Review of Homeopathic Psychology.......2007-08-24

While I would have liked a more clinical approach, this book has a lot of excellent information. For some of the constitutional types the author dsecribes, the descriptions are too general and vague, but even in those chapters, there is a lot of very useful information. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting a more in depth understanding of constitutional types.

Excellent Insights.......2007-05-18

This book is a great back-up reference for aspiring or practicing homeopaths (or, truthfully, for anyone wanting better understanding of why some people act the way they do).

I think the author is a great writer. He really paints full pictures of the various remedy types he covers.

In reality though, I have found that no one is only one remedy type (constitution); people generally have a few "constitutions" that predominate. This is why not everything he says about a type is true. The profiles must be taken in holistically and intuitively, not as set in stone.

The only "problem" I have with this author is his never changing doses of 10M. This is really bad advice!! I take the LM potencies -- 10Ms would not only jar my system, but they simply don't go deep enough or last long enough to bring cure. Hahnemann created the LM potencies specifically because 20% of his patients didn't heal all the way with the C potencies (M potencies are at the high end of the C scale). And even if a patient doesn't want to do the LMs, he may need a 200C or a 30C or who knows? But all patients, most certainly (!) do not "automatically" need or respond favorably to the 10M potency. Potency is a very, very individual thing (see Sankaran's work, or read Neil Tessler's interview with Divya Chhabra as two examples of the highly individualist nature of choosing the best potency for each individual patient).

Too much bias.......2006-06-28

After reading, I am not sure if this book is an objective description the constitutional types or a ranking of Phillip Bailey's personal favorites. It is easy to pick up on a theme that the author has some kind of personal problem with the idiosyncrasies of the majority of the consitutional types. He goes on and on about silica, sulphur and phosphorous which he loves and basically trashes most of the others. It comes off as very judgemental.

He states with authority some concepts in here which are highly questionable. He states over and over that people can willy-nilly change constitutions, for any number of reasons, as they age. He also describes specific disease states as constitution types (e.g. tuberculinum). His thoughts on the "layering" of constitutions are muddled and leave you asking "does this guy think people really have a core constitutional type or not !?". When you start call the emotional state-of-the-day a "constitutional type" per se then that sort of waters down the concept of a constitutal type to nil doesn't it?

I also was skeptical about the claimed "rarity" of seemingly not-too-uncommon constitutional types (e.g. a male pulsatilla). If fact the -constant- gender polarization is annoying and I think misguided. Am I the only one who thinks this author does not like women very much?

Ok having aired my complaints, thanks to Phillip Bailey on addressing a subject in need with an interesting style. There are many intersting comments (and fewer facts) in the book. This is not a great book but I don't know of a better one on the subject.

A very in-depth book about 35 constitutional remedies.......2005-06-26

This book has written out of the author's own practical experience and his deep descriptions makes the remedies types "come to life" in front of you.
The very clear and thorough explanations and examples makes the 35 most commonly seen constitutional remedies highly understandable.
You will not regret having this book!

Very Victorian Inspired Cards.......2007-01-18

I hate to be the one that is negative, but while the layout and cover of this book are beautiful, the reason I gave this book three stars was because I felt like there could be more variety, once you see one example the rest are pretty much the same. Also, the style of the book is very victorian and had a little bit of a 'grandma' feel for my taste. I felt like this would make a pretty coffee table book.

Exellent Reference Guide.......2007-01-23

My mother recommended this book to me and I use it often. Very good!

Useful and unique, but needs updating.......2006-08-08

The supplement industry moves at light speed at introducing new products, so the fact that this book is six years old is somewhat of a hindrance. However, that being said, it has a unique medical perspective on just about every vitamin, herb, and mineral you could think of.

Each supplement included in the book includes short sections starting with "Basic Information" that shows foods that include the supplement, if any exist. Also there are sections on known effects (studied and proven), possible additional effects (proven via anecdotal evidence), warnings and precautions, and notes for those who are breastfeeding, infants and children, and senior citizens. There is also information on storage, safe dosage, toxicity, and adverse reactions.

This book is written by an M.D., so it does seem a bit overly cautious at times, but in the age of the Internet with so many snake oil salesmen claiming they have the cure for everything from Alzheimer's to diabetes in a nutritional supplement, I find this voice of caution refreshing. I consider this book just one more weapon in my arsenal of nutritional knowledge.

I also recommend the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing". That book focuses on specific illnesses, while this book focuses on the herbal remedies and nutritional supplements mentioned in that book. They definitely make good companion reading.

I found this book to be quite helpful. It provided natural sources, effects, deficiency and overdose symptoms, side effects, warnings, and toxity. This ranged from generally safe for adults under 45 to slightly dangerous or do not take. Side effects of an overdose ranged from none known, diarehha to coma. I looked up several different things and they were all there. This is a reference guide, not a how-to. I like having a balance to whatever marketing information is out there.

Why was this book written?.......2004-07-05

We (a class of about 20) used this book in a Nutrition Class. This was one of two books recommended for reference for in-class discussions. We would talk about something and then look it up in one of two or three books we had and someone would read the data. I would say that if we took an opinion poll of the 20 folks in the class, they all would say they were frustrated at the lack of "how to use", "when to use" information in this book. In fact the book goes a long way [or is it's main theme seems to be to Warn us of the dangers of the herb, mineral and supplements]. I can completely see that a Doctor wrote this and is protecting himself from lawsuit being excessively careful in the discussion. However, I don't understand the reason why this book was written in this fashion. It's marginally useful - low scale of usefulness. There are better books.

To me it apperared that the doctor that wrote this book never practiced dispensing the material for healing purposes - he just wrote this book as a "translation" of medical information. No indication was given if the author is an opponent or proponet of alternative medicines.

The bottom line is that the book was all but useless to us in our Nutrition Class...where we were working towards a "practitioner" level.

The sections are heavily weighed to show "Warnings and Precautions", "Overdose/Toxicity", "Adverse Reactions or Side Effects". In fact they could shrunk the book by 1/2 as most of the text was related to warnings and it droned on with the exact same warning text in pretty much every thing that was discussed. A symbol to reflect the dangers could have been posted to each item.

Who is this book good for? The book is [relatively] cheap so anyone wanting to start out in getting the "vocubalary" of this type of information = names of supplements, minerals, and herbs - their origin - alternate names and latin names and a very brief [one or two words] on when to use. If nutrition or healing is but a passing fad to you, you'll do ok with this book - it'll bore you sufficiently to pass on the subject.

If you are even the least bit serious about learning or understanding herbs and supplements and want to try and experiment with these, then DO NOT get this book - it will not help you - you won't learn dosages or how to make a tea or an infusion with this, what it looks like, when to use, how to get access or how it's taken [pill, liquid] look elsewhere, there are much much better texts for the "practical" people.

An alternate book could be "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" found as a customer-reference in lots of health food store. It's written for the same audience but conveys acutal and practical information. [This was our other in-class reference, by the way].

Dr. Ulene's Complete Guide is an extremely useful reference book to have on the shelf. Its information is up-to-date and in-depth - and readable! Its format lends itself both to quick, specific reference and to slow, random browsing. I've found it indispensible in answering particular questions, and I've also enjoyed skimming through the pages whenever I have a spare moment. My knowledge of vitamins, minerals, and herbs has definitely increased since I've had this book, and I recommend it as a great reference source.

Ireland revisited.......2007-09-28

The American years are fascinating, considering the early years of trauma and gaol.To be so very able ,politically and as editor of Pilot affirms my faith in the Irish,no matter their trials.
As a child in Canada,watching the Loyal Orange Lodge parade against "the Micks" in celebration of William of Orange and the battle of the Boyne, which in essence tried to squelch the Irish in their own land,Iam gratified to be reawakened to the fact that the spirit of men and women like O'Reilly is always on fire.
Spent time in Ireland this summer, the reminders of the occupation are alive and well, thank God.
