General Douglas MacArthur has been hailed as the greatest soldier in American history. While not everyone would agree with that assessment, there is no question that MacArthur played a prominent role in the emergence of the United States as a world power in the twentieth century. A distinguished combat soldier during World War I and an innovative educator at West Point in the 1920s, MacArthur became the army’s chief of staff during the Great Depression. He went abroad in the 1930s to prepare the Philippines for war. His stand against the Japanese following Pearl Harbor made him a national hero, and his subsequent campaign against Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific only added to his reputation. The Korean War gave MacArthur a final opportunity to display his military skills.

MacArthur and the American Century assembles for the first time a nuanced and full scrutiny of MacArthur’s entire career. Essays by such experts as Stanley L. Falk and D. Clayton James accompany materials by Dwight D. Nice Little Overview.......2006-05-02

I honestly think that there is such a vast difference between Depression and Bipolar Disorder, I think they should have just gone ahead and printed two separate books.

This book is well-written and easy to read, and short. It provides a quick overview of what these illnesses are, warning signs, an overview of treatments, and getting accommodations at school.

I liked the short stories from parents about real-life kids with these disorders, and I liked the one line tipes and summaries on every couple pages, offset in the margins.

I was rather shocked that in the short section on dietary supplements they only mention SAM-e and St. John's Wort without mentioning Omega-3 Fatty Acids which HAVE been proven to be of help. It was even mentioned as using as an adjunct with lithium.

There also wasn't any emphasis on "sleep hygiene" which is always touted as being so important to success.

It is far from a "Bible" of adolescent Depression or Bipolar Disorder, but as I said, it is a nice little overview.

I would like to respond to the person suggesting the key to success for these recipes is to substitute Splenda for Stevia. Hello??!!! The whole point of Stevia is that it is a natural sweetener, not a chemical who's long-term effects ARE untested and will likely end up the way of toxic aspartame. This review did not help me decide at all whether this book is worth purchasing.

So Disappointing.......2002-01-30

I was so excited to find this cookbook as I am trying to eliminate harmful chemicals from my diet. I tried more than half of these recipes, each of them a total disaster. I thought it was the quality of stevia, so I bought several different kinds. Still, each concoction had a san turn out.

Flavor Enhancer Bible.......2001-11-06

I keep this cookbook in the drawer next to the stove. It has been a god send. I love the last chapter on flavor enhancers. The Sweet and Spicy Texas Rub goes in all the grill meats, and the traditional barbecue sauce makes killer barbecue wings, I would put these in competition with any sugar loaded barbecue wings. My key secret is that I replace the stevia with splenda and follow the packet requirements in the recipes. The only recipe I didn't like was a recipe for Peanut Butter balls. No-Bake Cheesecake recipe I have memorized (not intentionally). I have several Lo-Carb cookbooks this is my favorite.

Disappointing.......2001-10-28

Lots of recipes that only require a little sweetening, with stevia substituted for sugar. I could do that on my own. Too many of the "tough" recipes, like desserts, flopped and had to be thrown out when I tried them, and I am not usually too stupid to follow a recipe.

Finally muffins on a low carb diet!.......2000-06-21

This book is great- much more variety than any other low carb book I have ever read. Most recipes are easy to follow. I can finally have cookies, pasta, and muffins without cheating!

This book was extremely helpful to me. I had some spots in the garden that needed color, but I wanted the option to change the look from year to year. Annuals were the answer. This book gave me many choices, color combinations and plant combinations that I never would have thought of. I grow all of my annual flowers from seed to save money, so it was very helpful in that respect as well.

As I approach Perimenopause, I've been reading as many books as I can on the subject so I know what's going to happen and what I can do to relieve the symptoms. This book has been a great help. It explains what will happen and why it is happening. There's a handy list of symptoms of Perimenopause and solutions to these symptoms. There's a list of what routine checkups a woman should have at certain ages. Hormone Replacement Therapy is discussed as well as natural remedies for those who don't want to go the HRT route. The book also has chapters on the four major diseases women face as they age and how they can help prevent the diseases through weight control, diet, and exercise. Fertility and Infertility is discussed at length as is sexuality and Menopause. There's a chapter on how to find the right doctor and a very helpful chapter with examples of what some women went through during Menopause.

This was a very informative book. I can't say I'm looking forward to Perimenopause, but at least now I know what's going to happen. There were many charts that I found helpful, especially the ones showing the risk factors for Breast Cancer, Alzheimer's, Heart Disease and Osteoporosis. Scary stuff but good to know. The list of symptoms of Perimenopause was also helpful.

The one qualm I have about this book is that it was written in 1999 and discusses HRT as being more risk free than recent studies have shown. The authors have already revised the book once and I'm hoping they put out a third edition discussing the study results.

Clear, concise, helpful.......2000-06-14

While this book helped me self-diagnose my earliest menopausal symptoms, I think the authors deserve a real thumbs up for the information on how to find the best doctor - and how to talk to this doctor once you find him or her. Talking to my gyno about the change proved VERY frustrating - but this book made me feel like I wasn't alone and gave tips on how to get referred to a specialist in hormonal issues. What a difference! Thanks Drs Teaff and Wiley!

Really easy to read, yet full of info.......2000-01-23

This book has helped me a lot - especially the part on how to tell the difference between PMS and perimenopause. The chapter on how to find the right doctor was also right on the money. I am in my mid-forties and trying to conceive. Dr. Teaff and Wiley have more information on middle age fertility and how to keep it going than any of the other dozens of books I've read on the topic.

This book is lying on my bedside table. I found the authors addressed the symptoms of perimenopause in an easy-to-read, and easy-to-relate to manner. They presented information about hormone therapy but didn't insist that it was the only way to go. I never got the sense they were trying to sell their readers on a particular treatment or point of view, just to rather lay out all the options.

This is a "OK" book with some good and insightful information. I did find that some of the facts, as they were presented, to be erroneous. So if you read it, have your critical thinking cap tightly fastened. It is a supportive book if you are pro-hormone replacement therapy.
