5 out of 5 stars A great memoir of the War Between the States!.......2004-01-08

Can hardly believe that no one has reviewed this book. This is
an excellent volume of personal recollections of service with the Army of Northern Virginia. The account of the Gettysburg campaign alone is worth the price of the book, especially the part about "Extra Billy" Smith's conquest of York, PA, and Major General Jubal Early's reaction to it. Buy and read this book!

      Book Description

With a mixture of tenderness, irony, melancholy, and a sense of humor, this Spanish philosopher tells the story of what he has done with his life, or better yet, what life has done with him. This book includes his childhood in San Sebastian, the happiest stage of his life; the memories of his adolescence, up until the death of Franco; and his political commitments of today. In this unique work, Savater reflects upon the journey of his life, conscious that one cannot reveal it all.

        Book Description

The American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH) is the oldest medical organization in the United States, founded three years before the American Medical Association. The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for Parents is the first AIH publication that offers another option for parents who are reluctant to participate in the widespread extreme measures of conventional medicine such as stimulants, antidepressants, and overuse of antibiotics. Step-by-step Edward Shalts, a medical doctor who practices homeopathic medicine, explains what homeopathy is and how it works. He presents a user-friendly overview of acute and chronic issues and shows how parents can deal with them, either on their own for some problems, or in many cases, with a qualified practitioner. This important resource explains the principles of homeopathy, the nature of remedies, and the appropriate time to use homeopathy.

        3 out of 5 stars not much of a self-help book.......2007-09-16

I'm glad I got this from the library before buying it. This has very little self-help in it. There are other books with more complete and more easily searched self-help sections.
This book might be good if you need to be convinced about the usefulness and benefits of homeopathy for your family, but I'm past that point and got very annoyed at being cautioned on about every other page that I need to work with a trained homeopath and could not possibly do or comprehend more than simple acute care by myself. It was written on behalf of the American Institute of Homeopathy so maybe that explains something. He also cautions ominously against polypharmacy, but never gave any reason or proof why this should be so bad.

        5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GUIDE.......2007-07-30

I have been using homeopathic remedies for some time, but this book opens up my understanding more on why, how much, what, and when. I have had phenomenal success using homeopathic remedies and would advise everyone interested in keeping dangerous drugs out of their bodies or those of their family's should at least read up on the subject, and this is one of the books to start with!

I am always surprised when people say to me "that stuff is quackery, or you've been conned", yet they will go to their doctor and get a drug with deadly side-effects and take it! If only they knew that not all the prescriptions doctors give out have been tested - which is why a doctor will say to them "we'll try this one and if it doesn't work, we'll try something else!" And because it is a doctor who says it, people are gullible to believe that drug will not hurt them!

Get the book, READ IT, and then ask yourself is it worth a try? You can't hurt yourself with it, and it won't cost a fortune to buy it!

1 out of 5 stars The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for partents........2007-01-09

I was looking (still haven't found) a book about homeopathic remedies, strengths and dosages. I didn't find it in this book, most of the book explained how it is better to live healthy than to take medicines.

        5 out of 5 stars I sell homeopathic products.......2006-04-30

I recently opened a 'healing products' store in an Interstate Super Flea Market mall, and retail a branded homeopathic line of remedies. Not being a doctor, but making referrals to homeopathic professionals, this book was exactly what I needed to relate homeopathic remedies to visitors to my new store and provide them with simple comprehensive understandable information useful for adults and children, alike.

I believe the book to be a good bridge between patient and professional, alike, to understand specifics and the proper use of these wonderful medications anytime one is visiting or calling a professional practitioner.

I highly recomend it to any lay person, like myself, who is interested in learning about homeopathics with or without the help of a homepathics professional. For anyone with serious illiness, especially chronic sufferers of pain and acute disease, I highly recommend that one should always work with a trusted professional, and I strongly recommend browsing this book prior to selecting a homeopathic professional, and keeping it handy throughout any conversations and use of prescribed remedies.

After reading the book and answering a few customer questions today, I am so pleased that I am ordering additional copies from Amazon.com to make the book immediately available to my own customers who request it.

5 out of 5 stars Alternatives for parents seeking answers.......2006-01-03

Dr. Shalts has produced an impressive book, one that could help many families who are seeking alternatives to medication for their child's unique set of issues. This is an enormously helpful, easy to read, engaging book on homeopathy for kids, explaining what homeopathy is and helping parents to find the treatment that is right for their child.

I highly recommend this to any parent of a child who is seeking answers for problematic behaviors and physical conditions, and wants to explore homeopathy.

2 out of 5 stars Decent book, but you can do better.......2007-03-21

When I first received the Great Tiki Drink Book as a present, I was quite happy. The recipes were good and had a lot of variety. But as I used it I noticed the lack of attention to detail. Trying to follow along with a recipe is an exercise in frustration because the book isn't spiral bound so it won't lie flat and stay open to a particular page; the appendix make some attempt at helping you find certain ingredients, but doesn't do a very good job. I've since acquired several more Tiki Drink books and would recommend the Beachbum Berry books as superior to this one. The recipes are better researched and the form factor is much more conducive to trying out a new recipe while standing at the bar with liquor bottles in your hand.

        5 out of 5 stars Tiki Time.......2004-06-04

The Great Tiki Drink Book is an excellent introduction into the drinks that were spawned from the tiki culture. The book starts off with an introduction to the tiki culture tracing its roots from Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic in the late 1930's to the present day tiki revival. The drink recipes are easy to follow and there are handy footnotes on where to find certain unusual ingredients that are part of the recipes. The book also contains tiki inspired food recipes that will help you create your very own tiki party.

        5 out of 5 stars Cocktail dream!.......2004-02-27

Great little book to have around. Not only does it have great recipes, but tips and trivia to go along with them. The appetizer section is to die for and you have resources for everything. Great for novice on up. This is one I will keep close at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Make mine a double, please........2002-07-10

You can be the first in YOUR neighborhood to jump on the Tiki revival with this mouthwatering slim-jim book packed with delicious sounding (and looking) Tiki drinks and nibbly go-withs. The beauty of the recipes is that they are somewhat adapted to modern taste-- not too sweet and using ingredients (like lemongrass) that our Tiki forbears probably never heard of. There are recipes for quick sour mixes, an easy and inteteresting rum glossary, tiki lore (answers just what IS tiki anyways?), great graphics and photos. Also an excellent source list for All Things Tiki. The book is fun without being condescending. Well worth the affordable ticket.

1 out of 5 stars Misleading and mean.......2001-11-24

I recieved this book as a gift. I read it and immediately threw it out. It is a horribly misleading book that should not be sold at all. It states that rats will not come when called by name or that will not bond to you. Tell this to my 12 rats that do exactly that. The author knows NOTHING about rat temperament. Other statements about what you can teach your rats are just plain wrong. The trifling details that are given about rat care are not enough to fill a thimble. Any current ir prospective owner should get Debbie Ducommun's books, Rat health Care, and Rats for Today's Pet Owner (this is available here). Debbie is the "rat lady" and her books should be considered rat owners bibles.
Just because a book is written by a vet does not mean it should be taken at face value. I give this book no stars because it deserves none. (no stars was not a valid choice, so I am telling you)

        2 out of 5 stars misinformation.......2001-11-08

This book said that multiple rats would fight and did not recommend getting more than one. I thought that this was a really incorrect recommendation, rats are social animals. Unless a person can spend alot of time with a rat I feel that it is cruel to only have one and there are alot of rat lovers that agree with me. I have 5 male rats at one point, they got along really well. At one point some of them did start to fight, I tried natural remedies-which can definately work in some cases-but they continued to fight so I had the trouble makers nuetured and then everyone got along great! If you have rats that fight check out rat web pages for solutions, alittle bit of bickering is to be expected.

        3 out of 5 stars It's a good starter book........2000-10-11

When I first got my very first rat, this book was really helpful and informative. Then, I got a second female rat that happened to be pregnant and I found that the book didn't have as much information in it as I would have liked to have known. I would reccommend this to anyone who is just starting out with their first rat. But, if you are planning on continuing breeding or keeping rats as pets, I suggest getting something more detailed.

3 out of 5 stars Good... but not the best........1999-05-27

I've had this book for a while, and while it is helpful, it is not the best book out there on rats as pets. It's not a bad price, though, and I have never heard anyone say that anything in it is flat-out wrong, so it may not be a bad supplement to the rat library. I wouldn't use it as my sole source of information.

5 out of 5 stars A blend of technique and journal..........2006-07-24

This book is a blend of personal insights and techniques that shows not just what it takes to be a master carpenter, but the path this particular one took to get there. The book reads like a cross between tips and tricks of the trade and a diary.

4 out of 5 stars IF YOU LIKE NORM...........2006-02-17

I originally bought this book just because Norm Abrams wrote it and I am a big fan of THIS OLD HOUSE and THE NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP.But, it is an engaging read and one I find myself going..."ahhhhhhhhhh" or "ahhhhhhhh, hahhhhhhhhhh!" to. Add it to your "toolbox." It will help you be better at whatever you do.

Makes a great gift too to recognize members of your workgroup, fellow fans of Norm, and those you would like to gently influence.

        4 out of 5 stars A Peek Inside Norm's Toolbox.......2006-02-14

Norm Abram is the much admired and even beloved host of the PBS show New Yankee Workshop and a longtime fixture on This Old House. In Measure Twice, Cut Once, we get a peek inside Norm's extensive toolbox, as Norm simply talks tools -- his likes, his dislikes, and, of course, more than a few helpful tips.

Norm has a reputation for loving power tools but in Measure Twice, Cut Once he focuses on his favorite hand tools. His knowledge is impressive as he covers a wide spectrum of hand tools -- folding rules, tape measures, chalk boxes, squares, levels, plumb bobs, saws, planes, knives, screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, hammers, crowbars and chisels. Norm's favorite tool is the right tool, be it a power tool or a hand tool -- whatever is best for the job at hand.

I read somewhere that Norm wrote most of this book by dictating it into a recorder as he drove to and from various job sites. It shows -- the book is loose and conversational and Norm even gets a little personal. He talks a great deal about his father, who died shortly after this book was finished. The connection between Norm and his father through carpentry is heartfelt and it's nice to see this personal side of Norm.

Norm knows that carpenters are taught some skills and that they learn other skills through personal experience, but he believes that all of it should be passed on to others, just as he learned from his father. The craft and skill of carpentry naturally passes from one generation to the next and so on. That's what Norm tries to do through his TV shows and through books like Measure Twice, Cut Once. He isn't trying to impress you or overwhelm you. He just wants you to put this knowledge to work.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe the book for a complete novice........2006-02-08

When this book was billed as a distillation of a master carpenter's years of experience, I eagerly bought it, took it home and began reading. I should have stayed in the bookstore and read a few pages. I'm still waiting for the master craftsman insights. Wow, I didn't know a keyhole saw was for cutting small holes or a level might break when it is dropped off the top of a house. And I'm not sure why I should be interested in a picture of Norm when he was a toddler. Thanks, Norm. I'm glad I bought this used. No wonder this $20 book sells used for $3. OK, if you have NEVER picked up a saw before, this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Buy once, return once.......2005-08-04

That this selection sells for $1.25 is a surprise. The price appears to be inflated. This book falls flat in the prediction that "Norm distills a lifetime of experience into seventy short, simple lessons". Such as? Sharpening a pencil? We learn how to sharpen a carpenter's pencil...sort of. The reader sits white knuckled as we learn that a stainless steel handsaw was stolen from Norm's tool box. We learn that a level breaks when dropped from 1-1/2 stories. Who would have thought? Norm tells us that the combination square's uses could fill several pages of this 5" x 7" book. We learn of three uses and three of the most obvious. Cute? Warm and fuzzy? Ok. However, if one is looking forward to learning the secrets of 30+ years he ought to look elsewhere. The "Lessons from a Master Carpenter" are few indeed. Abram apparently could not share the secrets. Come now, no doubt that Abram is a skilled builder. Without a doubt he ought to avoid writing books and resume building. Pass on this one unless found at twenty-five cents.

5 out of 5 stars A Piece of Sanity for Every New (or not so new) Mom.......2007-10-10

I read this book when my first child was a month old. It was exactly what I needed. I felt as if I had a sympathetic voice for everything I was experiencing emotionally. This book doesn't address the concerns found in most baby books such as how to dress and bathe your baby. Instead, it focuses on the changes you are experiencing as a new mother. It made me feel a little more sane while I was experiencing the crazy fogginess of sleep deprivation.

The best part about this book was that it was written in a question and answer format. I could easily pick it up where I left off as I was frequently interrupted by the demands of my newborn son. I was also able to tell when I didn't need the information on a certain subject and could skip right over it to the next question. I was able to digest the information at my own pace.

This book is a lifesaver for new mothers and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has recently had a child or is about to have one. It gave me hope when it seemed like my life was overwhelming and it reminded me that one day I will have a full night of sleep again!

                5 out of 5 stars What a treasure!.......2007-06-26

I received this book as a gift, and now my best friend is pregnant so I'm buying her a copy. Every new mom needs this book! Anything and everything that comes up for new moms is addressed - from the baby's health and development to changes in your body and why you're fighting so much with your partner. Love the question & answer format, which makes for easy reading in quick "bites." I pick up this book over and over again and always find something new and inspiring. Highly recommended!

Motherhood Without Guilt: Being the Best Mother You Can Be and Feeling Great About It

5 out of 5 stars Essential book for new mothers.......2005-08-27

As a family therapist and teacher, I thought I was quite prepared to become a mother. In reality, I was overwhelmed by the abrupt changes in my life after having a baby. This book addressed my concerns in a caring, supportive and nonjudgmental way. It discussed issues that I had difficulty verbalizing, and it normalized my early experiences of motherhood. This is my top pick for every new mother - it is my staple gift at every baby shower!

5 out of 5 stars Where Have You Been?.......2003-09-15

I cannot believe I had to endure the pregnancies and births of four children before someone wrote this book! The New Mom's Companion: Care for Yourself While You Care for Your Newborn is an amazing book that speaks directly to a new mom, and about practically ALL of the questions and dilemmas that a new mom has to endure! Wait, it really speaks to ANY mom! I have to admit that I quickly studied the "in-law" questions, to make sure I wasn't off my rocker for some of the concerns I had (and still have) about my ability to be a good mom, despite what the other side of our family thinks! The authors of The New Mom's Companion: Care for Yourself While You Care for Your Newborn have taken great care to respond to the many questions highlighted in this book, putting a positive light on some very emotional and misunderstood feelings of a new mom. We are pampered and doted on while we are pregnant, yet the minute the baby arrives, moms seem to lose their identity and their value. The New Mom's Companion: Care for Yourself While You Care for Your Newborn brings self-worth back to the woman, who just happens to be a mom!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book for me!.......2003-08-14

I have read many books about how to care for your newborn, but this book was about how to take care of me, after childbirth. Every question I had and wondered if I was being selfish, greedy, overly protective or just depressed was included in this book. It gave examples that I related to. I am very grateful to know that I am not alone with my emotions and experiences of being a new mom!

                  Book Description

At first glance, a casual observer might assume that Norman Lundin's recent paintings are about things. That would be a mistake. Instead, silence and space form a void that is shaped and manipulated by the things that displace it and defined by the light and atmosphere captured in its gravitational field. This void is the true subject of Lundin's paintings. Lundin's fascination with still life, landscape, and compositional integrity reaches its peak in a series of paintings depicting objects arranged along a shelf, in front of mullioned windows that allow glimpses of a landscape beyond. This volume includes an interview with the artist and illustrates works ranging from 1973 to 2006.
