When Douglas MacArthur returned to the U.S. after being relieved of command in Korea in 1951, he was setting foot on American soil for the first time since 1935. During his long sojourn in the Pacific he had fought against America's enemies in concert with a wide array of often contentious European allies and emerging Asian forces. In MacArthur Gavin Long examined one of the most complex personalities, thrust into some of the most complex situations, to be found in the "Military Commanders" series. It is scarcely surprising that he sometimes gave his subject mixed reviews. Long was editor of the Australian Official History of World War II and offers an interesting account of MacArthur's relationship with his Australian allies. Examples of MacArthur's initiative and leadership ability in Mexico and World War I, ignored in some studies, are given due attention here. Of particular interest, due to rapid changes of government throughout the world in recent years, is Long's insightful account of MacArthur's administration of post-war Japan. MacArthur himself later recalled that "Japan had become the world's greatest laboratory for an experiment in the liberation of a people from totalitarian rule and for the liberalization of government from within ...."

I'd like to give this book an honest review, but I can't. The book is so horribly written that I couldn't make it through WWI. In the 40 pages I did read I discovered that MacArthur was considered good looking and that Gavin Long is an awful author. The accounts of WWI read like someone describing symbols moving around a map. A division is given an objective, the objective is accomplished and MacArthur gets a Silver Star. Oh and several thousand people died. There is no indication of what MacArthur did, why he did it, or how what he did do affected the overall situation. I'd really like to read this book through WWII and the occupation of Japan, but I can't punish myself like that. Also note that this book is a reprint and was first published in 1969.

Best book I have read on the subject.......2006-10-26

My six year old daughter has been dealing with trich for several months now, and I have read a ton of books and internet sites. Dr. Penzel's book is the most comprehensive and helpful. Despite having only one chapter relating specifically to children, it is an extremely helpful one and the rest of the book is very informative about the disorder in general as well. His suggestions for motivating younger children have been particularly valuable to us. His advice to and compassion for parents of children with trich has been a lifeline for me-whenever I feel hopeless or that I am losing patience I go back and re-read it and it helps me a lot. I can't say this book or anything else has gotten trich under control for us yet (as Dr. Penzel explains, treatment can be difficult with such a young child), but it has definitely given us hope and gone a long way in helping us to cope with the disorder ourselves and not make things worse for our child.

As far as adults go, I don't have trich so I can't really speak to how helpful it would be for adults who do, but I will say that this is the only book I have read that offers lots of actual specific, practical advice in every area from treatment options to medications to diets, supplements and alternative therapies in an non-biased, factually-based manner. It is certainly the only book I have read that lays out a detailed, specific self-treatment plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with this difficult disorder.

Informative, educational and covers all the avenues.......2006-09-03

This book was educational and informative, listing a variety of options and avenues for the possible treatment of Trichotillomania. As a trich patient, I only wish this research and information was available to my parents and myself 36 years ago when I began pulling. Never too late, however, as the behavior modification suggestions and possible medication treatments listed and explored have already started me on my road to controlling my urges and actions. A must read for anyone who may suffer from this disorder, or his or her parent.

This is a great book for those that suffer from Trich and for those that treat it or have a loved one with it. Dr. Penzel has a great knowledge of how suffers feel and I would highly recommend this book to everyone who has been touched by this disorder. Am looking forward to seeing what his next book is.

Fabulous book. Chapters on understanding the condition, the physiology of hair, and guides to finding a helpful therapist or to conducting behavioral modification theraphy yourself. We all know how hard this is, so seek any resources you can find -- this book being a great one.

Fantastic...

Comprehensive scientific overview.......1999-11-15

Jackson provides a well-written overview of viticulture and oenology, with academic rigour and a bias towards more recent research. This book was very useful in my studies through the Cape Wine Academy, and I expect it to continue being a useful reference. Make sure to pick up the second edition, it contains significantly more material than the first.

Especially valuable is the clear exposition of complex biological or biochemical processes, which allows excess detail to be ignored while still maintaining readability (rather more useful than trying to fill in the scientific gaps in consumer-oriented books). Meticulously referenced, and good value for the serious student of wine, even at the steep academic-textbook price.

I have made most of the clothes presented in Hinds "Sew the Contemporary Wardrobe" and been very pleased with the results. Her instructions are clear and complete and allow for personal variation. My granddaughters and neighbor girls have been happy with their gifts of doll clothes!

Because I liked "Contemporary" so much, I recently ordered (via Amazon)and received promptly 3 more Hinds books.

Joan Hinds provides an excellent choice of patterns with which to create indoor outdoor fashions for 18" dolls. The patterns are timeless. They can easily be modified to reflect most style periods from the mid 20th century forward.

I love the American Girl Dolls, but the clothes can be expensive--more than $20 per outfit! The outfits in this book look at least as nice as what you can find in the catalog, and with a little imagination I'm sure you could duplicate a lot of their outfits. All of the patterns are included in an envelope in the back, which is nice but I could never figure out how to fold the gigantic sheet so it fits back in there! I'm not a very experienced sewer, yet I was still able to make 3 really cute outfits from these patterns. As a bonus, there are crochet patterns for a hat and purse.
