Since the days when doctors routinely made house calls and sat by the bedside offering comforting words along with medical care, the doctor-patient relationship has become increasingly impersonal and superficial. As medical technology and treatment have improved, and time constraints have become more demanding, the beneficial effects of meaningful doctor-patient interactions have too often been overlooked. Nonetheless, objective clinical trials have repeatedly shown that real, measurable benefits to the patient occur through the "placebo effect," the positive effects of the doctor's presence and personality plus the patient's belief in the efficacy of the treatment.

Dr. W. Grant Thompson, a frequent consultant on the design of clinical trials, reviews the history of the placebo effect and the evidence of its benefits to health in this lively, informative, and scientifically rigorous book. He looks at both the planned use of placebos in blind clinical trials and the unplanned placebo effects arising out of the doctor-patient relationship, the passage of time, and the perceptions of the patient. Dr. Thompson emphasizes that placebos in themselves have no intrinsic benefit; what matters is how the treatment is provided and under what circumstances. He argues that understanding the placebo effect is important for the care of the ill, the design of clinical trials, and healthcare policy planning. He contends that we should be using judiciously the best medical evidence, but even that can be undermined by insensitive delivery. Healthcare policy can only gain from taking both vital components of medical care into consideration.

Excellent.......2005-03-22

This binder is put together in a simple to follow format. There is section on the basics with excellent information on temperature and placement of briquets. The recipes are all easy to follow and good meals, nothing gourmet with strange or hard to find ingredients. Many outside of the "just put a roast in" type. Great breads and desserts too! Perfect for any dutch oven owner, especially a family or scout troop looking for one book with several good recipes.

This is an excellent book for those starting out in "D.O." cooking because unlike other books, it actually explains how to set the temperature -- i.e. how many briquets to use and where to place them. And, you can easily copy and laminate the recipes you want to use in camp thanks to the handy binder format. There are books out there with better recipes (sorry, recipes calling for Sprite are scary), but the reality is once you know HOW to cook with a DO, you can pretty much use any of your favorite recipes. i recently picked up "Classic Homemade Casseroles" at a used book store; it has more tempting ideas than this book.

Not exactly what I had in mind!.......2002-05-10

Overall, I think that this is a great cookbook. It's in a great 3-ring plastic binder that will stay open while you're cookin', and you can wipe off just about any "grahdoo" that you splatter on it. There are tons of recipes in it, but they're just not what I had in mind. I'm from Texas, and I know that most of the folks who wrote these recipes are from Utah and thereabouts. I guess they eat differently than I. Most of these recipes are modern dishes that you'd find in the kitchen, adapted for dutch ovens. But I was lookin' for more backwoods, down-home, stick-to-yer-ribs type grub. I'd rather have 20 good recipes like that. Another thing is that there's not much in the book about cookin' over an open fire, which I prefer because it's more authentic. Anyway, to each his own. Coincidentally, I'm still lookin'.

Important information.......2002-04-10

This book has very good information on temperature control. After purchasing several books on Dutch Oven cooking this one gave the best descriptions on temperature control methods. While I have yet to put the actual recipes into practice the emphasis placed on ensuring the fledgling DO cook's first experiments aren't disasters are appreciated.

lovin' dutch oven cookbook.......2000-04-27

This book was purchased to learn how to cook in a dutch oven for a living history presentation at my child's school. I learned how to perfectly season my new oven (it came out great) and I made the Pioneer Journey Cake which is an authentic mid 1800's wagon train recipe. Cakes can have a mind of their own in a modern gas oven, so I had my doubts, but with Joan's tips on calculating oven temperature it came out perfect the first time. This book offers tips and recipes for everyone from the beginner to the sophisticated oven user.

An invaluable resource for the quilt historian ,conservator or just an interested quilter. The illustrations helped me to identify fabric by period,style and color. The text gave me invaluable information to help identify a puzzling old quilt which was found stuffed in a chimney undisturbed for 90 years. Barbara Brackman is the author to read when one seeks information about quilts and their history. I enjoyed the chapter identifications allowing me to quickly access the fabric type I was seeking.

This book gives a very good compressive over view of fabrics in a certain time frame. While I bought it for reference I discovered it is quite enjoyable just to read. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in fabrics. It would be especially useful to a beginning fabric aficionado.

what a wonderful resource book for anyone who is interested in fabric/fiber arts.
i'm a quilter who likes to create quilts with a flair from yesterday. this book not only helps me to be closed in my interpretation of that time, it does guide me through the decision which colors have been more used than others. the contents/pictures are very clear and the instructions to recreate some of the quilts are outstanding. i would give this book 6 stars!

Wonderful book.......2005-03-25

I really like the layout on this book - full color pages of historical fabric swatches on the left pages, and comparison reproduction print swatches on the right. Wonderful book for anyone wishing to glean a good understanding of what historical prints look like and how they evolved.

If our children really learn that the decisions they make, even small decisions, have an affect on the world they inhabit they will have received a true and relevant education. As a teacher and a mother, I read this book with great relish. The time has come for humane education, our world has never needed it more. I will buy this book for many parents and educators I know. This book is inspiring! If I ever have a day when I am full of despair for the state of the world, I will pick up Zoe Weil's book! Her optimism for a future full of wise decision makers is contagious. Weil describes people who are making a difference and offers her common sense method for teaching people about current issues. The book is clearly written, is full of ideas for curriculum implementation, and offers a large list of resources.

Weil points out that humane education is about providing accurate information and offering positive choices. It does not tell people what to think. Her activities promote critical thinking, instill reverence, and are fun. If every educator had this book, we would change the world in a generation!

The Second World War completely changed its major participants and exacted some huge sacrifices from all involved. This and other books about the people who did the fighting shows how similar the attitudes were on all sides. The main character changes some of his thinking after the war, but his thoughts and actions during the war are really interesting, especially when compared to the thoughts and actions of the people on other sides.

An awesome true story. Definitely one of the three best books I've read in the past decade. In a time like this of Osama bin Labens and shocking inter-civilizational conflict, Fuchida's life story shows how true reconciliation and inter-cultural brotherhood can be experienced. It gives hope in spite of the huge obstacles to inter-cultural understanding. A powerful human interest story. Don't miss it!

A materfully written and truly inspirational book!.......2000-08-16

A friend of mine introduced me to this book in April of this year. He told me it was unlike any book about the Pacific war that he had ever read. Although skeptical at first, I sill went ahead and purchased the book. I left it on my book-shelve for several months and forgot all about it. As I began packing up in July to move I noticed this book again, so I picked it up and began reading it. I found the style of writing extremely fluid, and the chapters were concise. This well balanced account of Mitsuo Fuchida life traces it from his days as an Imperial naval aviator to Christian evangelist. 'God's Samurai' is a truly inspirational book filled with numerous accounts of honor, bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice - all the codes of a Samurai warrior. I have enjoyed this book tremendously, and I have just begun reading, 'Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan: The Japanese Navy's Story' by Mitsuo Fuchida, Roger Pineau (Editor),Masatake Okumiya(Contributor). Both 'God's Samurai' and 'Midway' are 'must-have' books for anyone who is truly interested in the Pacific war and naval battles!
