An uplifting book on depression!.......2007-09-06
Paradoxically enough, Lisa's book on teenage depression was quite uplifting! While recognizing and validating the severity of the increasing levels of depression and suicide attempts in teenage girls, Lisa's book also offers hope. The theme of her book is nicely summarized in her introductory comment of: "No matter how despairing [teenage girls] may feel, there is always a spark of hope with them, and the energy to make their troubles visible to themselves and others."
The book focuses on how we can keep our eyes and ears open the language of teenage depression, and ultimately help the girls find their "spark." Lisa illustrates how teenage girls are especially at risk for depression when they silence their inner core of self in an attempt to conform and belong with others. Empty inside, these girls crave genuine connections to bring them back to life. This book helps to pave that road from isolation to connection.
The Disappearing Girl also offers a look into the cognitive, societal, and developmental contributors of teenage depression, as well as tools and resources to help these girls develop coping strategies and healthy relationships to help them in their struggles. If you're a parent of an adolescent girl, then you need to read "The Disappearing Girl" by Dr. Lisa Machioan. With it being written specifically for depression in teenage girls, it is a very helpful resource for parents, friends and even the disappearing girl herself to use when a teenage girl you know or you yourself are experiencing signs of depression. It uses real-life stories told by girls who have been in all kinds of situations involving depression and even suicide attempts to give the reader an honest look at the many different things that may spark depression in the teenage girl. For anyone who liked "Silencing the Self" by Dana Crowley Jack -- that was research about depressed women -- this is a very similar book about depressed girls. What makes those two books so valuable is that they are based on counseling actual women and girls--not on theoretical psychology derived in the vacuum of an ivory tower.

Great little Christmas book.......2004-12-13
After Martha Stewart went to prison, I guessed that perhaps the price of her books would go down due to lack of demand for them.
I bought two of these books as Christmas gifts for relatives, because I have always admired her work and presentation qualities. In ordering them as gifts, considering her past work, I felt safe in assuming that my relatives would be pleased with them. They were! I know I got two fantastic bargains. I have heard a lot of negative things about Stewart as a person, but her work is top-rate regardless of her personality traits. Even if you never make any of the recipes, the pictures are great to look at and the recipes are fun to read.

I have read this newly-published cookbook from cover to cover today and I LOVE IT! It's not surprising Martha Stewart could put together a collection of recipes representing the Christmas holiday. Some cookbooks only focus on Christmas cookies or only Thanksgiving, but this cookbook highlights sophisticated recipes from drinks (I hadn't seen a Ramos Gin Fizz in a cookbook ever!) to entrees and of course, desserts. Sure, there are only so many things you can do with cranberries, chestnuts, hazelnuts, and pumpkins, but these are not tired, redone recipes just so she could publish yet another cookbook. This book is polished, much like the format of her h'ors d'oeuvres book. Beautiful photographs, great recipes. Anyone who loves cooking during the Christmas holidays, and not just bake cookies, will definitely love this cookbook!

I did not get a lot out of this book. The largest single section of the book was about breeding cichlids-- there was not a lot of discussion about individual species, compatability, or how a beginning aquariast might be able to start a cichlid aquarium. The book did have some interesting information about cichlids in their native habitat, and a few fun anecdotes/stories. However, as an aquarium neophyte, I found I had little more practical knowledge about keeping cichlids after I read this book than before I started.

This little book gives a thorough overview of cichlid care and keeping. It discusses how to evaluate fish before you buy, basic information on water requirements, the types of aquascaping you should use with different kinds of cichlids, diseases and treatment, and breeding (cichlids are usually easy to breed and lots of fun to watch). The photos are informative and good quality. Some are black and white, but there is a section of color photos as well. Although this is an older book, the information is basic and still applies to cichlid care.

I purchased several gardening books together and this one was the highlight. Not only beautifully photographed but full of interesting suggestions and writing. My husband and I were able to immediately use some of the arrangements as inspiration for a new bed in our garden. Turned out beautifully!

Picture quality is very good throughout the book, and in parts I and II ("the elements of design" and "bringing it all together") the picture content is excellent as well.
Unlike most container gardening books this one neither details container plantings nor uses captions, instead it inconspicuosly numbers each picture and then conspicuosly puts the number in the text with its corresponding description. Garden styles represented vary but the bold, Little-and-Lewis-type modernists lead the way, and even if this isn't your favorite style of garden you will probably love the containers featured in them!
What really sets this book apart is the variety of pots featured. Terra cotta and stone/concrete are great, and the English gardening books display some wonderful copper and lead, but those of you who especially love high quality glazed/rustic containers and know that it is not all that easy to find good examples of them will be happy to add this book to your collection.
The reasons I didn't give 5 stars are the book's slightly smallish size (9 1/4 x 8 1/2) and its 3rd part ("plant groups for containers") which, though it has some very interesting and unique plant picks (dark purple/black perennial clematis?), does not show most of them in containers; admittedly difficult to do, but David Joyce's "The Complete Container Garden" sure did it well. That's about eighty pages where pots are rarely pictured.
Overall a beautiful and inspiring book at a very good price.

This book has lots of ideas for containers, both for sunny and shady areas. Lots of pictures, lots of info on plants with color picture. I had picked up a unusual plant at a local nursey but did not really know anything about the plant and this book had a picture of the plant and care instructions for it. Has info on potting mix for window boxes, hanging planters,and containers, examples of window box designs and instructions, also examples of planted hanging baskets and window boxes, and containers.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis discusses VHDL modeling and simulation of a full custom Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) for a Digital Image Synthesizer (DIS). The DIS synthesizes the characteristic echo signature of a pre-selected target. It is mainly used against Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radars as an electronic counter measure. The VHDL description of the DIS architecture was exported from Tanner S-Edit, modified, and simulated in Aldec Active HDL(TM), Simulation results were compared with C++ and Matlab simulation results for verification. Main subcomponents, a single Range Bin Processor (RBP), a cascade of 4 RBP 5 and a cascade of 16 RBP 5 were tested and verified. The overhead control circuitry, including Self Test Circuitry and Phase Extractor, was tested separately. Finally, the overall DIS was tested and verified using the control circuitry and a cascade of 4 RBP 5 together, representing the actual 512 RBP 5. As a result of this research, the majority of the DIS was functionally tested and verified.

We have the power and the potential within ourselves to change and to compromise for the sake of a wonderful daughter/mother relationship.

Not like that sappy imitation book by that wall-eyed Cokie Roberts person. How many face lifts has that babe had anyway? Her toes must be curling up by now. The Firmans' book is for real women...and the men who fear them.

Book Description
"The enemies of the people must be torn out by the roots," read a sign Hilda Vitzthum observed in a public building shortly before her arrest in 1938. Her husband, a Russian engineer employed in the construction of a huge steelworks in western Siberia, was an "enemy of the people," a member of the educated classes that Stalin saw as a threat to his regime. Not only would he be a victim of Stalin’s madness; his whole family must be destroyed. Even though Hilda was an Austrian and, like her husband, a loyal Communist, her children were taken from her and she was condemned to forced labor.
Torn Out by the Roots is Hilda Vitzthum’s chilling reminiscence of her nearly ten years in Soviet labor camps—of privations and horrors of overwhelming enormity, mitigated by occasional kindness and humanity. It is a harrowing and moving story, all the more so for its simplicity and matter-of-factness.
Although Hilda Vitzthum was allowed to return to Austria in 1948, she could not write about her experiences until the 1980s. Before then, she says, "no one would have believed me if I had told the unvarnished truth." The dissolution of the Soviet Union compels us to record, so none may forget, the human cost of the Stalinist experiment.

This volume forms the first modern study of Edmund Campion, the Jesuit priest executed at Tyburn in 1581, and through him focuses on a theme that has been attracting growing interest among sixteenth-century historians: the passagefrom a Catholic to an Anglican England, and the resistance to this move.
