Book Description
Sir William Robertson served as the professional head of the British army and as the constitutional military adviser to both Asquith and Lloyd George from December 1915 to February 1918. This account, based on many new sources, critically examines his leadership of the general staff as the burden of fighting the main body of the German army shifted to the British. This study sheds light on the origins and conduct of the Somme and Passchendaele offensives, and the efforts to coordinate the Allied war effort, especially the controversial effort to subordinate Haig to General Nivelle and the creation of the Supreme War Council with its inter-allied staff. The civil-military conflict over the conduct of the war, especially the growing divide between Robertson and Lloyd George, receives special attention. The previously unexplored tension between Robertson and Haig who formed the most important military partnership in British history is also examined. This account represents the untold story of the higher direction of the war in Britain.
Customer Reviews:
Robertson, the lesser Field Marshal.......2004-09-13
A plainly absurd biography on Robertson, CIGS, and the only Fiied Marshal of the British Army who rose from the ranks, and most incompetent at that.
Whilst his bravery is indoubted, any sane person will question Robertson's qualifications to plan, and lead the BEF. A born intriguer and a devious person to boot, Robertson was an abject failure and his sacking by Lloyd George was long overdue.
And Hiag should get it too if only the PM had the courage.

Book Description
This book is a profound but practical testament to the healing power of balanced living and shows how Ayurveda's ancient principles of health can help you achieve the highest levels of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Tiwari provides a thorough profile of the seven body types and the foods best suited to each. Her book is the first to include a complete discussion of the personality or psychospiritual attributes of the Ayurvedic body types, as well as food charts, seasonal menus, and recommended daily routines for each type. A chapter on sadhanas focuses on activities of the hearth, home, garden, and community that activate our "cognitive memory" of right living. An extensive section of uncomplicated recipes, keyed to the body types, and another on home remedies help provide a painless transition to a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
Customer Reviews:
Good Ayurvedic treatise.......2007-03-22
I especially like the details, especially regarding dual dosha (for insance, Pitta/Vata) dietary guidelines. She includes many foods that aren't often in other Ayurvedic books. A good book to add to one's library.
A little overwhelming but valuable resource.......2007-01-11
Because this book contains such a wealth of knowledge, it may take a while to really get into it. However, it is highly informative and certainly a good addition to any library, especially for those interested in holistic health.
Get Your Life In Balance.......2005-10-30
I disagree with a previous reviewer that this book is mainly a cookbook. I find that it has MUCH more to offer than that.
I am currently in a 200 hour yoga teacher training course, and this book is required reading for me.
Tiwari goes very much into the philosophy behind Ayurveda and the doshas, yet explains it in a way that the average reader can understand. She gives the best explanations of each dosha that I've ever read, going into aspects such as career and sexuality, diet, exercise, physical and emotional traits.
She then gives food charts for the 10 doshas, instead of the usual three doshas that most do. She lists foods that are beneficial, and those that are not.
I find this book to be wonderful, and very accessible to the casual reader as well as the experienced person very into Ayurveda.
Super excellent book.......2005-09-09
Its a MUST to read book. If you want to improve your health, want to get the best of your body, read this book. It will help you learn about your body type, and "sadhanaas"(i.e. routines, food, etc) accordingly.
Forced to enter a one-line summary of my review.......1999-01-27
As far as I'm aware, there are only 2 books in existence that are vegetarian ayurvedic cookbooks--this one & "The Healing Cuisine" by Harish Johari; and i most highly recommend them both. (I do no recommend "the ayurvedic cookbook" by Morningstar... it is not veggie & really just a disappointment in terms of ingredients & the recipes). Tiwari is a very nice compliment to Dr. Lad's "Ayurveda: the science of self-healing", which is *the* definitive modern introduction to ayurveda. Tiwari's perspective is much more cosmic, poetic, and much about vibrational healing, cognitive memory and DNA alignment. As one reviewer noted, she makes reference to Hinduism & the more complex aspects of the mechanics of ayurvedic energetics that, even to those relatively familiar, will feel like walking thru mud... Visual representations & diagrams would be helpful, which this book is essential devoid of. That is my only complaint. the text could certainly be edited down to make room for more visuals. This is a complete guide for someone dedicated to an ayurvedic lifestyle--with charts covering the energetics & qualities of just about every food and their vibrational alignment with the body types, and daily & seasonal menus for the body types, all 10 of them. There is, among many things, a section on food sadhanas, or the ritualization of the nourishment process (food prep, cooking & eating). There are listings of ingredients & there's a glossary in the back of the more uncommon ingredients. She does not give much treatment to yoga asanas & pranayama, though there is treatment of daily routines. Now, unlike Johari, the recipes are all explicitly coded with respect to the 10 body types & the 4 seasons (i.e., which body types the recipes will help to balance & the season(s) in which they should be used)... A rather in-depth practical working guide to ayurvedic cooking. This along with Dr. Lad, and you're doing good.
Book Description
Queen of retro Linda Everett takes us back to a time when all meals were made from scratch and mealtimes were a family affair. From the colonial New England coast to the Wild West, RETRO PIES takes readers on a sojourn for the ultimate in comfort food. Classics such as Miz Lizzie's Chess Pie, Beacon Hill Apple Pie, Martha's Cherry Pie, and Red Brick Cafe's Banana Cream Pie are sure to become favorites all over again. From fruit pies to custard and cream fillings, from the hearty main course meat pies to a pie-dough clinic, RETRO PIES is the definitive guide to pies in America.
Customer Reviews:
hit or miss.......2006-05-30
I have now made 6 different pies from collection.
My first comment is that the crust recipes are FABULOUS. I have never made better crusts, and I routinely get compliments on how flavorful, flaky, and golden they taste.
My second comment is that the fruit pies by and large seem to work out perfectly well, aren't too sweet, and are easy recipes to follow.
I have been unable to make any of the cream pies work. The recipe instructions are insufficient (for example, they don't tell you how *long* to cook down the custard, or how thick it should be before you pour it in to the crust). If you have no prior experience with cream pies, you will almost certainly get it wrong. I just finished making the Sugar Baby Pie. Even though the recipe says to bake it for 30 minutes until it sets, I baked it for 50 and it's still practically liquid. Given that the recipe calls for 2 cups of sugar and 1/2 pint cream, I find it hard to believe it ever *will* set under heat.
So if you want a pie cookbook that sometimes gets it right, this is the one for you.
Retro Pies: A Collection of Celebrated Family Recipes.......2005-10-26
I love these cookbooks, I have ordered three of them, one for me and two for Christmas gifts. One of my hobbies is collecting recipe books and this is one of the best!!
A must for cooks serving up meal time delights.......2004-05-06
In Retro Pies: A Collection Of Celebrated Family Recipes, freelance writer and nostalgia buff Linda Everett has brought together under one cover a culinary wealth of pies for all occasions. Beginning with an introduction to the history of pies, the preparation advice and recipes are clustered together in chapters devoted to "Pie Crust Clinic"; "Main Dish Pies"; Fruit Pies"; and "Custard Pies". From New England Portside Pie; Creole Pork Pie; Virginia Real Whiskey Apple Pie; and Rogue Valley Streusel Pear Pie; to Country Bridge Mincemeat Pie; Abe Lincoln's Favorite Lemon Pie; and Heartland Butterscotch Pie, Retro Pies is a wonderful celebration of the role pies play in American cuisine -- and a must for cooks serving up meal time delights for their pie-loving families!

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-08-11
If you are interested in keeping chickens on a small scale then I cannot recommend this book enough. It is designed for the absolute beginner with a small amount of space and should be required reading by all who fall into this category. It is also ideal for those with some knowledge or who already have poultry as the information is excellent. The best book I have read in this category and well worth the effort of finding and buying.
Book Description
You are invited on a journey into making landscape quilts and providing a bridge from traditional quiltmaking to scenic interpretation. The author leads you through a series of simple exercises designed to help you really see what you are looking at, to decide which images you favor, and to interpret them in fabric. Various simple quiltmaking techniques are combined in a building-block manner to make a fabric picture. Traditionally pieced blocks, whether sewn by hand or machine, are used to create large areas of a landscape. Sky, water, and land masses are made of these pieced sections, and the wonderful geometric shapes lend a subtle texture. She then shows how to add appliqu shapes and details to the background. In Your First Project, a very simple composition of trees, she takes you step by step through the process, then shows you how to add the 'Wow Factors,' those components that fool the eye into accepting illusion. 80 pages + large pull-out pattern section. AUTHORBIO: Mary's work hangs in private and public collections around the United States and Japan, and she has received recognition locally and nationally. Her quilts have been exhibited in numerous quilt shows and art shows from coast to coast, and she has pieces in the permanent collections of the White House and the Museum of the American Quilter's Society. Mary writes articles on technique, inspiration, and other professional topics, but her favorite creative activity is making quilted landscapes.
Customer Reviews:

Book Description
A dynamic program for empowering children to protect themselves
In Raising Kids Who Can Protect Themselves, Debbie and Mike Gardner share their decades of self-defense experience to show parents how to teach their children courage—the trait needed to make brave, smart, and safe choices, no matter what their age, no matter what the situation. Raising Kids Who Can Protect Themselves helps families foster courage in their children at an early age so that it becomes an inherent trait, rather than a situational need. The book features:
- Age-appropriate methods to instill courage in children without creating fear
- Courage coaching as a way to create a “family” defense system
- Lifesaving skills, such as quality eye contact, voice control, breathing, control of inappropriate crying, development of positive self-talk, and space awareness
- Ways to reduce children’s vulnerability
- Site-specific survival strategies, from parties to the mall to sports practice
Every time I watch the nightly news, I thank God my wife and children have been trained by Debbie and Mike Gardner. Please, please, please read this book as a family. You will learn how to avoid the most dangerous situations and fight your way out of the rest. We live in a very different world today—arm your family with the power of this book.
-Cris Collinsworth, Sports Commentator for Fox/HBO Sports
This book is brave, bold and one of the most important books I’ve read in a long time. A must for parents everywhere.
-Doug Hall, Author of Jump Start Your Business Brain
Customer Reviews:
Family Self Defense.......2007-05-29
As a father of 4, I am very concerned with teaching my children to be safe. This book has some very good advice and teaching methods to help. While I do not agree with everything, it is overall, a very good book to buy for help with this important mission.
Kind of Hit and Miss.......2007-02-17
This book does not deliver exactly what the title implies. It relies on bribery for your child to do what you want. I agree with rewarding appropriate behavior but this book takes it to far.
A guide all parents should have.......2005-03-11
This book covers everything from teaching children to protect themselves from bullies, among their peers, to protecting themselves from dangerous adults. It gives specific examples and language parents can use to empower their children. It also provides techniques for teaching children in set age groups. Arming our children with courage and tools to protect themselves is a necessity. I plan to give a book to each family in my circle of loved ones.
If You Love Your Children, You Will Read Gardners' Book .......2004-10-27
Debbie and Mike Gardner have written an absolute "must read" for parents. "Raising Kids Who Can Protect Themselves" is the best parenting book I've read in recent years. A fascinating page-turner, the Gardners' book is written in a simple-to-follow format filled from cover to cover with life-saving instruction. It doesn't matter if your children are toddlers or teens; this is a book worth much more than its purchase price. I have been recommending "Raising Kids Who Can Protect Themselves" to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. In fact, I plan to give copies as Christmas gifts! L.C. (mother of 16-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son)

Book Description
Carlos Lozano, a multifaceted artist, had an intimate relationship with Dalí and was one of the few people who managed to join his, almost impenetrable, circle of friends. From that privileged proximity he narrates what he saw and felt: the phrases and extraordinary reflections of the painter, the wild and crazy parties, the luxuries and the capacity that Dalí had to turn everything into gold. Much more than a simple biography, these memoirs -written by the prestigious writer Clifford Thurlow- can be read with the pleasure and emotion.
