Book Description

He was found dead on the battlefield at Gettysburg, an unknown soldier with nothing to identify him but an ambrotype of his three children, clutched in his fingers. With the photograph as the single, sad clue to his identity, a publicity campaign to locate his family swept the North. Within a month, the bereaved widow and children were located in Portville, New York, and the devoted father was revealed to be Sergeant Amos Humiston of the 154th New York Volunteers. Using many previously untapped sources, this book tells the tale of 19th-century war, sentiment, and popular culture in greater detail than ever before. The Humiston story touched deep emotions in Civil War America, and inspired a flood of heartfelt prose, poetry, and song. Amid a vast outpouring of public sympathy, a charitable drive evolved to assist the bereft family. At the end of the war, the crusade was expanded to establish a home at Gettysburg for orphans of deceased soldiers. The first residents of the institution were Amos Humiston's widow Philinda and her three children: Franklin, Alice, and Frederick. In this extensive account, a full portrait emerges of Amos Humiston, the loving husband and father destined to be remembered for his death tableau, and his family, the widow and orphans who struggled for the rest of their lives with celebrity born of tragedy.

5 out of 5 stars The Civil War and the Common Man.......2001-03-10

So much of history focuses on the leaders, generals, and other famous persons of the era. Gettysburg's Unknown Soldier is interesting because it focuses on a common man, Amos Humiston, and his family. He is Gettysburg's unknown soldier because he was found dead holding a picture of his three children. There is nothing else to indicate his identity. The picture is used to identify Amos and locate his widow and children. Amos' attention to his children's picture during his last moments makes him and his family celebrities. While Gettysburg is Amos' defining moment in history, the author tells us the full story. Amos' years on a whaling ship were an adventure, but also a lot of hard work. If whaling was tough, it was nothing compared to the War. We follow Amos and his New York regiment as he marches and marches and marches and fights. After Amos' death at Gettysburg, the story continues with his widow and children and how his death changes their lives. If you like history and want the perspective of the common man, I recommend Gettysburg's Unknown Soldier.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful Civil War human- interest story.......1999-08-15

It was a time in history when folks back home held romantic images of gallant heroes for "The Cause". It is no wonder this powerful human interest story snowballed into a nation wide hunt for the children who's loving and courageous father died fighting to reclaim freedom of liberty for his country.

Mark Dunkelman vividly paints a splendid picture of Amos Humiston and his family, taking us through a journey of their trails and tribulations. Mark Dunkelman's painstaking research comes togther with a marvelous, moving, and timeless human-interest story.

                Book Description

For nearly thirty years, Katsuyo Kobayashi has been showing people how to make good food with a minimum of fuss. She's Japan's most trusted and popular television cooking personality, and the best-selling author of 140 books.

In The Quick and Easy Japanese Cookbook, she presents foolproof recipes that anyone can make. All the ingredients are readily available outside Japan, and the cooking methods are kept simple and straightforward.

A large full-color photograph of each completed dish is shown opposite the recipe, for easy reference. Small photos of the cooking process, also in color, are in the right-hand margin, with notes from Kobayashi about points to remember or substitutions that can be made for ingredients that may be
less familiar. Calories and preparation time are noted for each dish.

This is real Japanese family-style food-the kind that you won't find in restaurants but that people are really eating every day, at home. Japanese cooking today is made rich in variety by Asian and European influences, and this book reflects that diversity. Many of the great traditional recipes of
Japan are here, such as Japanese Pan-Fried Chicken and Tofu with Sweet Miso Sauce, but so are recipes that came to Japan from China and were adapted to Japanese tastes, like Gyoza Pot Stickers, Steamed Shumai Dumplings, and Banbanji Chilled Sesame Chicken. There's Japanese-style curry, and the
popular "Omrice"--delicious flavored rice wrapped inside a thin omelette. There are even Japanese-style hamburgers, flavored with soy sauce and sake.

Now, you can enjoy Japanese home cooking without ever leaving home.

2 out of 5 stars quick and easy but not so tasty.......2003-05-13

After having lived in Japan for 3 years I was very interested in preparing home-cooked Japanese meals and received this book as a gift. The recipes are easy to measure out and prepare, but I have not been satisfied with the outcome of any of the dishes. They do not taste the way I have had the pleasure of eating them at homes or restaurants in Japan. If you would like to prepare authentic Japanese meals I would not recommend this book.

                3 out of 5 stars needs updating.......2003-01-01

I was excited to buy this book after seeing the author beat an Iron Chef on FoodTV. I love to cook Japanese dishes, and her recipes cut my prep time in half, and they still taste as good as the fancier version. However, I wish the book offered more recipes, and more variety. I feel it barely scratched the surface of Japanese cuisine. Still, the recipes offered here are delicious. It's just a matter of whether you feel it is worth spending the money on so few recipes.

                4 out of 5 stars A staple Japanese cookbook.......2000-11-17

Being cable deprived, I've seen the Iron Chef only once. Each episode's backbitingly brutal commentary on the competing chefs' techniques, choice of ingredients and finished product positively enthralls! Naturally, I was enticed by the caption of the author's photograph. It says, "Katsuyo Kobayashi can make anybody into an IRON CHEF." Well, I doubt that, since she'd have to give me culinary creativity and an ironclad ego, while teaching me to prepare her Iron Chef-winning Japanese delicacies. The book, however, had enough simple, creative recipes, beautiful full-color glossy photographs and some of the best food preparation advice I've experienced.

Simply arranged into ingredient-themed sections, the book also has a section on the basic techniques of Japanese cooking (rice and stock making) and a glossary that you will want to take to the Asian market. Many of the ingredients will only be found there, but Kobayashi does give some Western equivalents, as well as the calories per serving. Time to prepare and cook helps, too, since most people have the impression that Asian cuisine is time intensive with all that chopping and dicing. Now I'm ready to tackle Clams steamed in sake, assorted tempura and steamed shumai dumplings with the best of them.

                5 out of 5 stars Very Worthwhile!.......2007-05-23

I bought this book in a bookshop here in Tokyo actually after reading through it, I worked in Japanese resturants both in Australia and Japan for about 4 years and after making a change in my line of work I wanted a reference book on some of the areas that I didn't get time to learn in full. I'd made Sushi professionally but wasn't doing it long enough to rotate through all of the different areas of prep

There are very good step by step picture (glossy photos) instructions for how to cut fish and prepare different types of fish plus there are some great novelty chirashi items for kids too.

The proof in the pudding for me though was the part on Shari (sushi rice), if that more fundumental part isn't good then it calls the quality of the whole book into question. It was certainly not lacking!

In the end, with the sushi rice in this book so good the fact that there are lots of imaginative recipes in here that you might get in a japanese home but never in a resturant on top of the standard stuff really makes this book worth while. All the fundamentals are here, plus a lot of fun stuff so you get to involve yourself to a level that suits you.

Great details on how to slice the parts of the fish and how to distinguish fish.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Designs and Colors!.......2004-03-24

I borrowed this book from a friend and was amazed by the wonderful designs and use of color. The authors used a very unique and original method of arranging the appliqued designs. The designs in this book are interesting new twists on traditional designs like the pomegranate and other floral designs. One of the things that I found most interesting was that the backgrounds of the designs are pieced with fabrics of similar hues, tones, and colors which helped to enrich the design and add interest. All of the designs are applique.

If you're looking for a book on applique that is different then a lot of other books out there then this is the one! This book has imagination, spunk, color, and originality. I cannot wait to buy my own copy!

As a new Mom of a baby approaching the "solid foods" age, I found this book to be very useful. Specifically, I really liked the concise approaches in the book (generally in table format) in the areas of 1) what foods to introduce and suggested general orders, 2) what foods to avoid until given points in time (egg whites, honey, etc..) and 3) how to change textures and introduce new foods as you approach an older baby/toddler.

I liked the fact that the approach was "open" in that I don't need to follow as rigid a timeline or schedule as I may have found from other sources. The tips and quotes from other Mom's also made the book unique - afterall, I consider other Mom's to be experts at this point!

As a new Mom, I don't have alot of time to read - so I found this easy to read and quick/concise....easier than pulling the information out of multiple other sources. The other great part is where the author gives links to various sources for further info such as baby recipes etc... I also look forward to utilizing the baby food calendar that the author supports through her website.

I would definately recommend this book to other new Moms that are trying to figure out the "solid food" thing!

Ann's style makes it easy to navigate the often-difficult world of baby and toddler dining. She covers these topics much better than other books.

Ann Douglas gives practical nutrition and allergy pieces of advice and more--sprinkling her books with fantastic and real stories of other moms. She doesn't preach and does allow for the discussion of alternative and natural choices, such as vegetarianism.

This book is a great companion to her other works, such as "Sleep Solutions".

                        4 out of 5 stars A classic well edited.......2006-05-16

Carla Kelly has done a fine job of editing this classic diary (first published by the Smithsonian in 1937) by highlighting Kurz's commentary on the Upper Missouri fur trade rather than his ruminations on art and thus making it feasible for a university press to issue an abridged version.

Kurz came to the Upper Missouri as romantic, a believer in the superiority of wilderness and the noble savage over Euro-American cities and civilization. While Kurz never specifically repudiates this view, the notion fades from the journal during his comparatively brief stay in what today is western North Dakota. Certainly there is no romanticism in Kurz's description of the fur traders and their Indian clients. No modern author could publish with a university press such a meticulous portrait of native Americans as lazy, violent, thievish, superstitious, and abusers of their women and children. That's one advantage of Kurz: you can avoid political correctness and read the account of someone who was there.

Kelly has also provided a useful index and 93 plates of Kurz's drawings. Kurz was a careful observer but not a great artist. In fact, if Kurz's Indian subjects--especially the women--were decked out in European clothing and hair styles, most of them would look right at home in his native Bern.

3 out of 5 stars Another piece to the mosaic.......2006-02-26

This journal, last published some years ago, has now been republished with the editor, Carla Kelly, removing, apparently, the philosophy and ramblings of Kurz. What remains is that portion of his journal that sticks to the subject of the Native Americans and the interaction of the "white man" in the 1800's. It is just one more piece to be added to the mosaic of the American West in the Upper Missouri. As diaries go, it's quite bland; it's simply a day-by-day description of life that has become fairly familiar through other books covering the same time and place, particularly Denig's "Five Tribes of the Upper Missouri." If you have read Denig's, Kurz's journal does not add much. However, Kurz does provide the romantic, softer, more idealistic views to counter the rougher, businesslike realities Denig had to face. The editor, Carla Kelly, would do well to publish a sequel to this journal in the form of a book with chapters of the various subjects Kurz spoke to, such as Indian women, his challenges with painting in the "wild West," the use of tobacco, Indian culture, etc. The only problem is that most of this is now well documented and she would have to be a very good writer to attract enough interest to make the effort worthwhile.

                        Book Description

As a clerk at Forts Berthold and the Union, Kurz, a noted Swiss artist, came to know well Indians, fur traders, and officers, and to understand the conditions of life in the region. He aimed "to give from my own observation a sincere portrayal of the American Indian in his romantic mode of life, a true representation of the larger fur-bearing animals, native forests and prairies." The volume, which includes 93 drawings, was originally published as Bulletin 115 of the Bureau of American Ethnology.

5 out of 5 stars The upper Missouri fur trade in historical context.......2005-07-25

This book is best read in conjunction with Larpenteur's FORTY YEARS A FUR TRADER,and Denig's FIVE INDIAN TRIBES OF THE UPPER MISSOURI,& ASSINABOINE to fully appreciate the cultural specifics & interrelationships between white traders,Indians,& Metis peoples in mid 19th century Dakota & Montana territories.Unlike present day politically correct/"sensitive" accounts, Kurz was a Swiss artist who lived with & sketched the Indian tribes of the upper & lower Missouri River from 1846-1852 as he found them. Dispite overall sympathy for the plight of their rapidly changing cultures,he depicts various tribes in brutally accurate & often unflattering accounts. History with all its bumps & warts is a phenomena sadly lacking today particularly with regard to Native American/White relations on the frontier. It's a humanizing account-acknowledging the endemic savage violence Indians were capable of directing toward each other. The lethal depridations of Smallpox,Influenza, & Cholera, on native populations are also described with disturbing directness. I would recommend this & the other titles mentioned for any reader who is interested in historical accuracy with often upsetting bluntness.

"Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood," writes Frank McCourt in his now-bestselling first memoir, Angela's Ashes. "Worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." Welcome, then, to the pinnacle of the miserable Irish Catholic childhood. Born in Brooklyn in 1930 to recent Irish immigrants Malachy and Angela McCourt, Frank grew up in Limerick after his parents returned to Ireland because of poor prospects in America. It turns out that prospects weren't so great back in the old country either--not with Malachy for a father. A chronically unemployed and nearly unemployable alcoholic, he appears to be the model on which many of our more insulting clichés about drunken Irish manhood are based. Mix in abject poverty and frequent death and illness, and you have all the makings of a truly difficult early life.

With 'Tis, the 1999 sequel to Angela's Ashes, McCourt picks up the story in October 1949, upon his arrival in America. Back on American soil, this awkward 19-year-old, with his "pimply face, sore eyes, and bad teeth," has little in common with the healthy, self-assured college students he sees on the subway and dreams of joining in the classroom. Initially, his American experience is as harrowing as his impoverished youth in Ireland, including two of the grimmest Christmases ever described in literature. McCourt views the U.S. through the same sharp eye and with the same dark humor that distinguished his first memoir: race prejudice, casual cruelty, and dead-end jobs weigh on his spirits as he searches for a way out. A glimpse of hope comes from the army, where he acquires some white-collar skills, and from New York University, which admits him without a high school diploma. But the journey toward his position teaching creative writing at Stuyvesant High School is neither quick nor easy. Fortunately, McCourt's openness in both books to every variety of human emotion and longing is exceptional; even the most damaged, difficult people he encounters are richly rendered individuals with whom the reader can't help but feel uncomfortable kinship. The magical prose, with its singing Irish cadences, brings grandeur and beauty to even the most sorrowful events of his life. --Wendy Smith

                                      5 out of 5 stars INCOMPLETE ENDING.......2003-12-25

A true story of Frank McCourt and his family. Even though here is a good side to the alcoholic father, he has too much pride to do what it takes to provide for his family, the mother is in a continual state of depression, and the children are starved, abused and neglected, but the book held my interest. The ending of the story was disappointing! What happened after Frank went to America? Did he bring his family over? It appears like Frank McCourt got fed up with writing the book and left the ending for speculation. In my opinion didn't deserve Pulitzer Prize, however I would recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Alcohol, Shame, and being Irish.......2000-08-08

Purchased Angela's Ashes in the late spring after hearing so much about the book and movie in the past 2 years and was completely blown away with Frank McCourt's life/work. Left hanging by the lack of ending in Angela's Ashes, it was quickly on to 'Tis and immediately thereafter, A Monk Swimming by Frank's brother Malachy McCourt.

Angela's Ashes is riveting for the sheer horror of escalating human tragedy. Just rented the movie and listened to my 11-year-old son repeat over and over, "just when you think it can't get any worse...it does". The book is far more graphic and not at all for the faint of heart. Malachy Sr., who loves his children desperately, is incredible in his alcoholism but even more incredible in his confused indifference to the suffering of his family. Angela is simultaneously pathetic and heroic possessing all the destructive sarcasm of her pretentiously proud mother and sister with an ability to do what is necessary to ensure her survival, along with 4 of her 7 children. Denial kills 3 children and a marriage, while the want of the most basic human contact turns a mother to incest. Miraculously, Frank survives and even thrives, driven by the things that his father did not possess...common sense, the gratification of a hard days work, sobriety, and I would argue literary genius.

`Tis is the ending that Angela's Ashes required and the reader learns that some of Frank's parent's demons have come home to roost. Despite his ability to succeed in America, Frank finds himself trapped in dysfunctional relationships and making several alcohol-induced blunders. Frank's observations/experiences about America/Education in the 50's, 60's, and into the 70's seem very fresh through his Irish eyes (2 holes in the snow they may be). With this, `Tis takes on a more historical/documentary feel rather than a personal memoir. My wife felt that Frank whined a bit in `Tis and I'd agree that some of the later chapters about his teaching experiences contain some unnecessary tangents. You are left with Frank McCourt's bittersweet feelings on the death of Angela in New York and finally Malachy Sr. in Belfast.

Both works are absolute page-turners with the shame, and alcohol, and Irishness fanning the flames of your humanity with horror, sadness, and delight. Hoping for a third book to bring us through Frank's eventual divorce and life in the 90's.

angela's ashes was a depressing book which was well written and spellbinding- a true gem. You constantly are flipping back to the dedication page to see if the children survived. The movie doesn't do it justice. Tis was a disappointment to me because i couldn't get an emotional attachment to frank's story until the final chapter.

McCourt's 'Angela's Ashes' leads the reader through the author's impoverished childhood in Ireland. It introduces his parents, brothers and baby sister and the dire circumstances they managed to survive. The story captivated me with the first paragraph. ''Tis' continues McCourt's adventures as he arrives in the United States as a young man. His stint in the Army, his quest for an education and his long search for love are all braided into a moving and unforgetable story. I recommend that you experience both books via audio tape. The author's charming Irish brogue only adds richness to an already overwhelming story.

The moment I finished this book I felt a bit lost. I really didn't want it to end. Wonderful book. I got 'Tis right after. Now i'm reading it.. too fast, again. I would like to thank Frank McCourt for sharing his life and this wonderful work. And to ask him to please keep writting.
