5 out of 5 stars Great memory for details, humerous stories........2001-02-07

I enjoyed this book for personal reasons, but aside from that, I thought the author's perspective gave the stories depth to many of the impersonal aspects of the war. He is a great story teller, and adds that personal detail that makes them come to life. I recommend this book to young and old - in fact to anyone who wants to learn about this time period through the eyes of a young surgeon who served on five fronts and lived to tell about it.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully crafted, highly enjoyable book........1999-11-17

An able and highly enjoyable job of getting the facts out with the tone of our shared WW-II experiences. Am impressed with the precision of writing. Moore has done all of us a huge favor, and I, for one, am most grateful. Brig. General Robert A. Duffy, USAF (Ret.)

5 out of 5 stars An insight into one of the Greats.......2003-03-27

Karl Popper is yet another exceptional student of the Austrial school that produced a plethora of scientists, mathematicians, philosophers and economists at the turn of the century. The only other comparison would be the extraordinary number of scientists from tiny Scotland that almost single-handedly began the Industrial Revolution. Popper and friends were Renaissance men, masterful in numerous subjects, at ease in a laboratory, classroom or lecture hall.

They were rationalists of a specific kind. Not for them, the ramblings of a street preacher, social "activist" or leader of mass movements. Instead their actions were didactic, in the cause of something greater. Popper served as gadfly, professor, mathematician, scientist, philosopher and could be considered a spokesman for the groups. His life in Europe was remarkable for what was accomplished - oh, to have a such an inquiring, multi-faceted mind!!

This book is perhaps more approachable that some of his others. The title says it all; it is the story of the evolution of an intellect that seemed to retain its core. He was interested in so many things and so many areas that all his works are to some degrees syntheses of his interests. Whether he is admiring the logic of scientific discovery or the illogic of taxes, he is brillant, informative and endearing. The intellectual battles are here for all to see (and choose sides). He emerges with not only his mind but his soul intact.

This tender book about male friendship will probably surprise those readers who know Stephen Ambrose best for his histories of World War II and biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Born in 1936, Ambrose acknowledges in the introduction to his memoir that men of his generation do not speak or write easily about their feelings. Yet male bonding is a strong theme in all of his work, as selections from previous writings on Lewis and Clark, Richard Nixon, Crazy Horse, and General Custer that are included in Comrades prove. What is more interesting, however, is the more personal material on Ambrose's two brothers (their youthful competitiveness mellowed into mature devotion), fellow historian Gordon Mueller ("my dearest and closest friend"), and several college buddies. After losing touch with each other during the harried years of career building and child rearing, these men rediscovered intimacy in middle age. Most moving of all is the closing chapter on Ambrose's father, an old-fashioned authority figure and disciplinarian quick to criticize his sons, but always available to sustain and guide them. The warming of that rather stern relationship is clearly one of the great joys of his son's adult life. It makes a fitting finale to a dignified but strikingly sweet memoir. --Wendy Smith

        Book Description

From the author of Undaunted Courage and D-Day comes this celebration of male friendship, taken both from the pages of history and from Ambrose's own life.

Acclaimed historian Stephen Ambrose begins his examination with a glance inward -- he starts this book with his brothers, his first and forever friends, and the shared experiences that join them for a lifetime, overcoming distance and misunderstandings. He writes of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had a golden gift for friendship and who shared a perfect trust with his younger brother Milton in spite of their apparently unequal stations. With great feeling, Ambrose brings to life the relationships of the young soldiers of Easy Company who fought and died together from Normandy to Germany, and he describes with admiration three who fought in different armies on different sides in that war and became friends later. He recounts the friendships of Lewis and Clark and of Crazy Horse and He Dog, and he tells the story of the Custer brothers who died together at the Little Big Horn.

Comrades concludes with the author's moving recollection of his own friendship with his father. "He was my first and always most important friend. I didn't learn that until the end, when he taught me the most important thing, that the love of father-son-father-son is a continuum, just as love and friendship are expansive."

3 out of 5 stars A great theme treated without much depth.......2007-09-07

Stephen Ambrose wrote some good, seriously researched history books, but intermittently would publish some short volumes that seemed excerpted from his ambitious ones. They seemed to have been published for gift-giving occasions, like Christmas or birthdays. This short book seems to be one of them. His examination of some 'male bonding' between and among biological and comradely brothers is a bit thin, except perhaps for the chapter about himself and his own "brothers." He may have done it for the money; that's fine. Regardless, this book suffers from a cursory examination of some important relationships (Eisenhower brothers, Lewis & Clark, etc.) Toward the end of his career he told Charlie Rose on the latter's interview show that he was 'going to study war no more' and focus on writing about other aspects of history. Well, Christmas time rolled around and there was yet another retelling of some WWII material. The value in a book with an excellent theme of the nature of male friendship is that it may get some people interested in the subject matter history so it motivates them to read and learn more--which right now in our country would be a definite boon.

5 out of 5 stars The audio version is very good.......2007-04-05

Ambrose's stories of male friendship would be good in any format, but why read what Ambrose wrote when you can hear him read it to you? There is the added benefit of hearing Ambrose's emphasis on a phrase, his light-hearted tone in some areas and, even more important to the emotional punch of some of the stories, hearing his voice break at particularly touching moments (perhaps the most touching was a comment that is highlighted in HBO's 'Band of Brothers'. A veteran of Easy Company is asked by his grandson, "Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No. I served in a company of heroes.")

Ambrose focuused on the friendship he and his brothers share, his friends from college, from work, the friendships of Lewis and Clark, Dwight Eisenhower and his brother Milton, Lewis and Clark, the men of Easy Comapny in 'Band of Brothers', the friendship of men who fought against one another in war but meet again as old men and the friendship between Ambrose and his father. I was surprised that he did not mention the friendship that he shares with his sons since he did the friendship between he shared with his father.

Ambrose comments on the beauty of friendship between old men - no rivalry, nothing but support and love. He notes that he can't wait until he is old and can enjoy such friendships. Sadly, Ambrose died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 66.

I give this one a grade of A-

3 out of 5 stars An easy read, good but not great.......2007-03-22

This is a very short book, more a collection of short essays than a cohesive treatise on male friendships. The book praises male friendships, using the friendships between Eisenhower and Patton, Custer and his brothers, and Crazy Horse and He Dog as examples. But most of the book deals with the author, his friendships, and his relationships with his father and brothers. These parts of the book are somewhat self-congratulatory yet sad at the same time, because it seems that Ambrose 's relationship with his father was ultimately unsatisfying, though he claims otherwise. For example, the only conversation that the author had with his father about God or faith, apparently, was a brief conversation during a car ride in which they both agreed that there must be a heaven, since Abraham Lincoln would surely have gone to heaven. The author also alludes to, but ultimately skims over, his own alcohol abuse. (If his friendships were so great, as he claims, why did he need to drink so much?) Overall, though, the book was enjoyable and thought provoking.

        3 out of 5 stars A Little Diffirent.......2006-11-19

This is an easy, one day read about friendships. Not a bad book, but we are so used to the brilliance of Ambrose that we, or me anyway, may have had higher expectations than this book brought. It was a pretty good read, but most of all it made me want to read more of some of the friendships included. I'm an Ambrose fan so am glad to have this effort in my library.

4 out of 5 stars Different for Ambrose.......2005-09-22

Ambrose normally gives much detail to popular history when he writes, but this book was a very different approach. Some historic details were given, most of which can be found in his other books. The thing that was different about this one was the brief glimpse of Ambrose's personal life. We heard much of his relationships with other men. These are manly relationships, the kind we all need. It dealt with his two brothers and how they were close as well as some of his best friends through life. The most inspirational was the chapter that told of his relationship to his father. I wasn't deeply moved or anything, but I did appreciate the personal side of Ambrose. You will enjoy this written picture of proper male bonding.

                              Book Description

The secrets of top-class terrain modelling are revealed and demonstrated by Richard Windrow, one of the world's leading diorama modellers, in this new addition to the successful Masterclass series. Everything from medieval castles to the destruction wrought upon modern cities by war is covered in this wide-ranging and accessible approach. Explore the difficulties of creating an effective desert environment from the sandstone of Arizona to the wastelands of North Africa. Discover the delicate handiwork needed to create the barbed wire death traps of No-Man's Land and the frozen wilderness of Russia in winter.

This variety of seasons, environments and historical periods are detailed in over 200 full color step-by-step photographs so that a range of modeller's "how to" questions are easily answered. Accompanying the photographs is an invaluable guide to the materials and techniques needed to create top quality terrain, providing the essential reference volume for the military and non-military modeller alike.

3 out of 5 stars Terrain modeling information.......2007-09-27

The author does a wonderful job demonstrating techniques and products. The list of products used is very helpful, but somewhat limited, in that a major portion of what the author uses is available only in the UK. When trying some of the stores that he recommended,I was not able to find either the product or the company that originally created the product. This can be very frustrating when you are trying to come up with just the right product to create the effect that you want on your diorama. Other than that the directions were clear and concise and amply illustrated.

As the regional models required to understand and control the generation, distribution and deposition of air pollutants become more precise, the need to understand the detailed effects of hilly and mountainous terrain becomes more acute. The Alpine regions and the mountainous Mediterranean coasts have large effets on the way the pollutant burden is spread in their areas. Similarly an understanding of the effects of chemical and physical processes controlling pollutant deposition and the emission of biogenic compounds is essential to the correct modelling of the coastal regions which surround so much of Europe.
The results from two projects on these problems are presented in this volume: one involved a series of field campaigns in the Alps and in the Rhine valley, the other involves ships and platforms in the North Sea and also in the Mediterranean.

"Terrain modelling in surveying and civil engineering" does not contain imformation on modelling theory. Its main emphasis is describing digital computer methods (which may be outdated) available to the surveyor and/or civil engineer. If you are looking for instruction on the subject of terrain modeling than this book should be avoided.

                                    Description:
Tectonic faults are often associated with characteristic geomorphological features such as linear valleys, ridgelines and slope breaks that can be identified as lineaments in remotely sensed images or digital terrain models. Lineaments of tectonic origin are often characterised by periodicity and characteristic spatial pattern. Unlike traditional methods of autocorrelation, variogram, lineament density and Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis is capable of capturing and describing both periodicity and spatial pattern of lineaments. In this paper, a case study is shown for the application of wavelet analysis to morphotectonic lineament investigation. Results of wavelet analysis are compared to traditional methods. Although this study involves DEM-derived morphological lineaments, the presented wavelet analysis can be also used for lineaments derived from remotely sensed images. These results hold for this case study and provide a good assessment of the relative abilities of wavelet analysis, but it remains to be seen how effective it is for other data sources, areas and geological terrain.

                                      Description:
A procedure for the consistent application of digital terrain analysis methods to identify tectonic phenomena from geomorphology is developed and presented through two case studies. Based on the study of landforms related to faults, geomorphological characteristics are translated into mathematical and numerical algorithms. Topographic features represented by digital elevation models of the test areas were extracted, described and interpreted in terms of structural geology and geomorphology. Digital terrain modelling was carried out by means of the combined use of: (1) numerical differential geometry methods, (2) digital drainage network analysis, (3) digital geomorphometry, (4) digital image processing, (5) lineament extraction and analysis, (6) spatial and statistical analysis and (7) digital elevation model-specific digital methods, such as shaded relief models, digital cross-sections and 3D surface modelling. A sequential modelling scheme was developed and implemented to analyse two selected study sites, in Hungary and NW Greece on local and regional scales. Structural information from other sources, such as geological and geophysical maps, remotely sensed images and field observations were analysed with geographic information system techniques. Digital terrain analysis methods applied in the proposed way in this study could extract morphotectonic features from DEMs along known faults and they contributed to the tectonic interpretation of the study areas. e study areas.

                                        Description:
In this study we present an application of a sensitivity analysis to identify a set of important factors that are allowed to be calibrated in the grid setup of a prognostic meteorological model for laboratory-based simulations. The use of a calibrated grid is of paramount importance for repeated procedures by leaving unnecessary information unprocessed and inevitably reducing run times. Identification and evaluation of sensitivity, importance and uncertainty elements is attempted by the design of a 'good practice experiment' for site-specific calibration. The factors of varied grid size and resolution, based on a one-factor-at-a-time approach, are used for the determination of local sensitivity in the area of interest. A total of five simulations was performed for a grid configuration study that aimed to calibrate The Air Pollution Model.

This contribution analyses the influence of three different surface/PBL schemes from the MM5 mesoscale meteorological model on the predicted photochemical pollutant concentrations using high-resolution EMICAT2000 emission model and Models-3/CMAQ chemical transport model. The Gayno-Seaman (GS), the Medium Range Forecast (MRF), and the Pleim-Chang (PC) PBL schemes are considered. The simulations focus on a complex coastal urban area (Barcelona Geographical Area) located in the Western Mediterranean for a typical summertime situation characterised by the absence of large-scale forcing. The particularities of the area require high spatial (1km) resolution. Air quality, meteorological and lidar data are used for the evaluation of the results. PBL height inputs have been considered as diagnosed by MM5 and re-diagnosed by the MCIP meteorological pre-processor of Models-3/CMAQ. Several variables playing an essential role in the concentrations of air pollutants, such as PBL height, temperature, and wind speed and direction, are analysed. Important differences are observed in GS scheme depending on the method used in the PBL height estimation. MRF and PC present similar results. Modelled daily maximum pollutants' concentrations vary in magnitude and location in function of the PBL scheme. GS-MM5 scenario presents the lowest PBL heights, the highest surface temperatures and the weakest winds during daytime, which provokes an enhanced O"3 formation. The higher concentrations of NO"x in the GS-MM5 scheme (which are caused mainly by the lower PBL height) provokes a higher depletion of O"3, which yields to the lower concentrations of this pollutant during nighttime in Barcelona downtown. For regulatory purposes, the model tends to underestimate the photochemical formation in the area of study due to an underestimation of VOCs emissions in an VOC-limited area as Barcelona. The lower PBL height shown by GS taken from MM5, as well as the increase in the temperature and the weaker winds over coastal areas (that allow the accumulation of photochemical pollutants) promotes the O"3 concentration and improves the statistical scores of GS-MM5 scenario.
