Best Fastpitch Pitching Resource Available.......2006-04-25

This is by far the best resource for learning the mechanics of windmill pitching. It's great for beginners and advanced pitchers.

Good for an established pitcher.......2004-10-30

Cheri Kempf has written a fine book for the established female pitcher. She also makes a few attempts to relate her wisdom to the coaching of the beginner, but that is where I find this book most lacking. My daughter just began pitching this year, and I'm really searching for something that gives instruction from day one. Kempf gives numerous drills that are wonderful for correcting mistakes in the established pitcher's form, but I just felt that it lacked the beginning steps that I was looking for.

While the book did correct a number of things that my daughter had been taught--like worrying about "opening the gate and closing the gate" with the hips, which Kempf says is worthless and can lead to knee injuries--I wanted more for the beginner. However, if you, your daughter or a girl you coach IS an established pitcher who is looking to correct bad habits, learn new pitches, learn how to mentally prepare for games and the like, I doubt there is a better book out there. It just didn't fill all of my needs.

One thing in an earlier review that I must comment on: why on Earth would someone criticize this book because there is a picture of Amanda Freed on the cover? There are also pictures of Michelle Smith and Lisa Fernandez within the book which are put there to give the reader an idea of correct form. Do I know what Kempf's connection is to any of these women? No, but I do know that those photos could not have been used without permission from each woman. The women concerned obviously don't have a problem with their likenesses being used in the book, so how could anyone else complain about it?

Excellent mechanics for the fastpitch student.......2003-12-07

Without a doubt, the finest book I have ever read dealing with the accurate approach for the fastpitch female pitcher. By follwing the detailed analysis that Cheri brings from her many years of experience, one can see the kinetic breakdown of the pitching motion in step by step form. I have picked up many ideas and pointers to use with my daughter, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about the proper mechanics of fastpitch softball pitching.

I've been coaching my son in his pitching for the last four years now, and this is definitely the best book on technique and skill development I've ever encountered. It really breaks down the sequence of motion, gives pertinent and effective drills to use and deals with both the physical and mental aspects of pitching. Tom House really knows his stuff!

An Astonishing Book.......2006-05-18

If you're just starting to pitch or have been pitching for years this book is defiantly for you. This book defiantly answered some of the questions that I had about pitching. My arm had been hurting early in the season for about the past three years. As I was reading I came upon a section that told you how to take care of your arm but, it also told you how to make it stronger in the off season. If you're having trouble getting guys out on a 0-2 pitch they give new pitches to try.
The person that wrote this book, Tom House, is defiantly in front of his time when it comes to pitching. He was a major league pitching coach for a number of years, so you know that it's going to be valuable things that you're learning. One of the best things that I liked about this book is that it had major leaguers telling their experiences with the book and that it actually helped their pitching game.
In this book it doesn't just tell you how to keep your arm in shape or throwing new pitches. It also teaches you how to make your arm stronger so you can get more velocity on your fastball. It gives you about 25 different lifts with dumb bells that work your rotator cuff. It also gives you stretches that can make your arm much more limber so you can get more velocity on your ball.
I really like this book and I think that it's is perfect for all pitching ages. I liked it because it gave major league advice. It was a book written by a very respectable pitching coach that defiantly knows his stuff. You know that when you pick up this book you are going to get very valuable information. I know that if I ever have a question about pitching then I know where to look.

Pitching explained in detail.......2004-07-07

The Pitching Edge was written by the former pitching coach of the Texas Rangers. He was innovative and sometimes controversial. This tome is comprehensive, covering the physical, training and mental aspect of being a quality pitcher. The book is not necessarily aimed at youth, but I have used the to help my under 10 year old player learn the basics.

I found that some of the language in the book to be loosely used and obtuse. Therefore I doubt that a young reader would get everything the book has to offer. However, especially when used in conjunction with the companion video, this book is a great springboard for the young pitcher when guided by an adult. (See my review of the video for more detail)

One qualifier is required. House does not agree that young pitchers should be restricted from throwing breaking pitches. That was against convention when the book was released 10 years ago and convention has not changed. For further reference you could check the USABaseball web site for a great positon paper. Simply add (slash)med_position_statement(dot)html to the root url to see the page. These athletes are at beginning of their pro careers and this statement is about how to get them to this state.
I give my ranking about all the other items in the book exclusive of the breaking pitch advice for youth pitchers. I have not allowed my young pitcher to start throwing those types of pitches for fear of arm injury.

Good for older readers.......2002-04-10

I wish this book was around when I was pitching in high school and college. It would have helped me in countless ways (better fundamentals, skill work, and specific exercises for pitchers). Now I'm 44 and pitching in an over 40 league!

If you are in high school or older I highly recommend this book. Dad, it would be good for you to read and then use it to teach a younger baseball player. If you are a high school or college coach, you OWE it to your kids to read this and help them.

The Pitching Edge by Tom House.......2002-03-16

House did not write this book for Little League coaches who want to help their kids. It is loaded with hyper-technical jargon that House does not explain and won't make sense to experienced players and coaches. For example, in a section on how to pitch off a mound, House states, "A pitcher must find and keep an upper body spine-to-hip relationship with a constant angle of flex in posting knee at front leg lift, stride and landing -- directing upper body into torso rotation and launch of a baseball." What? His science may be correct, but you won't benefit from this book because House does not translate the science into common sense terms that ballplayers will understand.

Suzanne's recipes are always innovative and well thought-out. I never have any trouble concocting one of her recipes. Just to point out to the editorial reviewer--the "Level One" or "Level Two" is not a difficulty measurement. It is for the people who are following Suzanne's way of eating, where a food item is considered Level One or Level Two. I really hate it when people write reviews who don't do their research first.

Things you want to know about breeding.............2005-01-02

The PROPER CARE OF BUDGIES is a thick (250+pp), hardcover book that covers all the basics of pet care and a good deal about breeding parakeets or Budgerigars. In a section on cages and aviaries, Author Dennis Kelsey Wood has included many designs for outdoor aviaries and nest boxes, as well as commercial cages. He covers breeding considerations and genetics in another section. This is not the best book to give your child for reading about his new pet Budgie, although it does include numerous photographs of featherless baby chicks that may be of interest to the curious child.

Most of the photographs are interesting and most of the text reflects good common sense. For example, how many folks need to be told to "make sure your cage is large enough to accommodate your Budgies favorite toys"? On the other hand, most of us will never "show" our Budgies at an exhibition either. Two short chapters in the back of the book "The Pet Budgerigar" and "Maintaining Health" cover what most of us want to know. If your keeping Budgies as pets, you will do better to buy The Owner's Guide to THE BUDGIE, by Julie Rach.

Oh well, you get what you pay for. .......2007-05-07

I love the old fashion design of these greeting cards, so purchased them at an amazingly low price. When they arrived, I discovered that they were flimsy and of poor card stock. They're not nearly as nice as the photo appears. I never sent them out for Easter, instead, I used them as bookmarks in books I'm reading or cookbooks, etc.

The book reveals the enormous power that Belluschi wielded as an arbiter of taste and a decision-maker in the 1950s and 1960s; his role in shaping the policy of the State Department in its overseas building program; and his role in securing major commissions for favored architects such as I. M. Pei. The book also discusses Belluschi's role in the development of regionalism in the Pacific Northwest and its impact on the definition of modernism as it was emerging in the United States.

The search for the `the real Saint Patrick' has puzzled and intrigued scholars for centuries. How much can we really know about the life and times of Patrick? Why and how was the Patrick myth built up in the seventh century, and what was its influence on the development of Irish Catholicism? This new study takes a new approach to these questions. It begins by looking at what we expect from history; and the very different expectations of those who made Patrick famous, gave value to his writings so that they were preserved, and produced the interest that is still with us. Only when we can distinguish between the problems and perspectives of the hagiographer, on the one hand, and the historian, on the other, can we begin to approach Patrick.

This is superb popular history, rooted in a lifetime of research and study of the original sources, that undermines many of our preconceptions about Patrick and reveals several surprises. It includes new translations of the life of Patrick and Patrick's own writings, as well as an extensive bibliography and resources for further reading.

Part One is a narrative outlining the problems of coming to know Patrick and to outline the earliest evidence for Christianity in Ireland. Part Two is made up of fresh translations of the basic sources for Patrick and his cult.

The perfect place to start if you want to learn about St. Patrick or early Irish Christianity. O'Loughlin is the best scholar in the world on this subject, but his books are easy to read.

This is a very lovely presentation of the life of St. Patrick. I used it for a vacation bible school group of 2nd and 3rd graders. They easily understood the story and really loved the pictures.

I have always enjoyed the picture books of Tomie dePaola. His unique illustration style is immediately recognizable and is reminiscent of religious icons found in Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Not surprisingly, dePaola often tackles Christian themes, making them accessible for younger readers and their parents. Among my all-time favorite children's book is his "The Clown of God," which I have enjoyed reading to children prior to Christmas.

"Patrick: Patron Saint of Ireland" is another such book. The simple narrative mainly addresses Patrick's early years as a British boy, captured by the Irish to become a slave shepherd in Ireland. After many years alone in prayer, he escapes, but eventually is called in a dream to return to Ireland to spread the love of God. After religious studies, becoming a missionary and then a bishop, he finally returns to Ireland, setting up churches, but not without opposition from some of the local rulers.

What I appreciate about this version of St. Patrick's story is the dependency on historical fact in the main narrative. The book concludes with six one-page summaries of the better-known legends of Ireland's patron saint, such as driving out the snakes, and his use of the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. Refreshingly, these legends are briefly, but affectionately, told without judgment. It is left to the reader (or the parent) to decide what to make of them.

The author concludes with a one-page epilogue, lovingly explaining how he was introduced as a young child to St. Patrick by his Irish Catholic grandparents.

This book is fine if you are Catholic, but I was hoping for something more accessible for non-Catholics. For example, the legend of the shamrock is not very meaningful if you are not already acquainted with the trinity or Jesus or the Holy Spirit, etc. This would definitely not be a book to use to teach anything about the Catholic faith to non-Catholic, non-Christian children, which is what I was hoping to use it for.

I like how dePaola has a section at the end for the legends of St. Patrick, separating these from the biography. I was raised an Irish Catholic and I was hoping to be able to share some of that heritage with my own children through this book, but in the end, all of the miracles and mumbo jumbo are too hard to swallow. My daughter was confused about which parts of the story were "real" and which were "for pretend." I think it was a little too much for her to choke down. I had to try to explain to her what baptism is, but she just stared at me blankly.

The illustrations are quite lovely, and I would recommend this book highly for all Catholic school libraries.

Informative & Fun!.......2003-01-13

Growing up in an Irish Catholic family myself, I had heard a great deal about St. Patrick. When we received this book as a gift I started reading it to my children, and they loved it. There were stories even I hadn't heard about St. Pat! As with his St. Francis book, Tomie DePaola's book holds children's interest throughout the many stories while other books of this length lose children. Kids remember the stories and repeat them because they are told so lovingly and in such a fun way! I now bring this book to their school and read it to all their classrooms every St. Patrick's Day to let children know that there is more to Patrick than green beer!

A wonderful book by Tomie dePaola filled with helpful information about the true story of St. Patrick's life, as well as fun legends attributed to the patron Saint of Ireland. dePaola's bold illustrations lend to the attraction of the book. He mentions at the end of the book his reasons for writing it and his attraction to Saint Patrick. My own eight year old son has a strong devotion to Saint Patrick and this book is among his favorites. I appreciate the clear differentiation between fact and legend in this book and would highly recommend it for any family.
