Book Description
Benedetto Croce was the foremost Italian philosopher of the first half of the twentieth century and his influence extended to every aspect of intellectual life in Italy. He played a significant, sometimes crucial, role in Italian politics, and his writing commanded attention throughout Europe, America, and beyond. In the last few years his contribution to various disciplines has been undergoing a re-evaluation in Italy. This collection continues that reassessment with an English-speaking audience in mind.
The book is a collection of essays by scholars from various disciplines - philosophy, history, literature, and art history - covering the broad scope of Croce's life and work, from his early writings on local Neopolitan history in the 1890s to his activity as a public figure before and after the Second World War. In this much-needed addition to contemporary criticism one senses the depth and originality of his thought in the areas of history, national politics, rhetoric, and art. Including the first English-language discussion of Taccuini di lavoro, Croce's working diary, this is the first volume in English that provides a critical survey of Croce's major works and ideas, as well as fresh interpretations from a variety of contemporary points of view.

Good advice, tasty dishes.......2006-07-12
I've done the 30-Health Makeover several times, mostly because I miss something along the way, or forget things over time. I first started this program in 1999, lost about 60 lbs. (without much exercise as I was working about 75-90 hrs. a week and my skin, hair and nails became healthier. I've always had people at work asking me what I'm eating because it looks and smells delicious. I sometimes substitute less expensive fish and the program works fine. By the end of the month, you're pretty used to the food combining and it's not hard to come up with simple meals of your own that follow the rules. Also, many maintstream grocery stores now have organic foods and lots of soy and/or rice substitutes, so shopping is easier than it was when I first started the program.
The 30 day total health makeover by Marilu Henner.......2005-09-15
I checked out this book from the library and thought it was great. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the recipes call for some exotic ingredients. It's hard if you are on a budget. By the way I ordered this book from Amazon almost two months ago and still haven't recieved it. They never returned my money and they stopped responding to my emails. The book is good, but you might want to buy it somewhere else.
Feel the difference!.......2005-01-20
I wasn't expecting much when I started this eating plan, but was pleasantly surprised. I DID feel much better. However, the food combining theory can be a little confusing, and the book needed to be a little clearer on substitutions. The recipes are tasty, but although none of the recipes call for adding salt, there is a prominent use of Tamari/soy sauce which is in itself high in sodium. If you are watching sodium, you might want to use another type of seasoning. Some of the recipes for example called for Sea Bass and/or Red Snapper and Ahi Tuna (the Sushi grade kind). At my supermarket, the sea bass was $20.00 lb.,I can only imagine what the Ahi tuna costs! I just substituted plain old tuna, and either cod or tilapia for the sea bass. Also, the menus needed to be planned better to utilize your leftovers. For example, I baked the "Mary Ann's Corn Muffins" recipe, which made 12 muffins. We were supposed to have them for breakfast for that one day, and nowhere on the plan did they appear again! So the next day, there was another different breakfast, with no usage for the leftover muffins, and no information on what to do in these cases. Some of the recipes that did allow you to use leftovers the next day, happened to be the recipes that made very small portions to begin with, so there WERE no leftovers! UGHHH! Also, you need to have a restaurant size icebox for all the veggies and ingredients. I found myself going shopping more frequently, running all over town to different stores to get some of the ingredients. Luckily, I live in an area that it's easy to find the different ingredients. If you are a working person, you will need to cook things the day before you need them to have it all ready on some occasions. I had to make my hubby's lunch the night before for some of the days, otherwise I'd be up all night cooking. It seemed I was in the kitchen way too frequently though. I was a little disappointed to find out that Marilu has a nanny employed! :) I wonder if that's who cuts up all the veggies in her home and prepares all of these meals. Because some are a little time consuming. Don't get me wrong, I like Marilu, and although there's a few downsides to the book, it is still worth doing. Sometimes celebrities forget about what it's like to be the "average" person. See Bass is ok for celebs, but there are other types of fish that are cheaper and also healthy. But the diet can become a little pricey if you get every single ingredient on the shopping lists - but in the end, you'll feel better.
30 days of great menus and tips!.......2004-04-15
This book is awesome! I love that there are healthy and delicious menus every day, for thirty days - and there are also vegetarian and on-the-go options so you can switch out menus any time you like. And while you're following the menus, you can follow Marilu's wonderful tips on anything from organizing your home - to your life! Marilu has fun beauty secrets that she shares each day, motivational tips, and lots of great exercise information. She even helps us "fake it 'til we make it." There's a great online support website at Marilu.com, and I found this to be most helpful in finding others who wanted a healthier lifestyle. There are online support classes every month, as well. Thanks Marilu for a great book that truly changed my life!
Marilu helps you everyday with EVERYTHING!.......2004-04-13
This book is amazing- She gives you a menu for everyday- a beauty tip, an organizing tip and so much more. She is personable, funny and she really cares about the health of her readers. In addition her online community is a great assest to The Total Health Makeover program. This is a Way of Life- and it's changed my life! Thank you Marilu!

Customer Reviews:
Met all my needs and more!.......2006-09-21
I didn't expect much from this book -- so it was even more enjoyable to realize that the book not only was full of recipes geared for my electric grill BUT included nutritional information for most of the elements I have to watch -- sugar content, carbs, protein, calories, fat. I heartily recommend this for people who are trying to eat healthy but find most cookbooks geared only to carbs or only to fat or only to calories, etc, who have electric grills (like the George Foreman) or who are looking for an economical cookbook.
Not what I hoped it would be.......2005-12-17
I love my new Cuisinart Griddler but, frankly, the instructions that came with it were pretty skimpy. So I went looking for a good cookbook that would explain how best to prepare fresh, healthy, delicious dishes using this marvelous appliance. `Hot Off the Grill' looked like just the thing: the focus appeared to be on HEALTHY eating, it had full nutritional info for each recipe, and the few pages I saw in the online preview (mostly for grilled veggies) looked interesting, with useful tips for cooking techniques.
Sadly, it proved not to be what I need or want. Here's why...
TOO MANY PROCESSED FOODS: Nearly every recipe calls for prepackaged and processed ingredients rather than for the fresh (and tastier) originals, with dishes such as pizza burgers made with catsup, "Italian" chicken made with fat-free Italian dressing, plus too many other recipes using onion flakes, dried parsley or basil, canned mushrooms, Bacon Bits, etc.).
TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON BRAND NAME: The book reads like it was produced by the marketing department for Kraft/General Foods. Lund's list of preferred ingredients/brands in her introduction is more than enough to give the novice cook an idea of what to buy. Those endless references to Kraft or Oscar Mayer in so many of the recipes are pointless unless there's a commercial tie-in. Is there?
TOO MANY "HAPPY HOMEMAKER" RECIPES: A majority of the recipes look like they came from the back of a box of something or from a 1960s ladies magazine...with cutesy names and ersatz flavors: Grande Fish Fillets (fish in a mix of Catalina dressing, chili powder, dried parsley, and Ritz cracker crumbs) and Caribbean Ham Salad Sandwiches (processed ham, raisins, coconut, carrots, mayonnaise and cheddar cheese), Even those recipes that include fresh ingredients among the processed foods (and yes, there are many that do) seem bland and unimaginative to someone (me) who loves cookbooks by Rosso and Lukins and reads Cooking Light magazine cover to cover.
Pretty good, not great.......2005-09-21
There is not as much variety in the recipes in this book as I would have hoped. The ones that are there are, however, very good.
HAUGHT!!.......2005-08-20
There exist no words to accurately describe the decadence of this low-calorie, common-folk, butter-flavoured-aerosol-grease-sprayed haute-cuisine. Do yourself and your loved ones a favour... memorize this entire book and never, NEVER stray from its pages of wisdom. If God himself were to write an instruction manual to life, this book would be plagiarised. If you do not understand English, learn it immediately so you too can find sanctuary between the covers of this masterpiece. Ms. JoAnna M. Lund is a most remarkable visionary; her voluptuous use of Kraft singles is surpassed only by the wanton references to cultural insensitivity in her recipe titles. The only problem with this magna carta of the culinary world is that it does not come in a miniature form with which I could travel the world, feeling comforted in its oasis of sheer, unadulterated brilliance.
A "comfort food" cookbook for the George Foreman Grill.......2005-06-19
We bought my mother a George Foreman grill for Mother's Day, and she wanted a cookbook too, but Mom's cooking style is best described as "All American comfort food". The available cookbooks by Mr. Foreman and others had too many recipes for Moroccan or Cajun or Tex-Mex meals using condiments that aren't in her pantry. Hot Off The Grill came up when I did a search on "George Foreman Grills" and when I read the names of some of the recipes, I knew that this was the book Mom was looking for! So far she has made some of the burgers and grilled vegetables and they taste great, and she is very happy with the grill and this cookbook. And I am going to buy a copy for myself too ....

Customer Reviews:
Great book, but 2nd ed. and not the 3rd!.......2007-10-05
This is probably the best reef creature ID book out there for Florida, the Carribean and the Bahamas, but buy the third edition instead. Semi-hard cover.
Awesome guide!.......2007-07-19
I bought this item for my trip to the Caribbean. I'm a marine biologist by training, and I loved this book because it gave information above and beyond just identification. It also tells you how likely it was that the critter you saw was the one pictured in the book. Then there are lists of all the species in the back, with space for you to record when and where you saw it. I had so much fun combing this book after snorkeling to identify all the organisms I had seen! What a great investment! I also like this book because it arranges species by their scientific classification. It could have been a bit more thorough, though--i saw plenty of organisms that aren't mentioned in this book at all.
interesting and educational.......2007-05-23
i think its a really good book because it tells you almost every thing you can see in the ocean. I really like it.
Thankful diver.......2007-05-09
This book is a great resource for anyone interested in marine invertebrates from Florida, Caribbean and the Bahamas. It is a especially useful reference for divers because of the great underwater photography depicting the animals as one would while diving. This guide also has information on the taxonomy, popular and scientific names, size and depth, as well as visual id tips, abundance and distribution, habitat and behavior, reaction to divers, and additional information of interest. In some cases, there is information on effect on divers if the species is known to cause a negative effect or potentially dangerous. More than 50 researchers contributed to make the book as accurate as possible. I am a marine biologist, I am very happy with my purchase and highly recommend it.
A Great Underwater Identification Guide for the Curious!.......2005-09-30
I highly recommend this guide, as well as the whole "Reef Series" by Humann & Deloach, for Divers, Snorkelers and anyone who is curious about living things beneath the sea! H & D are highly respected for their ongoing work, identifying, cataloging and photographing underwater critters that many of us may never see! Reef Creatures, along with its companion books in the series are top notch. The authors are comprehensive in their scope, intelligent in their presentation -- they provide us with generous amounts of information to identify and learn about the various creatures, without turning their book into a scientic tome -- AND the photographs are gorgeous!
As a diver, I find the whole collection invaluable, and I usually take this particular book with me on dive trips. I also take along its condensed, waterproof companion in my B.C. pocket, and can make instant identifications underwater! If you are interested in the creatures of the sea, don't hesitate about this book. Humann & Deloach are the leaders in this field, and their books are the best you will ever find for visual identification purposes!

Customer Reviews:
great reference book.......2007-01-09
For scuba divers, these volumns are unparalleled. There is so much to see under the sea and so many corals look very similar. Paul does an excellent job of helping you differentiate among species. Of course you have to use your memory or your camera to compare it to the guide book after the dive, cause the book does not tolerate depth very well. ;) Highly recommended book!
Extremely essential!.......2004-07-12
A field guide to coral, especially by Paul Humann, is essential to your collection of ocean field guides. Hundreds of coral species are listed, including: sea fans, hard corals, soft corals, and mushroom corals. The book also explains the many diseases that possibly afflict many species. The coral entries have excellent, detailed explanations beside them, concerning species depth, range, and abundance. The photograph transfers are above average, showing enough of the coral for identification purposes. The photographs are of course very beautiful, containing various, colorful hues of these animals. Buy the waterproof, annotated version of Reef Coral ID to bring along in the ocean on a scuba diving trip. The book has been updated twice since it was published, with the original print still floating around here on Amazon.com. The second edition is far superior, containing many more listings and more beautiful photos. Completely essential field guide for a private collection.
The Best Guide Available.......2002-04-22
This Reef Coral Identification book is THE definitive guide. In brief there is not a better guide out there. It thoroughly covers each type of coral and gives identification information as well as full color photographs. In addition to all the corals it covers other plant life likely to be encountered while snorkeling or diving. These include grasses, weeds, algae and coral diseases. With a plastic cover and the pages treated to resist water it can be taken to the beach or onto the boat without much concern about the water damaging the book. For each item the book also discusses any danger to divers that the particular coral may represent (such as fire coral).
This book can also be purchased as part of a three part set that also includes the Reef Fish Identification and Reef Creature Identification texts, each of which is equally as excellent as the Reef Coral Identification book.
The Coral Reef Bible.......2002-01-11
Don't take my word for it, go to a handful of dive shops and this author's name will come up more than once. An excellent book, I haven't come across anything I like better. The others in this family are just as good.
WIthout a doubt, the BEST identification book out there........2001-12-06
This is a fantastic book, and along with the other two books by this author you should be able to ID any marine creature you encounter!
The book lists virtually all types of corals including Algae, black corals, brain, lace, cactus, cup, boulder, fire, fleshy, etc.
Each entry has an excellent picture, the name, family, size, depth, and other information.
The pictures alone are worth the cost of the book!
This is definetely the book you want to have with you when you dive or snorkel. Buy it today, you won't be disappointed!

Identifying things underwater in the Caribbean........2007-08-26
I am a Brit who has been travelling to the Caribbean to dive with a Rotary group on an annual basis for the past 5 years during which we have dived in the North, East, West and Southern areas. One of my diving colleagues brought along the Reef Set and having looked at it, I was so impressed that I decided to buy a Set for myself - a great reference work for someone who is keen to put names to the things they see underwater.
Wonderful.......2007-08-15
I was working as a scuba instructor down in Grand Cayman when the first edition came out. I can't tell you what an impact the reef fish identification guide had. I have the whole set and it's wonderful.
The best in print.......2007-08-11
If you dive, this is the guide you must have to identify what you see. Indespensible for any trip.
The Best Guides in the Ocean.......2007-05-21
This set makes identifying fish, creatures, and corals possible for anyone. The authors developed a revolutionary grouping system to help the user focus observations, from which one can then refer to the book to make a positive identification. The photos are fabulous, and in the Reef Fish book, the authors even tell you where they were taken. Information is geared to those who spend time underwater (both the "Reef Fish" and "Reef Creature" books tell readers how organisms react to divers). Although one can use these books by thumbing through the pictures alone, there is much valuable information in the concise writing leading up to the photos, especially the authors' notes and explanations of the identification groups. Descriptions accompanying the photos help one learn subtle differences and sharpen observations further. In all, these three books are "must haves" for those who want to know what they're looking at under the ocean.
Great Set of Books!.......2007-03-22
The handy carrying case and lovely volumes will come in handy for our next Virgin Island adventure...sorry we didn't have them along last time for identification purposes! They are terrific! Thanks.
Book Description
Students, teachers, fine arts professionals, crafts aficionados, art historians, restorers, and bibliophiles: the list of people who will appreciate the beauty of this extraordinary summary of bookbinding techniques is endless. Written by a professor of bookbinding at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis in Barcelona, it provides a precise, systematic, and fully illustrated approach to the craft. Everything is covered in marvelous detail: tools and materials, the parts of the book and the binding, and protective features. Handsome ideas for decorating the cover (stamping, gilding, engraving) abound, as do suggestions for restoration. Eight specific and extremely detailed projects for binding form the heart of the volume, which includes binding in fabric, making a jacket with flaps for graphic works, and constructing a leather-trimmed slipcase.
Customer Reviews:
Truth In Advertising.......2007-01-25
As promised, this book covers bookbinding with a plethora of materials and it is written so that almost anyone can pick up this art, even without past expertise or pre-existing knowledge. A good book.
Complete? It would be better if it was called "Advanced".......2006-04-04
When I saw the title "Complete Book of bookbinding", I was hoping a huge book, with every detail about this craftwork. When the package arrived here at my house, I got surprised, not to say disapointed: it's a 160 pages book, trying to embrace EVERY aspect of bookbinding: history, materials, a few binding tecniques, restoration tips and how-to make boxes.
Of course, this great amount of subjects written on few pages is boarded on a superficial form. The history chapter is very short, and the contemporary paragraph is questionable, once that only Josep Cambra's style is pointed as an example.
"Tools and materials" and "Chemises and boxes" are the best part of this title, occupying the major part of the pages.
Some explanations are simply skipped. I felt difficult to reproduce the "One-piece drop-spine box" covered with fabric, once that little details weren't written, and the images weren't big enough to solve my problem.
I'm not going to lie: it's a good book for advanced bookbinders. But the author fails while trying to write about EVERY aspect of the craft. And the title is too strong for the few binding tecniques shown here.
Advanced Bookbinding Techniques.......2005-01-31
Many of the books currently available on bookbinding only offer a glimpse into the possibilities of fine binding -- this volume, recently published from a Spanish edition, not only offers traditional bookbinding techniques, in full and partial leather, vellum, and cloth, but also offers detailed guidelines for more de luxe treatments, such as leather and fabric doublures and edge decorations. If you are an advanced or advancing bookbinder, the images and techniques discussed in this volume will add greatly to your repertoire of skills.

A wonderful viewpoint of British country gardening.......2003-09-08
"The Englishman's Garden" edited by Alvilde Lees-Milne and Rosemary Verey is a wonderful pictoral and viewpoint of British country gardening. This book includes thirty-three short but informative essays from Englishmen who pride themselves on gardening and who offer sound advice on how to choreograph landscape. The text also includes nearly two hundred stunning color and black & white photographs of some of Englands finest country gardens.
Controlled symmetry, wild gravel gardens, dramatic sculpture and daring borders are all discussed within the pages of this impressive text. Moreover, the editors include detailed plans and month by month maintenance of majestic gardens from tier one gardeners. I especially enjoyed the variety of shapes and the evergreen contrasts of color and texture in Sir Frederick Ashton's Garden at Chandos Lodge, Eye, Suffolk. Sir Frederick is a master gardener who was born in Ecuador and lived in Peru. He moved to Chandos Lodge in 1958 and within twenty-five years he skillfully created one of the finest gardens in the world.
Another fine garden and essay included that of Sir Bernard Lovell at The Quinta, Swettenham, Cheshire. He created a garden in which paths wind through the trees and shrubs with the flowers of spring in the undercover. In the summer, brilliant roses and lovely clematis smother the house and walls inside the garden. Overall this is a very good book about gardens with many centuries of evolution. An added bonus of "The Englishman's Garden," is that it can also double as a good coffee table book in addition to a practical guide to landscaping for intermediate & expert gardeners.

Think About What You're Buying..........2006-10-19
I for one, LOVED this book & the enclosed DVD. Both were thoughtfully and artfully arranged, but it seems after reading other reviews people were looking for something different. This is not a catalogue of wendy's on the market products. If that's what you want, visit her website. This is not a book about someone else's kids. Personally, I was extremely interested in seeing how a married mother of four successfully and creatively manages her life; it gives a glimpse of that. The title is COMPLETELY acurate. It's called, Nesting, people. She gives suggestions for layouts of the nursery with photographic examples. If you didn't want something from her point of view, why buy the book?
Murals done by Pennys from Heaven.......2005-07-24
As an artist myself I was interested in finding out about the murals. After NOT receiving any info back from the Wendy Bellissimo phone/email I did some research myself. A woman named Penny did the murals!!! NOT ENOUGH CREDIT WAS GIVEN TO THE MURALIST. (Other than maybe a mention in the beginning.) In any case I passed the info to my girlfriends before they bought the book. The Wendy Bellissimo line on it's own is nice...but the murals are what put it all together! Bravo to Penny! Great ideas from Wendy on placement of furniture and bedding materials. Certainly a book that you can get inspired from but disappointed that the muralist didn't get the credit she deserved....that was where I found most of my inspiration from.
love this book.......2005-02-05
I just received this book from my friend as a congratulations (we just became pregnant with our first) and absolutely love it. I can't stop flipping through it, its so beautiful. I can't wait to start "nesting" myself and was excited to learn that Wendy Bellissimo has her products in Babies R Us. You can bet I'm going to be registering there. I highly recommend this book for first time parents.
Not worth it.......2005-01-18
The bedding in this book is no longer available and never will be again. Wendy has pulled all of her stuff out of retail stores and now only sells less quality mechandise to Babies R Us. Since this book was made in 2003 and they pulled the merchandise in 2004, I can only guess that they knew what they were doing. How sad that they treat their customers this way.
I'm in love with this book!!!.......2004-09-14
I'm not one to buy design oriented or "Coffee Table" books but my girlfriend gave Nesting to me as a shower gift and I've now flipped through it innumerable times. On bed rest for the balance of my pregnancy I've been fighting to stay positive. This book always helps to bring my spirits up and has been an invaluable tool in guiding my husband on what to buy! Wendy Bellissimo is an inspiration and I thank her for creating a book where there was truly a need. No other baby design book compares! No question you will love it too!
