A good Thoreau biography for young adults.......2005-02-07
These days, odds are quite good that the typical high school student will be assigned to read some sort of biography and will have to report on its content. Publishers have responded in kind by releasing many biographical series targeted at the teenage audience. Though the quality of such books varies, the volumes always meet the teachers' 100-page minimum and offer at least a modicum of academic credibility.
Here's one of the better samplings covering the life of Henry David Thoreau. Miller begins by focusing on the Walden Pond experience, and then retreats to cover the usual background information. He's already snagged his readers and waits until page 20 to broach the concept of Transcendentalism, which is probably a good tactic. No sense in bringing it up earlier and running the risk of having the young readers stop turning pages because they don't understand the vocabulary. While this book is obviously not an in-depth literary or biographical analysis, the author doesn't dumb down the information and doesn't approach it in an overtly scholarly fashion. Facts and stories are told in an interesting and personal way, using a conversational style and often adding Thoreau's own words to illustrate his observations and philosophies.
Some devoted academics might scoff at Miller's interpretation of one of Thoreau's most-dissected statements: that of losing "a hound, a bay horse, and a turtle-dove." The contemporary take is that the tale is merely about life's losses. Here, Miller says the trio "represents the spiritual reality behind nature." What? Hmmm. That excerpt aside, the author is obviously a Thoreau fan and did not merely churn this book out to meet a publisher's criteria. His concluding statement is "If our planet is to survive to celebrate the bicentennial of his death in the year 2062, the world would do well to heed his vision." Indeed.
A sole criticism of this work is that Thoreau's statements are used without footnotes. While this technique makes for easier adolescent reading, it can be vexing to anyone wanting to locate the original source of those quotes. A three-page narrative bibliography is quite useful, as is the full index. School and public librarians would do well to make this title available to their patrons. It serves a population that's not quite ready for the standard full-bodied HDT biographies by Canby, Harding or Richardson.

As Hippocrates said, "Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food." Seems people didn't listen to him, because as the U.S. Surgeon General said more than 2,000 years after him, "Two-thirds of all deaths in 1997 in this country could be attributed to diet." They'd both likely advocate the information contained in Prescription for Dietary Wellness, a massive reference aimed at preventing and treating disease through diet. The Balchs, authors of the 3-million-plus bestseller Prescription for Nutritional Healing, which focuses mainly on supplements and herbs, have created another masterpiece. This book gives a solid education in nutrition basics, with references to the latest research. It also includes flavorful, antioxidant-packed recipes, and adds advice that has been proven effective for treating various ailments using specific foods and supplements. The book also includes:
- Charts with warning signs of disease and nutrient deficiency, along with guidelines to help start the healing process
- Charts that detail the nutrient needs of various organs, and which foods best supply the nutrients
- Lengthy chapters on specific categories of foods, such as beans, cruciferous vegetables, oils, and grains, explaining how best to cook them and the health benefits they confer
- More than 100 pages of quick, healthy, mostly low-fat recipes designed to pack the most nutritional punch for the calories
The Balchs add advice about live juice and herbal preparations and cleansing (i.e., fasting and enemas, including a specific six-day cleansing diet). While this guide can feel a bit overwhelming at times (there are so many nutrients to consider, so many veggies and whole grains to consume), it's certainly not too technical, even for folks who could use a copy of Nutrition for Dummies, and it certainly succeeds in its mission of helping foster better dietary habits for good health.
Book Description
Like its companion books--the number-one bestselling Prescription for Nutritional Healing and the newer Prescription for Herbal Healing--Prescription for Dietary Wellness offers authoritative information that is research-based and clearly written, making it easy for the reader to quickly find the subjects in which he or she is interested and to incorporate the dietary recommendations into his or her daily life.
Updates in this second edition include:
phytochemicals and antioxidants
foods that boost immunity
how to choose the most nutritious foods
"standout" healing foods
how to design a diet for your individual optimal health, taking into account special dietary needs such as those of women, children, vegetarians, and others
food combining
diet-based healing techniques such as juicing, fasting, and detoxifying
how to avoid potential dietary dangers, including threats to water safety, foodborne diseases, food additives, food irradiation, antibiotics, genetically engineered foods, and undesirable substances such as caffeine, cholesterol, and sugar.
While not a cookbook, Prescription for Dietary Wellness also includes a number of easy, wholesome recipes and advice on cooking methods. It is a complete, practical guide to eating for good health.

Content okay . . . Details Missing!.......2006-05-31
I have searched long and hard for a reference book and this was a let down. I felt the content was mediocre at best and the details behind their "research" and claims were missing. I found a better resource on Inner Health that was very impressive at librarydepot.com It contained a Nutrition Benefits Chart that is unlike anything on the market.
confused by content.......2005-05-18
I was greatly impressed with "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" and when buying this book had that in mind. Both Ms. Balch and Dr. Balch (husband?) produced a very informative work with that title and I'm very thankful for it, regardless of my thoughts toward "...Dietary Wellness".
I picked up a copy of this book today and have been reading it. I was struck by the counsel for total avoidance Ms. Balch gave to all forms of Capsicum (pepper), and the advice that one should avoid both black and white pepper, as well as rice.
I found no remarks as to why this should be the case (which would seem a no-brainer considering the obvious health benefits of Capsicum, assorted Piperaceae and rice in ones diet). 'Leaves me somewhat mystified.
Excellent reference book.......2004-02-10
This book should be an intregal part of anyone's library, because it is full of information for every being's (including pets) health. The information is vital for one's wellness.
empowering information.......2000-08-18
I fond the information in Balch's book empowering. I try to eat a
balanced diet, but I can tell my body isn't getting "enough"
. Her book, although poorly organized in places, gave me the
knowledge about which vitamins, minerals and supplements would be best
for me to add to my diet in order to give it "enough"....
Great Reference Book.......2000-04-11
I have both this book and the other(Pres. for Nutritional Healing). I have found this book to be a great resource. I recommend it to all my friends and family whom I am trying to turn on to nutrition. It is a great "starter book" for people just into diet and nutrition and want to be educated about the things they put into their bodies. It is very informative and an easy read. It is a must for everybody out there wanting to learn about food, their bodies, and how they interact. A wonderful book.
Book Description
"Peter Saunders is, without doubt, one of the top wine tutors in the world."
- Dr. Alan Young, President of the International Wine Academy
Wine labels are cryptic and confusing to most wine consumers. The information provided there indicates specific quality standards, grape varieties, alcohol content and volume of production, but it is often hard to decipher the code.
Wine Label Language is a welcome encyclopedic reference that demystifies and explains how to interpret wine labels. Using simple terms, the book identifies and describes the various regions and appellations used on wine labels around the world. Knowing from which region a wine comes is a critical factor in determining its quality and value. This book introduces the labeling concept of the wine is from this region instead of the wine from this grape. This helps consumers identify the winemaking areas that consistently produce superior vintages.
Newcomers to the delights of wine will learn all the basics, for instance the difference between a Bordeaux and Burgundy. Longtime wine buffs will heighten their enjoyment by understanding the differences within their favorite regions. A single region such as Bordeaux has many distinct areas or districts that affect the wine's quality and price.
Wine Label Language covers every major winemaking region of the world and explains the natural conditions and legal restrictions that each region uses to produce and name its own unique wine.

Wine Label Language .......2005-09-02
This is a great little book to have in your collection whether you are an avid wine enthusiast or you only enjoy an occasional glass. I would not name it the best in it's category, but I would definitly say it is amongst the best. It is both comprehensive and easy to understand at the same time.
A very basic guide designed to help all levels of reader .......2004-11-06
Wine expert Peter Saunders provides a very basic guide designed to help all levels of reader through the potentially confusing wine label in WINE LABEL LANGUAGE. An arrangement by country helps lend quick accessibility to WINE LABEL LANGUAGE, with major wine regions and producers covered from Canada and Chile to South Africa and Germany. There's a major distinction between the descriptions of old-style European wines and newer wines: thus WINE LABEL LANGUAGE is broken down into two distinct sections to reflect this difference, making it easy to absorb.

Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book, however..........2007-06-21
It's been said already that this is very much a coffee table book. I love just flicking through it and admiring the beautiful design elements. I am glad I have this book for the inspiration and the production quality gone into it. There are a few problems with the patterns though: the photos are artsy, and don't always give you a clear idea of the garment construction or how it really hangs; The graphs cover huge areas (ie are small) and printed in the colour of the photographed item, which pitches dark grey against blue for example; and most of the designs are not things that you would wear as they are. Realistically, I would only knit the children's cat jumper as it is. Most of the other patterns aren't structurally flattering, so I would only use the graphical elements but not follow the patterns as they are. However the graphical elements are the most beautiful I've seen.
Impractical Knitting.......2007-05-11
I wish I hadn't bought this book. Fibermom "chomposy"'s excellent review said it all. Except for the cute cat motif pullover for little girls, I can't imagine anyone actually wearing any of the garments in this book. Even then, make sure to consult the little girl first. That said, the photography is gorgeous. When I was young and dumb I sometimes fell for stuff like this. I love to knit for the sensuous feel of the yarn. Furthermore, if I have some knitting on hand I can talk as long as she wishes with my darling mother who, at 88, is suffering some cognitive impairment. However, I prefer to knit things that I know will be worn, and I've become fairly good at picking such projects. If you want to immerse yourself in a complex, far-out knitting project which you will probably only wear once at most then this is the book for you.
Mostly for the Coffee Table.......2007-04-07
I am an experienced knitter, I love my size 1 needles, and I do not fear steeks. Nonetheless, it is pretty clear to me why the reviews of this books tend to be about the photographs, and not about the knitting patterns.
First, while there are 22 sweaters in here, finishing out at everything from 30 to 56 inches, each one generally has a single size. Even when there appear to be size choices, they are so nonstandard as to be largely useless: one sweater comes in two sizes with identical circumference, but one is 1.5 inches longer than the other. Each knitter can expect to find only one or two sweaters in her size, not 22 choices of what to knit.
Then there are the instructions. They are charted, but the charts are very small -- 24 rows to the inch, in some cases, and the squares are in colors like dark blue and black, so following these charts will be about the same as copying a design from a commercially-knitted sweater. In real life, we will probably have to re-chart these, or at least keep a magnifiying glass handy. The directions for one hat tell us to embroider a flower according to the picture, and then include no picture which actually shows the flower on the hat in question. I haven't yet attempted to knit anything from these instructions, but anyone planning to should be prepared to add some creativity to the process.
Now consider the designs themselves. We may rave about them as art objects, but in fact there aren't more than three that would be wearable and stylish as they are written. In general, they are oversized sweaters with boxy shapes and drop sleeves. The colorwork is dramatic and lovely, but enormous. Most of us will look like refrigerators if we wear these. (Slim girls, too, since the sweaters are mostly 45-56" around -- they will just look like drooping refrigerators.)
While there are a couple of sweaters I expect to make at some point, I will probably use this book as a source of color patterns for other designs -- with my magnifying glass at the ready.
Buy this as a reference, or for your coffee table, but don't expect to end up with a couple dozen lovely sweaters from it.
Sumptuous Book.......2007-03-15
A beautiful book that raises knitting to an artform. I'm saving it until I retire so I have time to tackle one of these magnificent projects :)
Beautiful Knitting of DOOOOOM!.......2006-08-31
Ok, so this is a beautiful book, and though it is not out of print, it can be very hard to get hold of. The designs are mostly traditional Norwegian fair isle... But sooooo complex. We're talking mostly size 1 needles here, people, and STEEKING. (Knitters in the know will shudder now, novices get a chill of doom).
But if you flip through, the work is so gorgeous that you actually find yourself wanting to dare... I actually bought the yarn pack for the cover pattern (Season of Darkness and Winter Light). The designs are gorgeous. It is if nothing else, extremely drool-inspiring. [...].

Book Description
"The appeal of such a work will be wide, encompassing professionals and laymen alike. The book is the type which a visitor to Pompeii, or to Italy generally, would want to take along as a
vade mecum [guidebook]."
Robert I. Curtis, Professor of Classics, University of Georgia
When workmen excavating the ruins of Pompeii eagerly gathered the native medicinal plants growing there, Wilhelmina Jashemski discovered that this was another example of the continuity of life in the shadow of Vesuvius. Many of the plants used for herbal medicine around Pompeii today are the same ones that ancient authorities such as Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides recommended for treating the same types of disorders.
In this book, Jashemski presents an herbal of thirty-six medicinal plants, most of them known to the ancients and still employed today. She describes each plant's contemporary medicinal uses and compares them to ancient practices as recorded in literary sources. Scientific, English, and Italian names and the plant's mythological associations complete the entries, while elegant, full-page portraits depict each plant visually.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, beautiful book with lovely photos/illustrations.......2005-05-12
My boss, who teaches graduate studies at UMD where Professor Jashemski also taught for many years recommended her works to me because he knew I had a keen interest in herbal medicine as well as archeology. A POMPEIAN HERBAL was published in 1999, a few short years after THE GARDENS OF POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, AND THE VILLAS DESTROYED BY VESUVIUS, which Jashemski co-edited with Frederick Meyer -- and a masterpiece on this topic and era -- was published.
The Pompeii Herbal demonstrates that medicinal plants have been around thousands of years, and in use until modern petrochemical compounds came on the scene. Furthermore, when Jashemski was working at Pompeii, she discovered the locals around and near Pompeii continued to use medicinal plants noted by the Romans, demonstrating yet again that herbal medicine and homeopathic remedies in use to day are not new. The book includes an informative text about ancient Roman medicinal uses of plants, many lovely photos of the work site and micron photos of seeds, pollens, etc., as well as illustrations of the noted plants.
I discovered reading Jashemski's book that many of the plants used by the ancient Romans grow in my own back yard or in pots - under my care of course, as they are not native to my area: Artemesia, Calamintha nepeta (cat mint), Centranthus ruber, Citrus limon. Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) and Petroselinum crispum (Parsley) to name a few.

How to grow a great garden and not use too much space........1999-03-22
This book tells the reader how to grow a great and wonderful garden without taking up a lot of space. It tells modern ways to garden. It tells how to grow a lot of different kinds of vegetables. For me the raised beds worded wonderfully. This is why I give this book 5 stars!
A great book for backyard gardeners.......1997-03-19
This is one of the two books that actually got me to start my garden (the other being _Square Foot Gardening_ by Mel Bartholomew). In his book, Mr. Bird teaches a method that combines raised bed gardening with square foot gardening. This may sound complicated, but I as an absolute beginner was able to use it to make a garden containing green & wax beans, peppers, tomatoes, zuccinni, watermelon, canteloupe, corn, cucumbers, pumpkins, sunflowers, lettuce, swiss chard, radishes and carrots.
One of the things that I particularly appreciated was his emphasis on finding cheap alternatives to traditional gardening necessities. As an example, he recommends using styrofoam cups with holes punched in the bottom for starting transplants. They are extremely cheap and can be reused year after year.
The book is great for beginners. Besides giving all kinds of basic information on how to get started, it gives specific information on growing several different kinds of popular vegetables.
Whether you are someone just starting out, or an experienced gardener wanting to try a new method of growing lots of plants in a small area, this is definitely a book to be considered. I'm sure I'll be using it as a reference tool years from now.
Book Description
This is the definitive guide for everyone concerned with multiple sclerosis: those who have the disease and those who share their lives with someone who has it. It covers a wide range of topics in a format that is familiar, accessible and easily understood. The comfortable question-and-answer format reflects the collaborative relationship between people with MS and their health care professionals. The authors of each chapter answer the questions that they have been asked repeatedly in the course of their work with MS. There are approximately 350,000 adults in the United States with multiple sclerosis. This extensively revised and updated new edition contains new information on medications, strategies for living with the disease, coping with stress, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
The best overall reference text for questions about Multiple Sclerosis.......2007-04-03
This book answers most of your questions about MS with short, readable, and reliable answers. Very good indexing and cross referencing to related questions helps to find the right question to ask for the information you want. More expensive than other MS books, but packed with far more content. We use this book all the time in my MS support group.
The best.......2006-03-23
I bought this book for a friend who was recently diagnosed with MS. At that point, neurologists and specialized MS-nurses are constantly all over you. This irritates my friend especially when her questions are not answered quickly and fully. That is where the book comes in. My friend says the book is better than her neurologist and the MS-nurse put together.
An important consumer's handbook .......2005-01-03
The brand-new third edition of Rosalind Kalb's classic guide, Multiple Sclerosis: The Questions You Have, The Answers You Need, fully updates medical information with the latest details, covering a range of topics in a handy question-and-answer format which makes it easy to understand MS management. Each chapter also includes a list of references and recommended reading, along with a glossary of terms and resource list, making Multiple Sclerosis an important consumer's handbook with readily-accessible details for concerned non-specialist general readers.
Best MS Reference Book.......2004-07-01
I was diagnosed nearly two years ago, and this book has been a very valuable reference. I keep going back to it again and again as I have questions, and despite other reviewers' comments, I felt it was up to date when I purchased it. Perhaps these comments were based on an older edition? I also found the index to be very user-friendly. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with MS.
Old Answers for New Questions.......2004-04-15
Unfortunately, a lot of this information is out of date -- and even if it wasn't, it's some of the answers to some of the questions you might have, presented in a sometimes easily accessible but sometimes difficult to access fashion. Some of the contributions are far more useful than others.
I appreciate the fact that Rosalind Kalb has been a tireless advocate for people with MS, and I hope she updates this book (with a better format) -- but still I wish there were some MS "advocates" out there who weren't taking drug company money.

Book Description
Goose Lane Editions and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia have released the first comprehensive book on the art of Joe Norris, one of Canada's greatest folk artists. The book was published in conjunction with a major show of Norris' work which opened November 25, 2000 at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and toured the country through 2003. Joe Norris was one of Nova Scotia's greatest folk artists. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and lived in Lower Prospect, Halifax County. For much of his life, he worked as a fisherman and construction worker. At the age of 49, a severe heart attack forced him into retirement and, at the encouragement of a visiting nurse who provided him with materials and prodded him to do a little painting each day, he began to make pictures for himself and for friends. Joe Norris is probably best known for his brilliantly coloured scenes of the rocky coves of Nova Scotia, his paintings of seagulls (sitting on islands or sprinkled about the cove), his hot pink horizons, animals and ships, his paintings of winter night scenes, invariably (and appropriately) titled Starry Night. His work appears on traditional canvas or panel, but also on picture frames, tables, rocking chairs, stools, chests of drawers, and even fireplace mantels. The cove scenes and seagull paintings of Joe Norris have become icons of Nova Scotia over the past quarter century and many people consider the artist to be a national treasure. During his lifetime, his work was represented by Houston North Galleries and the Mira Godard Gallery and is now included in many private and public collections, including the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the McMichael Collection. Joe Norris embodied the free and lively spirit of folk artists who work outside the mainstream, free of any preconceived notions of what art ought to be. His simple paintings arouse feelings of joy in all but the most jaded viewers and provide a window open to his tranquil, but captivating, kingdom by the sea. This tribute to Joe Norris chronicles his life and work in the little fishing village of Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia, twenty-five kilometres and a lifetime away from Halifax. The book features almost 100 colour reproductions of his paintings, a dozen or more documentary photographs, text by Bernard Riordon that places Joe Norris and his work within the context of North American folk art, and shorter essays by Chris Huntington, John Houston, and Philip Brooks.

An Artist Whose Art Makes Me Happy.......2005-12-03
I picked this book up a few years ago after seeing an exhibition of Joe Norris's work. This book is a really great tribute to Joe Norris and you get beautiful reproductions of quite a lot of his art. If you can't go to an exhibition to see his work in person then this is definitely the book to buy.
However, like all great art, you really have to see his work in person to appreciate it fully. The colours are so bright and the images wonderful but, for me, Joe Norris's art is definitely not just a visual experience. The wood panel paintings he made, the furniture he painted, they all have such a great smell to them and all of the colours seem that much more vibrant in person. It may sound really odd but the smell of his work alone makes me feel very comfortable & cozy (reminds me of my family's cabin).
Looking at Joe Norris's artwork in this book reminds me of that & makes me feel happy & content.
Highly recommended.

North vs. South in Medieval Britain.......2000-06-09
A detailed account of the circumstances leading to Buckingham's rebellion, and the connection between the revolt and the ultimate fate of Richard III at Bosworth Field. The focus is on the gentry of the south of England who were loyal to Edward IV and eventually became the instigators of the rebellion. This book may be heavy going for the casual reader since it presumes basic familiarity with the events of the period. A good complement is Paul Murray Kendall's biography of Richard III, which describes how Richard gained support from the nobility and gentry of the north of England. The book includes lots of photographs and helpful maps. All in all, a good read.

A standard work in late medieval English history.......2001-07-28
As one of the wealthiest and most powerful landed families in 15th century England, the Staffords played an important political role (as students of Yorkist history have reason to know). Influence was tied directly to land and Rawcliffe examines the unique Stafford family archives in this study of estate and finance management and the patronage it enabled. The composition and work of the ducal council is also explained, since the council was made up of the duke's senior administrators and lawyers, upon whom the family relied heavily. The Staffords also used litigation rather than combat as their preferred means to an end. Moreover, they were instrumental in causing the crown to change its attitudes toward the nobility as a whole. A somewhat technical historical study in Cambridge's "Studies in Medieval Life and Thought" series, but definitely worth the investment of effort.
