    ASIN: 0967107717

    Book Description

This book speculates about the important inventions, scientific discoveries, and political and social developments, which may occur during the coming millennium. It does this by presenting -- through the eyes of a fictitious author living in the year 3000 -- a list of the 100 men and women who have had the greatest impact on world history and on the everyday lives of individuals.

The hundred persons are ranked in order of their influence. The main section of the book consists of short biographies of those 100 persons, describing what each person accomplished, and why that person is so important.

Forty-five of the entries are actual historical personages. These include such well known figures as Jesus Christ, Confucius, Charles Darwin, Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, and George Washington.

Among the fifty-five entries from the third millennium are: Sue Ellen Green (who develops a cancer vaccine); Miguel Carranza (chief founder of the United World Federation); Stella Ricardo Garcia (architect and formscaper); Mika Kivikoski (who develops the technology to control the weather); and Shu Gungwu (who finds the solution to the baffling "mind-body problem").

Other topics treated include: space travel and space colonies; medical advances (such as artificial organs, and reversible sex-change operations); arts and entertainment (including music, literature, the visual arts, and sports and games); solar power; philosophy (including political theory, epistemology, semantics, and ethics); mathematics, pollution control, robots, brainwashing; nuclear warfare; robots; and artificial intelligence.

The book includes a historical chart (listing the main events of both the actual past and the projected future), a list of honorable mentions (and their accomplishments); a glossary, and an extensive index.

    4 out of 5 stars Year 3000.......2001-10-26

Dr. Hart presents a unique vision of the future. However, he expects nothing wonderous from artificial intelligence (it is legally banned) and rather little from computers in general. In his world of the future, virtual reality is also banned, but sex change operations flourish--with most people undergoing multiple operations in their lifetime.

The system of education, too, is curious. First, it must be truly important, because all of his new entries in this book (I think there are fifty five in all) have attended university for a long time. Today, highly educated people attend universities for years after high school, but in the distant days of the future fantastic described by Dr. Hart, it often takes them decades to do so--obviously this arrangement may be more appealing to academics than the population in general. This protracted schooling takes place despite the fact that direct downloading of information from computers into the brain is possible in that world of the day after tomorrow. Explanation for this paradox: downloading of information provides only the knowledge of facts, but no "understanding." One wonders how perfect brainwashing (another idea that Hart describes as almost imminent) can be real when "downloading" can do no more than supply the human brain with facts. Also, people generally work between 20 and 60 years before they retire; in fact, his most influential people after the year 2000 go to school for almost as long as they work afterwards--then they either live in perpetual retirement, or perish in some accident (although there is at least one suicide). This vision of the future of long schooling, important intellectual work, and endless retirement is the academic's utopia.

One striking feature of Hart's predicitions is that almost everybody who is among the most influential after the twnety-first century comes either from Asia or Africa. As far as I am able to tell, nobody among the most influential people born after the twenty-first century comes from Western Europe. Few of the influential people are people are born outside the earth--mostly in sun-orbiting colonies.

I think in some sense Dr. Hart's view of the year 3000 is too conservative. By 3000, I expect contact with other civilizations in outer space. (While Dr. Hart states very explicitly his view that life is very rare or nonexistent outside the earth, at least in our galaxy.) I also expect cyborgs, genetically engineered creatures of all kinds, virtually real worlds, and very advanced artificial intelligence, whose knowledge and understanding will surpass by far anything a human being can attain.

Having said all that, no one can rule out the possibility that mankind will destroy itself before the fantastic world of 3000 is reached--the world is precarious place to inhabit.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly imaginative...........2000-04-23

Michael Hart's brilliant imagination takes the reader on a tour de force of history from the great religious, political and scientific leaders of the past to the imagined ones of the future. See how Jesus, Moses, and Mohammed compare with Hitler, Stalin and those yet to come in influence (whether good or bad, history is the judge). Or Newton, Darwin, and Einstein, with the biotechnologists of the 21st century. Fantastic entertainment and erudition. I enjoyed every moment.

5 out of 5 stars A Book for All Tastes.......2000-04-19

Educational, thought provoking and thoroughly entertaining. This is a book for all tastes. The non-fiction entries give us interesting and informative profiles of the men and women who have or are shaping our world. The other entries, speculating on the major events of the 21st century and character types behind those events, are as entertaining as they are intellectually facinating and plausible. This is a carefully thought out and well written work whose chapters can be reread and enjoyed in any order. It's a keeper that you don't want to miss.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting - A different perspective.......2000-04-01

An interesting read. I wouldn't agree with some of the predicted technological developements (an easy sex change? - a little too PC) but I still enjoyed the exercise. The 'real' entries were a good review of history. I actually learned a little Chinese history too - enough to make me want to learn more.

5 out of 5 stars If You Love History. . ........1999-12-10

Michael H. Hart gives his unique view of what the world might be like in the year 3000. This book is well written and quite imaginative. You will enjoy reading this title.

      Book Description

An estimated 41 million Americans have the condition identified since 2002 as prediabetes, which, if left unchecked, inevitably will lead to full-blown diabetes. From one of the world’s leading diabetes “patient-experts,” this first-ever practical guide offers fifty essential, informative ideas and simple steps to help this vast and rapidly growing constituency manage their condition and thereby reduce their chances of developing full-blown diabetes. Prediabetes clearly explains what readers can do today, no matter what their age, and whether or not they have a family history of diabetes, a severe weight problem, or are members of an ethnic group at high risk—including Hispanics, Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Helpful drawings and graphs are featured throughout in this new, revised edition.

5 out of 5 stars If you're at risk, please read this!.......2007-07-25

I've been worried about developing diabetes for the past year. Last fall my fastin glucose level was a little high. It went back down when I started using my treadmill. Then I started a long daily commute, which ended the treadmill. The glucose level was back up even more.

This book has been immensely helpful. I love the guiding words "Eat less, move more" as a simple way to begin changing my lifestyle. I always tried things to extreme to lose weight and failed over time. I'm also taking her advice and getting a glucose testing device to test after eating various things to see how they affect me. My doctor thought it was a great idea.

Anyway, I can't say enough good about this book.

5 out of 5 stars Let Gretchen Becker and her book minister to your health.......2007-05-24

This book is very informative and thorough. It covers all the major topics you need to be aware of in case you are at risk of contracting diabetes type 2. If diabetes runs in your family and, you are overweight and sedentary, you seem to be at risk. The book is divided into short, easy to read chapters. Ms. Becker, besides being knowledgeable, is a gifted writer that uses humour and a no non-sense approach to present her material. I am glad that this book fell in my hands. Everybody concerned with and/or at risk of diabetes should read this book.

      4 out of 5 stars Wise investment.......2007-05-07

This book is like getting everyday tips about a person's experience so you don't get the disease. It saves the reader tons of time. The medical community does not spend enough time educating their patients. This books is the first step in solving this problem. I also highly recommend Fuhrman's Eat to Live.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for prediabetics!.......2007-03-23

I can't say enough good things about this book! This is a very intelligent yet clear overview of prediabetes, the factors that affect it, and what you can do about it. The information is the best I've found so far (including information from the American Diabetes Association), and the writing is excellent. The thing I like the most is that Ms. Becker's attitude is frank and realistic towards the reader--this _is_ serious stuff we're dealing with--but she never once judges or blames the patient/reader. This book is very encouraging and practical. Worth every penny, and I'd have paid much more. (I've read it twice within two weeks.)

5 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need on this subject.......2006-07-30

I was diagnosed with prediabetes and immediately did a search for more information on this potentially dangerous condition. This book is wonderful. I found myself a student again, studying and highlighting all the pertinent phrases and best of all, the author has written this all in plain English! I didn't have to have a medical degree to read it.
I finished it by the next day and have since started tracking my sugars, especially the carbs, after having a look at what my future could hold if I continued eating all the processed foods and being the couch potato that I am.

      Book Description

      Joza Brizova

In Czechoslovakia, a country known for fine cooks, a copy of Varime Zdrave Chutne a Hospodarne graces nearly every kitchen. Now this best-selling Czechoslovak cookbook has been adapted for American use. The Czechoslovak Cookbook contains over 500 authentic recipes that convey the essence of Czechoslovak cuisine.

Hearty soups made from modest ingredients are one of the hallmarks of Czechoslovak cuisine. Contained in this volume are recipes for such favorites as Garlic Soup, Creamed Fish Soup, and Rye Bread Soup. Robust meat dishes include Ginger Roast Beef, Braised Beef with Vegetables and Sour Cream, Beef Goulash, Tartar Beefsteak, Mutton with Marjoram, Veal Cutlets with Mushrooms, Stuffed Breast of Veal, Veal Paprika, Roast Pork with Capers, Braised Sweetbreads, and a variety of pates.

The poultry and game chapter contains recipes for Chicken Paprika, Roast Capon, Roast Goose. Stuffed Roast Squab, Roast Hare with Sour Cream, and Leg of Venison with Red Wine.

The Czechs are particularly fond of meals centered around egg dishes and dumplings, for instance Baked Eggs with Chicken Livers, Farina Omelet, Noodle Souffle with Cherries and Nuts, Noodles with Farmer Cheese, Napkin Dumplings, Dumplings with Smoked Meat, and Sour Cream Pancakes. Rounded out with a vegetable dish like Sauteed Cabbage, Green Beans Paprika, or Stuffed Kale Rolls, these entrees make a tasty and inexpensive dinner.

The Czechs are justifiably famous for their baking, and The Czechoslovak Cookbook is full of delectable baked goods: Bohemian Biscuits. Crisp Potato Sticks, Salt Rolls, Pretzels, Christmas Twist, Checkerboard Cookies, Bishop's Bread, and Honey Cake.

Suitable for both the experienced cook and the novice who hasn't ventured beyond broiling a steak, The Czechoslovak Cookbook is a valuable asset to any kitchen.

4 out of 5 stars Many good, traditional recipes.......2007-08-08

I've owned this book for years and use it frequently. As a Czech, I find it quite authentic. Many of the recipes come out just as I remember them from my childhood. The BUCHTY recipe is excellent, for example, as are many or the CUKROVI ones. I am surprised by the reviewer who says some of the dishes aren't authentic, because I've always had the impression that this book was a translation of a Czech cookbook. I agree with those reviewers who say that some of the dishes are unpractical or unpalatable in the American context. But such is the nature of Czech food! I like the fact that the names of the dishes are given in Czech and in English. My one problem with the book is the poorly organized index. Otherwise, DOBROU CHUT!

      4 out of 5 stars Czech Cooking.......2005-10-22

I have several local Czech cookbooks, but this one is much better. The recipes are true Czech and not American-Czech which are some of the area cookbooks. I like the American recipe name with the Czech name under it. I am married to a Czech and he has enjoyed the pasteries I have made.

      5 out of 5 stars Authentic Indeed.......2004-12-26

The original Brizova publication features simple, solid cooking and uses ingredients most kitchens readily have on hand. I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary in the cookbook, save to say if you don't like tongue and tripe and liver and heart, then simply take a pass at the recipes that use it.

The real trick to honest Czech cooking is to make a tasty dish out of a few simple ingredients and to prepare it well. As in America, Czechs cook to their own taste (thus the arguments regarding spices) creating personalized specialties from standbys such as dumplings, strudel, kolache and breads, fixing it to suit the tastes of those they cook for.

Certain foods are a staple ~ dumplings, potatoes, rye bread; root vegetables such rutabaga, parsnips, celery root, turnips. Kale, cabbage, cauliflower, and celery are also frequently used. Horseradish and vinegar are common condiments, often sweetened to taste with a little sugar. Czechs aren't afraid of butter, lard, chicken fat, goose greese, sausage, cured meats, cheese (farmer's cheese, cottage cheese .. not the hard cheese) and sour cream. Perhaps not food to eat while on a diet because it will stick to your ribs and fill you up and keep you going and going.

All in all, I treasure my taped up, spotted, tattered copy of Ms Brizova's original book and browse it frequently, each time revisiting my childhood. Here's timeless old-country cooking that will never go out of style.

3 out of 5 stars Good, with qualifications.......2004-09-19

As a Czech I can say that this book is good, if somewhat misleading. There are a great many recipes in the book that most Czechs have probably never heard of, and if they have, have never themselves had. As with people in most of the countries in Europe, Czechs have their tried and true favorites which they cook, by American standards, very frequently. If one only knew as a non-Czech what these best hits were they would not be dissatisfied with this book. However there is much room to go astray. Nevertheless I find some of the recipes in this book to be very good and have had the occasion to cook them for other czechs who enthusiastically agreed with me. The Time-Life book that covers the cooking of Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia is an excellent book with fewer disappointments for the non-native person. But, if you like to experiment, you will eventually stumble upon some very good recipes with this book as well.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good Czech cookbook.......2003-09-09

I have to disagree with Rita's review - I am Czech (I came here from Prague with my parents when I was very young), and grew up with Czech cooking. I don't remember my family ever using mace & nutmeg in recipes (although we did use a little bit of allspice in our goulash)... Also, as for the flours used in the desserts, I don't find them hard to find. The local grocery store carries the grainier-type flour, Wondra, which works perfectly well in the recipes. I do admit, though, that there are a few recipes in this book that I find strange & wouldn't try them... But overall, the book has some good recipes.

As for adapting these for 'today's cook' - I think the recipes lose a LOT if you "Americanize" them. The reason it is Czech food is just that - it's Czech, not American. It may use some different ingredients, but that is what makes it inherently Czech. Otherwise, you'll just get American. And why buy the book? Some things you just can't substitute.

5 out of 5 stars The new and expanded edition of an ethnic culinary classic.......2001-09-12

This new and expanded edition of an ethnic culinary classic provides a solid and important introduction to a cuisine which all too rarely receives its own book outside of general European cooking. Three new chapters to this edition of Peter Trnka's Best Of Czech Cooking add focus on pork, mushrooms and drinks, while the remainder is filled with Czech basics. No photos, but the recipes are easy enough without them.

1 out of 5 stars Real Czech cooking without pork? Unimaginable!.......1999-08-02

The major handicap of this book is the almost complete lack of pork dishes, so typical and essential in Bohemian and Moravian cooking. More or less authentic Czech sausages and hams may be hard to come by in the US, but is there a shortage of pork meat? So, the book misses a major part of the better dishes that Czech cooking has to offer. I would advise the editors of Hippocrene Books to check the subjects in their publications a little bit more carefully.

A lively appreciation of cats from tip to tail, this witty analysis considers everything we think we know about cats, and offers something new, too. Meet cats in high places such as Winston Churchill's ginger tom, who attended cabinet meetings, and Teddy Roosevelt's cat, Slippers, who came to dinner. Filled with warm, vivid speculations on their lives and times, their social psychic, mythological legacy, and their impenetrable mysteries, this charming book offers a delightful and loving cat's-eye view of the world to be read and cherished by all their human friends.

Another wonderful book from one of my favorite authors. A must read if you live with moggies or are considering the adoption of one. This book made me laugh out loud reading about Boston Blackie (I've entertained thoughts of a hired killer a few times with my brood)and gave me chills while reading the chapters on the cat in history. I've bought copies of this book for cat loving friends and like all of Barbara Holland's books, a keeper.

      5 out of 5 stars A keeper........2002-10-12

When it comes to cats, I'm a sap. There is only one cat in my house, and there will be for quite awhile because my cat will not tolerate any others in her presence. In fact, if you were to attempt such a foolish task as trying to introduce another feline in our house you would be faced with my cat bullying the other to the bottom of our couch in the living room, and observing pieces of hair everywhere that my cat has pulled out of the other.

In our futile attempt to find a way to alleviate this behavior, my wife and I went through several books, dozens of phone calls to veterinarians in Lincoln and Omaha (Nebraska) and were never to find a way to keep our tort shell from beating up on the calico kitten we brought home. Finally, however, we had to give the calico to my stepdaughter.

In our desperate attempt to find a way to stop Pokeman (yes, at last I reveal the cat's name) from being a bully we discovered this wonderful book by Barbara Holland. It starts with a tale of hope for our family with a short essay called "The Conversion of Boston Blackie". Boston Blackie was a stray that would terrify all the other cats in the author's household. It became so bad that Ms. Holland actually hired someone to assassinate Blackie. As it turns out, there was no need to do so, as for some reason the cat converted. Truly a story that kept us going for awhile in our fruitless attempt to convert our cat.

There's great stuff in this book, including the one I mentioned, some of it very sad (a story of a woman who would only let her cat live alone in a basement), some of it useful (how to wash a cat to prevent allergens from reacting).

Lyrical, recommended, and picked up at our house and browsed through frequently.

5 out of 5 stars The mind of the cat (alternate title).......2001-06-24

I've already pressed "Secrets of the Cat" into the hands of my husband and my two of my best friends and said, "You must read this."

So what were the odds that all of them would actually read the book and enjoy it? Slim to none, I'd have guessed from previous treatments of my recommendations.

In this case though, both husband and friends were hooked from the first page. The author begins with the tale of Boston Blackie, a cat who went berserk in the presence of other felines. He ripped off their ears, he gouged out their eyes, he sent them streaking for the bushes even at feeding time. And then, one day...but I don't want to spoil Blackie's story for you. Just a hint - his name was changed to Basil and no anatomical alterations were involved.

Barbara Holland has written an extremely personal book about the history, lore, and personality of 'Felis libyca.' In the chapter, "A Choice of Cats" she does riffs on many of the different feline breeds, but it is easy to see that the Siamese is her favorite:

"Properly treated, Siamese develop a deep, single-hearted devotion to their people and overreact to competition, absences, and infidelity like an adolescent in love. They need attention, and think nothing of pulling the books out of the bookcase and the pictures off the walls to get it. They demand notice in a raucous, echoing voice that many people and some other cats find alarming; the sound has been compared to that of a giant sea gull in distress. Taking on a Siamese is rather like getting married."

Our own preference is for Maine Coons (we share the house with five), and Barbara Holland tells a great story about them, too. Not that I agreed with everything she wrote. For instance, she stated that gray cats as a class are much friendlier than tabbies, which is exactly the opposite of our experience---and we've lived with two grays and about a million tabbies over the years.

Holland is also very upset by some of the artificially propagated breeds, such as the Cornish Rex and the Scottish Fold. Her chapter on "Show Business" is sad, hilarious, and razor-sharp---sometimes all three in the same sentence. Even if you think she is way off-base on her assessment of say, Himalayans or feline intelligence or declawing procedures, you'll want to keep reading until the end of the book. She is opinionated even to the point of irritation, but she is also extremely readable.

And Holland never confuses 'cat' with 'cute.'

There is one chapter in "Secrets of the Cat" (originally titled "The Name of the Cat") that you might want to skip: not because it is badly written, but because it is totally horrifying. That chapter is called, "Cats and the Church" and it relates the history of cats in (primarily) medieval Europe.

5 out of 5 stars If you love cats, you're going to love this!.......2001-02-02

This is a book written by someone that loves and understands cats very deeply. Some of the stories made me laugh to tears, while others made me cry. I believe that the story of the cat who was so lonely that found friends in the cellar mice is the saddest cat tale I've ever read. The book is well researched, however I disagree with some of the author's views on witchcraft. But that doesn't change the fact that every catlover is going to love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point for picking a name.......2004-04-23

This book provides an excellent explanation of the "science" of picking a Chinese name. It describes the significance of "elements" (e.g., gold, fire, earth, etc.), the date and time of your child's birth, and the number of strokes to selecting a name. By breaking down the process of choosing a name into readily digestible steps, this book makes the process very understandable and actually somewhat fun (versus some other books on this same topic.).

This book rates a "4" instead of "5" as a result of two issues -- both of which are surmountable. First, the book is not current; it only provides the necessary charts relating to the date/time of birth through the end of 1999.

BUT -- anyone with even a trivial understanding of Microsoft Excel can readily create a chart that extrapolates the necessary charts through to the present. After all, the table entries REPEAT every 60 entries, and thus all you need to do is manually create a calendar in Excel and map the entries to the calendar.

Second, the book does not (cannot) adequately prevent you from choosing unbelievably stupid combinations. For example, the characters "Ying" and "Man" (in Cantonese) are acceptable choices for the first and middle characters. Of course, together these words mean "English." Thus, you really must ask a native Chinese speaker to doublecheck whatever name you select.

                              Good book, and good luck.

4 out of 5 stars New edition for year 2002 onwards.......2002-12-08

I am considering this book since I'm looking for an auspicious name for my baby who will be born next year (2003). But according to one of the readers, it is outdated if you need to determine the best name for year 2001 onwards.
Will the author Evelyn Lip considering of
publishing new edition for year 2002 onwards so that
we can determine what is the best name base on the element and
                              birth date.

                              3 out of 5 stars Outdated for 2001 babies.......2001-06-13

Good book overall, but for some sections where there are recommendations for names or elements, the book stops at the year 2000, so it's useless for people like me who's trying to find names for new baby born in 2001.

4 out of 5 stars How to choose a Chinese name using Chinese name analysis.......1998-06-30

This book explains the ancient calculations involved in choosing a Chinese name. It uses Mandarin pinyin and simplified characters and is writen in English. The ancient theories include: the 5 elements; number of strokes for yin-yang; the lunar birthdate and 8 characters; and the Chinese horoscope. As well, 300 English names are translated into Chinese.
