Book Description
three journals I had kept during World War II. In these yellowing pages, still covered and protected with 1944 brown paper grocery bags, I had hoped to find something about my youth that would, perhaps, illuminate and even explain the exciting journey I am, at the moment, slowly completing. Surprisingly, rereading my teen-age entries (written in blue-black Waterman’s ink and with lots of misspelling), this “older edition” was buoyed-up by the sensitivity and insight of his youthful counterpart.
When the war in Europe ended, and with our military converted to an Army of Occupation, we “young kids in uniform” had to make rapid psychological adjustments. Our focus changed from serving our country to, possibly, serving our own needs?
Sexuality rapidly rose to first place. The German girls were beautiful. Why fight it? I fell in love with a young woman whom my family would consider a Nazi. (Wasn’t every German a Nazi?) What was I going to do when I got back? Bring my girlfriend? Tell my Jewish parents and friends in the Bronx that despite the death camps the Germans could still be pretty nice, intelligent people...even loveable?
Young people reading this book will be impressed by how the thoughts of an 18-year old in 1944 are still vitally significant today. Older folks might learn to re-connect with the kid still within them.

Book Description
1921. Giordano Bruno is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of the Middle Ages. Ardent champion of freedom of thought in an age hide- bound by tradition, impetuous, brilliant, enthusiastic, and daring, he has been well described as "a comet that flashed across Europe." "This blazing spark of a fiery life" is the expression used by another writer; while a third has declared that "the red glow of Bruno's funeral pyre was the rosy dawn of modern thought in Europe." This little book relates a short biographical account of this intriguing man.

Customer Reviews:
easy to use.......2007-10-06
Got this book for a class. It's easy to use, includes different variations of signs that might be used. As with any sign book though, you have to try to figure out what the sign will look like in action from a drawing.
comprehensive start to ASL.......2007-02-04
I have taken ASL classes and was using this book as a review. It's pretty comprehensive and contains substantive amounts of nouns (both concrete and abstract), verbs, adjectives, etc. The pictures and the descriptions are very helpful too.
Good introduction for self-teaching of the basics of ASL.......2002-05-17
Good book for getting started... after reading and using it you may want to get a more complete education in Sign Language.
Excellent Resource.......2001-05-18
This is very helpful for those wishing to learn some basic sign language.
Great for beginners.......1998-10-24
This book is great for beginners. It shows you alot of signs that would get you started and on your way. However, our class has learned that because all of the signs are not 'universal', we needed an ASL dictionary to go along with it. The discriptions of the signing actions need to be read a couple of times in some instances to understand what you are susposed to do. But is is good for a beginner to get the basics.
Customer Reviews:
Not so fast--beautiful but flawed.......2006-03-31
Yes, this cookbook is beautiful and a welcome addition to growing library of books associated with the Church's liturgical year. BUT the recipes are deeply flawed. It's obvious that the author did not really test the recipes--for example, the sesame/anise bread for St. Joseph's Day calls for 4 cups flour, 6 eggs, 2 cups water, and 1/2 cup of melted shortening. Anyone who knows how to cook would know instantly that you will not end up with a kneadable dough with those quantities but rather a form of library paste. So beware if you try to cook from this book.
Great to give as a gift.......2006-02-25
I've purchased this cookbook on two separate occasions (as a Christmas gift and as a graduation gift), to give to a man and to a young woman, both of whom really appreciated the book. It has impressive illustration work, a wealth of historical information, and a variety of interesting and unique recipes. A nice display book as well.
Christian Cooking Inspiration!.......2003-02-08
Cooking with the Saints, by Ernst Schuegraf, is a magnificent volume of cooking inspiration for Catholics. This full-color hard-cover book is so elegant, I hated to drop batter on the beautifully designed pages! At 330 pages, this heavy volume covers recipes for saints from Agnes to Wilfrid. The recipes have been meticulously culled from many nations, traditions, and time periods, to arrive to us in one complete book.
The recipes have conversions for United States and European cooks. Each recipe features a short biography of it's namesake saint, as well as full-color photograph. The recipes are diverse and include: Stuffed Peppers in Walnut Sauce, Soup for Saint Francis Xavier's Day, Melachrino Cake, Saint Margaret's Lebkuchen, Saint Martin's Day Duck, Saint Roch's Fingers, and Saint Theresa's Bread.
The 3-page Introduction by Schuegraf tells us the story of his inspiration. He discusses some of the differences cooking and baking has undergone, and tells us that he has done his best to retain the recipes as they were found. Some of the recipes are pulled from antique cookbooks, and many others were carefully researched at St. Francis Xavier Library.
Saint Barbara, pages 33 - 36, is a prime example of the quality of work put into this book. The biography of Saint Barbara encompasses what is known of her life from the third century, a thirteenth-century book about her, and even legends about her father. Page 33 features a beautiful fifteenth century painting of her by Jan Van Eyck. The author attributes three recipes to Saint Barbara's name: Saint Barbara Cake, Pork Tenderloin Saint Barbara, and Dessert for Saint Barbara's Day.
I prepared the Saint Barbara Cake in my kitchen at home. The ingredients were readily on hand: butter, sugar, eggs, flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and a lemon. This cake has a silky texture, due to the large amount of cornstarch that goes into the recipe. The cake possesses a light, lemony flavor with a dense but silky texture. It is a perfect accompaniment to your morning ritual, substitute this lovely cake on December 4th (Saint Barbara's day) for your muffin or bagel.
Ernst Schuegraf has created a treasure for Christian bakers with Cooking With the Saints. Christians can enhance their experience of the holy days with their families by cooking from this volume. Enjoy!
Impressive Book.......2003-01-02
I received this beautiful book last year as a Christmas present and am quite happy to share it with others. Not only are the recipes delicious, but the photography is remarkable and the historical research is extraordinary. This book was obviously a labour of love. While some can compare this book to the works of Martha Stewart in terms of its presentation, this does not reflect the character of the book or its author. Ignoring this book simply because one does not like Martha Stewart is ridiculous. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cooking, art, travel, or history.
cooking with the Saints.......2002-10-26
I am a Catholic and a good cook. I would not buy this book because of the review! I do not like Martha Sterart way before she got caught for insider trading.
I imagine I am not the only person who feels this way!
Thanks,
NS

I have many of Debbie's books but this is my least favorite. There is nothing in it I care to make. I was very disappointed.
Beautiful Ideas.......2006-04-25
This book is so beautifully presented it should be marketed as a coffee table book. The patterns are really beautiful and very usable around the home. I really enjoyed making some of the items, and the patterns were easy to follow. The wool recommended was very expensive, but I managed to interchange with little problem. I would recommend this book.

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Chinese Medicine is a fine prescription for those tired of the bureaucracy or the ineffectiveness of Western medicine. It's also a good resource for those who are just interested in exploring ways to improve their general health. Replete with hundreds of color photographs that lucidly introduce and explain the arts of acupuncture, meditation, acupressure massage, and herbalism, the book includes fitness programs such as qigong and taiji, which help to unblock Qi (pronounced "chee"), the body's life force. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) focuses on Qi and maintains that imbalances of Qi cause illness. The Complete Illustrated Guide shows the meridians, or energy fields, that determine the placement of acupuncture needles to stimulate the Qi. It also explains shen the mental aspect of the body; jing, the constitution; and zangfu, the organ systems. Numerous case studies show how traditional Chinese medical techniques have been used to diagnose and treat patients with various complaints, including heartburn, PMS, and exhaustion. Overall, this is a solid, beautifully organized resource for the family that you'll turn to again and again.
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated, full-color book explains the basic principles of Chinese medicine, the causes of disharmony in the body that lead to disease and the Chinese approach to diagnosis and treatment.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent coffee table Chinese Medicine book!.......2007-01-22
Concise and clear introduction to Chinese Medicine. Easy to read and understand.
Great resource for Chinese/Eastern medincine.......2005-09-22
This is an excellent book to have as a reference fo eastern methodologies in medicine and healing. Unfortunately it is long out of print, but if you can get your hands on a copy of this text, you will not be dissappointed. In fact, if you are unhappy with it, I will be happy to purchase it from you as I have many peers that would happily use it.
Ancient tradition, many modalities.......2004-07-27
Over 3000 years old, Chinese medicine is based on the Taoist holistic vision of balancing all the body harmonies. This book is a lavishly illustrated and complete guide to every aspects of this tradition. It is not a self-help book, but a guide explaining the concepts and principles and providing a detailed description of certain therapeutic exercises that everyone can use to optimise health.
Part One explores the theories behind the medicine, including basic principles like Yi and Yang, the basic substances like Qi and energy flow, the meridian system, the zangfu system and the causes of disharmony.
Part Two considers the Chinese approach to diagnosis, including diagnostic techniques like looking, hearing, questioning and touching, and includes an overview of the patterns of disharmony.
Part Three deals with Chinese approaches to treatment, including the principles of treatment and diagnosis and specific modalities like acupuncture, herbalism, qigong and lifestyle factors such as exercise, diet and feng shui.
The Further Reading section consists of bibliographies under headings like general, herbal, diet and others. A list of useful addresses in various countries is supplied and the At-A-Glance Directory is an illustrative index to finding treatments. The book concludes with a glossary and index and contains full colour illustrations and photographs.
lfoote.......2000-08-06
This book was loaned to me by a fellow physician and I had a hard time giving it back. It's a great resource for information that covers a little of everything in Chinese Medicine. I practice acupuncture and have found much of the information useful for preparing lectures, not only for the general public, but for other physicians as well. It's a versatile book good not only for it's comprehensive content, but also as a coffee table book as the illustrations are great. Would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the vast offerings of Chinese Medicine.
Good introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine.......2000-03-08
As a physician who is studying and doing acupuncture, I find this a good basic introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is heavily illustrated, which helps the reader to understand some very difficult concepts, which are alien to the Western mind, especially for medical personnel. I can highly recommend it for someone who is interested in becoming familiar with Acupuncture and other Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Book Description
Rarely if ever does the creative artist receive either the recognition or the recompense he deserves and needs. Lisa A. Miles brings this truism to vibrant life in This Fantastic Struggle, the biography of Esther Phillips. Woven together with letters, interviews, scholarly source material, institution documents and art work, this unique cultural essay presents an absorbing glimpse at what it means to be an artist. Born in Russia, raised in Pittsburgh by a family that couldnt appreciate her artistic identity, Esther left for Greenwich Village in the 1930s and never looked back. And an artist Esther was, though it cost her deeply. Despite early critical success, she was not able to make a living during the Depression and was institutionalized for over six years, likely for the results of starvation and stress. After her release, she returned to her art and to the Village, where her struggle continued. Eventually she lapsed into obscurity, but not before saying she had lived a wonderful life. This Fantastic Struggle is also the story of friendship--the kind that keeps alive both friends and art work that would otherwise have been lost to the world.
This book will appeal to a long list of individuals--art professionals & creative artists of all disciplines; historians, librarians & archivists; those in the mental health profession; art therapists; those captivated by Pittsburgh history, Greenwich Village, the Abstract Expressionists, letters, diaries, journals, interviews & all that comprise the literary and oral tradition; those with an interest in FDRs WPA programs, psychology and life philosophies, sociology, cultural studies & the cause of women artists; and those who simply like the creatively-layered design of a true story, befitting the creative nonfiction genre. This Fantastic Struggle will certainly prompt a general adult readership to better understand a minority group, but most importantly, to examine their own passions, and their own lives.

Book Description
This is the first of two volumes offering for the first time an authoritative and complete prosopography of post-Conquest England, 1066-1166. Based on extensive and wide-ranging research, the two volumes contain over eight thousand entries on persons occurring in the principal English administrative sources for the post-Conquest period -- Domesday Book, the Pipe Rolls, and Cartae Baronum. Continental origin is a major focus of the entries, as well as the discussion of family and descent of fees which characterise the whole work; genealogical tables are included. An introduction discusses Domesday prosopography; an appendix gives the Latin texts of the Northamptonshire and Lindsey surveys.Post-Conquest genealogy and manorial history start with Domesday Book: genealogists will welcome this work. Dr KATHERINE KEATS-ROHAN was awarded the Prix Brant IV de Koskull 1998 by the Confederation Internationale de Genealogie et d'Heraldique for her work on Domesday People. She is Director of the Linacre Unit for Prosopographical Research.
Customer Reviews:
An extraordinary resource.......2001-10-25
Prosopography is the study of pedigree, biography, and genealogy, especially among royal and noble families (i.e., those of power and influence in society), including the study of family names, and focusing especially on the person, his environment and his social status -- that is, the individual within the context of family and other social groups, the place or places in which he was active, and the function he performed within his society. Keats-Rohan is director of the Unit for Prosopographical Research at Linacre College, Oxford, and this project is an heroic attempt to synthesize the genealogy of families in the first century following the Conquest and the histories of the manors which they either owned or labored on. For "only by determining the identities of persons concealed in a repetitious mass of names in the text of Domesday Book can we hope to understand what happened next, or who was who in subsequent records such as the Pipe Rolls." Domesday Book contains some 45,000 personal names, many of them duplications since tenants-in-chief held land in several counties. If you also leave out the churches (as tenants) and the surviving English tenants, fewer than 20,000 names remain, and about 8,000 of those are identified by forename alone. The author has analyzed 19,500 records of continental names into about 2,500 individual persons, including some 200 tenants-in-chief and about 600 Englishmen. Their entries, which make up the bulk of this large volume, range from a single sentence (Harduin was a"Domesday tenant of William fitz Nigel under earl Hugh in Chester") to several pages for those at the top. Citations to appearances in Domesday Book itself, as well as in later charters and other sources, are very complete. The descendants of the great men whom the new king made tenants-in-chief became the great barons of the English feudal system, and nearly all of them appear here. For instance, Eudo Dapifer, son of Hubert de Ryes, married Rohais, daughter of Richard de Clare. One of Eudo's tenants in 1086 was Osbert, husband of his sister Muriel. Eudo also acquired the land previously held by his brother, Adam, who was a tenant of Bishop Odo. Farther down the social ladder were men like Herbrand de Sackville, tenant of Walter de Giffard, who had sons named Jordan, William, and Robert, and a daughter named Avice, who married Walter d'Auffay. The author also has included seventy-five pages of background history and prosopographical methodology, which make this work very accessible to the non-specialist. This is apparently the first published installment (there are also several online databases) of an extraordinary and fascinating enterprise which should open new avenues of research for those interested in medieval English genealogy.
