Preparing for Service.......2001-01-08

John Barnes may have left the classroom but he still is teaching Americans about their history. From the industrial town of Utica, NY to the mire of France and on to Germany, his saga will set straight young and old alike who believe that war is glamorous. His insights into his Irish Catholic childhood during the Depression make this a poignant tale, helping us realize how much was lost in order to gain victory. He also makes one confront the deep loss in so many small American towns such as Bedford, VA, where the flower of manhood simply vanished into the military cemeteries of France. I'm proud to have known him thirty years ago. I wish he'd included more detail on his inner faith formation as a result of war, but his service to comrades, school and community since war's end speak eloquently on his behalf. One suspects he was saved so many times during that war in order to assist so many since 1945.

This short book (152 pages) is very enjoyable and enlightening reading. Having read several other books on WWII in the European theater, this book is very refreshing. While it does not have the scope of Stephen Ambrose's "Citizen Soldiers" or "D-Day", it tells of an average, reluctant soldiers involvement in many of the same operations as those covered by Mr. Ambrose.

The primary focus of the book is the author's involvement in WWII. But childhood memories by the author are covered in chronological order and particularly focus on memories of his peers and their thoughts on the impending World War. In their innocent teenage years, personal involvement in this war seemed to be surreal.

While Mr. Barnes is not involved in any singular heroic action, this is, I think, one of the more subtle aspects to this book. It shows that WWII was a team effort, involving the heroes as well as the average Joe.

A memorable aspect of this book to me is how Mr. Barnes expresses his fear of combat. As someone who luckily has never had to face combat, thanks in large part to John Barnes and his generation, I often wondered how I would react in similar circumstances. I believe Barnes reaction is similar to that of most anyone.

Compulsory reading for those seriously interested in Rumi........2001-10-29

There has been a glut of books on Rumi in the past few years, many of them of dubious authenticity or quality; this assessment applies especially to the "free" translations of his poetry which have been such a big hit in the West! I think those poetical translations are not doing justice to the message of Rumi since they are so far removed from many of the original Persian poems.

This book then is a welcome change. It is quite an old book but its republishing is an important event in the world of Rumi studies, in my opinion.

For a start this book, though perfectly accessible to the lay person, is primarily a scholarly endeavour and as such much more concerned about relaying the events of Rumi's life and his message as accurately as possible than in selling copies!

It is unique of all the books I have read on Rumi to date in that it tries to look, in depth, at his early life and how that affected him later when he met Shams Tabrizi and was moved by Divine Love to compose ecstatic poetry.

Thus we have a detailed chapter on the political conditions of the area (Afghanistan) in which he lived; then we have an exposition about his father (who himself was a very famous Muslim scholar and jurisprudent as well as a Sufi) who, as this book shows, had a major influence on Rumi's development and later ideas. We also then are introduced to the other people who influenced Rumi in one way or another, his teachers and his family and friends.

The sections on Rumi's life are detailed too: his life is divided into three sections: his birth, childhood, migration to Konya and early training as an Islamic scholar under his father and other famous teachers; his period following his father's demise as a prominent scholar, and Sufi teacher himself (he was an heir to his father's position); and then the period of his meeting with Shams and afterwards for the remainder of his life. This latter period is also further sub-divided based on his various works and mystical states as evidenced by his poetical output. Most other works on Rumi tend just to concentrate on this last period of his life.

After this the major poetical works of Rumi are discussed in, more or less, chronological order of writing. Thus the Divan-e-Shams-e-Tabrizi, his great collection of ecstatic lyrical poems in praise of Shams is dealt with first followed then by an explanation of his magnus opus, the Masnavi. Then the author discusses Rumi's overall message. The final section looks at sections of the Masnavi which RE Nicholson, in his great translation of the Masnavi, decided to translate into Latin as he believed them (erronously) to be of a pornographic nature. In fact, when one reads the English translations here, one sees that Rumi simply uses examples of human sexual behaviour to underline an important teaching point of Sufism.

For those who are interested in Rumi's message and life in earnest, and not in the suspicious "New-Age" fad which the spurious translations of his works seem to have started (and which he, being a pious Muslim, would no doubt be horrified by!), this book is a must.

Dr. Iqbal needs to be congratulated for trying to bring Rumi's message across as it is!

This book is everything the positive reviews say and more. I believe it was greatly enhanced by the fact that the author was himself a member of the Unification Church for an extended period, as he contributes a good deal from his own experiences. He does a great job explaining how cults use psychological manipulation to draw in members, and how exit counselors work to "unfreeze" their minds so they can find their own way out of the group's lies. I also greatly appreciated the fact that he focused his criticsms on those who abuse religon for their own ends and did not try to caricature all religions as cultic. This book is a tremendous resource for anyone interested in this subject and gets my highest recommendation.

I found the book very informative and easy to understand. I was able to relate to what Steve was talking about having been raised in a mind control cult myself. I would recommend the book to those who are working on helping someone escape this subtle nightmare to become alive again. I am persuing the same mission field as Steve and he inspired me to stay with it.

Excellent book on cults and mind control.......2005-09-01

Anyone interested in this book should go to (...) "Constructing Social Reality". The program is hosted by Phillip Zimbardo, the well know social psychologist from Stanford University and long-time president of the American Psychological Association, and features footage of Steven Hassan talking briefly about his views on cults and mind control. It should give one a good sense of the tone, intelligence and validity of Hassan's writing.

When I learned that L. Ron Hubbard had officially "erased" his 2nd wife, Sara, and began describing her as the Russian communist spy Sara Komkosadamanov, and then I saw the huge stack of abandoned dianetics books at a used book store, I knew something was seriously wrong. Since then I've been reading and reading. Now I've just finished a really nice and concise over-view of whole messy subject: 'Combatting Cult Mind Control' by Steven Hassan. If you're tempted to wander into the world of cults, read this book first.

This book is one of those books that one can read and relate their experiece - whether or not you were in one of the listed cults Hassan describes. How freeing to realize that the same tactics used by those Hassan listed are the same tactics the cults I was involved with used. There is nothing new under the sun, that's for certain.

With tremendous sincerity and helpfulness, Hassan lists out the destructive portions of the cults while at the same time not minimizing those of us who have been in a cult. ANYONE could be recruited or involved. I admire his compassion for all involved as well as a direct no-nonsense approach to those who premediate cult practises to harm and abuse others.

I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking validation regarding the possibility of being in a cult and to those who may work with those coming out of an abusive church/religious experience!

Wonderful Pictures.......2007-09-13

I got this book mainly because I liked "Expressions" (by the same authors) very much.

The photos and advice given by Ms. Tyler Jones and Ms. Smylie is very useful for the new photographer and provides some fresh ideas for a photographer who has more experience. Their photos are engaging and instructive. I liked the first half of the book (which is geared more to the nuts and bolts of photography) better than the second half of the book (which demonstrates ways of displaying photos.)

It is true that this book is directed towards film photography, but good advice about how to take excellent photos is the same for digital as it is for film cameras. This book gives good, clear instruction on how to take compelling people photos.

I would have given it 4 stars, except the book binding fell apart the second time I read it through, which made it difficult to read and spoiled my enjoyment.

because it's a little outdated with all the digital stuff out now...BUT it's awesome for fun photo challenges and how to set up a photo shoot! Great book to include in your photography library.

This book is definitely for the person who knows about aperture, exposure, etc. NOT for the BEGINNER. The book is made very well. Too pricey for the contents, your really paying for the quality of the book. Not as much information as I had hoped for by reading the excerpts before purchasing. If you know about cameras and you don't mind paying more for what you are getting...go ahead and purchase. I would say I was more disappointed than upset.

This book has basic information such as part and functions of the various parts of different types of cameras. It also has in-depth information for experienced photographers such as lighting and conducting a photo shoot. Half of the book contains a variety of creative ways to use your photographs. These projects may be geared toward more experienced photographers but the beginner can alter them to be more simple and work their way up to more advanced techniques. My favorite part of the book is the way it's put together. It is organized nicely yet fun and the language is not too technical. The illustrations and design of the book demonstrates the author's knowledge and passion on photo arts. EXCELLENT BUY if you have a vested interest in photographing children!

I really like this book. The cover design really grabbed my attention.
Good clear advice on photography mainly for beginner photographers. The scrapbook projects in the second half of the book are definitely inspiring. Unfortunately no step by step guidelines which makes it a bit challenging to duplicate some of them at least for a novice scrapbooker (I've been doing it a couple of years and still found some of the projects complicated).
All in all the book layout itself is full of ideas and great photos to look at!

I have many Fibro books. This one has given me information that the others have not. Don't get me wrong when you've read one you basically have read them all, but this one has a few new items in it that the others do not.

Excellent balance between layman explanations and medical terminology.......2007-01-28

This is the first book I have purchased since my FMS diagnosis. It explains things very well, and covers a wide array of treatment options and loads of study information ranging from physical therapies, to medicines, and even to alternative treatment options such as herbal tinctures.
After reading this book, I was able to express to my family, especially my daughter, what I was going thru, how it felt, and identify my needs more accurately for a more engaged lifestyle. I realized I was not a lost cause, that the syndrome was not all in my head, and there are proactive measures I can take to improve my life.
Anyone who is serious about really wanting to understand the mechanics of the syndrome, co-existing and similar illnesses which are easier to explain to others, and have a need to understand the syndrome itself should read this book.
Finishing this book reassured me that there is hope if you are willing to accept pacing yourself with realistic goals to improve your life. Despite my excellent medical care, I previously felt more as if I had "whining female syndrome" rather than something real which can be and needs to be treated.
It does get technical in parts of the book, but was well within my ease of understanding all of the author's information, and left me with a feeling of hope and positive well being I have not experienced in years.

Concise Book Great for Patients & Family.......2006-05-24

I loved this book. As a FMS sufferer of 2 years now I'm still at times struggling to cope and understand and accept this illness. This book was great, it was written in such a clear consise manner that didn't talk down to me! This book is wonderful also for sharing with family and friends when they have questions. It doesn't overwhelm you with tons of overly detailed information. If you want that you can get "Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual" (2nd Edition) by Devin J. Starlanyl which is the bible on FMS. I love Devin's books too, but they can be quite mind boggling reading for a friend or relative who wants to know more about the illness without overexposure! *LOL*

As a former librarian and researcher by nature (I had to quit my beloved job due to the severity of FMS along with arthritis, migraines, PCOS, etc) I have read more than twenty some books on FMS/CFIDS, living with chronic illnesses, etc and this book along with Cladia Craig Marek's "Fibromyalgia the First Year" has become one of my two favorites! The writing is so easy to understand and I even found out new information that I hadn't come across before on medications, symptoms and new theories on what's behind the cause of FMS.

Do make this book part of your personal library on FMS. It is qutie definetly worth the cost!

I would NOT recommend this book to ANYONE.......2005-10-18

Fibromyalgia is a confusing syndrome as it is. I was looking for a guide for my family and what I got instead was a book that, contradicts everything my doctors and other reputable authors and experts on fibromyalgia have said or written. The author obviously hasnt done much research on the issue. Anyone that has done any research into fibromyalgia knows that we have TENDER points, not TRIGGER points, the author mentions several times TENDER points injections as a pain remedy. I could go on and on about this book but I wont. Instead I suggest you read "The Fibromyalgia Advocate" by Dr. Devin Starlanyl before you read this book. She is not only and author/M.D. but she lives with fibromyalgia herself, and writes from experience. I feel that if I were to give this book to my family, they would be even more confused about my syndrome than they were before, and probably less sympathetic/understanding.

I would give the book more stars if it was openly listed as an update of their earlier book, "Making Sense of Fibromyalgia." There is very little difference in the two books. On it's own, it's a good resource for understanding current thoughts on the causes for the symptoms, medical and complementary treatments, and ways to minimize its effect on your life.

Art History of the Highest Order!.......2000-07-29

This is a superbly written and researched account of Artemisia's Gentileschi's fascinating life and art. While not at all hostile to feminist interpretations of the painter, chiefly Mary Garrard's, Bissell is refreshingly skeptical and respectfully critical of many of their key points. Bissell is a more traditional art historian than I myself prefer, but one can't find better art history than this. Despite the high price, I wholeheardtedly recommend this wonderful book to anyone interested in Artemisia Gentileschi's paintings and as a feminsit icon.

Bissell's book is best read in tandem with Garrard's book........1999-10-14

I plan to use both the Bissell and the Garrard book on Artemisia Gentileschi in my Baroque Art History class this Spring. Since these authors often interpret both works and life events rather differently, students should find the comparison stimulating.

I saw the pre published text and met with the author. Here is a fully comprehensive, wonderfully detailed, and beautifully created book that clearly reflects an exacting 'lifetime labor of love' from Ward Bissell. I heartily recommend this book to all scholars, educators, students, collectors, dealers and appreciators of art in general and Artemisia in particular. Bissell has given us the definitive word on Artemesia Gentileschi with his work.
