Book Description
For two decades Sympson thought little of his tour of duty as a Marine artillery officer in Vietnam. But recovering from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer probably caused by exposure in Vietnam to Agent Orange, he saw a thread running through his later life and was flooded with memories of events he had never talked about. This book began as an exercise in self-therapy, an attempt to discharge the emotional burdens he had unknowingly carried for so many years.
In August 1965 as a forward observer with the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, the author saw his first combat in Operation Starlite, the first large-scale ground combat operation in Vietnam. In March 1966, as the artillery liaison officer for the renowned Magnificent Bastards of the 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, he fought in Operation Texas, one of the bloodiest battles of the war. For two hours, Sympson directed over 2,500 rounds of artillery fire nearly on top of Echo Company to drive back the Viet Cong who had trapped the Marines at the edge of a heavily fortified village.
From the frontlines in Vietnam, this is a story of fear and dread, anticipation and boredom from a man who served in country.

paddies framed by dikes. Occassional Vietnamese in the
fields. Bent over in the paddies. Shuffling along the roads.

ahead of us begins its descent into the LZ. Suddenly it's

Must read for parents of dyslexic children.......2006-07-16
I strongly recommend this book to parents of dyslexic children and educators. I only wish that I had the information from this book when my son started school 13 years ago. Since this book is written by a professional with dyslexia who has experienced what our dyslexic children experience 24/7, it is more credible. As an educator, I will certainly recommend this book to parents of my dyslexic students!
A refreshingly candid look at living and succeeding with dyslexia........2005-10-06
I have to admit that when I first picked up this book, I was a little put off by the title. I thought maybe this was going to be another one of those books about the "mystique" of dyslexia. I was delighted to find a candid account of how dyslexia affects all aspects of a person's life. Dr Frank's honesty about his own struggles with dyslexia was refreshing. I had to laugh aloud when I read that "if this (dyslexia) is a gift, I'd send mine back." I have a dyslexic husband and son and am well aware of the day-to-day struggles they face with word recall, mental "blurriness," memory blocks, and the fear of embarrassment and failure. This is a wonderful book for those who live or work with dyslexic individuals; it allows you to see the world from their perspective. Dr Frank is honest about the challenges of dyslexia, but also highly encouraging. He gives practical strategies for forming your support team, compensating, and forging ahead despite the challenges and fears that dyslexic individuals face. This book is probably the most balanced that I have read about dyslexia.
The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child.......2004-09-30
This is without question the best book I have ever read regarding dyslexia. I have been researching and reading on the topic for 8 years and not one book has brought me to my knees like this one did.
Robert Frank writes from his heart. He opens the window into the lives of persons who struggle with dyslexia in a very personal, yet professional manner.
My 12 year old daughter is dyslexic. She attended public school through 5th grade - I took her out of school at the beginning of 6th and she is now homeschooled and thriving! What was incredibly sad was that she had been placed in a "special education" classroom with children who were cognitively challenged. There is such incredible misunderstanding of the dyslexic child.
This book offered me a true look into her "secret world" as well as tools to help. I have read various parts of the book to her and she responded with tremendous relief...someone put into words exactly how she "thinks".
This book is a gift to all parents and educators. It's also a gift to the children and adults who struggle with dyslexia.

beautiful book, beautiful pictures of Filipino food.......2007-05-20
I'm not sure what the other reviewer meant by the book not covering traditional Filipino food he's known. This was lovingly put together by Philippine-born Filipinos famous for their work in documenting authentic Filipino cuisine... very unlike other cookbooks whose writers only parachute into the country, if at all, and compile recipes for publication.
True, it's not a typical cookbook that focuses solely on recipes. The first ten or so pages are essays. Its value is not only in the beautiful photographs, but also in the substantial background it provides for Filipino food. What a deal at $12!

more of a coffee table book.......2007-02-18
I purchased this book mainly as a resource for Filipino food. The book has a very apealing layout but if you're looking for a cookbok, this is not the one. This is more of a coffee table book. I was disappointed with the recipe selection because most of them are pretty "entry level" recipes.

I think people are better off asking around for recipes. This book definitely did not cover the traditional Filipino food I've learned to know.

Coffee Table Cookbook.......2005-01-20
This book has great food photography, but as another reviewer stated it is mostly a "coffee table" book. My wife is a Filipina, and she says that Alejandro has taken most of his recipes from his older books and "recycled" them into this one. If you want "hands-on" Philippine recipes, this may not be what you are looking for. It is a great book if you only collect cookbooks but don't use them much.
pretty pictures..........2005-01-09
I am always looking for good Filipino cookbooks. I was delighted to find this while I was browsing until...I looked through the book. It has pretty pictures, it definitely made me think of the Philippines. But I was hoping for a more substantial cookbook, one with more recipes, one I can actually use as a cookbook. This is more of a coffee table book, made to tantalize and not quite functional. It has pretty pictures...

A very good book that not only provides a history on Philippine cuisine, but a surprisingly comprehensive collection of favorite Filipino dishes that is simple to follow.
If you are looking for a book about Filipino dishes, you won't go wrong with this one.
The Food of the Philippines.......2001-05-16
This book help me a lot and it's very encouraging to see a picture of what you'll be cooking so you know how it would look like. It has a substitute ingredients too, if you can't find some oriental ingredients. I recommend this to people who love to cook Asian foods. The best so far with the Filipino recipe books that I've used.

Owning a professional aviary housing over 300 exotic parrots I require an extensive library of easy to read and well indexed books. This book is always the one I grab first. In addition to it's valuable and well-written content, it also contains a huge collection of fantastic photographs. I highly recomend this book for pet owners and breeders alike.

The author was Henry Bates, my uncle, who passed away in 1968. He was a kind and brillant man who I continute to miss. I am gratified that his works are still available. Thanks, Dan Meador

Nice range of examples categorized by how they look. An example is "ornate, curlique, sinuous". More a look book reference than a topic/subject reference. Examples include books, posters, ads, CD/DVD, web designs...all using art with a human touch.

Handwritten is a history lesson and an inspiration piece, breaking into a series of successive styles from polished to grunge. The exploration is seemingly complete, and as the above commentor wrote, will inspire you to pick up a pencil and sketchbook, and have at it.

Heller and Ilic's book is a collection of (in my opinion, and theirs), exemplary work in the world of graphic design in which the "handwritten" has been implemented in the artists' works.
Examples range from magazine covers, traditional advertisements, film festival posters, album covers, book covers and other media/art. There is a wide range of styles covered, and though there is not a lot of text that accompanies each featured piece, the descriptions of the work are insightful to how (in the opinion of the authors) the text/design work, and in what ways. For instance, the authors comment on one poster which used a childish scrawl saying, "Scrawl is most effective when located with a generous helping of negative space, as is portrayed elegantly in this poster etc.etc."
Though you might not agree with their observations, you will most definitely get something valuable out of your disagreement, wether it is a better sense of your own visions and style/likes/dislikes.
All in all, this book is worth the money. It is bound to inspired you to break out a pencil and your sketchbook again.

I started this book one day, and couldn't put it down until I was finished! EXCELLENT!!! You two did a wonderful job! You addressed all of the important issues that we deal with, and in such easy to understand explanations and terms.
