years spent with the Taliesin Fellowship. It is an important work, not only because of the author's closeness to the twentieth century's foremost architect but because she has observed at first hand the unfolding of organic architecture -- Wright's design precepts made manifest. In an affectionate, honest, and preceptive book, she celebrates the fellowship as a way of life and brings to life a vibrant community that is still going strong, forty years after Wright's death.
176 pages, size: 10" x 10." 150 color and black-and-white photographs, hardbound book with dust jacket.
